For this reason here in Italy we spin the spaghetti on the bottom of the plate, instead of the spoon. The spoon is used just in certain areas of Italy, and just for “capellini in brodo” which is basically a noodle soup. But when it comes to spaghetti, no spoon and no slurp, cause slurping is considered rude ❤️ yes... it’s almost a sport xD
Yeah, I think a common mistake is to stick the fork right in the middle. I don't really think when I eat spaghetti, but thinking about it now, it's easier to do it around the edges of the plate, I guess.

I always thought it was an invention from somewhere abroad. But based on what you're saying, it may have originated in rural areas of Southern Italy. I wouldn't know as my elders were from the north of the country. Just bear in mind if you're ever in Italy, try not to do it, or don't be surprised if people give you strange looks. :)

That actually got me thinking. I think they say zucchinE (feminine; sing. zucchina) in Central Italy, but here in the north we do say zucchinI (masculine, sing.: zucchino). And that actually means "little squash". Zucca is pumpkin, or (confusingly) any kind of ripe squash. Zucchini/e are the unripe ones. Squash is native to the Old World, while pumpkin was introduced later, from the Americas. It's a relish in northern Italy but not widely appreciated elsewhere in the country, unlike zucchini, which I think are a Itaian favourite more generally.

Just made this, but with penne, and omg. It’s outstanding. I added a few chopped up sage leaves in at the end of cooking the garlic...mmm!
