Operation Ivy- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 5/28/89 Multicam w/Sony D6 Audio

- I have been wanting to put all of these sources together for a long time, and thanks to @copperpot5 we finally got it done! This is the final, most comprehensive document of the show. Here is what we did:
Took my shaky, handheld angle from the sound booth and brightened/deshake'd it
Added a 2nd angle that I received in trade back in 2009 and edited that in to make this a multicam for the 1st 40min or so
Used a different audio source- Sony D6 recording with Sony ECM909 mic (xfer from master tape, recorded by "anonymous"), which was then GREATLY enhanced by @copperpot65. I can't believe how good it sounds!
so, while it isn't perfect due to dark/grainy etc source footage, this is as good as it's gonna get. Enjoy! - เพลง

Aw shoot, I wish one of these days made it on the list

This band created so many f'n classic songs in such a tiny window of existence. 30 years later and I still get goofy when I pop on an Op Ivy album.
you mean *the* op ivy album (;
@@BiggestPrimusFan Studio Album-wise, maybe. But "Energy" doesn't have all of their songs. They had E.P.'s as well. Me, personally, I typically just listen to their self-titled compilation that has pretty much everything of theirs.
This
Operation Ivy were a supernova. The exploded, burned bright then died. Its impossible to say how influential Op Ivy were to the Punk/Hardcore scene of the late 80s-90s. They were just absolutely amazing. Legends.
Matt Freeman is the shit. Best punk bassist to ever exist. It's awesome to be able to see this old school Op Ivy live.
dude was seriously holding it down
truth
what is he doing now?
@@ToneSoCooL3 founded Rancid w the guitarist
@@catchilupi thanks, this group boggles my mind, if not for skate videos, I don't think we even would have known about them. I wonder if they ever did a reunion show. I lived in the Bay Area ten years and never saw anything.
"The Crowd" is such a stupidly powerful song. There's 100 ways to interpret it and each way feels so relatable it's unreal. Underrated song, underrated band.
I never got into that song...
Wow, well said
I was at this show as a 16 year old, thank you so much for posting this. Greatest band of the era in my opinion.
in Australia never found this band till i was 14 in 94, Id pay a ridiculous amount of money to have been at this final show , now at 40 years old this band words are still a massive part of my personality and views of the world today.
Did u see billie joe in the crowd?
That's awesome! Looks like a great night
Wow you were lucky man
I found this album (energy) when I was 11-12 years old and still to this day almost 20 years later I still get enormous amounts of energy listening to it. One of the greatest bands EVER. The most energetic band I’ve heard by far
Arguably the greatest american punk band ever. Hip-hop, reggae, punk, hardcore, grind, pop...pretty good
Don't forget Op Ivy also wrote songs in the styles of ska and rock steady as well! Ska then rock steady then reggae in terms of invention 😘
you forgot about SKA
Thank you for your effort in restoring this. Most of us never got the opportunity to see them.
Long live Operation Ivy
Ann Wilkiemeyer well, didn’t really last that long did it.
Ganos Thenie But it did tho, we are all still fans and the music lives with us forever.
Wow.
Great restoration job. I've seen other versions, this gave me goosebumps...
I was at this show. I flew up from SoCal and to this day, it's my favorite show ever.
I don't know if Jesse, Tim, Matt or Dave will ever see this, but I just want to say that I really appreciate your art and it's meant a lot to me for a really long time. I know it's easy to sit here in my position and say that Op Ivy should play again, and I completely understand and respect that that isn't what you guys want to do. But I will say that if you ever have a change of heart, I think it would bring a lot of happiness and positivity to a world that sorely needs it.
The best sound to ever come out of Punk Rock.
Uploader deserves a medal for this
These guys were the bedrock for my adolescence and helped to shape the person I am today. Unity, as one stand together!
Thank God someone recorded this so my 25 year old ass could watch this in 2020 during quarantine
25 too, big OPIV fan! Quarantine number 2 Here we go again
HAHA I'm 25 too. I feel you, man.
34 and here for it.
Hey fans, TH-cam Not the new HStreet Video. Great skating and Op Ivy was damn near the entire soundtrack.
Operation ivy are legends, their sounds made it to my ears 30+ years later and beyond that
This was Green Day’s first show and Operation Ivy’s last official show. Fuckin legendary shit!!!! Shout out to whoever restored this I didn’t think I was going to find live footage of the band this good.
