  • In Noank, Connecticut, we find a bluewater sailboat for sale. She's a New Zealand-made Alan Warwick design Cardinal 42 sailboat built for racing and circumnavigation. The current owner loves to single-hand her and has made some very clever alterations.... including a tweak to the Monitor steering system as well as an innovative solution to seal a tired teak deck.
    Here's the best part.... WE WENT SAILING ON HER!!! It was an amazing spring day and we got some much-needed vitamin D.

    I love that non-skid deck coating! That’s marvelous. Some might criticize, but he saved the decking and put safety first, I like it. On a fiberglass boat, that would be a dream.

    When I started watching these videos a month ago, I couldn't tell an O'day from a Pacific Seacraft. Other than one was obviously a lot nicer then the other. Now I'm looking at tumblehomes and slack bilges, classics versus production etc. Thank you so much gentleman, excellent job, its appreciated.

    I had a very long, tiring, emotional day today and just as I was about to hit the hay, here on the sunny North Coast of Northern Ireland, I saw that you'd uploaded another video. So, I made a late supper and settled down to watch. Watching and laughing and learning and getting lots of vicarious pleasure watching you sail that fabulous boat chilled me right out.
    This is exactly what I want to circumnavigate on. However, its just a little bit tight for me and my significant other. Otherwise I'd be calling the owner immediately.
    Just this once. If I were to rate this video. I'd give it a perfect ten. The amount of information and entertainment you pack into twenty odd minutes is very impressive.
    We're in a pretty tight lockdown here and have been for most of the last year. I find that lots of little things, together, make a big difference and really lift my mood. Your videos are one of these things that have become essentials and I am so grateful for what you do and also for your timing, when you chose to start. I know they take a lot of time and skill and I just want you to know that you are deeply appreciated. Not only by me. By many others too, I have no doubt.
    I noticed the wrist support on the Captain's arm. I hope it heals up quickly and there's no pain.
    Keep safe and keep your beam in the 'fun zone'. Priceless! ;)

      Nice to meet you John, after returning home on Windora in 2001 we very nearly flew back to the States to bye Soolaimon and sail her home. We arrived home last year after our second trip, went and visited Robie and Lynn while working on their new house on the flat right in Kerikeri. The year before we sailed Windora down from Iceland and stayed 4 days at Mystic Seaport which I think is nearby , had we known Lynda and I would have visited you. All the best Phil and Lynda

    Did you notice when you mentioned you were going sailing today that Sea Dog was already on the boat ? When you boarded, Sea Dog got so excited she went up to the front deck and was waiting for ya’ll to cast off. It was great to see her cuddle up to you after the sail and the big smile ya’ll both had from a great day of sailing. I think Randy had a fantastic day also and was more than thrilled to give this sailing vessel some extra bonus points, and a first new rating for the pleasant sail and the way she handled on the water. The three of you make a great team. Thanks for the wonderful video.

    Tease Tease Tease.... It's those long benches. Take one whole side and add a "deluxe" galley with all the fixings. A "heater" (propane or otherwise), a "new fangled" battery bank - solar or generator or prop fed - maybe even a washer/dryer - where the present galley is located. Less room to "hang out" but more room to "live in." And Sail Fast !!! Oh yea! ~~~~~. As always ~. "Thank Ya Very Much." ~. (as Elvis would say.) ✨🌸❤🌸✨

    Insurance for a wood heater would be very expensive. It's a nice boat , excellent live aboard for a couple, the best part down below would be the navigation station. Just not big enough for 6 people, maybe 4 people. But 2 , it's perfect.
    Editing, or just research. Tha nav. station Is awesome. That would be my bed room too. Since I don't have a woman to accommodate.

    The.New Zealand boat builders like cold-molded wood/epoxy composite construction with glass or polypropylene sheathing -- best thing going for custom one-off construction. This looks like a good deal on what was originally a very expensive boat.

  • @Early8Q

    This is a really interesting boat! She seems to be almost straddling eras of design and construction. Her lines remind me of the C&C 41 and yet her underbody and bum is a little more old school. I could imagine she might enjoy an upwind course and she might surprise some onlookers at her performance. Really fun and beautiful find!

