Thanks for your video. I appreciate that you were honest about what you care about. That makes a huge difference with this comparison. I have never said, “I don’t want / need all that” regarding features or power. If a person really wants to lock themselves into retro or last gen then the Steamdeck has less downsides.
If however, you are a tinkerer who likes options. If you appreciate that Windows will let you do almost anything that an OS can give you. If you perk up when you hear dockable desktop, then you need the ROG Ally. I have mine running through an Annapro dock with a 1080p 24” touch Dell monitor. Keyboard, mouse, network cable into a Gig Switch. I do my bills with my Ally. I watched you on TH-cam and I shop online. I typed this comment in Word because I use Microsoft 365. I also use MS Gamepass and I stream my Playstation 5 to it too, but the Remote Play app requires I use their controller, its plugged in my dock. This is versatility you don’t dream of with Linux. Lastly in a couple years, when all these current handhelds are old news, I will buy a used e-gpu for a fraction of what they are now. Then my Ally will play what’s current in 2026 when docked. Very few reviewers have expressed my stance on this device, its lonely here. Hopefully somebody that gets what I’m saying reads this.

to each their own! i guess it is easy to get caught up in what is best, what can play more, what is the best optimized etc etc that it is easy to forget that the point is to get what works for you.
I'm more of the latter. a tinkerer by nature. while Arief(this video presenter) is more of the first category. like yourself he also uses his Deck to stream his PlayStation, play indie games and just a well rounded contained experience - and i love that for him!

As someone probably said before, for me the Steam Deck OLED feels like a good middle ground. With a gaming laptop, the OLED has made experiencing games on the go amazing. Miles Morales has been a lot of fun and replaying Hi-Fi Rush is amazing as well.

It seems you can now play Genshin on the Steam Deck and not worry about getting your account banned. Not officially supported through Steam but it's possible to install it several ways and not that difficult. I've been playing it on the deck for a couple weeks now, with no issues. I have had a Steam Deck for almost a year now. I love it but I am interested in getting a windows handheld if the price is right.

Something you never mentioned that is a huge upside is being able to use the AMD adrenaline software on the Ally.

I see you're well informed :), in my opinion: the ally is a great device and probably better than the first launched Steam Deck, but the Steam Deck OLED has got a lot of updates, especially when we're talking about the OLED screen and battery life, at the end the SD OLED is probably better than the ally and all other handhelds, considered their main matter is being a handheld, it's because, in my opinion, the Steam Deck OLED is the most well balanced handheld pc and thought out device that is available right now.

@@thepirateswirled Exactly. Valve knows and understands the necessary balance of a handheld. They deliberately didn't put 1080p or 120/144hz. They didn't just slap in a mobile CPU. They have their own custom made one and the power efficiency of it is superior to any other handheld's power efficiency. Rivaling Nintendo
Erry other PC handheld ever just boasted super high specs and got REALLY hot. Only to last like an hour. And the next PC handheld just tries to 1-up the other. The ROG Ally and LeGo are literally no difference from erry other PC handheld ever. They're just popular/known bcuz of the fad and the handheld market that Valve blew up

I've been running linux on my ROG Ally thanks to Nobara steam deck edition. Its identical to the steam deck and everything including sleep works.
I really fail to see whats so great about steamOS. Not all games work, performance is less than Windows, other launchers are a pain to get working, Linux desktop is worse than windows, battery life is the same, Linux uses way more vram which cancels out the ram savings and more. Dont get me wrong, windows is a pain to get setup initially, but once it is its easier than steamOS. Armoury crate gets the job done, you can use steam big picture mode which is like steamOS or things like playnite. We now have emudeck as well. If the deck had decent windows support and drivers then more would use it on there as well. I agree, if all your games are on steam and work on linux then the deck is a good choice. But most PC gamers have games on various launchers and just want things to work. Obviously I'm only talking software as you already mentioned the hardware differences.
Valve are also bringing SteamOS to the ally this year as they said to PC gamer. So when that happens the ally will have the choice of steamOS and a fully working Windows without dealing with bad drivers and open source inferior software the deck has to use on Windows. Kinda funny that a windows device will give you better freedom. The only clear win the deck has is battery and it's impressive under low tdp.

