Yeah but they have all the worlds except for Halloween town, monstro, never land, the end of the world and others. It makes no sense for the game to have destiny islands since Donald and goofy found Sora in traverse town?
@Blaze Redraw same goes with 358/2 Days although 358/2 Days are better story wise I had to admit harshly that gameplay wise Re:coded is the winner cause you pretty much can do anything to modify Data-Sora or adjusting the game difficulties and even adjusting the reward system plus it is one of those that when a world got replayed you got greeted with new things entirely and don't forget to mention the exploration system
re:coded had awesome gameplay but awful story; 358/2 days had awful gameplay and awesome story. Pretty ironic how they complemented each other on the DS
AntDude, you got the start a bit backwards, the order is, Mysterious message, turning the journal into digital codes to figure out, bugs appearing, Data-Sora being made to debug those from the inside
so... I personally didn't mind Re:coded like... at all. it was technically one of the most impressive ds games (moon withheld) that I've played. The gameplay was fast and fluid. the variety was plenty. all in all I enjoyed it. more than 358/2 even
The gameplay was some of the best in the series for instance the rpg part in hercules is so crazily fleshed out most people dont realise you can come back after main story for more boss fights etc
Well, one crucial thing that was missed in this, and I don't blame you, was Maleficent discussing the Book of Prophecies, delved much more in Kingdom Hearts Unchained X/Union Cross. And if the secret episode of the original Chi is anything to go by, she may well have succeeded and may once again be relevant to the franchise. Which is kind of shocking after some of these games where she's second fiddle to Xehanort.
Same with 358/2 Days, but not to me. I honestly wish that Square would release a proper remaster of the game and Re:Coded as well on PS4. Even if they're DLC and we'd have to pay for them, I wouldn't mind having to pay an additional $15-$20 dollars to convert the movies into full-fledged games, but that's just me. Not too sure about anyone else, though. I honestly feel like a proper way to truly experience a story is to experience the journey by playing the game the movies are based on. You know what they say: "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey."
@Blaze Redraw ^This. Also, being able to test out the new melded commands instead of being forced to commit to melding them in order to test out the result is so much better. Also, everything kinda gets OP and viable by the endgame, instead of only having 2-4 viable commands and everything else being worthless. Essentially, balance.
Personally, Re:Coded is one of my favorite KH games. Mostly because it was the second one I played, but the gameplay isn't that bad for me, and I liked the different worlds, except for Castle Oblivion. There were some things I didn't like, but they didn't really hinder gameplay for me.
He's started doing this retrospective series like, a year ago. Plus deciding what parts to include and what not to to summarize most important parts of huge stories is tiring, I assume.
What is with Square Enix and trying to make every little Kingdom Hearts game on every device seem important. Just let them be their own game, and make the story simple.
I feel like Square has just been trying to capitalize on KH franchise without having to go all out into making a full fleshed out sequel. Going between all the handhelds testing which platform brings back the most in terms of profit.
+RiceCrustyTreat FFXV is the reason why it took them forever to just announce KH3. I'm glad they decided to actually make games for these last ten years while Square's A team kept dicking around with XV's development hell. They easily couldn't make any KH games and let the series be forgotten, but Nomura saw it as an opportunity to flesh out the story more. And as previously mentioned, BBS and DDD are fully fleshed sequels (DDD literally leads into KH3). It doesn't absolutely NEED a "3" in the title to be important.
Re:coded was actually my first KH game, interestingly enough. I was pretty confused with all the nods to previous games, in particular in the opening, so i ended up going back and playing all the previous games in order to understand the story leading up to Re:coded, since the gameplay in Re:coded was more than enough to intrigue me.
Gotta love how Tetsuya Nomura made this game SUUUPER RELEVANT to Kingdom Hearts 3... He was like, “Oh you don’t like this? Guess I’ll make it super important now.”