They didn’t record Green Day’s performance or at least it’s not on this video. I just it was a fun fact to throw in about the night this show happened. First and last show of 2 of the most influential punk bands.
This wasn't Green Day's first show though
I pretty sure it’s their 1st show as Green Day, they played shows before as Sweet Children
This guitar tone is a treasure, like the band hell yess
BEST SOUND QUALITY OF ANY LIVE IVY SET!
without a doubt, op ivy is the best ska punk band I've ever listened to. Thank you H-street for the introduction. Still listening at 47 years of age. Cheers!
Yeah this is not the new h-street video. Op Ivy & Sub Society
When your favorite band is finally live.. . 20 years later.! OP Ivy!
Man, this is blowing my mind right now. I used to have a rough, and I mean ROUGH sbd cassette of this show. Not only did I not realize that no less than 2 video sources exist, but that a master audience source of the audio could sound this much better than the sbd! Incredible restoration efforts here, I know many others are saying the same thing but I really gotta thank you for the effort involved in putting this all together. Brought me right back to eighth grade and how that s/t album used to make me feel back then. Much appreciation!
Every single time I’ve ever watched live Operation Ivy set they have an instrument failure. It’s funny that it would be during Sound System, the one thing you can depend on…
man i was 12 when this happened and 3000 miles away but loved op ivy bc of skate videos. wish i could have been there
This restoration is a fucking treat. So used to making do with sucky ancient footage. Profuse thanks mate! 🙏
Every song a banger
Love these guys!
This is the best Op Ivy video I've seen, great job.
Not only did this band give us such a great catalogue of songs all of which are pretty much A side level material.
But just about every band I listen to only exists because they heard Op Ivy and were inspired to start a band 👊🏻
Thanks for restoring this!
This is absolute gold. Thank you for sharing!
This is AMAZING! Thanks for all of your work!!
This is excellent. Thank you for putting this up. Cheers!!
thanks man, this is pure gold
Very happy to see this. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for sharing this ! So good!
Hell yeah! thanks so much for putting this edit together!
Bass, Vocals - Matt Freeman
Jesse Micheals - Vocals
Drums - Dave mello

Unbelievable gig, no ska/punk/hardcore band can ever come close.
Well there is Rancid if you haven't heard..
lol@@189vans
@@189vans basically that one comes after op ivy
This is great, thank you for sharing.
Wow. The energy is incredible... legendary even.
Phenomenal job putting this together. Thank you for posting it!
Thank you so much, sounds great, Matt is so good!!!
Wow you did an awesomel job , thank you so much for taking your time to fix this !!!
When I was 15/16 I played bass and sang in a band, and covering Bombshell is the most fun I ever had. Learning it was hard, but executing it live was awesome.
Greatest band ever.
This is a thing of absolute stunning beauty. THANK YOU!
thank to upload this doc. very good quality moreover .
Many MANY thanks for this. I would have never thought to see an Op Ivy live...
June 2024 and still waiting for their reunion
Awesome footage and sound. Thank you 3C&aM
great live video, these guys were powerhouses
Wow, fascinating. I have heard these countless times with no image to go w it. Thanks!!! Great work.
Great restoration
Thanks for putting so much time into this and sharing. Great lyrics that may be even more relevant today. You gotta respect them, they could’ve been huge, but got out before selling out.
That's pretty amazing! It's a golden era from East Bay Area! Thank you for sharing!
Man, this restoration is great. Watched this show so many times and this is the best version. This LP was my life in middle school (early 2000s). Thanks for the upload
Epic encore and ending. Man this is great. Thanks for sharing
wow a blast from the past for real !so glad i made that show.thank you to the person who donated the airwalk shoe hope you found my british knights shoe it fit perfect.and Brad mcG ( the fuck you guy ) you were a real a** up in the pit.no more vodka for you .overall a great show.thanks julie(remember link 80?) for squeezing me in your car .oh the memories.p.s. I seen me surfing f#@k yeah !!!~>
Thank you for this iconic footage ❤ op ivy is and will always be my favorite band
This is PRICELESS..wouldve given a few toes to be here..I seen a ton of shows there and was there EVERY WEEKEND through the mid 90s and late 90s. I miss that place SOOOOOOOO much...ty for this.
Jesse is such an amazing frointman
God bless TH-cam. Thank you for posting.
Wasn't alive when this band was around God they're so good
I'm so glad I came across this video..good shit
Thanks for this!!!
19:10 Just what I've been looking for... Thanks!
