Well...you cant blame the man for wanting the drawn frames to be perfectly consistent. For one, Studio Trigger needs ALOT more animators, and alot more sketchers. But the studio prefers not to be sponsored or merge with other companies so that they can be as creative as they want to be. But guys, ya need more people. This is putting an obvious strain on the staff.
At some point, someone else needs to start worrying about the well being of these animators cus they themselves won't. They're programmed to work to death. And with people like you only worried about output, anime as we know it might not last too long...

while it is still stressful, at least trigger treats their employees like humans and pay them living wages. They help their employees improve the skills they use and develop personal skills and give even the newest of employees the chance to shine
i really do not like it very much. i can always tell where traditional animation ends and CG begins--it's always a little glide-ey and a little stiff and constricted-feeling. i find myself missing the verve and emotion that hand-drawn art has.
Most animation or art work doesn’t pay nearly enough for the work they do, it sucks because people are taught from a very young age to subconsciously think art isn’t worth much since there’s so much of it
It takes more than a week. OPM season 2 has already been in production for several months, and its estimated a normal 12 episode season of a high quality animated takes about 8 months to do. Shizu, if producers decide to start the production near the release date, then they are gonna work until the very last minute in every detail, but that doesn't change that there are very very few shows that are actually made an episode a week. South Park does that, with very simple animation and mostly only 2 voice actors, but anime, especially anything that is not long-running, takes a lot of time to produce.

What I meant by "lazy animator" is an animator who's outputting low effort animations. Basically the people who've gotten into the animating business and just animate for the sake of money instead of passion. Maybe they used to have passion, but well with how the anime industry is currently, it's no surprise they've forgotten it. I mean you can see it when there's lack of movement (only mouth movement), missing objects (like an underwear on a person... that seriously happened), janky animation (some animes do it intentionally, but you can tell when it's just lazy animation), and more. Most of the time they just end up scrapping the animations and fixing it entirely for the bluray releases. So yes there is such a thing as a lazy animator. I myself had once wanted to become an animator. But after learning just how much time, effort, passion, and patience you needed to pull through animating. I kind of looked into other passions instead. So I can totally understand why lazy animators are lazy. I'd probably be one myself if I were them maybe. But yeah. I definitely wouldn't say I don't think there is such a thing as a "Lazy animator". If only that were the case, we'd have so many interestingly animated animes every season! But it's not. ;-;
Kuro Usagi it is not being lazy, it is being tired as hell/not having time/budget. When k animate for myself; I do sometime forget an element on a drawing/frame because animation is soooo long to do that sometime you brain is so tired that you dont see even the most ridiculous errors.

The thing is most artist are not doing what they are doing to get paid a lot. Of course artist like money like any human does, but for us artist the thought that we created something, and someone out there enjoyed it , is enough to make us feel content .

This industry is inflated with so much human resource, although it is inspiring to have this so many people willing to contribute, but as what i've said, there are too many people in this industry. You have finally faced the reality of how the animation industry works. Now you have a glimpse of the reality to include in the pursuit of your dreams. Don't get me wrong, any jobs any kids dreamed of having will always have some kind of downsides. While some jobs will certainly let you be technically more well off than animating, in the end, the key answer lies on wether or not you consider animating to be the thing that makes you the most content in your life. After all, if you truly love to animate, something like this shouldn't discourage you to continue doing it. The fact that you can finally live a life of your passion should be enough, it's gonna have challenges, but all lives will always have challenges. No exceptions. And fyi, there will always be other studios that treat their employees better than some, as for workloads, that's an animator's life for you. Now the question is: 'Do you believe your love in animating will keep you going regardless?'

Cromer lel this is true but animation doesn’t need these grueling working conditions and inhumane schedules. Animating frame by frame isn’t the issue here at all no one is complaining about that aspect, the issue is low compensation and work schedules that hardly allow for any sleep or days off. The anime industry is notorious for how over worked and undervalued its workers are.

