    Are Gulfstar sailboats the worst boat ever made?

    Just to correct the timeline a bit: Gulfstar did make dodgy boats before 1975, but Vince Lazzara went on a "high quality" bender after that, rapidly improving his designs, construction, and materials. All the boats after 1976 used lead for ballast, real teak for furniture, better hardware, and Hood Stoway masts were often standard equipment. By 1977, when their flagship Gulfstar 50s were first being produced, they had seriously improved their lineup. By the early 1980's, Gulfstar was probably one of the highest quality mass-produced boats that a sailor could buy and their Gulfstaar 60s were magnificent. Boats built from 1978 to 1985 can still be great cruisers if previous owners took care of them. One major problem for Gulfstars built after 1979 - bottom blisters due to the oil embargo and changing resins. Luckily, most Gulfstars have already had barrier coats to remedy the problem but if you are looking at buying one, pay extra attention to the blister problem.

      I just purchased a 1976 37ft center console. Leaks around hatches. Any suggestions?

    • @Morrisfactor
      @Morrisfactor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@twrayl2002 Terry, I'm not sure if you mean the deck hatches are leaking around the seals (or Lexan) or are you talking about the cockpit hatches? Nearly all boats periodically (every decade or so) require the deck hardware/hatches/portlights/etc to be removed, the old sealant scrapped off, and re-sealed with Boat Life or Butyl tape. It is a big job, but not usually difficult. Perhaps that is what you need?

      What would be your opinion regarding a 79 gulfstar 37 aft cockpit? Thanks...

    • @Morrisfactor
      @Morrisfactor 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The quality of build would be there - good bones - but so much depends on the care and upgrading given by previous owners that it would have to be a case-by-case basis as to whether the boat is worth buying. As with any boat of that vintage, examine carefully for soft decks (rotted balsa core). I always liked the Gulfstar Sailmaster 39 which was made between 1981 and 1984 (57 boat production run). It is a more modern design and highly sought after and I think you would find it a better choice. @@Whit-mh9nt

    I have an 81 Gulfstar Sailmaster 39. I live aboard in Australia. Yes she crossed the Pacific.
    She is a surprising fast and capable yacht. Balsa cored deck. I love my boat and the livability of this old girl.
    I have done many upgrades including rewiring for 240 volt electrical shore power.
    I single hand most of the time and she is such a beautiful well balanced boat to sail.

    In the early 80's I was privileged to live in a house in Morehead City that was waterfront. It was on a creek off the ICW, but there was plenty of water for boats of all sizes. My front yard had a dozen boat slips, all of them sailboats. I was active duty Navy stationed at Cherry Point MCAS 20 miles away. Just as a courtesy, I kept track of anyone around , or working around "my boats", During the week I would keep an eye on everything. When a boat looked low in the water, I would pump the bilge (it's amazing how many didn't have automatic bilge pumps). During storms, I was out there checking lines and bilges. I took care of the boats. When the owners would come for the weekend, I would tell them of any problems. They loved my attention. When they would leave they would drop off all kinds of food, from produce to meats! The house was never locked, so if I was not home they would leave it on my kitchen table or put it in the fridge or freezer.
    One of those sailboats that I had to manually bail out constantly was a Gulfstar. It was a beautiful boat, but it leaked!
    Best place I ever lived in my 20 years in the Navy!

    John Kretschmer is his list of Top 10 Great Used Boats to Sail Around the World, the Gulfstar 50 MK II is the biggest boat on that list.
    The MK II was built 1975-1980. Offered in a center cockpit sloop as well as a ketch. Offered in a 2 and 3 cabin layout. These boats are solid, blue-water crusers. The only 2 issues to be aware of is 1) Blisters, if the hull did get and maintain a good barrier coat. Sadly this was common on most sailboats after 1976 due to the resins of that time. 2) The standard engine was a Perkins 7-154 60 horse. As Perkins rated their horse power before the transmission this resulted in the Gulfstar being underpowered. An option at the time was an 85 horse Perkins, much better. The Gulfstar 50 MK II was an outstanding boat at its time and still a great choice for World passage.

    I got a 1977 Gulfstar 37 several months ago and I am beginning a refit as a complete novice to sailing. From what I have seen on other boats from other manufacturers compared to mine the gulfstar is far more solid feeling. All though I think the interior was finished with cheap materials, such as veneered plywood decking for the floor and particle board cabinetry tops, which I am ripping out completely and re doing the entire cabin layout. The hull and deck are very solid. Having received some damage to the deck/hull joint from being bashed against a dock along the starboard side during hurricane IRMA the damage is localized to just the overhang portion of the deck. I have seen far more severe damage to boats in far less intense storms. There are more than just a handful of pre 1980 still afloat and in outstanding condition, at least in my area. It seems as though this video was made with far less enthusiasm as many of the other video you have made, however I do continue to appreciate the amount of great content and information you put into all of the videos. Keep up the great work.