  • @thepirateswirled
    @thepirateswirled 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

In my opinion: > The Asus ROG Ally is a great device and probably the better choice when it comes to the first launched Steam Deck, but the Steam Deck "OLED" has got updated, especially when we're talking about OLED screen and battery life, which is often underestimated, while there is more that many people don't know, the chip shrink for example, a bigger battery, a better and bigger fan and a lot of other improvements.
At the end, I think the SD OLED is probably the better overall handheld than all the competition currently, considered that their main usage is being a handheld, but I also have to say that it also depends on each person's use cases and preferences, there is no such thing like a "everyones" device, that is never going to exist as I would think of.
It's because, in my opinion: The Steam Deck OLED is the most well balanced and thought out handheld pc device at this time, it may not be the strongest or sharpest, but for example: We don't really need 1080p, 4k or 144 hz in a handheld or 30 Watts.
It will most likely reduce battery life, by so much that the improvement in visual quality is probably not going to be worth it, the trade off that comes necessarily with it, time that you can spend without being plugged in by a lot, which is the core aspect of a handheld, in most cases it will be a relatively small screen. Using a lower res on a > high resolution screen won't really fix it as the screen is going to still consume the same power, and valve probably know that, another aspect is, if we're plugged in most of the time, maybe a gaming laptop could be the better choice to some.
Whether you can speak of subjective or objective is up to you at this part, but after a lot of research, most people seem to find to have prefered the "800p" OLED screen over the 1080p screen that can be found in the Asus, futhermore; The SD OLED is also cheaper by a lot compared to the competition, by about 100-300, depending on where you live and comparing to the same size (512GB).
I should also mention that at 15 Watts, the Steam Deck OLED will offer at least the same performance as the other handhelds and sometimes even more (1-3 fps at 15 Watts, example: Search for "Steam Deck OLED vs ASUS ROG Ally - Which is Best in 2024?"), which can be found in some reviews, it will last way longer on its battery at 15 watt usage at the same time. The ROG Ally has still its benefits, it's also good that there is competition.
I can understand why other people love and prefer it over the Steam Deck, but to me the Steam Deck OLED is the best choice that makes use of being a true handheld as in portability right now, one shouldn't forget, that the Steam Deck OLED has got updated, while the Asus ROG ally is still in its first gen by that company. We should also think about this, which can be found more often lately, that it's also kinda like a repeat of the game boy versus neo Geo pocket war, and the game boy survived because portability mattered the most for the people at that time.