Japan should do the work of creating a streaming service that is functional and modern like the pirate sites. You would at least make ad revenue and I would easily pay a subscription charge. The problem is now that anime is divvied up among content giants like Amazon and Netflix. Produce a package of convenience and great picture/quality, and you would see more money. It's also sad to think that if somebody created an actual patreon for animators, then studio heads would just cut their wages more. Japan as a country doesn't have enough respect or give enough entitlement to working people. They're in the top five economies of the world and yet they treat human beings like this. Eventually Japan has to stop what it's doing and look at itself and address changes to what it sees in the mirror. Seriously, they crave human misery, it seems like to me.

Yeah but these guys filming the documentary showed up at the very end when everyone's behind schedule. These guys are all tired, but it's not always like this. If they had filmed the first two weeks, probably everyone would look happier and rested, but since everything piled up thanks to the director being perfectionist, they all look bummed out and over-worked. I work in movies and sometimes the schedules can be crazy.. but it's fun anyway. It's not like I'm gonna have a giant smile after not sleeping for 24 hours, doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. Starting a new project and then seeing the finished product are the fun parts, the hard work in between is just that, hard work, but the more you work the better you get at it, so it's also rewarding.

I've watched a lot of great anime recently, but near if not at the very top is the original Little Witch Academia short and Mahoujikake no Parade special. I don't have a lot of money but I will do my best to support this studio because these guys are too fucking cool and I love the determination they have even as they're threatening to fall down from fatigue.
Im actually glad someone made a documentary like this.. You can see how animators struggle in perfecting their art, but at the same time balancing with schedule, and that they have to cooperate with each and every staff they have
trigger seems very small in terms of how many animators they have, hopefully they can hire more in the future since the man power is required. Also love how that production assistant has all those awesome kamen rider figures.
I'm so disappointed I let myself lose my fire for real animation. I used to be these guys; loving what I do even though I felt like throwing up every day and night from the stress and overwork. Made the mistake of working stupidly simple, corporate Flash animation jobs for shows I don't care about so I could make enough to survive and now I'm stuck in that loop. Actually, it's probably more that I'm just not capable of organizing myself to create something sustainable from scratch. I really envy them, I want to pour my heart into something I love again but I can't afford to. I'm still grateful for videos like these, I still feel that hope when watching it.
No? It's absolutely sad. They destroy themselves to make something good and get shit pay and recognition for it. A bunch of people saying ''wow they're so hardworking'' means nothing when you're a soulless husk who does nothing but draw and draw all day. It's sad. there is SO MUCH WORK that is put into animated productions and it's often undermined. props to all those underpaid, hardworking animators, storyboard artists, writers, VAs, and directors!
The real MVPs. I respect anyone who works in any sort of production, but man do anime animators have it rough. Digital doesn't just mean 3d animation, you can draw in a digital animation too. I think most people would expect this rather then literally drawing by hand a la pencil and paper.
I suddenly wonder about the supporting team . things like : - how is the paper , pencil, and eraser supplied, and how much used everyday - I see they have a high quality chair, how much do they cost? - small things like printer, lighting etc . basically all management thingies.. without them those animators would be more stressed O.o
One day, Joe Schmoe brought his "awesome" digital anime drawing to Japanese animation studio in hope to get hired as a bona fide animator. Recruiter: (After looking at the portfolio) "You draw with digital tools?" "Well that's nice, but we can't accept your work because your draftsmanship doesn't meet our standard (His thought: man, what is this crap?)". Joe: "Working in the anime studio always has been my dream!" Recruiter: "Oh, you still want to work with us?" "In that case, our inbetween department needs people who can do cleanup. However we'll only pay 200 Yen (2 Dollars) per sheet and it has to meet Inbetween Checker's standard no matter what." Omg i never really thought of how hard animating is, i did have an idea but i didnt know it was this bad. However this is very inspirational bcoz now I'll tell myself to draw more slowly and more precisely since i have the time and so that i can make a nice job. But these guys are superhumans, they could finish a drawing that took me two days in ten minutes and make it look perfect while im still there struggling to figure out what went wrong. I should practice more!!!

