Not surprised they announced another version of the Ally is on the way. I expected an announcement during CES. These companies are going to treat these devices like laptops so expect annual or bi-annual updates on regular. But if they are spending money on R&D and retooling assembly lines for product refreshes great for gamers as a whole. Great vid!
Thank you for watching! I was surprised also at it being in a casual interview instead of CES. Makes me think it's farther out than they are projecting.
This is aggravating, I got mine in nov
Asus refreshes most of their consumer PCs every year. Bold of people to assume that the Ally will be an exception to this.
This is a fair point. I'm not too familiar with their business model so this would make sense.
I've been considering one but I might wait for the updated version. Battery life isn't a concern for me because I plan to only use it while plugged in anyways. I just want to see improvements elsewhere. Mostly optimization and hardware improvements. Maybe even a few more customization options too.
If they are releasing updates as well as they are, it means a better experience on the new device. As long as they don't drop support on the OG for a while, it's a win win.
Why would they keep supporting an older one lol they got u
@@Xraided89 Reputation. It's why Phone companies support their devices a long time. The ones who didn't aren't doing well.
@@Xraided89because its the same damn software and will work on the older model like all their laptops. Its just windows, there is nothing special here. People need to stop treating this like its a Nintendo console. The only sense in not updating it would be so gamers don't get their feelings hurt, and we all know they are some of the biggest babies around. Plus the amd 8840u series cpu is identical to the 7840u series cpu. There will be 0 performance differences between the two models.
@creaturecore13 I get u but they will soon need a bigger reason to buy the next best thing unless there is a big enough pull for the old one still
I agree it's too soon for a 2nd gen but good timing for an upgrade like the old or pro but will have to see I will pop in when you find out and see what your views are
would love to have you back by as we get closer to it launching!
After see onex player X1 3in1 handheld
I think Asus should try there z13 flow series will be good ROG ally successor.
🤔🤔
As a Rog ally Z1 Extreme owner, Rog ally needs a refresh, but not a upgrade, new battery is a definite, and refinded grip as i do find it sometimes lose grip over time
I don't see the point for Asus to release the Ally within 2024, just one year after having released the Ally. There is no actual benefit in terms of performance, as the latest release of AMD APU chipsets (8840 series) offers marginal improvements from current Z1 Extrene chipset. So, as things stand now, performance will be very similar. Unless Asus decide to sport its handheld with larger display and detachable controllers, which will be ironic.
I agree. The OLED Steam Deck kind of did us a disservice by setting the bar low with a very succesful release of their refresh, so instead of fixing problems Asus will just rebrand the first gen with a few upgrades for sales.
cause to them its same product as a laptop so gets yearly releases.
I think this is real because the main hiccups about the current ally is the SD card issue or else Ally would have sold a lot way more. This refresh is focused on shifting the SD card slot, 7.4 inch display by cutting bezels and probably OLED screen. Dang should have waited.
Will u wait the 8000 chipset or if the 2nd still Z1E?
I think you're right and I wish I would have waited as well. The SD card news hit QUICK after it released, but I had already preordered and was caught up in the hype. oh well, we shall see what comes next!
I have the deck, but I expected linux to be my main pc. yep... I'm gonna get attacked but not gonna happen. So this yeah I'm gonna get the Ally. I'm waiting for thw possibly Ally 2 this year, but if it doesn't come before September, I will just bait the bullet, and the buy the first gen. i will be more then enough
It need definitive 32GB RAM, 16GB RAM is too less in share mode especially with Windows11.
I hate when people complain about the battery.. like When do you ever game on your gaming laptop without being plugged in. Battery technology has just developed very slowly compared to performance in the last 10 years.
Eventually chips will get smaller with more power and less energy consumption. These handhelds can do at 15-45w providing decent gaming. 60fps + with AFMF or fsr3 at 720p-1080p.
