It should also be noted how Theo distorts both the illusions of love and beauty with reality. When he obsesses over what he thought was the Goldfinch in a package in New York, it turns out to be Boris's civics workbook. And when he thinks Pippa does not love him it turns out she does, but she can see how combining their pain would ruin eachother. Even the quote at beginning of section three sums up most of Theo's struggle to find resolve within himself: "We are so accustomed to disguising ourselves to others, that in the end, we become disguised to ourselves." Although it was dissapointing to see he was still a complete pessimist after he resolved most of his issues, honestly it wasn't much of a catastrophe for him to not go to jail for the painting or the fake furniture or the murder, and to find out Pippa actually does love him, and to not have to marry his cheating fiance. Other than that the book was pretty damn good, and Boris rules.
I never understood why people said Theo was unlikeable but when viewed in the context of how much he got away with and yet he still felt hard done by life, I get it. I think, like Theo, I couldn't get over what i felt was the injustice of the bombing so I couldn't stop viewing him as a victim of a fate he had no control over, which is why I never thought he was unlikeable.
I have a lot of sympathy for Theo. Not only did his mother die in a traumatic bombing, but he'd also grown up with an alcohol father (who later manipulated and abused him in Vegas), was severely bullied alongside Andy in middle school, witnessed Boris being beaten by his dad and as an adult found out his childhood friend had died. So on the whole I'd say its surprising he didn't turn out worse. Not saying he's not an arsehole, he is, but you can hardly blame him.
This analysis is great! The idea of an unsustainable obsession with beauty and aesthetic leading invariably to our own downfall seems to be a common theme in Tartt's work. I would love it if you also did her first novel, The Secret History! Definitely the most entertaining of her novels in my opinion.
It's nice to hear you give such a good analysis highlighting the good things in the book when it isn't in fact a book you love.
It's nice to see people that can share their views on things without letting their own biases get too much in the way of what should be talked about.
Good point 💯
Oh shut it
wow, the fact that you managed to drag Camus into this was awesome :D I appreciate this show so much
Frosty Fiveoh Thanks Frosty
Wisecrack the hidden meaning of the breakfast club the philosophy of Ghost Dog: way of the samurai thug notes on the count of monte cristo
I think the "the absurd does not liberate, it binds" line wasn't to do with the plot so much as a commentary on Theo's relationship to the painting. His love for the painting (the absurd) should be liberating; his life is marked by change and impermanence so to have something solid and unchanging to hold onto should be a source of comfort and joy to him, an escape from his problems (and to an extent, it is). But he's also obsessed with it, to the point where it leaks into every aspect of his life - he's metaphorically bound to it. And his fear of what will happen if it is found means that he's "bound" to it in a more literal sense, too.
this is one of my favorite books.
I'm rewatching all the thug notes videos!
dude! please come back and do more thug notes. HAHAHAHAHA
Can you do The Secret History also by Donna Tartt?
YES
Yes I would like to see that!!!🙏📖🤔
What's amazing is that not only does this man summarize the plot of the novel, but also elegantly captures the essence, language and ambiance of the novel. Bravo, sir.
I did it! After binging the playlist I have watched all 100 episodes of Thug Notes. It took 4 days straight, but it was well worth it.
Great summary and analysis! I thought this book was superb (minus too much time rolling around in Vegas and rolling around in the hotel room).
I wouldn't quote too much from the last hundred or so pages, though. Theo was lost in the tar pits of deep, dark melancholy. I took his opinions at that time, not to be his own, but the current bent outlook in his suicidal mindset, which got contradictory at times.
Yes!!
are you kidding? vegas was my favorite part!
@@NoraODonnell me too! but looking at the story progression as a whole, there was definitely a lot of rolling around in Vegas. it didnt do much for the story as a whole, although i did enjoy reading it
i feel like its maybe important to mention that theo and boris have a liiiitle more than a sick broship
That's right)
please don't stop making these videos. i've learned so much from you guys
An analysis on 'The Kite Runner' would be really interesting.
Right?
***** The Kite Runner is a piece of shit
***** Well that's your opinion. I think it's pretty amazing. Agree to disagree, I guess.
***** What was the point of saying that?
Wisecrack Was a good movie, is it a good book? I'd suggest this.