i really love how they animated little witch academia too, especially those amazing action scenes and dynamic facial expressions. so looking at behind the scenes makes me feel even more ive been thinking of the word for awhile now and i still cant find the word for it so i gave up. but thank you so much studio trigger! it was really really an amazing show.
wow....that was so much work put into this. Theses people were determined and i appreciate that. They were working non-stop. Also i absolutely loved who was taking the video. It sort of felt like this was one of those nature show. "Here are the animators in there natural habitat." (ps. someone get him some toast)
This is so interesting and educational. It shows you the world of the animation industry and how little they get compensated for these long hours of hard work. This taught me to have patience in the small animatics or animations I make! It times a lot of time and dedication to get stuff done! This has helped me learn much more than any animation tutorial I’ve ever seen, I’m so inspired by everyone on the animation team!
Passion overruns low pay sometimes. I feel as though some very passionate people forget the shit pay because they just absolutely love what they're doing.. I do hope of course that animators get appreciated more in the long run... This is literally spine breaking work that deserves more recognition in the world.
The animators look depressed and dull.. But i love Little Witch Academia and it proves that all their hard work has succeeded in creating a fantastic series 💖
The good thing about japans’s animation is that they help each other even if the animators are from different company. There is no rivalry. Man this is stressful but yeah, if you love what you do, that’ll be enough to keep you going. I salutes these guys. ❤️

one of the beauty and pluses about my witch academia is it's beautiful animation and relativity to kevment and even over exaggerating postures and poses I really like it and also I live that the woman saying "it's the same what the hell is different" and he's like "it's the finger tips " it shows how much attention to detail this anime shows
Being here after seeing the final product is so mesmerizing... It hits you, the amount of work, effort and love put into it, all the scenes, movements and characters perfectly and carefully placed, nothing was left to chance, nothing seems like it wasn't planned. All these people are so dedicated to their craft and it shows. I mean, yes of course they look underslept and stressed out but... the anime speaks for itself. They did marvelous work and it shows. Props to them, hope they got a well deserved rest.

This industry is inflated with so much human resource, although it is inspiring to have this so many people willing to contribute, but as what i've said, there are too many people in this industry. Japanese people have to realize that and find their own niche in the job market where they can earn more and love what they are doing.
This movie looked damned good in my opinion and its kinda nice to see how hard the animators worked on this because it definitely showed in the final product

You have finally faced the reality of how the animation industry works. Now you have a glimpse of the reality to include in the pursuit of your dreams. Don't get me wrong, any jobs any kids dreamed of having will always have some kind of downsides. While some jobs will certainly let you be technically more well off than animating, in the end, the key answer lies on wether or not you consider animating to be the thing that makes you the most content in your life. After all, if you truly love to animate, something like this shouldn't discourage you to continue doing it. The fact that you can finally live a life of your passion should be enough, it's gonna have challenges, but all lives will always have challenges. No exceptions. And fyi, there will always be other studios that treat their employees better than some, as for workloads, that's an animator's life for you. Now the question is: 'Do you believe your love in animating will keep you going regardless?'

Every anime requires you to animate and you gotta have to do it frame by frame. Relying on tweening will make your work feel unnatural
Cromer lel this is true but animation doesn’t need these grueling working conditions and inhumane schedules. Animating frame by frame isn’t the issue here at all no one is complaining about that aspect, the issue is low compensation and work schedules that hardly allow for any sleep or days off. The anime industry is notorious for how over worked and undervalued its workers are.

I hope while you're worried about these animators, you're also contributing in helping them too by buying their work aka the anime they're working on. Please rethink whenever you're watching anime for free without paying for their hard work
Japan should do the work of creating a streaming service that is functional and modern like the pirate sites. You would at least make ad revenue and I would easily pay a subscription charge. The problem is now that anime is divvied up among content giants like Amazon and Netflix. Produce a package of convenience and great picture/quality, and you would see more money.
It's also sad to think that if somebody created an actual patreon for animators, then studio heads would just cut their wages more.
Japan as a country doesn't have enough respect or give enough entitlement to working people. They're in the top five economies of the world and yet they treat human beings like this. Eventually Japan has to stop what it's doing and look at itself and address changes to what it sees in the mirror.

