Kylie Jenner cosmetics are all cruelty-Free and almost all of them are vegan, which surprised me! Becca is another brand that surprises a few people because they don't advertise their CF stance.
I buy CF products only, but it kind of bothers me when a company is CF and doesn't say so on the packaging. Why not? Be proud of that. I think it helps the brand.
absolutely loved your disclaimer at the beginning about how no one is perfect, especially CF people, vegans, or vegetarians. i have been vegan for about 6 or 7 years now and i am STILL learning to this day which products are vegan and cruelty free. even some foods i get confused about. it is a constant learning curve and i really appreciate when those who are CF/vegan/vegetarian make it a point to say they are not perfect and that they are still learning too!! it puts such a bad light on the community when people act like they're better than others because they don't eat meat or use CF products. i just thought it was really nice you mentioned that and i am so impressed by the acceptance and respect in the comments as well!!!
There is always some person who suffers from cognitive dissonance whose first response to a vegan is "DO U THINK YOU'RE PERFECT? !" It's just guilt. It has nothing to do with perfection. It has to do with ethics, compassion and responsibility. But they like to focus on other things because they aren't doing anything to help animals, they're too busy having them tortured and eating them, so vegans get the attacks because they don't want to take a hard look at themselves. I'm really so tired of their attitude about it. Our burden is hard enough without that pretense we always have to deal with.
It amazes me there are 193 countries in the world..192 that do not test on animals. You have the lone country of China that does. But Hong Kong, a city with over 7 million people, does not allow animal testing. Yet companies are still so greedy they have to sell to mainland China.
This is not quite correct. Yes, China is the only country that REQUIRES animal testing, but lots of other countries DO TEST on animals still (eg. US, one of the biggest practitioners of animal testing). In the EU and a handful of other places, it is banned, however the restriction is not monitored. A brand might not sell in China but might still test their products on animals elsewhere. So don’t confuse requiring to test with practicing animal testing, just a heads up! :)
Inka Snellman..yes..I'm well aware of that. That is why I only use items that do not test on animals anywhere. I look for the leaping bunny or the cruelty free sign.
Susan Burris Lush, a company that takes Cruelty Free really seriously, told me the other day they dont sell sunscreen in their US stores, because the US requires Animal Testing for all Sunscreen. Also anytime a new ingrediant is brought to the Market, it has to be tested. So....America Too. So lame! 😑
I've been buying only CF makeup for 3 years. It was a huge learning curve for me. It bothered me NARS, and BY Terry were no longer CF. I found this helpful. I was so surprised Fresh and Clarins were not CF. Love it when a brand becomes CF!! Many blessings..MaryEllen
MaryEllen After 60 Sadly most of the most expensive US brands (like Tom Ford, La Mer) and almost all French luxury brands are not cruelty free :/ I was very disappointed with Nars & By Terry also! So glad to hear, that you are buying only cruelty free goodies 😘 I’m surprised, how many beauty gurus, and esp. more mature (and wiser ;) vloggers still don’t think these things at all/only think how much money they can do with sponsored vids..
Fruzsi B Essence is not leaping bunny approved. Dosn't matter what they claim, where is the proof? :-/

@@oanaandreea8474 brands have to pay if they want to put the leaping bunny logo in their products, is for that reason that a lot of brands don't have the logo. In Europe for example, is completely illegal test on animals, and it's not necessary the logo in the products.
María Zanahoria i agree and disagree with you. On the one hand, you are right, not having the leaping Bunny (or not being approved by PETA) it doesn't mean they test, because you have to pay for getting them. On the other hand, although in the EU it's forbidden to test on animals, there are brands that don't test their products on the EU but does it on China. For instance, Sephora or L'ORÉAL.
Fresh is the one brand I was soooo bummed about. They used to be cruelty free, but they started selling to China. I used to love their products, but I will no longer be purchasing from them. Please bring back cruelty free status Fresh!
Hi Annisa! I think I can clear this up for you. Brands that sell in China that are not from China are all required to submit each product to before and after testing in order to sell in the Chinese market. This is actually standard safety procedure and has been for some time after some products sold in China cause major health problems. If I recall the most famous case involved contaminated baby formula and effected over 10k children. For cosmetics domestic brands do not necessarily have to animal test, but the Chinese gov. considers it the most reliable and inexpensive form of testing, even though that is no longer true with new technology making animal testing for beauty products obsolete. Hope that clears things up for you! Chinese law can be really confusing.
Some guy working in ulta tried to argue with me that they are cruetly free even though I told him they aren't since they sell in China when he pressed me as to why I didn't want to buy the mac product he was trying to push on me instead of the urban decay product I was already purchasing.
I hate when brands say they "hate animal testing" and yet still sell in places like Chine that requires animals testing. If they really cared they would take the hits to their profit, don't bull crap me. 😒
A good rule of thumb is that if the company sells to China, they test on animals. They may try fancy wording like, "We don't test on animals unless it's absolutely necessary..." which means they test on animals because they sell to China and it's the law. Also, you might be interested to know that "bunnies" are not the only animals that suffer. Some animal testing is conducted on dogs. Beagles, in particular, because they are "trusting." (How disgusting is that?) I don't judge anyone else's choices, but when I learned about the dog thing years ago, it really pushed me over the edge and I went fully CF. I started with makeup and then moved on to products like shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, cleaning products, etc. It's a lot of work to keep track of, and sometimes it means giving up something I really like or that works well, but at the end of the day, I'm proud of myself. And when I look at my dog (who is half Beagle), I remember why I do it. I can't imagine any conducting these horrible tests on her. I also went pescatarian at the beginning of this year. Again, I don't judge anyone else's choices when it comes to stuff like that, but I feel great about myself and I've lost 40 lbs, so that was a total bonus. I think Kelly makes a great point. Do what you're comfortable with and what you can. Every little bit is a step in the right direction. And, no, I certainly don't think CF TH-camrs are pushing it down everyone's throats. I'm more bothered by the MAC obsession. It's totally overrated anyway. I hate watching tutorials and thinking, "Wow. Every single product they used is from a brand that tests on animals. Not one exception." It's sad. :(
I’m so glad you don’t push this too much, I really appreciate. When I was going cruelty free I hadn’t yet gotten a cruelty free foundation (both because of issues finding and paying for one) and when I told someone this, they started complaining so much about how by using it I was ‘just as bad as those who do the testing’. I didn’t want to waste the rest and had already payed for it and done the damage, yet was shamed for this because I wasn’t in a position to get more
2:23 that's a marketing technique called greenwashing, meaning you sell an image (for example using green colours) trying to attract a certain market demographic. Here in Europe the selling of cosmetics tested on animals has been forbidden for a few years now but if the products are sold in-stores un China then they aren't CF.