That's why it's booming more than the laptop market currently, I feel. You'll get more hours of gaming compared to a gaming laptop over 100watts
I have the GO and the Steam deck and the deck is probably the best at performance per energy consumption
I used these handhelds more off the charger compared to my stationed laptop
Won't be any performance increases that's for sure, AMD's already said the next gen chips will only be a refresh.
I don't think so, if asus will use the next gen chip which will probably use the name Z2 extreme, then it will be 30pct more powerful than z1 extreme. Next generation will use Zen 5 architecture codename 'Strix point' for mobile as opposed to Zen 4 in z1 extreme, built in 3 to 4nm versus 5 to 6nm process. Strix point is said to be release later this year or next year 2025.
@TheTopListHub - That's the CPU side, the GPU won't change. So any gains would almost be minimal at best.
@@ezg8448 that maybe true, zen 5 uses refreshed rdna 3.5 gpu but combined with 30 percent cpu increased performance I think it will still be worth it, I guess. I don't think there is no change at all, it maybe a refresh but there will be sure an increase or improvements in performance if not significant. The next gen discrete graphics cards will use rdna 4 while the next gen apu with igpu uses rdna 3.5, maybe if you already have a device with rdna 3 like rog ally then you should not upgrade but for some these upgrade or refresh as you say is still an upgrade.
OLED and battery size increasewould be great.
I agree! As long as I can sell mine to get the new one, lol
No one should be concerned really as I expect this to be the same performance as this year gen chips are still using the 780M iGPU. If anything I hope they add an OLED screen like you said but actually make it bigger like the Legion Go. That would be an instant buy for me as it was with my Ally at launch.
Btw it's been a little over 7 months since it launched. To have the Ally 2 come out at the end of this year isn't too crazy as computers do that all the time. All the other China based companies are already doing it so why not Asus? That being said I will be passing on my Ally to my daughter so it's not all of a waste for me. I even have an XGM device and will be staying with Asus as long as they keep making great products like they usually do.
Fall 2024 Amd strix point with 880M iGPU
@@tomaspavka2014 I heard bout this but this would be a mid-cycle chop. Kinda similar to the X3D chips.
Battery, bigger screen and 32G ram. That what it takes for me to ditch my original Ally and Legion Go.
Sorry, can i ask you what do you prefer between the ally and the lenovo? I want to take the lenovo so that i can also use that as a tablet (so that i don’t spend 800 for only a console), and cause i think the screen on the ally is too small, but i’m afraid of the lack of vrr; is it notable? Are the games snappy on the lenovo?
@@Zini98lenovo are stable, but yeah its still notable for my eyes
@@Zini98 i prefer the Legion Go, my eyes are not perfect and i don’t wear glasses, so i struggled with the Ally alot, but the legion didn’t have this problem, I also i noticed the Legion is slightly better in performance but noticeable. If you are aiming for one now i would recommend Legion Go, though be warned it is noticeably bigger and aliitle more pricy depend on where you live.
Agreed, I love the hell out of my Ally, my only complaint is battery life, at home I play plugged in, but when I travel I still take my switch because of battery, I wanna be able to play for at least 2.5 hours minimum on battery. Still love my Ally though and look forward to the future with it!
Something tells me this is a model refresh for fixing the sd card issue, and maybe (but not so likely), an OLED display
ASUS or MSI are hardware campany. It's not like Nintendo or Valve whose main activity is sell software.
@@tomaspavka2014 you still can't assume for their outcome, they can do pretty much anything at this point
I think this is less an OLED-style refresh and more... a Switchlite style. In the interview he said it would focus 'more on the handheld experience.' I think that points to an Ally that performs at a bit of a lower wattage with a larger battery, potentially missing the eGPU port.
I don't think this will replace the ROG Ally, more just provide another option for those that want to use it primarily as a handheld. I'm saving up for an Ally now to replace my older gaming PC (11 years, GTX770 and near unusable now), it'll mostly live plugged in docked mode, so the greater power and Windows OS works better for me personally, and what I expect of this next Ally-like product likely won't hit those needs as well.
