  • #Lefthead #lifter #p0302 This is a diagnosis of a 2013 Chrysler town and country with the 3.6 v6 engine exhibiting a p0302 cylinder 2 misfire at idle . I did not feel a misfire but the misfire code would set quickly after clearing codes . Looking at the monitor the misfire counts were counting up quickly under 1500 rpm cold/hot . Pulled out the trusted 4425a Picoscope using the current clamp to test starter current draw to isolate low compression cylinders . Also I use the Picoscope wps500x pressure transducer kit . There are TSB and such so follow service info but always verify cause . There was a warranty extension for this issue for most 2011 to 2013 left cylinder heads on vehicles equipped with the 3.6 pentastar but those are now expiring . Lifter failure is what I found on this one . Always seek a professional as needed .

The old squishy lifter. We see that from time to time. Sometimes you can feel the squish. I have never gone as far as swapping rockers and lifters but you have proven it 100%

Good catch and lots of great information this show you how the scope and other checks like relative compression test so important to check modern cars those days thanks for sharing.

Scopes are no walk in the park but baby steps can make things easier .

Nice! I had one a few weeks back with the same symptoms , also had uneven compression humps. I told him I had to remove valve cover to verify if its rocker arm or lifter, but customer declined further diagnosis

On this vehicle it was just a single tappet replace . Not that this is normal on this engine . Very unlikely to see it again .

Good info but the average person is not going to want to pay thousands to have the mechanic do this kind of deep diagnosis

AGREE . This testing was more of a way to prove point of failure on the lifter . This would have gotten a ton of parts including a head and this can be avoided with an in cylinder psi transducer.

@@ocdauto8794 I work with quite a few "techs" that would have blasted the parts cannon. I have seen one in particular replace the head, rockers lifters and cams with nothing more than a dtc for diagnosis

You don't need a lot of tools for the relative compression test. Inexpensive USB oscilloscope or even a computer sound card may be used for it.

It could be this or it could be sand and dirt in your fuel lines- check out this video I made on this if you have a misfire related check engine light. th-cam.com/video/wx3tY0CDbjc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ltVASqLL3L5LymyM