I've noticed how many food brands do this in Sweden - they have green logo, packaging or something like that, and it makes you assume they are organic/bio, but turns out it's only greenwashing :/
vmelkic exactly! Another tactic they use is printing symbols with claims that are pretty vague but stand for how good they are for the environment and putting them on the packaging of said product, loopholes in legislation allow them to do that. Seriously, in Sweden? That's awful, especially considering the environmental image you have!
Olivia Alves Yes, for a long time I thought that European brands are safe (I'm from Poland and we have a lot of makeup and skincare brands). It was so sad when I found out from the blogs on the Internet that quite a few Polish brands which I loved and purchased from are not CF. It's either because they sell/want start selling in China or their ingredients are from uncertain source. 😕
I have found so many cute vegan and cruelty free nail polish brands: Floss Gloss, I-Scream Nails, Zapora, F.U.N Lacquer, Color Club, Law Essentials, Zoya, Platte Polish, Superchic Lacquer, Bella Lacquer and more! Google them they are so cute! I am a sucker for pretty packaged and color nail polish. 😍
I just purged some brands I thought were cruelty free - Origins, Huda Beauty, and Boscia . I was so convinced Boscia was cruelty free and unfortunately they aren't! So sad about Nars too.
Rue Roxanne I have a lot of Pat McGrath products, and her stans would probably kill me for saying this, but I don't think most of them are worth the price tag. 🤷🏻♀️ Especially her older products that are in the super cheap plastic packaging. Her newer six pan eyeshadow palettes are nice, but I don't think that they're worth $55. I just got one of her new glosses in the mail Saturday and haven't tried it on yet, but I don't like the scent and it has a lot more glitter than I was anticipating. I don't like how a lot of people act like she's above criticism. Her products are not made from unicorn tears and they won't cure cancer. Sorry for the little rant. You're not missing out on much!
MidwestMakeupJunkie Thanks for the reviews! I was a little upset that she wasn’t cruelty free and I couldn’t pick anything up but it seems I’m not missing out on much. More money to spend on other things ;)
Just found your channel and absolutely love that you’re a cruelty free beauty TH-camr, those are hard to find❤️My whole makeup collection is cruelty free at this point (except one NARS Blush) and I’m working to make my hair and nail products cruelty free as well!
You have honestly inspired me to try to go CF. I have always loved animals but have never thought about the CF status of products. I'm still trying to find alternatives of some products I love but I feel so much better about myself when I can swap a product out with a CF product. Thank you for being my inspiration!
so glad you made this video!! i feel like a lot of people just assume certain brands are CF without checking. and it doesn't help that many brands promote themselves as being CF when they're actually not.
I had NO idea Lipstick Queen isn’t cruelty free.. I actually purchased one of their lipsticks and love it. Bummer! I always feel a bit guilty when I find out when I accidentally purchase animal tested makeup.
Not sure if it’s like this for everybody but I sometimes confuse benefit and the Balm, even with their products offered. Maybe that’s why people think Benefit is CF, because the Balm is
I started following you because of you being CF and i try wherever possible to only use CF on my face and body. I have preferred CF for years but Nars is what really riled me enough to go CF where I can. To be CF then go backwards speaks volumes of their backwards attitudes. Grrrrr
This video is super helpful and relatable! I switched to CF a couple years ago along with going Vegetarian. I also have been an Ulta employee for awhile and just discovered a few months ago that Benefit wasn’t CF (total bummer, they have some cute products!). Garnier and Neutrogena I was surprised to find out are also not CF, since it’s one that a lot of guests go to for more “natural” makeup removing solutions
Kelly, thank you for making this video. I think it’s important to put this information out there. Hopefully one day all makeup brands will be cruelty free 🐶🐱🐹🐰
Sarah Milkins they used to be cruelty free but then they started selling in China about 2 years ago and they still list “vegan” on some off their products so it’s easy to be confused 😢
Okay I wasn't shocked about any of them lol 😅. I think you should make a video of cruelty free brands you might have thought weren't. For example I really thought bare minerals wasn't cruelty free but I think Nicole cutler said they are and shes a cruelty free consumer. Another one was smashbox. I think they weren't but now they are... I would really like to see a video like that.
I know I was shocked. I just looked it up and cruelty free kitty states that bare minerals is cruelty free although it's parent company shiseido is not.
