Truly well worth a Q Rating of 30 on this one!!! Such a wonderful boat and such a wonderful but bittersweet story about the last owners. A perfect boat! I wouldn't be the least bit apprehensive about long distance sailing in her like Sam Holmes, Christian Williams, or Sven Yrvind. Thank you Captain Q and Ran-Day!
Nice to see Stars and Stripes still viable in her retirement. I was fortunate in St Martin to crew on the Tru North. We raced Stars and Stripes and lost to her, great episode, what a beautiful boat, thanks
Well you did it again captain Q....if I lived in America I would now own 62 boats....I think you could sell me a chocolate fireguard...fantastic episode as usual from you and randy...
Well I would John I would do but at the moment I am having an extension on my private harbour....because when captain q reaches 100 episodes I can fill my lot. Anything after that is yours free of charge....
My thoughts are with this poor woman who lost her husband, much too soon. Life is short and passes quickly. I hope the boat sells quickly and the owner is sustained by the memories she made with her husband.
A 36 ft ketch, presenting better than almost every other boat that you'd go to view, doesn't need much done and at no significant cost, depending on the sails. With a new engine and instruments! An absolute tribute to her owner. If I was looking for a coastal sailor and one that I could potentially sail much farther. This boat is a no brainer. After almost fifty years, to measure so little moisture in the hull and deck is astonishing. I bet, in the right hands, she'd last for another fifty years. Here's hoping. Thanks gentlemen. An awesome find.
Wow .. never seen the rub rail…. I have learned so much from this channel… and I keep finding out I need to learn so much more!!… thank you gentlemen!!!
Want to just say... Thank you. Not sure when I'm going to pull the triger, but want to let you know, it's this show that gives me the desire to do so. Would like to see,,, cruise-ability (how you think that a trip across the Caribbean or not) would be, be part of your grading system! Also, if it is a good or bad live-aboard!!! Yeah I know that everyone's idea of when someone can live on it is personal, but if one can stay in a 30ft RV, for a month, it should be a good comparison!!! Thanks again
from my experience on living aboard on boats I would do it again as a child we lived on 3 boats with a family of 6 and a dog. The last boat it was just my parents and me on a 46 Trawler for 4 years the other 2 boats were 1975 35 Rasmuss lived on this one for almost a year and a 1969 40 foot Newporter for 4 years. My wife and I last year bought a 1987 O'Day 272 we both love it. My wife never sailed before and she enjoys going out on it. The joy of being back on the water and the happiness I get hearing the wind against the sails and moving without a running engine can't be beaten.
Greetings from the Netherlands! Yes, the Dutch do make the best blue water boats (next to the Fins and Swedes) and she is yet another lovely classic - you really find the gems! Please do send us clogs an orange hat - it’s good for keeping the rain off our faces while sailing ⛵️ 🤣
I know this is about a year old, but if I had been aware of this vessel when the Captain Q first posted this video, I would have, without a doubt tried to purchased this!!
Thanks again for a most informative and interesting review. along with a bit of the human interest aspects of the vessel. We really appreciate the wonderful "straight-ahead" jazz in the background -- fondly known "bebop." Very classy production!
Captain Q: Conijn is pronounced Konine! Also the tiling around the galley is called "Delftware" and comes from the old Dutch city of Delft which is a beautiful place to visit.
I'd have to agree with a 30 for that boat. It's a good, solid and affordable boat for the granola crowd. There's not too many of the Contest line in North America that I can see but it sure is a beautiful boat.
Very capable boat. Most have the deeper draft keel, like I have for 30 years. The sloop version sails even better. Spars are also dutch. On my ketsch the mizzen-staysail/gennekar is the secret weapon. The ketsch version sails better upwind than any longkeeler. Also in stronger winds.
@@YachtHunters I enjoy Sam a lot! Thanks so much for showing this beautiful boat. Love the romantic take of the end of voyage and since that event is nearing for me , I look forward to passing over the bar. Nice. Good, always, to end with a beginning...
Proper pocket cruiser. If I was in the US I would seriously consider buying this. She could be brought up to prime condition with very little effort and not much cost. I'll bet you wouldn't need to spend more than $5k on her to be ready to cross the Atlantic. It's mainly cleaning and cosmetic. Get the hull sanded and repainted and she's ready. I'm not keen on deck stepped masts for blue water cruising but if the rigging is sound, I could live with it. Little gem.
