$59,000 Racer/Cruiser sailboat for sale needs a little TLC | EP 60|

  • We crossed the bridge to Cape Cod and found this 1982 Gulfstar 44 sailboat for sale for $59,900. It's a neat layout, not unlike the Pearson 385 sailboat tour we took a while back. She's been on the hard for the past 7 years so she could use a good helping of TLC to bring her back up to the race-winning condition she was in before being hauled out.

Considerable interior TLC has been a;;lied to refinish the areas of epoxy finish delamination so interior is now ready to use, New pics available. Recent survey available and price reduced to $55,900 or make offers. Add a coat of bottom paint and be ready to launch in the Spring. Free storage till then !

There are a few comments I can make as the owner of the Gulf Star. It was produced in the 1980s after Gulfstar woke up and started building bots with higher quality. The sails are by North and maintained by the Salem MA loft. Included are two 152% Genoas, and the Mainsail with two full length battens at the top, plus two more and three reefs, and equipped with Dutchman flaking system, These sails were constructed with cloth two weights heavier than normal to assure long life. These sails provide top sailing performance including winning the Venona prize for the Round the Vineyard race, fastest corrected time in all classes plus many other New England PHRF races! Also the original sails and a 120% heavy air sail a spinnaker and a storm jib that hank on to the removable inner head stay come with the boat. The engine room fire suppression system is Dry Chemical not Halon. There is always some flexibility in the price. The boat has been stored where it is from 1992 on and is placed there each year it was used by using a Brownell type trailer. The last time it was placed there after being used in sailing condition for the summer, the cost was about $600 to strike the mast and haul the boat to its current location with similar charge to put her in the water and step the mast in the spring, not a huge expense. All of the exterior teak has been varnished since new and the interior teak was covered with epoxy in 1994, and can use some tough up. I can be contacted with questions at kern50440@gmail.com, and will call anyone interested in purchasing the boat who provides their phone number in their email. Fred

Great boat and as a young couple looking to do the work , this could be a great choice. Thanks again Captain Q and Randay. Now I have "Old Cape Cod" stuck in my head for the rest of the day lol.

Captain Q thanks for covering the anchoring system, chain and rope rode. So many channels go on about all chain as being the way to go. The chain / rope combo is far superior with modern anchors allowing for built-in shock absorbing. Many also feel that chain is stronger, yet they don't consider all of the parts of their anchoring system and look for the weakest link. I would rather lose an anchor than rip a cleat, winch or sampson post off the fore deck.

So much potential it would just depend how set in stone that price is. I'm sure moving her would not be cheap and for myself she would need some updating. I didn't hear anything about sails or did I miss it. She really is a hidden gem or diamond in the ruff as it were. Thanks guys for showing her to us. Definitely adds another vessel I'll keep in mind for when I can finally get serious about buying my first and at my age last boat...

Bought boat in 1992 and had hurricane Bob damage fixed under galley then had peeled bottom resurfaced with 12 oz biaxial fg and West epoxy and barrier coat so bottom wil NEVER blister !! Still in great shape ! Siegel bolts snapped off in 2013 so had Kingman Marine design and install better skew design at a coat of over $20,000 ! Great improvement for offshore durability. Boat has cost on modified 23” diameter Gori propeller delivering 10 nmpg/gallon at around 5.5 knot low cruising speed. Also had new SS fuel tank made and installing in 1992. Boat has heavier than recommended North High performance sails. PHRF race wins include Buzzards Bay regatta wins, Round the Bay wins, Hurricane Cup wins and placing first of all classes in the Round the Island Race getting the Venona prize around Martha’s Vineyard. Also won race between Province town and Tennants Harbor ME and several Whalers races from NBYC around Block Island and back, some single handed!
Most of interior teak finished with Clear West Epoxy, and solid wood doors also so coated and finished with West varnish.
We did not open side ports to keep the seals from leaking, so knobs are currently stuck so I suggest not trying to open them except the galley to cockpit one. We primarily used the forward and aft thatched which capture lots of breeze. The main and one of 2 152 percent genoas are in the main cabin. The seats there slide out to give 2 double berths. The folding table mounts to the mast which is not installed so table not in position but near where it goes
Lots of cabinets around the boat and in galley, but no little cabinets behind main salon seats or over forward bunks
Radar display mounts to bracket over sinks so can be seen from chart table, or raised through the hatch and then seen from the cockpit.
A large dodges goes back to the pedestal grab rail so steering in rain does not require foul weather gear. Dodger makes an extra “room” for inclement weather. Also small dodger and a Bimini also go with the boat.
Other improvements include modification of propane locker to enlarge it to take 2, 20 pound tanks, fairing out aft end of keel adding over a foot of length, installing a removable inner head stay and turnbuckle for attaching smaller and storm jobs with hanks, replacing inadequate turning block top plates with thicker ones and modifying lower spreader mast tangs after one failed while sailing.
Boat also has 285 watt solar panel and refrigerator unit added to 12 cubic foot top loading ice box which minimizes loss of cold air Re side opening boxes.
Call for additional information. I’ll have a nice large picture of boat in the water to take a shot of for the video. Boat has winter cover frame mounted with side boards untied from lifelines on starboard side to facilitate going forward to see inner head stay turnbuckle, SS chain
and 45 pound CQR anchor. Boarding ladder with epoxy and FG covered teak steps now on cabin top Dorade boxes also coated with epoxy and UV resistant varnish. All exterior teak has been varnished since boat was new !
Hope this gives you useful inputs