Love how you are cruelty free and vegetarian but are so accepting of other people’s choices!! I am newly vegan and cruelty free and this video was so helpful💕
This was wonderful, Kelly! Thank you so much for creating it. I would love to see more cruelty free content! Some of these surprised me, too! Due to severe allergies, I was stuck using Bobbi Brown for quite awhile. I tried to buy as little as possible, and it really pained me, but I didn’t have a choice. Thank goodness, my allergy is sooo much better (hopefully gone for good!🤞🏻), so I’m now cruelty free. It gives me so much joy to spend my money on brands I want to support. The new additions to my very small collection are Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation and Concealer, Kat Von D Shade and Light Contour and Shade and Light Eye Contour (the matte one). Too Faced Primed and Poreless Pressed Powder, Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette (being discontinued and is a steal at $27!), Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Demolition, Smashbox Photofinish Primerizer, First Aid Beauty Cleanser, and First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration. I was using a small cruelty free skincare brand before, but my skin is so dry now, I had to try something more heavy duty to hydrate my painfully dry skin. I still use the Honey Girl Organics Extra Sensitive Face and Eye Cream for my eyes and the Honey Girl Organics Extra Sensitive The Lotion Face and Body for my hands and body. A brand that I’m very keen to try is one I found on Instagram: Thrive Causemetics. They are vegan, cruelty free, free of very many toxins, and donate a portion of their profit to a charity to benefit women. They have some gorgeous lipstick colors (my dry lips can’t take liquid lipstick, so I’m referring to their traditional lipsticks) that I am quite eager to try. Their pencil eyeliner is on my list, too, if I don’t care for the Urban Decay eyeliner that’s coming soon from UPS (Sephora). Would you be willing to do a video of first impressions or a review on Thrive Causemetics? I’d love to know what you think of their products! I also wanted to say is that Zoya is an excellent vegan and cruelty free nail polish company. They also come out with trendy stuff, so I think they’re a great substitute for OPI and Essie. I always look up brands to see if they’re cruelty free, but Cruelty Free Kitty and Ethical Elephant (and many other similar sites) are great resources for people who are cruelty free. Congratulations on becoming vegetarian! That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you! I’m a vegetarian, too, for a couple of years now. I only buy organic from small companies because I want to buy food from animals that are as humanely treated as possible. If I weren’t ill and allergic to soy, gluten, and unable to eat legumes, I would be vegan in s heartbeat! That’s one of the things I greatly look forward to doing when I am better. For now, being vegetarian is sooooooooo much better than eating meat and fish, so I’m very grateful to be able to do that. Oh, I meant to say that there are vegans (though not many) who eat clams, mussels, and oysters because those creatures don’t feel pain. I just thought I would mention that in case you were interested. I’m so sorry this was such a long comment, Kelly. I just had so much to say. Take care, Kelly, and have a wonderful evening! 😘
Leah Brandman I love Thrive 💋, esp. their mascara & Warm Neutrals e/s palette!! Great cruelty free, vegan brand, esp. for dry/sensitive skin. (I also love First Aid Beauty Peeling Pads, Hada Labo Hyaluron & Puynkang Yul Essence Toners & Missha Real Solution Hyaluron & Collagen Sheet Masks on my super sensitive, dry skin. I mostly use Korean skin care, which really works. And if some one is interested in cruelty free medical grade skin care; Dr Dennis Gross is one of few cf brands on that field. Love esp. his Universal Peeling Pads 😘)
Hi Marcy. I have an app called cruelty cutter. all you do is scan an item and they will let you know if that item is CF. How deeply that is researched I have no idea, is the product sold in china, is the parent company CF, etc. Three hairspray products that come up as cf on my app is TIgi, Chi, and Freeze It. Don't know if the would interest you or not. I go for the maximum hold on my hairsprays, lol. This is at Walmart. I have not yet used it in Sally's or Ulta but I believe a brand from Sally's called Ion is cf and I think some are even vegan. But, if the need arises I will use a brand that my app states is CF rather than buy a brand that I KNOW is not. It also let's you boycott an item if its not cf and it gives you the option to send an email to the company asking about their cf status if that status comes up unknown on the app. Its a great little helper at the store.
I just started using Briogeo, who are CF and my hair! Never ever been so soft despite using Kerastase for years. No nasty eco damaging ingredients either. Highly recommended
Most people I know assume that L'Oreal, Garnier and Herbal Essences are CF. Probably because they market their products (especially hair stuff) to be vegan, but I feel it's really not enough to make the formula free of animal products. They need to be properly CF, because what they're doing now is shady to me.
I would love to see a video showing cruelty free brands. Thing is, its easy to find brands that are not cruelty free, so, though informative, not a lot surprised me in this video. I have just decided to go cruelty free for all cosmetics and am finding it very hard to find definitively cruelty free products, the research is time consuming! This is channel is a great resource but I would say more info about brands that ARE cruelty free rather than listing those that are not, as those tend to be the majority. Thanks! I'll be back, great video.
Thanks for this video! Lipstick Queen broke my heart. They used to be cruelty free but toward the middle/end of last year they started selling in China. I discovered this when I purchased a new lipstick from them and just happened to notice that the little bunny was no longer on the package. The lesson for me was that you can't assume even with trusted brands. I now regularly check to make sure the brands I love are still cruelty free before I make new purchases.
Shea moisture does not regulate their distributors from selling in international markets and abiding by their law, meaning they submit to theirs laws on animal testing and do not try to prevent such processes. Check logical harmony for brands to avoid list as well as an grey area list that has lots of brands on it.
Great video Kelly! I was surprised by Fresh too, I hate greenwashing! It’s when companies market themselves as healthy organic and clean but are not. it’s misleading and very easy to assume they are cruelty free. On the flip side I was shocked that Murad was cruelty free!
If I'm not mistaken, Laura Mercier just lost their cruelty free status because the company was acquired by one that does tests. I was surprised by Palladio because they say on their website that they don't test their ingridients or finished products.
I think so too but I was watching a video by livloveshermakeup where she said LM was not cruelty free so I looked online and found that they no longer consider LM as cruelty free but not much was explained
Living in Greece makes cruelty free options very limiting, but it’s also very hard to determine who does and who doesn’t test (since they are not obligated by law to mark it on their products in Europe). For me brands like KORRES that use to be owned by Greeks and used natural ingredients is upsetting to find out that they have changed their status to testing. I know for sure KORRES has started testing because they have started selling in China, but I think Apivita is not testing their products have 75-100% natural ingredients and I would recommend looking for them if they are indeed cruelty free 😘
My understanding is that they're no longer affiliated to Johnson and Johnson, which is good, but as to "being owned" I didn't find any info'. I did find out that they no longer sell in China - trying to be cruelty-free is an obstacle course! I always try but it's difficult to keep track!
Sarah Revela thank you so much! I’d love to buy from Korres (if they are cf and) if i could be certain that the money goes to the company in Greece not some big ass Johnson&Johnson.
This was super super helpful! Benefit caught me you, I bought a product from them the other day without even checking for some reason (I'm vegan so I usually always do). As soon as I left the store I was like ooohhhh nooo I didn't check but surely they're fine! Ah. Keep up the incredible content!
Fresh definitely shocked me! I knew before this video, but it just surprises me. Thanks for sharing these, Kelly! I will definitely watch out for these brands.
So weird, Benefit was the first brand I bought quite a few makeup products from 10 years ago when I decided to get into makeup. I could have sworn they were cruelty free 10 years ago because they made a TON of claims that made me turn to them to start. Maybe they changed in the last 10 years? Benefit, Fresh, and Kiehl’s were the most surprising on this list
It's very possible! As brands grow and move into new markets, they often stop being cruelty-free because they begin selling in countries that require animal testing :/
Benefit was originally CF, They changed around 2011. I remember because I bought a couple of products from them until then for that reason. First Benefit and now NARS *sigh*.
i 100% agree with your stance on international brands! I do sometimes use cruelty-free brands owned by bigger companies that test on animals, but only to signal to their parent brand that the cruelty-free companies they own are more profitable and that animal testing is something their consumers are aware of.
