    The introduction to this video is the exact reasoning behind why the "if you think it's so bad, let's see you do better" argument and similar arguments are so worthless.

    • @bibbobella
      @bibbobella 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Always hated those arguments! No! I can not fly a fucking plain but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't be able to say that the guy flying the plane directly into the ocean isn't a shitty pilot non the less!
      You don't have to be a master at something to be able to tell it isn't perfect. I can't sing but I have good ears and am able to hear when people are missing notes..It is two completly different things.
      That being said just going "Wooo this is shit!!!!" without actually saying anything about what makes it shitty is useless and arent exactly helping..constructive criticism is a thing and I wish less people would shoot others down for possibly good arguments just because "Ugh you as if you could do it better!"
      No he probably couldn't! but maybe the author can! but how would he know it if he isn't being told about it?

    Sucy Wonderland is my favourite episode of LWA. It perfectly combines great animation, imaginative visual comedy, an engaging plot and interesting message. A lot of coming-of-age anime has simple-minded and cliched message like "be yourself", "be open to others", but Sucy Wonderland conveys something completely different: there's no "true self" you can simply follow along. You make your decision on whether you should follow or suppress certain impulses happening in your mind. Your selfhood is shaped by thousands of conscious or unconscious decision you've made everyday. And it is necessary that you do suppress certain transient impulses become who you want yourself to be. This message is not new as a philosophy. Aristotle, Confucius and Existentialism has all said something similar. But what surprises me is the presence of this kind of lucid and mature message in a somewhat "cartoonish" anime, and how perfectly it is embodied in the visual representation and in the comedy. It brings child-like imagination and mature idea together organically. It is why I think LWA surpasses KLK and Gurren Lagann. Though I am slightly disappointed by the development from ep23 onward. Instead of a deep exploration of betrayal, guilt, forgiveness and redemption we have a very typical final battle that conveniently resolve everything.

    I'm glad to see someone standing up for this show. I've seen so much criticism, people calling it boring, cliche, every name in the book. I like what you said about being trope savvy. I have a friend who constantly complains about the lack of originality in Anime, and how he gets taken out of it when they recycle an old cliche, and I get that, but just because a story is one of millions to utilize the hero's journey or any other structure doesn't automatically make it bad, or even unoriginal, because most of the time that originality lies in the execution. In that regard, I've been happy watching LWA for it's charming character interactions, and slice of life storytelling, and I wish others could see the good it has to offer as well.

    People have no idea just how seperate the ability to analyze art is from the ability to create it.
    You have begun to illustrate the dissonance between the two connected but separate things, perfectly, and its cathartic for me
    In various arts schools the center of the course is really about teaching you how to analyze, and then leaving it to you to try those those things in your own work.
    As a creator my biggest obstacle now is to try and connect my ability to create interesting and poignant screen plays to my ability to analyze them, because I feel like if i can do that, I know i can better translate the ideas I have in my head to paper, as well as being able to put more meaning into my work.

      It's unfortunate to hear that even in art schools it is like this. I remember being extremely frustrated in highschool when classes like english were all about the analysis of literature with 0 focus on teaching how to write well.

    • @SuicidalLaughter

      In music, many teachers will tell to just outright copy other works, for the sole purpose of not only teaching how to dissect a piece but also how to recreate that piece. Originality is for people who know what they are doing. Try starting by making as close to a carbon copy of a price as possible without literally copying things word for word. It doesn't have to be entire pieces, just scenes or chapters will work fine. Once you can do you that you can take that understanding of how to reproduce those elements and make something unique with them.

    • @go-ba332
      @go-ba332 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Originality is for people who know what they are doing."
      I strongly disagree. Analyzing all the media in the world doesn't teach you how to use that knowledge to create something new and unique.
      You say "you can take that understanding of how to reproduce those elements and make something unique with them." as if that's a simple process that you can just get started on right away once you've "learned enough". I also disagree with that notion that there is any discernible point at which you suddenly have enough knowledge to be able to make something, there is no minimum knowledge necessary and there is always more to learn that will improve your skills.
      The creative process involves a whole other set of skills that you should be training alongside your study of the medium.
      The notion that things are best learned from hard study with a strict structure while experimentation and play are completely ignored is exactly why I hated standard education.

    • @mmike10720
      @mmike10720 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GO-Ba
      There is no way yet to teach someone how to create. There is no class that says
      "Here is how you make a story."
      Classes exist that say "this is the structure of a story." Or "this is how and why certain elements of a story can elicit this sort of emotion from you".
      And they have excercises where you try to use those different elements in your own stories. (In creative writing often they have you do something called writing an "imitation" of a work)
      There are even classes like "here are techniques to pull from your subconscious (stream of conciousness).
      But what you are asking for simply doesn't exist. There isn't anyway to teach a person how to be inspired, and how to translate that inspiration into a work of art step by step.
      Art is too subjective, too personal, and our understanding of the brain too limited for that to be possible rn.

    You completely nailed it.
    It annoys me when people complain about how analyzing books or movies are pointless since it is trying to find meaning the author meant even though we don't know for sure if they meant it that way.
    Except that isn't the point of analysis and sometimes the author's message won't get across the same to everyone and that's okay. Criticizing and analyzing media is about talking about what a piece of media means to you and what you got out of it.

  • @supercyc10
    @supercyc10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I can’t speak for novel writers
    But for a screenplay writers, analyzing content is everything to them. Professionals like Robert McKee and Blake Snyder (for ex.) make it a point to watch other movies in their respective genre, scrutinize every detail, translate, and then reverse engineer it.