If we were ready or at least in better position to buy right now, this boat would definitely be a real contender for us. The price is out of our range but it’s a beautiful boat that has obviously been very well cared for & loved. Good luck on selling her. I will keep my eye on her. I respectfully don't agree - all things considered (unsold for a LONG time, in an awkward place to get it out - certainly can't do a thorough survey or sea trial, generally pretty run down, history of significant hull and rudder damage, don't know about the sails, only one pair of cockpit winches, etc, etc.) I honestly think that if he gets $20K for it, he'll be lucky.

    • @bendaves77
      @bendaves77 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@neilquigley1030 did you bother to read the owners comments above before making your ridiculous statement? He said it would cost about 600 to have hauled and mast stepped. Sails are in great shape and condition. Has a survey done recently and has done some more maintenance on it.

I always appreciated the design of Gulfstar boats, but the quality is another matter. It is nice to see one without massive water stains under all of the windows. I believe the owner took exceptional care of that one. Nice job of finding another good example of a Gulfstar and as always an excellent overview.

Varnish: At the time of application if moisture gets into the polyurethane/varnish it creates a little cloud in the finish. So... it may have been very moist (high humidity) at time of application of the polyurethane/varnish.

We do not know much about sailing. We get a lot of comments from our viewers that we do not know what we are getting ourselves into etc, and that is true.. But at the same time we are new to all of this, so we do not really know if we will succeed in going on with our story. Right now we are looking for at a Hunter 42 Passage. If the boat is in a good state, could you consider this boat being a blue water boat? Love Dirk & Maraya

Capt, first wanna say we love your channel and have watched 98% of your videos! But… we have to say something here… we are the recent purchasers of a 1981 Gulfstar 44cc (only a few #s off this presented boat) and wife and I might be a little Salty that you rated the boat so low. Granted… asking price is CONSIDERABLY higher on this than what we paid for ours and it is undergoing a major refit. Which only makes It seem worse with the low rating… That being said even ours surveyed fair market value of 60k! I’m glad we got our hands on one of these relatively unknown and under appreciated boats! Some have compared to Hylas 44’s! and some have considered top choice by cruising world… Fast, stable and built solidly! Def should have rated mid 20’s! (But we’re now biased) ;).

I like that galley setup on the girl, do the stuffing box go bad or any other components from sitting on the hard so long?

I would like to suggest the name of, "Salty" for the puppy. She will obviously be spending most of her days at sea.

yea! the new EP just arrived...timing's perfect, by far the best way to enjoy lunch!...Sea Dog's thinking oh no what is THIS !? ,btw a little caution (our Shadow was a puppy once) so, (~:59) if you think Sea Pup's hopeful look is for her own safety gear (like Sea Dog's) in case of K-9OB, she is not, she's a wild, unruly, rambunctious puppy, it's something to tear around the boat with and shred... so I'd wait on that!! hmmm, how about Sea Q (army def)?

I like the boat layout floor plan, but I don't think their is enough room on the aft deck for me to mount my traversable Water Balloon Ballista or Catapult, for those occasional sailby's when I am feeling like hoisting the Jolly Rogers.
