    This is my favorite story by Shakespeare, because it had my favorite line: "My Lord, what fools these mortals be."

      Nah. Best line is from King Lear: “As flies to wanton boys are we to the Gods. They kill us for their sport.”

    I like Midsummer Night's Dream. One aspect of it that a lot of people overlook is that people in the middle ages feared fairies. They were amoral bastards. But even though Shakespeare defanged them quite a bit, hints of it are still there. Oberon basically mindrapes Titania into fucking a donkey so he can steal her adopted son from her. For a normal human person that would be life-ruiningly traumatic, but at the end, she just sort of smirked and shrugged it off and they walked off together. The impression I got is that this horrific thing he did was just him scoring a point in a centuries old competition, and she was likely thinking "Good one, O. I'll get you next round." Not human thinking.

    We're all quite familiar with the summaries of Shakespeare's stories, so I have good reason to want to read some of his books. They sound amazing. However, I tried reading his stories but I couldn't follow them because of his writing style. And I'm ashamed of that because I know it makes me sound uncultured. Any advice?

    • @PatchworkGirlofOZ
      @PatchworkGirlofOZ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Tekrothebountyhunter Easy. Don't read them, watch them. Shakespeare wrote plays and plays are meant to be seen and heard. Since you'd still be getting used to the dialect, I'd also suggest starting off with something that's not too complicated, like Julius Caesar or Romeo & Juliet. I know many who'd disagree with me, but I think the 90s film with DiCaprio isn't a bad place to start (despite a lot of...liberties..) since the dialogue is mostly intact, just in a modern setting.
      That said I'd suggest finding a play production over film (the BBC makes good ones, for example) but either one works.

      @S2Cents 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They have Shakespeare books with his own writing and a translation into contemporary English. Trips him out Shakespeare is classified as Modern English, not Middle English.. language evolves..

      Joss Whedon did an amazing job on Much Ado About Nothing. With original dialogue, but a modern setting (Joss' house actually). I'm not one for the Shakespearian writing style, but when I watched the movie it just. . . Clicked in my head. I highly recommend it.

    Everyone says this is a happy ending, and perhaps for most it is. However, it is not a happy ending for Helena and Demetrius. Yes they get together, but Demetrius never loved Helena and Helena will spend her days with a man who only loves her because of a spell. Does she really love Demetrius if she is willing to force him to love her against his will? I think not. If love must be forced it is a farce.

    What I think happened with Demetruis, Helena, and Hermia is while Demetrius' Helena's families had the rank, Hermia's had the money. It explains why Demetrius would go through Egeus despite Hermia and explains why Hermia is SO touchy about "low and little."

    Four things. Demetrius had been courting Helena before he got engaged to Hermia. Titania had taken in the Indian boy on her own, Oberon just wanted the kid for a servant. Oberon was the one that put the whammy on Demetrius after Puck screwed up with Lysander. Oberon got the Indian boy away from Titania while she was still under the spell (there may be a fight over that after the end of the play as he was the orphaned son of one of Titania's favorite servants) and they removed said spell before restoring Bottom.
