  • Out of the barn and into Bill's shop to begin working on the '71 Dart Swinger. Plus, Bill fires up his 1931 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Finally, Bill shows us a rare car hidden under a tarp.

    One of the things that stuck out to me while listening to Old Bill and his buddies is nobody swears! It's right nice to hear real men talk without swearing. Also, I read some of the other posts and you know what? I don't care if Old Bill is wrong about the "factory primer" or that he made me nervous, too, using that razor blade, I'm just amazed at what a fine gentleman he is and so forth and so on. Neat guy.

    Brings back memories, when I was 18 in 1994 I had a 71 Dart Swinger with a 318, the owner had painted blue over the original plum crazy paint. I was driving it and in the process of restoring it when a kid on a bike pulled out in front of me and I ended up putting it on it's driver's side. I was able to drive it but it did damage to the underneath and I couldn't afford to fix it in place and redo it so I sold it, the guy I sold it to hopefully was able to bring it back. Was a lot of fun to drive and went like a bat out of hell even with just the 318. Mine also had the build sheet under the back seat too, mine had an all black interior.

    That " Yellow primer " is body fill primer. I use it a lot when I repaint older cars as it helps to fill in pits to make it real smooth.

    Your car appears to be originally brown. Hood scoops, trunk spoiler and rear stripe was a 1970 thing only. The rear stripes were tape and not paint. The stamped holes on the undersides of the trunk was a carry over from 1970 and probably ended when the 1970 supply ran out. I have Dusters like that and noticed it. When they repainted the engine compartment they painted over the wiring harness and hood latch and spring. Other wise someone probably did a complete restoration on it at one time in it's life. Still a good find! I have two 1970 Swinger 340's. One in Panther Pink.

    I think on the last video of this car,it showed him pressure washing the door panel,I would bet that he pressure washed the back seat and unknowingly got that build sheet in a little worse condition , plus he said it sat outside for at least 7 years, with no back window for some time,but in his defense, I wouldn’t have known about the build sheet if not for mr jerry mentioning it

    I would say those spots on the rear deck are from hail damaged that someone has shrunk back up again . Living where I do it's not unusual to find hail damage .To shrink them back up is often as simple as applying heat with a hairdrier and applying dry ice . You can burn the paint with the hairdrier ,hence the primer spots. A few years ago you could still vinyl top kits from various upholstery wholesalers and i wouldn't be surprised if a kit for that car is still available. Yugo , you go push when stop .In Cyrillic it was originally called the Застава Корал. They built over 790,000 of them and it was none other than Malcom Bricklin who sold them in the USA ,I think he managed to off load 140,000 roughly over several years.Thats a rare car now and would probably excite the odd ball commy car collector nuts out there. Mechanical parts are easy because they are actually a Fiat 127 reskinned.

  • @garykerkstra1067
    @garykerkstra1067 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The yellow primer looks like Glasurit high build catalyzed primer we used in the early 90's when I was painting in a dealer shop. I agree with previous comments, that the car was originally the bronze color shown on her package shelf. Just a few seconds prior to that in the video, it's is also evident on the seat mount structure on the drivers floor panel

  • @xdrfox
    @xdrfox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    should put some larger washers over them holes catching both layers of metal on the deck spoiler... yes paint them orange too

  • @TylersNeighborhoodGarage
    @TylersNeighborhoodGarage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It'll be a nice car when finished but as several people have noted, it's not originally an orange car. There are MORE Mopars of this era now that are painted High-Impact colors like Vitamin C, Lemon Twist and the ever popular Sassy Grass green, than there EVER were originally. The yellow bondo is in a location where there was NEVER bondo originally.
    If you look at enough A-bodies, you learn quickly that every single square inch besides the upper door frames,dash frame and steering column is body color, in this case K6 bronze. In fact, it's been repainted at least twice because of all the weird off-white paint. The trunk is painted body color, underhood is painted body color...you get the idea. No harm in it not being original, but now you can build it the way you want without being bound to orange. Good luck and have fun.

    I bought a 70 dart gt back in 83 in valley Park mo. for
    $ 100 . Just a 318-2v but it had factory hi back seats,ac ,ps, pb
    It had a freeze plug pushed out by flex plate and the ol Man was moving. The ash tray in dash was never used and the rest of the car was
    "darn" near perfect, I drove it for 80 k . Great car!

    my brother worked for malcolm bricklin th man that imported yugos, malcolm moved his company World Motors to a small town called Meeker Colorado.the company headquarters was located on a huge property up the white river from the town and the road was littered with broke down yugos. if you worked for bricklin he would sell you a yugo for a very low price like 1999.00which was about a thousand less than retail. interestingly bricklin originally built the bricklin ford and was the first to import subaru and also developed a super car called the Vector.

    Factory used Green dip primer, then red, and gray primer or black and gray primer. Never yellow. Also the factory never painted under vinyl roofs. Trunk was painted body color originally. The only Mopar with a factory speckle finish in the trunk were the C-Bodies. A Dart is an A-Body. The Dart looks like a restoration that was half completed more than an original car.