This is very helpful. There are a few brands I thought were CF but aren't. I started going CF about a year and a half ago, maybe longer. It's hard at first because a lot of brands say they are but they sell in China. They try to say that they don't test on products sold in the U.S. but if they sell in China they are NOT CF! I can't tell you how many brands I've argued with over this. Don't lie just to make money! Sorry I didn't mean to get into a rant.
Luanne Santos depends actually where in China. If they sell exclusively in Hong Kong they can be cruelty free because Hong Kong doesn't require animal testing
Amanda Wright also, if your warehouse is outside of China and you ship to China you don’t have to test I think. It’s only if you want to sell in Chinese stores that you have to test
Fresh and Benefit definitely surprised me idk why. Great video Kelly!!! :D Would love to see a video of brands you thought weren't but turned out to be CF!
I love that went Vegetarian. Check out Why Dairy is Scary next and thank you for being a selfless, conscious and kind human being to ALL living beings. X
Kelly Gooch Kelly, take all the time you need. It's very rare anyone cuts it all out. I was horrified when I found out about dairy and I recently watched a video where the Mum cow was running down the road after her calf that had been taken from her. I cry thinking about it. Thank you for what you're doing. X x
That's great that you are even trying. I can't have dairy so that one comes easy. I'll never forget when I learned in school that glue came from horses. I cry and wanted to go home. I refused to do my crafts. They tried to fail me but my mom took care of of it. Don't mess with a lioness's cub or you'll be lunch. 😁 I mean the still use the horses hoofs and stuff but only after they die or getting ready to die. This still gets to me so I use other ways to stick my papers together.
Crystal C This is a very disjointed and not very confident reply. At the end of the day, all the animals end up cramped in horrendous transportation and get their throats slit in a line. Imagine waiting in line to be murdered knowing there is no escape? Out of dairy, only 2% of consumed dairy is manufactured the old way. The rest are cows chained to rotating units, with heavy metal nipple clamps, put on a rape rack, where they are held still for a farmer to put his arm in its bum to the elbow and another arm in the vagina with a metal rod to insert the sperm. The cow will scream and fight whilst this happens. Once the calf is born, it is taken almost immediately and put in a cold tiny pen to fatten up before it's killed as a baby. The Mother cow will be repeatedly put through this agony until she either collapses and dies naturally, or is sent to slaughter for cat/dog food meat. I possess HUGE knowledge on the issues.
Crystal C Oh and if you hate the idea of animal testing, then I believe you have the kind heart to deep-down know the majority of what goes on is wrong. Animals feel pain and agony, they form families and their own eco-systems in the wild. They are smart and loving - they deserve much better. Be on the right side of history because within 50 years, it will become illegal to kill animals. It's called speciesism: we don't treat living creatures equally and we go further: we put the world's most innocent beings through the worst possible torture. Horrendous.
Very informative - thank you! Unrelated but I had to tell you - Kokie is sold in Meijer! I was in my local one tonight and saw a Kokie display and thought “I must tell Kelly!” It was just an end cap, but I wanted you to know in case you prefer Meijer to Walmart and were unaware. 🙂
Recently I found out Laura Mercier isn’t CF!!!! I was SO shocked, apparently they just recently started but I’m still very iffy on if they are or aren’t!
i have told to a lot people but i think this is the biggest misunderstanding that testing is for profit. there s absolutely no need to do the test for selling in china. a lot brands like wnw, physicians formula and milani, they make a warehouse in bonded area like hongkong, only sell online and ships all the package to the mainland. people like shopping online and shipping is very fast. so in my mind, brand like nars maybe being drunk and has hit there head. XD
x minimo selling in store opens up more area for revenue which is why they choose to do it. Because they don’t just want some profits, they want it all.
nono thats not how it works. opening stores take hugh amount of money, while people dont prefer buy in store. and having products test takes months. until then, not anything new anymore. thats why revlon dont have any store anymore. selling online can get all the profit. i will say.
x minimo having worked for one of these makeup brands I can tell you that unless you have a stand alone brand, you don’t actually have to invest that much money. You basically need to invest in the display for your brand, that it. And for a well established makeup brand like NARS or even L’Oreal, it’s pocket change. And although testing does take some time, it’s not that long if you have money. And lastly, although it is true that a lot of people buy most of cosmetic products online, in store shopping still brings in a LOT of revenue depending on the store locations.
Hi Kelly! I love when a you tuber is not afraid to show they are CF. Thank you so much for also going Vegetarian! What a major difference that makes! I love your channel. You are such a lovely young lady that this older woman woman loves to watch. I have to adjust and tweak the technique to suit my crepey old eyelids, lol but you give out great info on products that I use and some I am interested in. Just wanted to let you know that you also have a more "mature" lady in your viewing audience. Also wanted to mention the app Cruelty Cutter. You can scan items at the store and it will let you know if they are CF or not. Whether than includes parent companies or if the product is sold in china, I'm not sure. But as I said below, I would much rather support one of those companies than one that I know is not CF. Its a handy little app to have when you're out shopping. Sorry for the long novella, but I just wanted to put that out there. Thanks for listening.
First video I’ve watched on your channel. I became I subscriber right away! I agree with you. Some brands choose profit over morals & I don’t buy their products. I became cruelty free beginning of this year & I love the journey I’m on!
A few that have surprised me that test are Origins and First Aid Beauty (they use ingredients that have been tested on animals). Another thing to consider is there are ways around selling in China and not testing on animals. A brand can source everything within China and not have to test on animals. The only example of this that I know of is Nude Stix. I don’t want people to assume they test because they sell in China. Bravo to them for going the extra mile!
Hey doll! According to Logical Harmony (my most trusted source for CF info!) FAB is CF! But wonderful point about Nude Stix! I planned to mention that in the video but forgot. Thank you :)
I do think that I’ve heard if a brand doesn’t sell their products in physical stores, they don’t have to be tested. Can’t remember where I heard that though.
Thanks for mentioning the most tricky part about CF in China! If the brand sources all of their ingredients and manufactures it their they do not have to test. I didn't realize that companies not headquartered there could do it to? I thought you had to be a Chinese company for that to apply?