Thug notes is the best! I remember watching these as a kid just getting hyped to read huge novels like The Goldfinch
Best review of The Goldfinch on TH-cam. Bar none!
the thing about the moon motif is that boris IS the moon - donna tells us that when she makes his muslim name badr al dine (moon of faith). boris is theo's anchor in vegas, and he doesn't last. but neither does his absence. something to consider.
Kinda convenient for an artist to produce a work of art the message of which is that art lasts forever (and thus artists can be immortal)
I love this guy! Great summary of the book and the energy is contagious!
"Its just different strokes for different folks" -Sparky Sweets
I like he way you summarize this book. You made it easier for me to understand and Thank you for that.
I love you guys! This series and this channel in general, just awesome!
Do American Gods.
I've been requesting that book for 2 years
Well now that he's doing more modern stuff, we might have a chance.
I think they should do One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
By: Ken Kesey
AVE Alveo He did
YESSSS
You are the absolute best! You’re a hero reaching kids at their level...man I’m a science teacher and I would love to convey like you....keep it up please such a noble undertaking
I love all the Wisecrack videos, especially Thug Notes. Please do Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, it's my favorite book.
I've officially seen every Thug Notes video. Mad respect for Wisecrack and the knowledge it has shared in an entertaining way.
Mad classy how you stated your opinion on something without taking a dump on those who love it. Stay awesome!!
Please come back Sparky sweets! The world needs you!
You guys should do "Johnny Got His Gun". That'd be unreal
Do one of terry pratchets books
This show is the best thing on TH-cam, at this moment ! Keep it up !
Please review I HAVE NO MOUTH AND I MUST SCREAM by Harlan Ellison.
Steven Perez This would be pretty amazing, to be honest.
Please please PLEASE
man! I just saw your book out of nowhere in a bookstore. Someone just left it on the wrong shelf but glad that person did cause I didn't know you then. Bf picked it up and started laughin. You got some real wits! We like it a lot!
Im litteraly in love with the thug notes concept
My favourite channel on TH-cam atm. keep it up🙆
Zed Flower I know. These reviews are really astute much better than some of the serious ones on TH-cam.
I cannot believe that I haven't stumbled across this wonderful corner of youtube before
Damn you Sparky Sweets! I had to stop the damn video when you said, "Dayum, they killed his mamma?" cause I laughed so hard!
Great analysis. I love how mot only do you give us the story outline, but you delve (quite deeply) into the themes and meanings. Very nice review
Wisecrack The Plague by Albert Camus!
Splurgendii C He hasn't even done the Stranger yet that's top Camus priority!
The plague would be an awesome episode
Jenifer Joseph he did though...
Please please please do The Secret History by Donna Tart. It is my favorite book by her, and I would love to see a video for it.
This book is amazing and this review is amazing
The goldfinch is way newer than the title sounds. I thought it was one of those old ones from 150 years ago or so.
Wow look at u now Wisecrack . Remember joining you way back when you were Thug Notes with less than 50k subs.
Really proud of you mehn.
Just thought you should know you have a fan all the way from Nigeria.
Have a lovely weekend.
No offense but I had no idea you guys had TH-cam.
Lol Xpry don't worry, we are used to ignorance of people like you. 😊
Thank you for sharing the insight of this book. I see alot of people reading this book. So one time, I asked this dude about it...he never told me. If I have any questions about a popular book, I will come to your channel first.
My enjoyment of your comedic rendering of the narrative aside, you also did an excellent job of covering a lot of the real nuggets of insight found throughout the book. Great video!
DO"THE YELLOW WALLPAPER"
I love the Goldfinch....nice take on it
Hey Sparky Sweets, Really love the channel! Ever since I was in High school I have always loved Candide by Voltaire. Could you please do a Thugnotes on Candide? It's not a very long book, and has tons of great material to review. Candide is philosophical and has a classic "Hero's Journey" with status quo of the character returned in the end, but upgraded with new resolve on life.
Such a divisive book for no reason!!!! High art, absurdity, humor, current culture references, and a great Bildungsroman, naw what mean?!?!?
Please Please Please do The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach or The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides or really anything by Eugenides
Great job. I enjoyed your review. The book sounds like a hot mess.
Pre-ordered my copy of ThugNotes! Can't wait for August 18th!
Tyson Huffman Me neither!
Wisecrack Any chance you guys can make a thug notes audiobook?
cn012891pat It's happening!