I never was able to see them play because I was in NY when they were together. The quality of this show makes me feel like I was there. AWESOME
They still sound the same. It's 2022 and we still love this!
It's beautiful. What I would say I wouldn't have it any other way
If only I had been born 10 years earlier or so (was born in 79) While I saw countless bands from the early 1992 on when I first started going to shows, would have loved to have been old enough at this time to enjoy things like this.
Thanks for sharing this. I got a cheap bootleg cassette version of this around 22 or 23 years ago and I'm amazed how much better this sounds.
Amazing work.
Same, August 79, just missed these guys. They were still huge and vital listening for anyone into punk when I was in my early and mid teens, and that was all the way on the other side of the country in MA.
Thanks!
I have no idea how he found them but a Japanese friend had the tape back in 93/4. I listened to it every day of the summer, unbelievable record
The second OP IVY upload I’ve seen where Matt had issues with his BASS. I’m glad he was able to get a replacement
Also forgot to say thank you. This is a great show!
going off the all the live recordings i've heard they had equipment issues about 70% of the time they existed as a band
To resist despair, in this world, is what it means, to be free.
Thanxs!!!!!
"Thanks again for the Lookouts for loaning this bass..."
...
"Oh I fucked it up man, so Green Day says it's theirs, I'm sorry."
Seriously, a historic moment in music history.
When was that? Timestamp?
Opening shows (untaped due to saving tape for op ivy)
Crimpshrine
Green Day
(And a possible 3rd band)
Matt Freeman mentions that he thinks the replacement bass someone gave him came from The Lookouts
Yes, It may have been the Lookouts, but they were also regulars at shows, may have just been in the crowd.
There were a million opening bands. Could have been Mr.T Expirience, Raskull, Slambodians..who knows, unless somebody digs out and old flyer.
@@edwardleal2976 the other bands was on a flyer I saw a little bit back, but other people were talking about another set after op ivy.
One that night might've been Surrogate Brains. My bandmate was in it and Im looking for footage from that night! Any help from Gilman street shows from 89 would be great.
The old flyer’s online
They ripped onstage as they did in the studio. Truly an outstanding band and a great legacy.
saw these guys live up at river theater back in 88 or 89.. faith no more, green day and mr bungle played too plus a bunch of other bands.. ska punk heaven
Saludos desde el salvador merliot punk never died!!!!
sony d6 was a great walkman, pretty good recording givin how long ago it was
As someone who's the same age as Rancid, this is amazing.🤘
The DRI hat!! Kelly hilll you should be proud!
wow Tim and Matt are soooooo young.
I saw Dave Mello's band Schlong and 3 Finger Spread play in 1993 and both bands were great!
This is the reason you tube is awesome
Best video on YT
I like how you kept it rolling through the bass breakdown. Time stamp!
This is the only band where I have just about every song memorized
Yo, that is historical archival, this vid needs to be protected
a Barcelona els vam conèixer!! Enormes!!
The quality is fuckin amazing considering
5:45 you can see Tim Armstrong yell into the mic as Jesse leans into it. Interrupted
What a cool time. The Gilman scene seems so separate from the original hardcore guys of the 80s.
Just a bunch of nice kids having the time of their lives.
Having been there, it wasn't always nice. Overall, it was awesome to be part of that scene.
@@RyanSmith-bo4um Please elaborate. Got any bad stories?
@@isetmfriendsofire just dumb drunk teenage BS. I mean it was punk rock, there were fights, occasionally the racist skins would fight the SHARP skins, during the Sick of it All show the bouncers girlfriend got kicked in the head by the guitarist of the fore mentioned band etc etc... Like I said overall it was an awesome scene we didn't stab each other we didn't shoot each other and we most certainly didn't take selfies. I just wanted to be clear that while there were nice kids, it was definitely wasn't Disneyland.
oh man Tim trainwrecked the 2nd verse of yellin in my ear.. matty was on point the whole time..
As always.
Punk rock, brah.
When is matt NOT on point
This is a band that need to do a reunion!
What could've been??? Some of the most classic tunes of the 90s punk scene
Back the f**k up!
This is our last gig LoL
Sound System plays🤘🏼🖤
33:33 - Roadie jumps on stage to sing vocals for Room Without a Window, was part of the band the whole time... first gig was in his garage.
That’s Pat Mello!
Jesse's vocals are the most destructive in punk rock, and they're just as great on Common Rider and Classics of Love. They're high energy, better than GBH and early Replacements.
was my first introduction to green day too!!