Kelly, I am also trying to curate my collection to be cruelty free. I very much appreciate your research and sharing this information with us. I do look to you as a resource for good information because of your cruelty free intentions. Keep up the great work!
If you follow Jen loves reviews, she had a big rant about loccitane who told her to remove a vid she did saying they tested but she didn't cave in. That is toooo shady and they should be outed!
I don't even know why would anyone associate natural and minimal with cruelty free, they're clearly different things. A very useful thing to do, at least for me, is going to the PETA website. It has huge lists of cruelty free and non-cruelty free brands, not only make up. They're in PDF format but if you don't want to download it, in the website you can also just type the brand and it tells you if it tests or not. Not only that but it also adds if the brand is vegan, feateures the PETA logo and/or is a PETA Mall partner. The other day actually I consulted a brand and it turns out that it's working towards reducing or stopping its animal testing. That's another thing I forgot to mention, the lists are updated every month I think. The bad part is that some brands aren't in any of the lists (cruelty free or non cruelty free)
I'm so sad because the Simple moisturizer is what I use. It's hard to find silicone free moisturizers. Does anyone know of a good one? It has to be silicone free. Silicones wreak havoc on my skin.
Elise Nicole I use the Rosette Ceramide cream (Japan beauty) and am in love with how it has improved my skin. Try finding it on Amazon or if you have any local Asian beauty stores. Sebamed also has one I like. The clear face care gel. The ordinary face cream didn't have silicones, but it gave me blackheads ALL OVER my face. Complex-15 face cream. I'm not a hundred percent sure whether these brands are cruelty free or not (and by which definition of cruelty free).
I just realized I accidentally put the complex-15 moisturizer in there. It DOES have silicone. I was trying to remember why I never use it and then I remembered that I bought it thinking maybe it wouldn't bother me since the silicone was further down the list and maybe I wasn't really allergic anyway. But while it took longer for me to react, I did eventually. I forgot to mention Juice beauty. They don't use silicones and although I haven't tried their moisturizer, I do like their SPF moisturizer. Some Caudalie products are silicone free, Korres are silicone-free, so are Drunk Elephant although they're pricy!
Do you really think anything can be cruelty free though, I mean I’ve been researching this myself and it doesn’t seem like there’s anything that’s cruelty free, if someone really wants to be cruelty free they would have to take everything, out of their house including their furniture, there’s just no way because if you track back through the years almost every ingredient has been tested on animals at some point! And I understand how some brands can say well we no longer test on animals, but what about all the ingredients you already tested on animals?? I’m glad some brands are trying to be better, and I haven’t finished watching your video but even brands that claim to be cruelty free, use jargon that disguises they’re real intent in a lot of ways.
It's not because we live in a world where so many items and ingredients come from animals or are tested on a animals, that every step we take to not do that anymore is in vain. It's quite the opposite; it is brave. As so many people reason the same way as you do... and say something along the lines of that things just are the way they are. Some of us just want to do the right thing, and YES WE CAN! Step by step. Choice by choice. You dont need to turn your whole life around in one breath. Unless you want to. But f.e. over the years I have become vegan, I only use crueltyfree makeup and search for the vegan products, I dont buy shoes or belts or whatever with leather, no sweaters or jackets with wool or down, ... though as she said in her intro; none of us are perfect, we just strive to do the best we can, to make the best informed choices we possibly can. We cant do more than that. The fact that we are willing to learn and change... to ensure a better world, THAT is where real change start that is best for us, others and the world. And all that beautiful compassion and passion to do these things are never overshadowed by the fact that some things in our lives arent 100% crueltyfree YET. That is my opinion at least. Cause I see the changes around me! Not only the changes of heart, but also in the supermarkets, restaurants, shoestores, ... and many more. It all comes down to your own principles and how you act upon them to the best of your capacities. Character is everything. And if people feel like all that effort is offensive to them or that it wont change the whole world anyway, thats their beliefsystem. If they keep on believing that, nothing will change indeed. But we now have the LUXURY to DO GIVE A DAYUM! 🐰🐁🐒🐶🐱🐇🐾👏🏻🙌🏼
P.s. I get what u mean by not being able to track back every ingredient to its origins and maybe at one point it being tested on animals, but we cant do more than now just read their policies, ask questions, inform ourselves of where they sell... and make the best informed choice in our eyes. In the end they will notice the huge peoples demand for crueltyfree and even vegan products (no crushed beetles inside for the red lipstick aka carmine) and will act upon it! Just like i see sooo many vegan options appearing in supermarkets now 🤗
Great video Kelly! Thanks for the useful information!! Btw, the essence brand gel nail polishes are cruelty free and are a great bang for your buck!! I love them!💅
Huda beauty. How can they be cruelty free when they sale mink lashes ? No matter what that's not cruelty free. You can't touch a mink without stressing it out. Also they are housed in mink farms. Which is cruel.
Thank you for this informative video. I was unaware also that simply was not cruelty free. I do enjoy these videos as I am trying to be cruelty free with my make up and sometimes find it hard to find products that are cruelty free.
Some other cruelty free nail polishes that I HIGHLY recommend are Zoya ($8-10 but w/ regular great sales via their website/ email list that easily cut the price in half), Julie G (~$4 @ RiteAids & on the Jesse’s Girl website, which has free shipping @ $25; topcoat is one of my top faves), & for an easy to find anywhere option Wet n Wild ($1-4, though $3-4 square MegaLast are IMO the best formula). I also really like Nails Inc as well as Butter London’s 5xShine Formula (silver lids) though both are definitely pricier & not something I’d say is worth the full price point unless there’s a REALLY special/ unique color. That said, Butter London polishes have often been included in ULTA’s 21 days of beauty sales for half off & Nails Inc has been offering some $15 duos that are definitely worth the buy if you truly like both shades. Last but not least, for polish lovers wanting something truly unique or special the indie nail polish world has oodles of gorgeous & fun options, many/ most of which are cruelty free. And Re: Lipstick Queen, they actually were cruelty free up until a bit before you made the switch to CF. I’d fallen in love w/ their Sinner/ Saint line when half off during ULTA 21 days of beauty & I was SO bummed when they made the choice to forgo their CF status😡.