As stressful as this seems .. it also looks like real fun, everyone working in a team to meat a deadline .. animation companies are awesome.
.......i can tell you its not. its stressfull as fuck to be 2 WEEKS behind schedule and rushing to meet the deadline.
Yeah but these guys filming the documentary showed up at the very end when everyone's behind schedule. These guys are all tired, but it's not always like this. If they had filmed the first two weeks, probably everyone would look happier and rested, but since everything piled up thanks to the director being perfectionist, they all look bummed out and over-worked.
I work in movies and sometimes the schedules can be crazy.. but it's fun anyway. It's not like I'm gonna have a giant smile after not sleeping for 24 hours, doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.
Starting a new project and then seeing the finished product are the fun parts, the hard work in between is just that, hard work, but the more you work the better you get at it, so it's also rewarding.

I've watched a lot of great anime recently, but near if not at the very top is the original Little Witch Academia short and Mahoujikake no Parade special. I don't have a lot of money but I will do my best to support this studio because these guys are too fucking cool and I love the determination they have even as they're threatening to fall down from fatigue.
Yeah, i will support them too, i can't give much since i'm still high school student. But i will donate for them, but i just don't know how.
Im actually glad someone made a documentary like this.. You can see how animators struggle in perfecting their art, but at the same time balancing with schedule, and that they have to cooperate with each and every staff they have

trigger seems very small in terms of how many animators they have, hopefully they can hire more in the future since the man power is required. Also love how that production assistant has all those awesome kamen rider figures.
watching these animators suffer is a good reminder during finals week that my workload is really not as bad
I'm so disappointed I let myself lose my fire for real animation. I used to be these guys; loving what I do even though I felt like throwing up every day and night from the stress and overwork. Made the mistake of working stupidly simple, corporate Flash animation jobs for shows I don't care about so I could make enough to survive and now I'm stuck in that loop. Actually, it's probably more that I'm just not capable of organizing myself to create something sustainable from scratch.
I really envy them, I want to pour my heart into something I love again but I can't afford to. I'm still grateful for videos like these, I still feel that hope when watching it.

No? It's absolutely sad. They destroy themselves to make something good and get shit pay and recognition for it. A bunch of people saying ''wow they're so hardworking'' means nothing when you're a soulless husk who does nothing but draw and draw all day. It's sad. Working as an artist shouldn't mean destroying yourself.

there is SO MUCH WORK that is put into animated productions and it's often undermined. props to all those underpaid, hardworking animators, storyboard artists, writers, VAs, and directors!

The real MVPs. I respect anyone who works in any sort of production, but man do anime animators have it rough. They deserve a lot better for the incredible work they do, which reaches many all across the world and inspires even more. Hopefully, conditions get better for them soon. They have my deepest respect.

Digital doesn't just mean 3d animation, you can draw in a digital animation too. I think most people would expect this rather then literally drawing by hand a la pencil and paper.

Omg i never really thought of how hard animating is, i did have an idea but i didnt know it was this bad. However this is very inspirational bcoz now I'll tell myself to draw more slowly and more precisely since i have the time and so that i can make a nice job. But these guys are superhumans, they could finish a drawing that took me two days in ten minutes and make it look perfect while im still there struggling to figure out what went wrong. I should practice more!!!

wow....that was so much work put into this. Theses people were determined and i appreciate that. They were working non-stop. Also i absolutely loved who was taking the video. It sort of felt like this was one of those nature show. "Here are the animators in there natural habitat." (ps. someone get him some toast)
This is so interesting and educational. It shows you the world of the animation industry and how little they get compensated for these long hours of hard work. This taught me to have patience in the small animatics or animations I make! It times a lot of time and dedication to get stuff done! This has helped me learn much more than any animation tutorial I’ve ever seen, I’m so inspired by everyone on the animation team!

Passion overruns low pay sometimes. I feel as though some very passionate people forget the shit pay because they just absolutely love what they're doing.. I do hope of course that animators get appreciated more in the long run... This is literally spine breaking work that deserves more recognition in the world.
The animators look depressed and dull.. But i love Little Witch Academia and it proves that all their hard work has succeeded in creating a fantastic series 💖

The was wonderful. Definitely turned into one of my favorites.
Being here after seeing the final product is so mesmerizing... It hits you, the amount of work, effort and love put into it, all the scenes, movements and characters perfectly and carefully placed, nothing was left to chance, nothing seems like it wasn't planned. All these people are so dedicated to their craft and it shows. I mean, yes of course they look underslept and stressed out but... the anime speaks for itself. They did marvelous work and it shows. Props to them, hope they got a well deserved rest.