Now, I've only watched the movie versions of 358/2 Days and Re:Coded, but I found Days to be way more entertaining. I also liked that Days filled some holes of the KH2 storyline, which was also rather neat. Re:Coded on the other hand was just another retelling of KH1 with the basically serving only one purpose: Setting up the events of the next game, coinciding with the end of KH2, since Re:Coded explains why Sora was invited by King Mickey at the end of KH2. It was so boring and confusing, that I never want to revisit Re:Coded again, while I honestly wouldn't mind spending another afternoon watching Days again.
KH BBS is my favorite in the series. I felt it had the best (and least confusing) story. It was really brilliant in taking advantage of everything the PSP had to offer and tripling the gameplay time by having three characters visit the same worlds (which also saves memory space). It was also the first KH game that I actually took the time to learn the upgrading system and research how to get new abilities. (Who else walked in circles with the left stick taped and earned endless XP just by walking?) I even liked the KH version of "Mario Party meets Monopoly". I also really loved the worlds. You got to explore the original Disney Princess worlds plus the actual Neverland (not just the ship). However my favorite world would have to be Deep Space from Lilo and Stitch. It also brings up many important questions on interstellar travel in KH. But above all else you have to admit this...Old Master Xehenort is BEST Xehenort. Best voice. Best design. Best plan. Best showing off of godly powers (that Keyblade Graveyard). Best monologue. And (spoiler alert) he actually WINS in the end! After fighting so many versions of the character, it was refreshing to finally fight the original. And as you know, it's hard to top the original.
Between 2 and BBS, I can't choose which one I like better, but yeah, I REALLY like BBS. Love the characters, and especially how each has a different playstyle.

I mean, what's more interesting: searching for combinations of commands to find new ones, or petting some weird creature for more than an hour collectively? Add to that that DDD was TOO big (in terms of rooms). Re:Coded is better, and don't feel ashamed believing/saying that.
Recoded has a multiplayer feature that allows for a 100 floor gauntlet, that's randomized by combinations given to you by other players. What's nice is that if you have 2 DSs, and have another DS game that has local wireless play, you can actually explore all of this content quickly. Just by having a game look for wireless play while in recoded using tag mode, a bubble with a randomly generated character will appear. I love how one of the ones I got was a character named "VegiKnight" that has the bio: Not "Radish"? Seriously?" And is wearing the FF3 Onion Knight set. There are also other Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy characters you can see from this.
Lots of people regularly shit on any of the three incarnations of _coded._ But, in that game's defense... it's a game that let players embark on a single-player campaign with Sora, with classic Kingdom Hearts combat, platforming elements, and of course, Traverse Town and Castle Oblivion in polygonal form. *All of these, when combined, are a first on Nintendo consoles.* Not bad for consoles that are used to get the mere breadcrumbs of what the Kingdom Hearts series has to offer (the one with the cool new Disney worlds, Birth By Sleep? Why, it's a PS exclusive, of course). Betcha forgot about this one detail, right?
Which I, even as a Nintendo fan, would be _super fine with,_ if only it didn't mean being at home on a _home_ Sony system. I'd love the first two HD remixes being ported to the Vita, but nope, not happening. Hopefully the Switch will inspire other console manifacturers to create hybrid systems as well, given the potential of it all. A Halo game on the go? What about Kingdom Hearts II on the go?
SuperWorldJumper it depends. I don't see why not having those relased on a Nintendo system. I mean, people got those games remaked anyway on Sony's systems later on so I don't see the harm here.
Slobertooth 13 There's a few important plot details though. Namely a specific conversation with the bad guy (About the Book of Prophecy) and the secret ending also the regular ending
Heartless fang I plan on watching the 358/2 days movie regardless, because it does have some important plot points. I was just on the fence about Re coded because it barely does anything for the plot.
Re coded is actually pretty important to the kh storyline it may not seem like it now but if you play khux app they mention how they are all data and few heartless (you will see them WAY later in the game/storyline) that they a similar to the heartless like the red/black box color look. It connects it in a way and helps you have a better understanding of khux in the end so don’t say it’s completely useless I also think was good for like a recap of the game back then (since it toke awhile to make each game) before they came out with the story so far.