    Funny you should bring up this episode, cause the next episode is where I dropped the show. I took issue with ep 4 because it's essentially nothing but a walk-n-talk. Redhead makes lots of references to these books but she never tells them from start to finish. Not only do we not get involved, but neither do her friends really. Then she gets offered to put all her knowledge to use, but she simply declines it and the episode comes full circle

    Its a rare occurrence when authors jump from genre from genre allowing their characters to wander through set pieces that will make them more fully realized. Although changes in genre can be seen in adaptions of older media (i.e Lost in Space from Swiss Family Robinson), a Gintama adjacent story are few and fairly near between in popular media. I believe that fan fiction are extensions of what can logically follow from a character or story in the cannon but doesn't follow because of genre limitations. Fanfiction allows for the characters to react and be changed by places and scenarios that just couldn't happen in their own universe. They can pick up on the subtle tropes that are suited to a different setting and genre. I think that genre should be seen less as a road that the character need to stay on, and more like vehicles that can be driven, replaced, tuned up and wrecked. In this essay I will defend Stony coffee shop au mpreg...

    This episode is definitely one of them. It represents the joy of not being behind the curtain and still the strong respect for who chooses to be behind there. The first half of LWA is an absolute classic. There are still great episodes in the second half even with the switch-up with the tech arc at the forefront, but the reveal that Ursula stole Akko's magical potential years ago ruined a lot of what seemed to be presented in their relationship up to that point. Imagine being a successful painter and having a student walk up to you, show you their crappy paintings, and say to you, "I chose to become a painter all because of you!" Would you not feel a personal obligation to help them with extra lessons? That is what Ursula and Akko's relationship was built up as. There is no real-world counterpart to stealing a student's potential years prior, so it stops being relatable. I think I was more upset that a perfect show just became a pretty great show in that moment.

    After taking a creative writing course a lot of what he says here is true. Especially the story writing itself. I would come up with an idea, setting, and character reasoning/motivations and obstacles to their goals. From there I write the story scene by scene, asking myself what would spice up the story and what would my characters do when placed in an uncomfortable situation.
    Some examples of my characters
    Alexander Clives: a witch child wishing to step out of the shadow of his possessive mother and wants to pursue a romantic relationship with the only normal person in his life (that being the church girl Marie, his best friend).
    Alastor Poewell: an introverted ghost boy who seeks genuine human relationships but due to an event in his past life, his introversion has taken itself to the extreme. Untrusting, stalking, and blackmail to feel in control of his life.
    Silas Stone: a rich kid ghoul given everything in life on a golden plate. His attempt to find passion where he is challenged led to the discovery that judges and critics were bribed. Causing a spiral of self destructive behavior and a “consequences don’t exist” mentality.

  • @RoarTheRapper

    I gave up writing fiction for the same reason as you, oddly enough! I even self-published a few stories. I love what I wrote and my friends and family did too, but I realized looking back that often the whole reason I wrote the story was because I wanted to communicate something (like being lonely as a single man XD) but couldn’t just communicate what I felt. So I wrote a whole story conveying that pain in another character, and felt hopeful about my own life when I saw success in theirs.

    Good point about how authors aren’t satisfied with their writing because they translated their thoughts on paper. Similar to how people who’ve read the manga aren’t satisfied with the anime because it’s a translation of two different mediums.

    About your fiction writing, you can find a ghost writer or something. Form a partnership with a writer you trust, you'll give the content, and he'll give the delivery...

    it is way easier to analyze than to create from scratch. thats why writers need some type of proof readers/watchers that analyze their show/script before it is finalized/animated to better it. i myself can easily read/watch an episode/show and correct many things. "oh add this here." "make this character say this referring back to the first episode." "have the character do this specific movement to convey..." etc. shows need to feel more complete and not episode based and you can do that by careful intertwining bits and pieces of the narrative here and there

    This was a really good episode. At the time I figured that it was about books and fandoms, so I figured I was being pandered to and biased.

    Great to see someone talking about this series, especially something about a pretty unimportant episode in the grand scale. Though the ending and overarching narrative were a bit dissapointing, I still really value it for the slice of life and what it at least attempted to do.

    Hey Digi, i wanna make some annoying question xd, but now that u have mentioned your interest in writing and analyzing i'm wondering, if u could make a vid about what do u think of dialogue and how do your fave authors achieve a great dynamic with realistic and accurate interactions between characters... If u ever want to do something like that obviously. If u don't have any interest in doing that, can u recommend some bibliography about analysis on those topics specifically? I'm trying to understand it... Because i also have those kind of interests.
    I can't find anything on the internet rn that covers what i want.
    Sorry for any kind of gramar mistake, i'm a spanish native speaker. And thanks for reading...

    Only first 6 Warriors books are worth reading. Period. Also fantastic comment on a difference between being able to analyze something and creating something. My mother teaches people to sing without being able to sing herself. And she's very good at it. I analyze music and some graphic designs very well but I'm not very good at creating them. ^^""" ...overall, many wise observations in this video. Well done.

    LWA first season is fantastic. I absolutely love Trigger's aesthetic, and I think LWA has such a unique look and feel to it, and both the OVAs are some of my favorite bits of anime ever. Just... don't expect to feel the same way about the second season. It did NOT end strong.

      The main plot was basically too silly to take seriously but too involved to ignore. It didn't need to have such high stakes to get the message across. Also, introducing techno-sorcery and then just making it a tool of the villain and nothing else gave me the bluest balls to have ever blued.

    As someone who analyzes anime as a hobby it is much easier to analyze and point out tropes than actually creating my own work. I can break down series but have a massive problem with expressing my own ideas ouside of that. Anyeay, this was one of my favorite episodes of Little Witch Academia from the hilarious references to the reveal of the newest author of Nightfall. Also, Lotte is a character that I wish had recieved more focus on in general.