I think the stepped mast is popular in Europe because of all the canals. I would only be interested in a stepped mast on a boat that can be trailered and this boat is a bit too large for that.
It was my pleasure to meet you last Saturday in Annapolis. Leeboards!!! I didn't see any or even leecloths on any of the new boats at the boat show. Anyway. this boat excites me. I really like ketch rigs.
Hi Gentlemen, I do like your channel and watch many of your episodes. In this episode the captain mentioned the thinking of boat design during the period of the making of this sailboat which got me thinking an episode or two dedicated to how boat design has changed might make for interesting viewing. I do appreciate the captain’s introduction to the boat’s history on each episode but a general summary might be very enlightening. One of the things I have found since looking into sailboats is the opinions of sailors on keels which seems to be a controversial topic so I am not sure if you would want to get dragged into that though . Maybe some other channels have done this but I haven’t found it. Thanks and keep up the great content.

I never see you review the condition of the sails on any of the boats. Any particular reason for this? Considering the expense of replacing a set of sails, i would think it's a major concern when purchasing a used boat.
We really don’t have the time or energy or knowledge to give an adequate appraisal of the sails. We feel that odd part of the survey and preliminary due diligence a potential buyer. A sailmaker in his loft would be a start , better yet hoisting them in the water and the best examine during sea trial Our assumption is that they are not perfect and so long as they were not a home for mice or caught in a barn fire their us probably some utility left in them. How much is needed will be in the mind of the buyer Hope rid helps .
good idea... we've mentioned it in a few past episodes but will talk a little more about why and how we love them so much. they aren't really providing much power... more of a gentle, balancing force which makes them easy to handle. We often anchor with the full mizzen up (and mizzen sheet in tight) to stabilize the boat during the night.... if that gives you a reference point as to the forces at play
Nice. Could have given another 10 points for gorgeous wood. I don't sail. But before my wife passed her Doctors told me I need to find a hobby. It's 2 years on August 8th. Maybe I should take up ⛵. Find myself again.
That's a very nice boat. Here is a story about Stars and Stripes you might enjoy. I was at our steel fabrication shop in Pearlington, MS. while some very large bulkheads we'd built were being loaded into a hopper barge to go to a river control project in W. Virginia. At one point the boss gathered everyone together and introduced each of us to each other. The last guy in the circle was the size of an NFL tight end and was the marine surveyor. I stopped my boss and said, I know who this guy is, he's a rock star. He's Kyle Smith and he was on TV every night at 2am grinding for Dennis Conner on Stars & Stripes. They all looked at Kyle and said, is that true. He sheepishly said yes.
Capn Q and Ran day. Love the show! Long time listener, first time caller. Look forward to seeing you every week. Do you think you can find me an Albin Vega sitting on a trailer to review?. Keep up the good work!
Great vid guys. All boats are compromises but I would live with the cons because of the pros on this boat. My question is about the "boom furling". I think it makes sense but am curious as to your opinion on them. Anyone else who has experience with boom furlers please add comment as well. That was not standard on this boat so the guy thought it made sense.
this is an old version of it before jiffy reeefing and the more expensive in boom reefing but it works , jus slow so keep a weather eye always and reef early .Also with this rig ,you can drpthe main and just go with the jib and mizzen and roll the jib in as necessary ...great rig

Awesome boat at a great price
A possible topic…. A short explanation of the back mast. Are they harder to sail? It seems like they would be.
good idea... we've mentioned it in a few past episodes but will talk a little more about why and how we love them so much. they aren't really providing much power... more of a gentle, balancing force which makes them easy to handle.
Find myself again.
not a 30 boat in my opinion, but I appreciate the thought captain.
Thank you
Capn Q and Ran day. Love the show! Long time listener, first time caller. Look forward to seeing you every week. Do you think you can find me an Albin Vega sitting on a trailer to review?.
Keep up the good work!
Up Helly Aa!
Let's take this girl cruising! The end of the world waits for no-one!!
Another great find. And this one has dinty more too
Great vid guys.
@@YachtHunters Thanks for your response. ☺ I look forward every week to what you will find!
Nice tribute.
Beautiful boat for the price.