The Malamute Pack they use suppliers who test, any brand can write “not tested on animals” on the bottle as long as that physical product hasn’t been tested, but the company can still take part in animal testing and/or test ingredients on animals
Courtney Taylor Makeup Logical Harmony is better than leaping bunny, even leaping bunny have loopholes in afraid. Leaping Bunny don’t care the if the brand uses suppliers who test on animals, which shea moisture do
It really is amazing how much branding affects how you view a company's CF status. I know I recently had the "whoa" moment with Fresh. Sidenote, good on ya becoming vegetarian!
Do you use the leaping bunny app? They are pretty on the ball with their products. Even excluding ones that sell in countries that require testing whereas peta does not.
I thought benefit was cruelty free for the longest time and replacing their porefessional primer has been a nightmare but I think the nyx pore filling primer has a very similar texture and works as well as the benefit one for me. So there’s a little trick if you want to replace that primer.
Wow, I never realized this at all. I slowly been switching over to cruelty free and natural products. I feel sometimes when finding natural & cruelty free products to replace what you are using now it can be hard to find something comparable.
I was surprised by 'benefit' in the past. Because I confused some of their products with ' the balm'. I am sad and disappointed by ' Palladio'. I think they used to be cruelty free.
I've been using cruelty free makeup for about a year or so now and I have found new products because of you. I actually got a brow pencil from Benefit to test from Influenster, and I liked it but it bums me out that they're not cruelty free
I’d love the opposite version of this like “Brands you might be surprised to learn are cruelty-free”
Arna Alayne I would love to see this too!
Yes please!
Yessss
Kylie Jenner cosmetics are all cruelty-Free and almost all of them are vegan, which surprised me! Becca is another brand that surprises a few people because they don't advertise their CF stance.
I buy CF products only, but it kind of bothers me when a company is CF and doesn't say so on the packaging. Why not? Be proud of that. I think it helps the brand.
There really is no excuse to NOT be cruelty free. It’s makeup. It’s a choice and people need to stop justifying animal torture.
Crazy Hondamom Exactly my view on this whole topic! Save the animals!
Facts like there’s cruelty free dupes that are drugstore brands like wet & wild , elf , Milani
I couldn't agree more, makeup is not a necessity.
Crazy Hondamom thank you!!
Thank you! 👏
being cruelty free is one of the great decisions I made in my life
absolutely loved your disclaimer at the beginning about how no one is perfect, especially CF people, vegans, or vegetarians. i have been vegan for about 6 or 7 years now and i am STILL learning to this day which products are vegan and cruelty free. even some foods i get confused about. it is a constant learning curve and i really appreciate when those who are CF/vegan/vegetarian make it a point to say they are not perfect and that they are still learning too!! it puts such a bad light on the community when people act like they're better than others because they don't eat meat or use CF products. i just thought it was really nice you mentioned that and i am so impressed by the acceptance and respect in the comments as well!!!
Last I checked Brazil also requires animal testing, has that changed?
Leigh Hillenbrand..no they banned it as well. Mainland China is the only place that requires it.
Those ones really surprised me too!!
I thought by terry was cruelty free, how’d that happen?
MaryEllen After 60 Sadly most of the most expensive US brands (like Tom Ford, La Mer) and almost all French luxury brands are not cruelty free :/ I was very disappointed with Nars & By Terry also! So glad to hear, that you are buying only cruelty free goodies 😘 I’m surprised, how many beauty gurus, and esp. more mature (and wiser ;) vloggers still don’t think these things at all/only think how much money they can do with sponsored vids..
I just topped up Clarins skin care 😨.
Nars swore they’d never changed it was important to Nars himself and they went against it. 😡
Honestly I love essence, the price is right, the products are great, packaging is cute and THEY ARE CRUELTY FREE 💓🐰
Fruzsi i second this!!!
No Essence is far from cruelty free, look up The Asian Dog Meat Trade, that will shock you the atrocities
Fresh is the one brand I was soooo bummed about. They used to be cruelty free, but they started selling to China. I used to love their products, but I will no longer be purchasing from them. Please bring back cruelty free status Fresh!
Try Ilia’s tinted lip balms (can’t remember the name). They look similar to the ones by Fresh. :)
TheHonestBeautyReview their face masks are so great! They need to be cruelty free again.
Hai, can you tell me why are brands that selling in china must test their products to animal?thank you
I wish I could find a face cleanser similar to Fresh Soy Face Cleanser.
This was a helpful video! I didn’t know about a few of these brands, so thanks for sharing Kelly! 💗
I'm glad that it was helpful! :)
Love your channel andrea
Mac is not cruelty free but they often lie about it, which makes me boycott them and pledge to keep doing so even if they ever become cruelty free.
I didn't know they lied about it? I thought it was well known by everyone that they do test
Laura Gallaher they lie and obfuscate about their cruelty free status. Other brands do the same, btw.
They just say like 'yeah we don't test on animals unless it's required by law. Acting all innocent and stuff 🙄
Some guy working in ulta tried to argue with me that they are cruetly free even though I told him they aren't since they sell in China when he pressed me as to why I didn't want to buy the mac product he was trying to push on me instead of the urban decay product I was already purchasing.
Yeah. That type of creative wording always makes me feel like, "I don't murder. I just deliver them to the ppl who do."
Beagles, in particular, because they are "trusting." (How disgusting is that?)
I don't judge anyone else's choices, but when I learned about the dog thing years ago, it really pushed me over the edge and I went fully CF.
I’m transitioning to cruelty free. Loved this video! Also disappointed Fresh and benefit are not cruelty free.
I didn’t want to waste the rest and had already payed for it and done the damage, yet was shamed for this because I wasn’t in a position to get more
I'm shocked that the Ulta in house brand IS cruelty free! Super glad to hear it though! Awesome video
Great video. Grateful for the updates. Companies change so quickly I have a hard time keeping up, even with all the CF sites available to consult.
I think this is awesome!!! Especially considering the Sephora brand is not!!
It's not makeup, but I bought Green Works disinfectant wipes only to realize they are owned by Clorox. I never bought those again but I felt tricked.
I never understood the EU ban of products tested on animals. Isn't it just bs? They sell loreal, maybelline and sooo many other brands all over Europe
I haven't tried KL polish yet, but they are cruelty free and I love the color selection
You, Me, and the Dog. They’re really good! Smooth, most are pigmented, and they wear well on me
I have found so many cute vegan and cruelty free nail polish brands: Floss Gloss, I-Scream Nails, Zapora, F.U.N Lacquer, Color Club, Law Essentials, Zoya, Platte Polish, Superchic Lacquer, Bella Lacquer and more!