      @theamethystslime5978 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

FINALLY. Someone with critical thinking skills!
That's what people don't get. Handhelds have batteries. If they can't last longer than 45m-90m, WTF is the point? They're just trash handhelds that can't even do what they're meant to do
Unfortunately, people don't buy these handhelds for portable gaming, they buy it for the fad and for budget PC gaming. They've never heard of Mini PCs. They're in the wrong market, buying handhelds for the wrong reasons. These handhelds can't handle these demanding AAA games, and the normies buying the Ally don't know anything BUT whatever the latest trendy AAA game is. People view Handhelds in the same light as gaming Desktops/Laptops. They have severely misplaced expectations
The reality is: Handhelds will NEVER be on par with gaming laptops, and especially not gaming Desktops. Not even Mini PCs with the same price!
      ---
      1. Power efficiency is what makes a handheld superior, not better/fancier specs
Steam Deck/OLED set the standard. The only thing Ally and LeGo have brought to the table, was 'muh power' and specs that they cannot handle. They do errything else the SD/OLED does, but worse and less efficiently
All they've done is try to 1-up each other, but they just get more extreme and laughable bcuz they clearly have NO idea what they're doing lol. As if having HIGHER res and HIGHER refresh rate will make it a better HANDHELD/PORTABLE device. It's one thing if the batteries can handle it, but battery tech isn't that impressive. And if it is, it's expensive AF and/or to big
      ---
      2. Anything above '1280p' is just pure greed. A device that's biting off more than it can chew. Handhelds are portable-first. They have standards, they have batteries. That's what makes them handhelds, portable devices
1080p draws more power, taking away from BOTH performance and power efficiency, rendering the handheld LESS capable as a portable gaming device
It's not about personal preferences or boasting higher/fancier specs, it's about performance and power efficiency. 720p will ALWAYS be the minimum and maximum standard for handhelds. Even if we had good batteries that can handle 720p for up to 12h minimum in any game, I'd rather take higher refresh rate over higher resolution anyways
Handhelds need a balance between power and battery. You cannot neglect one in favor of the other. The battery will ALWAYS be the bottleneck of a handheld. Higher resolution will always take away from performance, battery/playtime, and in game graphical quality/settings. It's just a pointless trade off. Especially for 7" displays
Just bcuz a handheld can handle up to 4k, doesn't mean it should. Just bcuz a handheld can handle games up to 144fps, doesn't mean it should. Y'know? What isn't going into performance, goes into battery
      ---
      3. Steam Deck/OLED's power efficiency puts erry other PC handheld to shame
The ROG Ally and LeGo CANNOT handle the same games with the same settings as Steam Deck/OLED at 15W or less. That alone just gives you an idea of how well designed and under-appreciated the Steam Deck/OLED is. Power Efficiency will always be superior
      ---
      4. Steam Deck made Linux gaming possible. That's a MASSIVE achievement. It'll only get better from here on
What has the Ally/LeGo achieved? The same goal that erry other PC in existence goes for: muh power

It's the same argument, the only argument available. 'Muh power'. AAA games
1.None of these handhelds can handle them. If you're looking for AAA gaming, you're better off buying a Mini PC for $700 and getting so much more out of it. You'll be tethered to the wall anyways, might as well get superior performance for the same price
      2. You can still install mods on Linux. TBH, it's not that different from Windows. Just different files in different names in different locations
      3. ROG Ally can't handle AAA games. Even if you're doing 1080p, you're never gonna touch 120, let alone 60. Higher resolution comes at the cost of performance, power efficiency, and higher ingame graphical settings. Not a worthwhile trade off. Even if it still can, the battery can't. As a handheld, it can't handle these games. It's too much for the Ally in some way or another, rendering it less capable as a handheld/portable device
FSR3 is a godscend for Handhelds tho. Regardless, still better off on lower resolutions with battery powered gaming devices
4.Also, Starfield runs better than 15fps at 800pon the Deck. And with FSR3, it remains over 30fps in erry area now. But playing AAA games on handhelds is retarded
      5. Elden Ring can technically play at maximum settings on the Steam Deck, but lowering unimportant settings like AA and Shadows will make it mostly remain over 30fps and ultimately stabalize it
      6. It's not like the Ally is touching 60fps, let alone 120fps, at 1080p, especially not higher than lowest settings. Not without FSR3. And even if it can, you're looking at like 30m-45m of playtime. Not much of a handheld. Just a subpar Mini PC people buy only for the fad

Gamepass is nice, but owning the games is better
Windows is a bad OS, especially 11. If you're gonna use Windows for gaming, I'd highly recommend LTSC. A de-bloated Windows. Windows is known for how bloated it is
If you're looking for a new handheld, the main selling point of a handheld is typically the portability aspect. In this case, it's Battery/Power efficiency with performance (Deck/OLED) vs just even more performance at the cost of errything else (Ally)
If you want to play games for longer than 45m-90m, go for the Steam Deck/OLED. If you just want to play AAA games, buy a Mini PC for $700 and get more out of it. You'll be tethered to the wall anyways