"The story is very obviously thrown together for the sake of making a game, which I think is a little bit better than throwing together a game for the sake of having a story." THANK YOU. I much prefer Re:Coded over 358/2 for this reason. Personally, I don't like Kingdom Heart, in the sense that I don't really like the main series (well, at least, the first one, since I hate the Starfox~ish gameplay that is forced upon you between each world, and since I never finished the first one because of that, i never played the second one), but I love the "spin-off". My favorite Kingdom Heart would be Dream Drop Distance, followed by Re:Coded. I guess I'm a little bit biased because I never really had other console aside from the Nintendo consoles until I got my PS3 3 years ago, but I did play the first one recently, and still can't overcome my hate for the Gummi Ship stages.
Well, I'm a big fan of the command deck, so if this game incorporates it, it's enough to make it worth in terms of gameplay. However, like he said, there's no point in playing it or watch the movie, so... I don't know. I think the story matters more for an RPG, so I would say 358/2 Days (which is pronounced ''three five eight days over two'' by the way) at least gives you a purpose to watch it; I mean, the music is great and the cutscenes are so touching, and so, it adds a deeper background to Roxas and Axel, which are important in more important games like KH2. Anyways, BBS is coming next and it was a crucial point in the franchise: some people think this is when everything started going downwards, but others, like myself, think that it served the franchise well by expanding its universe and adding new content.
This game me cry, I have a soft spot for character sacrifice stories and "virtual" characters finding out they are not real, and boy dot sora sacrifice made me cry
the problem is coded was actually released before 358/2 and bbs but recoded released after and while it doesnt change the story from being more of a sora is like the biggest good guy you can get in the universe and him finding out about the days and birth by sleep trio for mickey. it is a still a fun game and i like sora cheering up every version of riku.
As a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, I just started playing this game for the first time and had been really enjoying it for the most part! What I really hate thought is that you basically have to play through the SAME worlds three times in one game on top of the other two times I’ve been to them in other games…
The game is semi important though, it explains how Maleficent managed to get into Disney Castle in DDD, it explains, why Hayner asked Sora in KH2 if they've every met because the data version of Hayner was friends with Sora. So at first it doesn't seem important, but every game in the series has a reason, except V Cast 😅
I had it on DS about 10 years before I touched any of the other games making it my first. From what I *can* remember I did love what they did with the worlds with it being my fave take on Wonderland. That tech/customization system will be missed along side the closed off "trial"(?) arenas with the boxes
Re: Coded's only redeeming value is that it's a poor-man's Birth By Sleep, since they came out around the same time. If you didn't have a PSP, that was your way to get a taste of the deck command system before 3D:DDD.
I would agree that Re:Coded plays better, but I still consider it a watered down BBS. And while I consider Days to be the second worst game gameplay-wise (CoM is my least favorite gameplay), I really love the story and characters, especially some scenes that got cut from the HD "remaster". I still consider Re:Coded the worst in the franchise and consider it one of 2 bad KH games, CoM being second.
Great video, Ant! I'm glad to see that you share my opinion in thinking Re:Coded isn't complete garbage, though I'll admit I'm kind of iffy with the video length, but I won't be too ungrateful.
Re:coded is almost the opposite of Chain of Memories. The plot of Coded is pointless, but the gameplay shines through, allowing the player to build Sora the way we want. CoM has a good if not great story. Yet the card system is painful for new players and has little customization unless you are doing a challenge run. You'll be using the cards that are the most useful, ones that heal you, ones that create combos to do massive damage, some damaging magic and that is basically it. You don't get a ton of options, which may seem difficult but good, but it alienates those who want to play it for it's story. If you can't use strategy well (I can't) than you can't really beat it easily without luck. Re:coded is a fair game, not good, not bad. If you want a game where you can make your character into something unique, then you can. If you want to play a game with a great story, then look somewhere else. I'd give it a 70/100, a bit better than average, but not great.
i can agree in many points BUT what I don't agree on is the reused worlds. the reason they are reused is because they digitized the journal from KH1 that Namine made blank during CoM. they went in to fix errors that were made when she tried to fix it when she was piecing Sora's memories together. since the journal was of their KH1 journey then of course it'll consist of those worlds in KH1. i didn't think it to be that hard to figure out and understand. i mean sure was it necessary to fix the journal, probably not but in doing this they were able to figure out what to do for their next move aka DDD.