Personally, I would love to see the next General upgrade with a 4K screen or something that’s in there now and a Dock send to have the Nintendo switches
I have a Steam Deck, gotta say, it’s starting to run long in the tooth. Haven’t got any other PC, so I honestly might buy it if it does come out this year and costs similarly
Thank you for the input, I really want one but not sure if I want to/can wait. I have a lot trips/conventions to go to this year.
Keep us posted man
will do!
I bought a steam deck lcd back in January 2023 as I read the reports that there wouldn’t be a new steam deck for a few years then in November 2023 they released the oled steam deck, ok it’s not the steam deck 2 but of course I would have waited if I knew it existed, so I feel the pain for people who bought an ally to find out that some point this year a newer better one is getting released
No, just an Ally refresh!
I think so too! Chip technology hasn't advanced enough yet.
Yes plz the closer we get to at least RTX 4070 in this thing im all for it
That would be great but good lord the battery would have to improve dramatically.
The ally is a laptop with a controller attached, not a console and a new laptop is released every year. Why this is shocking to people is beyond me.
I will buy it for sure if they upgrade the graphically and cpu power
Why don't Nintendo switch oled like slimmest body design hand held exist with windows 11.
I love Nintendo switch design but hate Nintendo library and physical games .
I am fan of Nintendo joycons not others.
Lenovo legion go joycons is very uncomfortable
Nintendo too weak to use windows 11 games nonetheless windows 11 in general. Its also made for everyone including kids so it cant have a complicated ui like windows
Super excited. I got my z1x last month and have been loving it since. Will upgrade when the 2 comes out
i just bought one
I still dont know if rog ally 2 will worth anything. Problem i have with all these handhelds are basicly small storage. 2230 isnt enough. Basicly thats it... Ayaneo go for 2280, onexplayer go for 2280 while steam, asus, msi and lenovo go for 2230. Ssd cost more while it is slower with less memory... As long as this will be the case, i wont go for any of these. I get that 2280 is bigger... But 30mm vs 80mm isnt such a big fucking difference if we see the size of whole rog ally or lenovo legion go not to be able to fit it inside...
No-one noticed how small steam deck looks in this guy hands ???
lol yeah, it makes reviewing hand held consoles a pain.
You know they're going to keep it the same! But if you just relocate the sd card, then people would not have to use automotive heat shilding tape to protect it and fix the other issues and a 60W hour battery would be good but you know it's not like asus has an engineering department or anything........ oh wait, they do, but there are monkeys scratch that even a monkeys, know not to put the sd next to the mosfits but love your videos, keep it up! I mean, that is why, like every handheld you look at, it is on the bottom, but what do we know. Funny thing my wife's rog laptop has a 90w battery and it is the length of the ally and it weights 6 pounds all together so. Yeah give up that battery.
Yeah, if I was gonna buy one at the time, I I was getting to Z 1
Just subbed big ally fan bro
Welcome to the family my friend!
Pls fix the ssd issue ,only reason i didnt buy the 1st gen ally
the second hand market will be filled with so much in the coming months.
I think so too. Unfortunately the OLED Steam Deck set the bar low for success by doing a refresh that improves a few things, but makes no real strides for aa second-gen. But i do think the handled market will be interesting this year!
I was about getting one tomorrow. Now i am confused , should i buy one or wait.
Tough to say as the projected release for the new Ally is at the end of 2024. There can always be delays, and then it depends on its availability. If you're this close to buying one and like the sound of it, I don't think it's a bad thing because if you don't it would be a full year of gaming you'd miss out on!
@@freakytechreviews good point. I appreciate you reply.
get it now
@@cademccool4948 I will do that. 👍
There'll be like 5 rogs every year. They're laptops.
I just got mine
Idk man. Every phone company makes a new one every year. Asus is spewing out new laptops all the time. I don’t really see an issue
Ya know I did think about this and I should have included my thoughts on it in the video. i agree that an annual refresh is the norm nowadays, but I also think that for ASUS's first steps into a new space that they should show a bit more care for the first round of customers. Releasing details on a refresh a year in advance while they are STILL working out the first gen kinks is a bit premature for my taste.