MissAmyxo I thought Boscia was cruelty free too for a long time! It was probably one of the most disappointing moments learning they weren’t
Thought for sure Huda Beauty was cruelty free?! I'll have to look into them some more!
Naomi Sandstrom Nope, they sell real mink lashes :(
does that make Morphe not cruelty free as well then?
Huda Beauty is cruelty free though
Pat McGrath surprised me! I was looking into investing in some of her products such as an eyeshadow palette and a lip balm but not anymore.
Rue Roxanne There you go! 🙂
Janel B Keep going Janelle. When out actions align with our feelings, it evokes change in the world. X
If you care about animals go Vegan and align your morals with your actions
Philosophy was one that surprised me! I do miss Purity.
That one really surprised me too!!
so glad you made this video!! i feel like a lot of people just assume certain brands are CF without checking. and it doesn't help that many brands promote themselves as being CF when they're actually not.
I had NO idea Lipstick Queen isn’t cruelty free.. I actually purchased one of their lipsticks and love it. Bummer!
I always feel a bit guilty when I find out when I accidentally purchase animal tested makeup.
Going cruelty-free is a process and it's normal to make a mistake every once in a while! What matters is that you're trying :)
Same for me. I did an checked my makeup yesterday and I have so much non cruelty free makeup. I'm glad I did that so I can focus more in the future!
Trust me. I bought a PERFECT match of foundation and it was covergirl... I was and still am upset. I’m look immediately for an alternative.
I've never even heard of that brand!
Another one that really surprises me is the haircare brand OGX!
That's another great example!
Okay, when did they stop being CF? My bottles specifically say they don't test on animals.
They started selling in China in 2015
Yep that one got me too I have a set of product to use up from them then the search is one for new products that can work for my very frizz prone hair
Before the name change, they sounded like an organic brand. Organix.
Not sure if it’s like this for everybody but I sometimes confuse benefit and the Balm, even with their products offered. Maybe that’s why people think Benefit is CF, because the Balm is
Jennifer Moras I get them switched up all the time too
I used to confuse these too
Great video! I didn’t know Simple and Lipstick Queen were not cruelty free 😿 I don’t purchase from them much but will no longer.
Those ones really surprised me too :/
I read somewhere that Lipstick Queen was and now I regret buying it. 😢
You might be surprised that Victoria’s Secret tests their fragrances and body lotions, etc. on animals.
I always thought this was weird considering their sister company, bath and body works, is cruelty free (at least I think!)
I started following you because of you being CF and i try wherever possible to only use CF on my face and body. I have preferred CF for years but Nars is what really riled me enough to go CF where I can. To be CF then go backwards speaks volumes of their backwards attitudes. Grrrrr
Ginger Badjie they were just bought by Shiseido which is not cruelty free. Their values didn’t change.
I've said loads of your points before! It's so nice that there's a community for cruelty free makeup! I love it!♡
I too was shocked about Simple and Pat Mcrath!
Thank you for doing this video! It really helps :) Another brand people think is cruelty free is Batiste when they are not :(
Thank you for watching, Paulina! xoxo
Paulina Beauty ... Omg I thought they were! They got me with the bunny picture 😭 welp guess I need a new dry shampoo now 😐
Paulina Beauty whaaaaat!!?!?! Noooo 😭
Sarah Milkins they used to be cruelty free but then they started selling in China about 2 years ago and they still list “vegan” on some off their products so it’s easy to be confused 😢
I didn't know this! I'm going to stick with the Superdrug own.
Oooh thats a great idea! And funny that you mention that because I also didn't expect that Bare Minerals would be CF!
I know I was shocked. I just looked it up and cruelty free kitty states that bare minerals is cruelty free although it's parent company shiseido is not.
Yes! I just commented that I was surprised when I found out Charlotte Tilbury is cruelty free.
Great idea!
Jennifer Moras me too! And I was shocked when I found out marc Jacobs cosmetics and Kevin Aucoin are cruelty free as well
Red eyeshadow suites you! + Thnx for the vid!!
You should try KL Polish. They're cruelty free and have the best nail polishes imo. 😁
I would love more videos like this! Sometimes it’s so hard to find an actual answer about a certain brand.
I will have to film more :)
Hey Kelly! Awesome video! I love your creative video ideas. I was shocked when I learned that Origins was not cruelty free.
Love how you are cruelty free and vegetarian but are so accepting of other people’s choices!! I am newly vegan and cruelty free and this video was so helpful💕
What a helpful and surprising video. Such a bummer about fresh
I would love a video on you favorite cruelty free hair products! I was at Target the other day and I could not find a single CF hairspray
Hair is definitely a hard category! I will have to film a video soon :)
Ginger Badjie I love Briogeo products! They're great for my curly hair!
marcie frey The Paul Mitchell line is cruelty free, but they can be pricey
Interesting topic Kelly! Thanks for sharing!
Most people I know assume that L'Oreal, Garnier and Herbal Essences are CF. Probably because they market their products (especially hair stuff) to be vegan, but I feel it's really not enough to make the formula free of animal products. They need to be properly CF, because what they're doing now is shady to me.
EllieElfin L’Oréal is one of the biggest offenders, maybe THE biggest.
Agree!
Why would they need animal products anyway as fruit is the best product for hair and skin.
Nightingale Amadeus do you wash your hair and skin with fruit?
I would love to see a video showing cruelty free brands. Thing is, its easy to find brands that are not cruelty free, so, though informative, not a lot surprised me in this video. I have just decided to go cruelty free for all cosmetics and am finding it very hard to find definitively cruelty free products, the research is time consuming! This is channel is a great resource but I would say more info about brands that ARE cruelty free rather than listing those that are not, as those tend to be the majority. Thanks! I'll be back, great video.
L'occitane. Another one that lies about being cruelty free.
It’s so irritating when cruelty free brands are acquired by those that aren’t ugh
Depends what you call cruelty free. MNy people don't count a parent company that isn't cruelty free as making the brand itself non-cf.
I think so too but I was watching a video by livloveshermakeup where she said LM was not cruelty free so I looked online and found that they no longer consider LM as cruelty free but not much was explained
To me they are cruelty free until they start selling in china
A brand loses its cruelty free status once they have physical stores or etc in China
Your voice is so soothing and I’m so happy to have found your channel!