HEY! I just noticed you have that Ball Mario toy from a 2006 McDonald's set! I have the whole set, Mario's starin' at me right now :-D Well, staring to his right, anyway
Also, I have also played all Kingdom Hearts games (except Kingdom Hearts 2 FM, the best of the bunch, damnit). I legitimately think that gameplay-wise, Re:Coded is the best portable KH game. ESPECIALLY in terms of both customizability and balance.
I wouldn't recommend doing Birth By Sleep 0.2 (the new one in the 2.8 collection) along with the original Birth By Sleep as 0.2 contains stuff from Dream Drop Distance. With that in mind, I would put 0.2 at the end of the Dream Drop Distance video or as its own seperate mini-video.
This is the first kingdom hearts game I have ever played and completed, including Roxas. I was also a dumb player because I never melded commands and I never switched keyblades
the reason everything defaults to KH1 is because virtual Sora and all are in the first Jiminey Journal, which is KH1's story.
That's true!!
Yeah but they have all the worlds except for Halloween town, monstro, never land, the end of the world and others. It makes no sense for the game to have destiny islands since Donald and goofy found Sora in traverse town?

Slobertooth 13 There's a few important plot details though. Namely a specific conversation with the bad guy (About the Book of Prophecy) and the secret ending also the regular ending
Slobertooth 13 Basically just watch the movie(at the very last half)
Heartless fang I plan on watching the 358/2 days movie regardless, because it does have some important plot points. I was just on the fence about Re coded because it barely does anything for the plot.
"Worse from the Francise, olympus coliseum and castle oblivian" - perfect
I always thought I was the only one to think that Re: Coded was the better of the two. Cannot wait for your next episode, AntDude!
Anthony, bruh. Birth By Sleep is by far the best hand-held Kingdom Hearts, and for me personally, my absolute favorite.
5:38: Greatest cameo ever...wonder what Disney worlds Woomies would fit in?
Honestly, Re:coded was my first KH game I finished and I didn’t mind the story, and it’s for me a great game
"The story is very obviously thrown together for the sake of making a game, which I think is a little bit better than throwing together a game for the sake of having a story."
THANK YOU.
My favorite funny moment of being 10 years old and finding out Numora was drunk when he came up with this game
I beat this game when I was a lot younger. I only had cure in my command deck, and the Lady Luck was the only keyblade I used for the heals.
Nice review, but I like 358/2 Days and Re:Coded both fine. Days was even one of my favorites for a while. :p
VGMusic Explorers 358 Days /2 was trash imho, Recoded was an amazing game though
Next up, the rest of the Kirby marathon. IT'S TIME!!!
I was so happy to see another of your kingdom hearts videos. :D
Re:coded was my first kingdom hearts game it did a good impression. I haven't played a kingdom hearts game since
After watching all of Key and Union Cross, Recoded actually has a lot of connections to the lore it seems
I love how he bitches about it being cannon when it basically set up the motivation for maleficent and Pete in 3.
the problem is coded was actually released before 358/2 and bbs but recoded released after and while it doesnt change the story from being more of a sora is like the biggest good guy you can get in the universe and him finding out about the days and birth by sleep trio for mickey. it is a still a fun game and i like sora cheering up every version of riku.