For all the people saying this refresh is ok. Give me $500 since you all like wasting money.
😂
You can literally make this argument about every popular phone and laptop. They may even be fixing the micro SD card burn issue.
@JamesDude100 So when are you sending me $500?
You're trying to explain to me what greedy computer/ cell phone carriers made normal behavior to the average people.
Video game console manufacturers don't do this type of practice. If that's the case, just buy a PC you have more use for it.
I never understand why people just accept greedy behavior instead of standing up for what's right. A Gpu manufacturer makes a hand held and sells it for over $700 dollars just to make a new one a year later for an even higher price? Make it make sense.
@@Liquidsunn87 go around fixing people's broken sim cards from the Rog ally before worrying about the $500. If there's an issue with a product, obviously fixing the issue is important
It's really because a handheld console is shown as a much more portable alternative to that of a gaming laptop, but doesn't allow you to be off the leash for long. And it doesn't help that the OLED Steam Deck is around with a larger battery and less consumption requirements.
If this announcement makes you feel forgotten, you know nothing about pc gaming. The software will work on both systems just like asus' software works on all their laptops. And the ally did not get too hot, the sd card was designed in a bad place right by the vrms and is why it got too hot. These cpus can run into the 90s and the ally is way below that.
Not new to pc gaming, but remember this is a fairly new market of gaming, and ASUS's first real try at handheld gaming. If they want to grow their consumer-base for handheld gaming then they must focus on ways to take care of the first round of customers, and not treat them like the normal pc gaming space.
And the Ally's absolutely did get too hot. There were many reports covering temperatures exceeding 90 degrees so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
@@freakytechreviews unless you are cranking the tdp with outside software you should not be seeing temps in the 90s on the ally. Even at 30w its in the 80s. Please post video showing the tdp constantly up in the 90s. The cpu is designed to not even throttle until 95c. The only "heating" issue was the SD card reader, and that was only because the SD card was placed on top of the VRMs and it shouldn't have been. The VRMs can sustain those temps fine, just the SD card reader can not.
Like it or not this is not a console and will get yearly updates like every other laptop. And you aren't the only person this bothers, but its reality in the PC space. It doesn't mean you buy every model year, but its there for people who either didn't buy the previous year or do want to upgrade that often.
Isn’t the ROG Ally 2 just called the MSI Claw?
No MSI Claw is from another company
@@CloroxBleachIsReal thanks for your response but I was just being sarcastic since they copied everything.
Probably like on Nov or Dec for the ally 2 release. 😂.
This is why companies cant win - TT/YT just complain about everything
Of course! If it were a perfect world then what would I make videos on?! Jokes aside, the main point I feel is that ASUS shouldn't so casually mention moving on from a system that frustrated a lot of people and is still getting fixed, by informing about the new one that's a year away. I'd like to see continued support on the first gen, which I feel would show compassion for their customer base who might then upgrade.
32gig ram
Steam deck did the same shit... just because they didn't call it a "steam deck 2"..
So soon lol
There is no 2nd gen ally coming out this year
500 units sold within the first 2 months, 90% returned or trashed. They didn't fix diddly squat, the lies and deception!
I think i will buy this instead of gpd win 4 i have the 3 and i dont like it very much hopefully asus rog ally 2 will have better performance
so soon.., i won't buy it until , some other chips that is Great on Battery Life , still waiting for a Battery that can run up to 8 hours to play a Triple A games on the handheld , I rather wait for Steam Deck 2 , i'm good with my Legion Go, and my old steam deck for now
thanks for this, i just canceled my order for rog ally. ill just stick to steam deck oled.
i hope its runs gta 6 in 2026
Oh we will have 7th gen Ally's before GTA 6 ever gets here.
Yeah, they should up it to an 8 inch screen and come out with a dock functionality set up