  • @michaela.660
    @michaela.660 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am fairly sure that the primed spots on the deck lid is a repair due to the deck lid
    stiffening frame adheasive would strip the primer and leave bare metal at the glue
    points and condensation would form, allowing the metal to pit rust through the skin
    from the underside. It was a common problem with all manufacturers and the
    condensation. That is the reason the deck lid insulation panel is on the floor
    of the trunk and the underside of the deck lid has fresh paint, I hope they treated
    the underside surface with Phosforic acid and then primed.

    I find it funny how people from the time of these cars know nothing about them. The original color is the brown you see where the rear speakers are. The spoiler "Though admitted it is an add on" is the wrong one for a 1971 and the trunk lids all had the inner metal stamped for a spoiler after 1969 till 1974 I believe.

    This car has already been restored at least once. The under hood pad and the jacking instructions are reproductions. The seat covers are reproductions. It has obviously been painted and eventually wrecked. I bet it looked nice back in the day. It's a $1000-$1500 car. If he can get the paint right and by the way make the entire trunk and the rear tray match the body, it might bring $10K.

You can get the vinyl replaced, it was factory vinyl. The rear spoiler was a factory option though the cutouts were there for some reason. Bumpers will be hard to find.

    Sorry to say, but the old man has no idea what he is talking about. The yellow primer is not factory, factory primer was a dark red color. Also, the paint code is GK6 which was shown in the last video of the car. You can clearly see that color is still on the package tray. The rear spoiler was not even an available option in 1971 on a Dart built for U.S. spec. It also has a 1972 quarter panel that has been installed on the drivers side as you can see that the marker light is no right for a 71. Another note. The seats upholstery is not "original" to the car, as the front headrests are not present, or even the bezels. They have been recovered at some point. All in all, this is an older restoration, and then was wrecked. Just hate to see misinformation being told as fact.

      Yep, I agree, he's not as knowledgeable as he thinks. And the jacking instruction decal is way too nice. They typically shrink and wrinkle over time, as they were paper. This is an order restoration.

      The rear spoiler is also missing the underside brackets to support the wing, they were not bolted to the outer skin. I owned a 71 , and added the scoops, the factory hoods on these cars and other mopars of this vintage all have the cutouts for the scoops and wings In the bracing even though they didn't all come with them. Nice solid looking car though.

      Where not all hood and deck lids pre-punched at the factory? I gave my brother a Dart Sport hood scoop which he bolted on his 75 Dart swinger because the indentation where already in the underside in 1981.

      no not in the dart or duster but the swinger it came on all them and with 2 hood scoops. but they only came in black no matter what color the car is. and they also came with a 225 slant 6 or 318. no 340 or 360 was ever put in a swinger. oh and all my dusters and demons ALL had a yellow primer on them but i want to say it looked more like body filler than primer really.

    That is a factory looking 340 dart with a factory 318 engine if that makes sense...I think that is a dart sizzler...I know for a fact that a Plymouth duster with the same option is called a twister and I think for a dart it's called a sizzler

      They never made a Dart Sizzle. They did make a Demon Sizzler tho. Those all came with a 225 or 318.

    A friend of mine's father sold yougo' s at his dealership. According to sales they sold 141,000 plus in the U.S. I think that's more than 76.

    I call BS that it's original paint on that car. You can clearly see overspray paint on the rubber washer hose
    The rubber bumpers for the hood and the spring and hood latch should not be painted the same color as the
    car. In the trunk, the hinge was partially painted and the trunk area was a different color than the rest of the car.
    It should be the same color in the trunk as the outside of the car. There is also overspray in the wheel wells
    when it was painted orange. The floor pan and package tray is also a different color.

      It was that bronze colour dodge had back then. There is a video showing the original paint code, don't recall what it was, something like grk or gkr or?

      Ink on build sheets tend to run when you hit them with a pressure washer.

    If it's a Swinger that engine should be a high output 340. Look it up on the Dodge website for Swingers. Dodge made the 340 just for the dart swingers.

    • @dennisknox3353
      @dennisknox3353 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not correct. They made thousands of Dart Swingers in 1971. All 2 door Darts were called Swingers, and came with either the 225 slant six, or a 318 2 barrel V8. Also in 1971 there were about 20 340 Dart Swingers built, but only sold in Canada.

    Might let him know that the inside of that trunk is supposed to be body color. Someone has sprayed GM speckle trunk paint in there at some point in its life.

    I thought yellow primer was a sealing primer, my dodge of a few years before that time had a red primer but sometimes manufacturers did run out briefly and used a differnt type of primer depending on where it was assembled..Like the Harley my dad had one a few years younger with a sidecar and a reverse. I would be suspect of those being original seats being vinyl but hey anything's possible. I think people push these "barn finds" a bit much esp when some of them don't tell you how much they had to pay .Or when they found something they bothered the hell out of the owners which I had experience in. I owned a 66 mustang 2+2 fastback and had two guys bothering the hell out of me for years. Whether this cars an earlier restoration or not I don't know but I am wondering if that is a 340, not a 318. Basically the same engine just a different bore and stroke. Seems like that hood and the spoiler would have come with a 340 not a 318. If it makes the old guy happy all that matters. Gives him something to do it's all good.