I think Korres have now stopped selling in China. I live in Greece too :-)
Used to be owned? Did another company buy them or..? Now I’m curious.
I agree 100%
This was super super helpful! Benefit caught me you, I bought a product from them the other day without even checking for some reason (I'm vegan so I usually always do). As soon as I left the store I was like ooohhhh nooo I didn't check but surely they're fine! Ah. Keep up the incredible content!
The last two times I’ve visited ULTA I was told that both make up forever and benefit ARE cruelty free. bastards.
rebeldiamond 323 feel your annoyance
Michelle Go I think that might be the case, because I have the same memory haha
hwolter90 I thought it was just me! Disappointing if that’s the case
I loved Benefit 😭 I thought they were CF for the longest time.
You should try ginger and liz nail polish! It’s the same price as OPI and Essie (so higher end) but it performs SO well
SIMPLE IS NOT VEGAN 😭😭
Edit: I’m pretty shocked/dissapointed bc I liked the brand
Fresh and Benefit definitely surprised me idk why. Great video Kelly!!! :D Would love to see a video of brands you thought weren't but turned out to be CF!
They definitely surprised me too!!
I love that went Vegetarian. Check out Why Dairy is Scary next and thank you for being a selfless, conscious and kind human being to ALL living beings. X
I'm in the process of cutting out dairy! It's a slow transition but I'm working on it :)
We need more videos like this
Recently I found out Laura Mercier isn’t CF!!!!
And lastly, although it is true that a lot of people buy most of cosmetic products online, in store shopping still brings in a LOT of revenue depending on the store locations.
yeah i m just saying as a chinese consumer as i m. animal testing isnt necessary at all.
Simple, fresh, pat McGrath, benefit, nars, essie, opi, sally hansen, lipstick queen, Sephora brand, Palladio, kiehls, makeup forever, Clarisonic. I am shook. 😭😢
Wait is Kokie CF? I just assumed they did test.
They're CF :)
HeidiKMakeup Hold up! Kokie is cf? That sort of makes up for shea moisture...
Simple has my favorite makeup remover wipes. Well, guess I'll be looking for a new brand... ☹️
Tante Fresh Eyes $12
Pacifica Coconut Cleansing Wipes $6
Yes To Coconut Cleansing Wipes $6
Skyn Iceland Glacial Wipes $15
I'll have to check out that app! And thank you for the sweet words, it means the world! xoxo
Feed My Sheep AMO ORIGINS?? Wow I would have never thought! Haha I guess natural and organic doesn’t include no animal testing
I do think that I’ve heard if a brand doesn’t sell their products in physical stores, they don’t have to be tested. Can’t remember where I heard that though.
Burt’s bees got around that too
Thanks for mentioning the most tricky part about CF in China!
I'm so glad that it is helpful! xoxo
l'occitane, Mally, lorac, & origins surprised me too.
Wow, I didn't even realize that Mally tested! Good thing that I don't own anything from them :/
If you follow Jen loves reviews, she had a big rant about loccitane who told her to remove a vid she did saying they tested but she didn't cave in. That is toooo shady and they should be outed!
Ginger Badjie I saw that video! I was proud of her for exposing them!
Lorac is now cf if you check the cf sites
Do you have a source for Mally? Everything I've found says they are cruelty free
Thanks! I will look those up.
Try the whipped kale moisturizer from youth to the people. Their product line is clean and all natural.😊
i would recommend the body shop vitamin e moisturizer 100%, absolutely LOVE the ethics behind the brand as well as all their extensive ranges
Very surprising and very helpful. It's so discouraging to learn that many of my fav brands are choosing not to be completely cruelty free.
I love them!💅
Oh yes! I love the Essence polishes! xoxo
And their make me brow is fab too!!! Just replaced my benefit gimme brow. The quality is amazing and soooooo much cheaper + CF!!!
Burt's Bees? Ugh 💜
Burt's Bee's is cruelty free
Burt's Bees isn't cruelty free anymore
ai2em yes they are.
Sorry ya'll, Burt's selling in China now.
amanda maciog they pulled out of China last year
I actually had a Clarisonic in my cart on Prime day and never bothered to buy it. I’m so glad now!!! Loved this video
Thank you doll!!
I would suggest you Foreo instead of Clarisonic, cause also their skincare products are CF!
Yes and the Foreo is lower maintenance to boot. I just charge mine. Don't have to keep buying brush heads or batteries.
Giorgia G thanks for that tip! As soon as Kelly said Clarisonic I was thinking what do I switch to?
Mac is also non cruelty-free
I was bummed out when I discovered Shea Moisture was on the brands to avoid list on logical harmony.
Serena Hall why? They claim to be CF in the bottle
The Malamute Pack they use suppliers who test, any brand can write “not tested on animals” on the bottle as long as that physical product hasn’t been tested, but the company can still take part in animal testing and/or test ingredients on animals
I use Shea Moisture soap and it absolutely is cruelty free and it’s marked with the bunny on the packaging. 100% virgin coconut oil shea butter soap
Courtney Taylor Makeup Logical Harmony is better than leaping bunny, even leaping bunny have loopholes in afraid. Leaping Bunny don’t care the if the brand uses suppliers who test on animals, which shea moisture do
Lizz Kingshott WOW 😮 O really have to do more research
Agree! Used to love Kiehl’s and Simple so much. Dont know why I have this though until i found out they’re not.
The website Logical Harmony has a fantastic list of CF brands which is updated weekly, and it's so useful.
My thoughts exactly, I'd love to see a cruelty free list. What I'd really love is a cruelty free skin and hair care video.
I really enjoyed your intro explanation, it was really thoughtful. Thank you Kelly!
Sephora is not CF? Wow. For some reason, I thought it was. Good video Kelly, and lovely makeup as always! ❤️
Thank you. I knew about some, but now I am more aware. I am slowly just not buying from certain brands and my list grows as I learn ❤
I was surprised by 'benefit' in the past. Because I confused some of their products with ' the balm'.
I am sad and disappointed by ' Palladio'. I think they used to be cruelty free.
I’ve just recently found out simple wasn’t cruelty free and I have to say I was blown away!
I've been using cruelty free makeup for about a year or so now and I have found new products because of you. I actually got a brow pencil from Benefit to test from Influenster, and I liked it but it bums me out that they're not cruelty free