    Captain Q is awesome. He takes us though all the design and building aspects of a wooden modern racer-cruiser. The electronics, the nav station, cabin design, novel preservation of the teak and quarters below. Everything about this boat is so well thought out. The professional competence of both Captain Q and the Owner of this boat is exceptional. I would think the owner must feel bittersweet about selling this boat, but he has taken excellent care of her and seems diligently trying to find a good new home and owner for her. That she can still be raced is a huge plus point and would be so beneficial for owner, crew and family. I hope that the owner will be able to own a smaller boat that has some of the same characteristics of this one, particularly the single handed capability. It is so great to see such a comprehensive video of a well-designed, well-maintained spectacular wood racer/cruiser with racing capability left profiled so concisely yet nothing is left unexplored. The eternal excellence of the well-built, well-designed wooden racer is preserved in this video. Captain Q seems to be making videos that preserve our nautical heritage. And nobody can say that wooden boats can't win major races against the best of the non-foiling composites if they move over the top of the water like a primo surfboard.

    • @larrybone4065
      @larrybone4065 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Accuracy is always a concern and hard to know. But professional sailors or sailors with a comprehensive knowledge of boats and sailing are always closer to true accuracy. Also, professional sailors are usually recognizable by their close attention to detail. That said, you seem to be enjoying yourself and the owner of the boat probably greatly appreciated your detailed profile of this yacht. You took us through a lot in a short tour. And videos like this take us out on the water which kind of helps everyone in a very simple way to not worry so much about the other stuff. And this boat moves through the water so fast with seemingly so little wind. And you're the skipper. Definitely this would be a good show on a network and is the type of show we all need. And that you are enjoying this so much is a huge plus. A lot of people do really well when they are feeling good and then that feeling gets passed along over the video and everything looks more hopeful no matter what. That's a gift.

    • @larrybone4065
      @larrybone4065 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you mentioned veracity or accuracy I was reading an article on Alan Warwick that mentioned that Cardinal class of boats you mentioned was his first offshore sailing success in 1980. This might seem obvious but you, yourself have a lot of attention on detail when tour the boats and even sailing them. So I thought it was great that in the article I found this quote, "To him, boat design was as much about the form as the function. Attention to detail was paramount." These videos seem to be a delight for you but as delightful as they are, the content is of high quality. And that is just a really nice everybody wins proposition. These are great!

    A real world cruiser and I definitely would feel better in a boat capable of multiple Hobart / Sydney races. Self steering, energy generation and setup for efficient single handing in a boat that sails well. In my opinion this is the the kind of boat you want for a circumnavigation on a reasonable budget.

    That boat was like a character study of the present owner. The deck material is a winner, as a purely practical solution on a limited budget that ends up actively prolonging the life of the boat, as the full replacement of the teak would be a mammothly expensive task which all but a few would commit to. Also moving around the deck is more secure, what's not to like?

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes, definitely a different approach and economical as well. Up close it wasn't the prettiest thing... but it kept him out sailing and not spending a small fortune on a deck rebuild so he gets some serious bonus points for clever problem solving. cheers

    Although I’d love to give Capt. Q the credit, I’m sure it was Randay that chose “All In Your Eyes” by Nocturnal Spirits for the music during the sail. Fantastic choice!

    Craigslist ad says "The deck is coated with Sani-Tred Liquid Rubber Base over ¾” marine plywood." Does that mean the teak was removed ??
    Heard Capt say funky at least twice, I agree, 59k, at least 20k overpriced IMHO.

    • @AlienX69
      @AlienX69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YachtHunters Capt, sorry to say in this case gangster is not good. To me it looks like a bad way to cover up a problem. Remove teak, epoxy holes, then do one of two things. One resurface with vinyl teak or refinish deck Gelcoat/AwlGrip. Still confused why CL ad says 3/4" marine plywood is under Sani-Tred, something don't add up ?

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the record I just checked with the owner this morning to confirm that in fact there is plywood under the teak and the teak is still there it is just been sanded down and smooth out and any highs or lows dealt with before he put on the sandy tread. It really is a terrific coating

    • @AlienX69

      @@YachtHunters My thought pattern was out in left field forgetting original construction is basically wood. I was thinking teak over FRP/GRP, not marine plywood. Thanks for clarification Capt.