Re:coded was the game that introduce me to the series'
As a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, I just started playing this game for the first time and had been really enjoying it for the most part! What I really hate thought is that you basically have to play through the SAME worlds three times in one game on top of the other two times I’ve been to them in other games…
this was my first KH game :) good thing i read the wikis of the other games beforehand
ohh i can't wait for bbs retrospective
5 months and still waiting.
And then Nomura gives the middle finger to everyone who says Re:Coded is completely pointless judging by the more recent trailers
I really love it, that for 5 KH games he needed 1 year and exactly after this Video, he makes 5 Kirby Videos in 2 Months. XD
@blazeredraw But the lore tho
the story has the importance of maleficent learning about the book of prophecies and the last 10 minutes
FINALLYYYY!!!!! Thanks for making this vid!
The concepts this game introduced get really fleshed out in the future.
Re:Coded is the first kingdom hearts game u ever played and I fully enjoyed it.
I still consider Re:Coded the worst in the franchise and consider it one of 2 bad KH games, CoM being second.
you'd appreciate Days's gameplay more if you were able to play it in multiplayer.
Great video, Ant! I'm glad to see that you share my opinion in thinking Re:Coded isn't complete garbage, though I'll admit I'm kind of iffy with the video length, but I won't be too ungrateful.
I liked this game more than 358. the abilities were so fun to use and the areas made the game super challenging
I’d say 6/10 is a fairer score
@@raxcisneros4675 Maybe, yeah. But I also liked Re:coded, so I am a bit biased.
4:13 WHEN DOES HE START BLEEDING FROM HIS EYES AND KILLING EVERYONE
Birth By Sleep is in my opinion, my favorite and the best in the KH franchise.
i can agree in many points BUT what I don't agree on is the reused worlds. the reason they are reused is because they digitized the journal from KH1 that Namine made blank during CoM. they went in to fix errors that were made when she tried to fix it when she was piecing Sora's memories together. since the journal was of their KH1 journey then of course it'll consist of those worlds in KH1. i didn't think it to be that hard to figure out and understand. i mean sure was it necessary to fix the journal, probably not but in doing this they were able to figure out what to do for their next move aka DDD.
Legend says if you post early, AntDude will emerge from the ashes with a soft.... "hey"
Honestly the stat matrix is my favorite level up system in the kh franchise.
HEY! I just noticed you have that Ball Mario toy from a 2006 McDonald's set! I have the whole set, Mario's starin' at me right now :-D
Well, staring to his right, anyway
This game is the reason that I got into the Kingdom Hearts franchise
Birth By sleep is the best non-numbered KH game followed by Dream Drop Distance, KH Re Coded, then 358/2 days then Chain of Memories.
But 358/2 days has numbers.
As a person who us mainly a Nintendo gamer, I had 3 option for KH and I got Dream Drop Distance. I regret nothing.
I mean, have you played the other 2?
Can't really talk unless you tried yourself, man.
@@aldebaran2643 I've played all the other KH games except for Re: Coded and 358 Days Over 2
@@danielvaughn1947 That still doesn't change the fact that you can't just compare one thing to others without sampling both.
Also, I have also played all Kingdom Hearts games (except Kingdom Hearts 2 FM, the best of the bunch, damnit).
I legitimately think that gameplay-wise, Re:Coded is the best portable KH game. ESPECIALLY in terms of both customizability and balance.
@@aldebaran2643 And that's your opinion and I can respect that.
I love re: coded, it is my favorite game in the whole series, besides the numbered titles (1, 2, and 3)
4:18- sora.exe... sounds like some creepypasta material right here.
Hey, you totally forgot to bring up the whole thing with Sora's Heartless going out of control.
The only thing I want to see is Antdude trying that one salty icecream
I forgot that he was covering this game, thought he was going to DDD lol.
Man, we're still waiting.
This is the first kingdom hearts game I have ever played and completed, including Roxas. I was also a dumb player because I never melded commands and I never switched keyblades
Thanks for a new episode. I know Birth By Sleep is gonna be tough, but you can do it. Keep your strength up!