    I am finding very little info on my Irwin 45cc ketch project. I can't find the same model anywhere online, and it seems like several things are very different that the other similar size models. Like the lask of a compression post under the mizzen, which is an area prone to rot due to the unsealed cable holes thru the deck. It was the failure of this area that led to me getting the boat at a cheap price, as instead of boom truck services, i built a simple truss to jack up the mizzen for full repairs under, Anyway, Great Video as usual!! We acquired a '73 Gulfstar 41 center cockpit over the summer and have been quite happy with it. We just completed a three day race (cruiser class) on it prepared for the worst/hoping for the best and had no problems whatsoever even heavy blow, even got 2nd place cruiser class one day. We're basically cannibalizing our old Morgan 41 out island to update this Gulfstar which has definitely held up better than the 70's era Morgan. Also just met a new guy on our pier with a '74 GS. He and his lady are prepping to head out to the Bahamas on it so they seem pretty happy with it as well. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have and curious to hear if you end up buying the GS you went to see. Good luck

      I just crewed a delivery in Central America on a G36 center cockpit. I 192% agree with you. The thing got tossed around in 4 foot swells like a rag doll. Points for sh*t. Planes terribly, refuses to sit down in the water
      Does maybe 4.5 knots on a beam reach. So much interior room wasted w the layout, especially the engine room. Ventilation for sh*t. A terrible transoms design for a sailboat. And the steering linkage, omg. The couple who own it, love it for the fishing aspect. They trialed no other sailboats before buying that one, and are completely closed-minded about anything else. Those are the ppl who buy these things, ppl who have never been on other sailboats. It's not a monohull sailing vessel -- it's a trawlerhull. Probably great for the ICW. Absolutely horrible for any open water. I had more stability on a 40' catamaran in 12' whitecaps than the G36 had in 4' swells. This is the one boat that I'll never sail on again. I'd trust a J22 or a M25 in open water before I took out a Gulfstar again.

Just took the boat out and tried to make it do all sorts of things that it wasn't designed to do. And, surprisingly, they simply believe that "boats" have a hard time with XYZ. Not their boat. If at all floating even from 80-90’s these Gulfstars, at the best, could serve as a modest marina queen. As sailboats they were still junk with the worse hardware one can think of. A real cruising sailboat need at least 20-30 years of outstanding pedigree with the same reputable builder to be called a sailboat to consider. Important for dreamers that hope to have a world old cruiser for $30K just to realize few months later their dream is way further out and their bank account is (at least) $50K down… Just a reality check for all. Regardless, I do like watching these quick episodes between my offshore voyages, and refitting projects.

    The good, the bad, and the ugly. No backing plates was downright messed up, and the lack of seals on the end of the sandwich.... He was lucky not to be sued into oblivion before he got things right.

      @@markbuskens6070 dude, I remember hearing people talking about these on the west coast back in the 80's. Proven or not, the stories of their shoddy construction were known.

      @@markbuskens6070 no, rewatch it. Sometime in the 80's, dude got serious and made good boats, but never could shake the bad rep (well deserved) that he got from his early ones. Think of it like computers, ASRock, well known for shoddy construction, fried my 4770K seven years ago, and they kept sending obvious line QA repaired boards that had equally shoddy VRM issues, while lying constantly saying they weren't QA pulled/hand-repaired boards, even when presented with photographs (solder blobs on the board and even on the ferrite of the VRM inductors, and failure to deflux after assembly, seriously crookedly mounted parts that are normally machine placed) and returned boards, a nightmare that cost me almost a thousand dollars and lasted a full year because they sold me a board that claimed it could do things it couldn't (like handle a non-overclocked 4770K). Over the next few years, they started getting good reviews, although the reviewers all noted flimsy parts that felt like they could break off, but still fairly reliable in operation. Now (today) they are back at the same shoddy construction, false advertising, and lies they had before. Companies like that keep their bad reputation, hell, I'll never buy their shoddy crap ever again.

      I own one and I live on her. For $6000??? What layout - galley on the port or starboard side? I would buy her! I paid $35,000 for mine, and most of the boat is original and either in great or acceptable shape.