This was AMAZING. Honestly I enjoyed it more than the book! XD
Thank you, cause I was never gonna read this book😂😂😂
Love your interpretation of books. I'm a fan of the Georgian and Victorian era so I would love some thug notes about more Austen, the third Bronte sister and some mrs Gaskell! Love for these ladies!
Please come back. We miss you!
I personally recommend this be enough for anyone considering reading the book or watching the movie. This was far more enjoyable and took far less time.
I've been of two, or three, minds about The Goldfinch...it's not Tartt's best work, never mind that Pulitzer...but this is the best "review" i've seen......Props, and Peace Out...
I think 'All the Light We Cannot See' by Anthony Doerr is due for an episode. 2015 Pulitzer winner.
One of the best vids to date.
Please do The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
Got a few ideas right quick:
- "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd
- Anything by Rick Riordan, JK Rowling, or Jeffrey Eugenides
- "Matched" by Allie Condie
- "The Scarlett Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne
- "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck
Jordan Pennington He already did The Scarlett letter.
Yo playa, I love your analytical work on both modern and classic books. I was wondering if for a future episode of Thug Notes if you would analyze the book Fight Club?
You wana try doin any of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" series by Douglas Adams?
I just found my favorite TH-cam channel 😄
i just loved your analysis.Great
I’m not gonna lie... this is my new favorite book, but I understand the criticisms and I enjoy how you criticize it without being harsh... everyone just has different reading taste. This was a well done video, though!
Any chance of analysis for David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas?
TheAyeAye12 Oh I'm sure that's on the franz lihst
Thanks bro. Now I dont need to watch the movie anymore
I really enjoyed this book despite some of its flaws - the Boris stuff for one... It's like a modern Dickens novel.
I don't think that Oliver and Roger banged
Do The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. It won the Tony for best play and the book is awesome.
YES. This. Very short but excellent book.
How about The Little Prince or The Importance of Being Earnest? :D
I'd really like to see an episode about The Moth Diaries. There's a lot there to break down and analyze.
Sometimes, loving beautiful things can be a real shit show.
Word.
Please do Don Quixote
Awesome! Love the analysis and great work! Can you do Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo?
Do The Secret History by Donna Tart. Definitely her best work.
You should do a ThugNotes on Antigone by Sophocles!
It finally makes it to the big screen.
I would love to see you do "Life Of Pi", "Watership Down", or "A Wrinkle In Time". Thug Notes is the best!
I did not enjoy this book at all. Could have been 700 pages shorter... But I loved your thoughts. Best part was when you brought up Gone Girl which is one of my favorite books! HAHA So I guess reading The Goldfinch lead to something alright after all :D
This review was so refreshing after seeing a bunch of pretentious haters shit talking it.
Won't you analyse The Little Friend also by Donna Tartt?
I'd like to see what happens when you tackle Finnegan's Wake. It'd be interesting to see an analysis attempted of one of these infamously difficult to read books. It probably doesn't have to be something as grammatically deranged as Finnegan's Wake, but something along the lines of Gravity's Rainbow or Ulysses would make for an interesting experiment.
Can we get a preview of the Thug Notes book please??
Beautiful review of a beautiful book. New fan.
Are you gonna do a thug notes on the thug notes book
I'm seeing a bunch of people requesting a kite runner review, and I'd like to add one more request to the bunch
Please do the Kite Runner
Analyze "The Golden Compass" by Philip Pullman.
Please come back

You should do House of Leaves!
Also since Fantasy is apparently not off limits, I would love to see The Name of the Wind.
Dear Dr, Sweets,Thank you for finishing this novel and providing such a comprehensive, incisive analysis. I could not finish the book; I just lost interest. I did read "The Secret History," and thought it was brilliant although very creepy and disturbing. I was in a Ph.D. program in English and I wish I had a professor like you. Thanks for finishing all of these books and explaining them! I love your show. Where did you get your degree? How can you be so brilliant and have such great biceps, too? Sincerely,Ms. Sendroy, MA
Could you please do the Outsiders next!!
How do you feel about Infinite Jest?
I'd live it if you did Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier! It's one of my favourite books.
Wisecrack Eh yo, Sparky. Where'd you find those photos for the characters you used in this episode?
You gonna do The Bell Jar?
What do you think about a summary and analysis of Ender's Game? I really want to hear what Dr. Sweets has to say about it!!
