    MAN, have you heard about the original novelizations of the first couple episodes? Apparently the guy in charge of most of the writing wanted the show to be MUCH darker: Ash is trailer trash from literally nowhere, the Oak family is only famous in Pallet town because an ancestor of theirs cracked the top 1000 best Pokemon trainers, Ash's Mom is in her 20s and is glad to see Ash leave so she can have her life back, Ash's Dad ALSO ran off to be a Pokemon Trainer, 10 is the legal age, Pokemon Training is some kind of weird government welfare system, the hospital and police departments are completely corrupt and run by a single family each (Jenny and Joy are last names)...
    ...anyway yeah in the original script for the episode, Gym Leaders lose their license if they are beaten 3 times in a row and Brock already lost twice. If he loses one more time, he loses his job and cannot support his family.
    Here's the translations:

      Best comment.
      In reading the original scripts/novels, you really see how the world of Pokemon had an internal logic that made the early episodes' events make a lot more sense. But with the inevitable editorial process that goes on at a television network, especially with a show aimed at children, you can see how that internal logic was sacrificed and replaced in some areas with more easily digestible events and characters, even when they didn't make much sense.
      Another notable case of this in anime is the original Mobile Suit Gundam, which had a series of novelizations by show creator Yoshiyuki Tomino in order to display his vision in a way that wasn't compromised by studio-forced changes. There are lots of small adjustments, but they most notably included a greater focus on military realism & detail, a sexual relationship between Amuro & Sayla, and Amuro's death at the end.

    LOL! yes i think your pretty much correct about all of this. In general this is why I love season one because damn! the stories and characters were so realistically flawed! that being said as a long term pokemon viewer. yes, brock's dad does learn his lesson and stays. his younger brother becomes the gym leader and strangely enough his mom does come back... and forces the gym to become a water type gym... all for her ego as well! this shit totally runs in the family!

      No, Brock's younger brother becomes the the gym leader in a later ova episode, can't remember which season it is, but I think that one is placed after Brock's left Ash's party. In fact all of those plots points are things that happened in the show.

    The Kanto region's gym leaders were very unprofessional in the anime. Brock's siblings could just barge in and harass the challenger, Misty's sisters were trying to give away badges, Erika refused Ash's challenge because he insulted her perfume, and Sabrina was just a psychopath. Also Giovanni and everything about him. At least Gary implies that there are other gyms in the region in the anime, but still.

    The Pokemon series was suppose to be more mature. There was a writer that took upon himself to do some serious world building, like how if a gym leader lost three times in a row they had to give up their licence. Unfortunately said writer left early on and the show fell into repeating itself quickly...
    BTW, the reason Brock falls in love with every woman he sees? He figured out that his siblings could use a mother figure, so he desperately searches for a one...

      You're referring to Takeshi Sudo, aren't you? I don't know what to say about "leaving early on" since his last work for Pokemon was screenplay writing for episode 244, although knowing how big Pokemon is now you're not that far off.
      Anyway, that world building you're talking about is from the Pocket Monsters: The Animation. Aside from the Rule of the Three you've mentioned, there are other pretty grim things in there, like Brock's siblings actually being the product of his mother's numerous relationships or that being a Gym leader (aside from the Rule of the Three) is a very tough job as it's costly and pays pretty poorly. The brutal nature of Gym leading also being the reason why Misty's parents abandoned their children and the Cerulean Gym, thus forcing her and her sisters to run the Gym.

    • @littleeark1
      @littleeark1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s interesting because had they gone with that plot, the plot we know today wouldn’t work because by the time Ash got to the Cerulean Gym, the sisters would’ve lost their license, and I doubt they would’ve found another leader in time for his arrival. So he would’ve either had to come back at a later time, or wait in town for them to hire another one, which would’ve been boring af. Or, he could just go get one of Gary’s 10 badges 😂😂😂

    Ash never became a good trainer.
    He runs into a dude with a Hitmonchan and gets his shit completely canned. His big plan to beat this guy isn't to train Pikachu to fight to his strengths by focusing on evasion and fast lightning attacks, but to attempt teach Pikachu how to box.

    • @MARCSEIDis
      @MARCSEIDis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      He did become a good trainer and that was ultimately the point of him finally earning the respect of Gary and eventually beating him in the Johto arc.
      And throughout the Hoenn, Battle Frontier, Sinnoh, and Kalos (and to some extent Unova) arcs he continues to grow and learn as a Trainer. Ole boy doesn't make juvenile mistakes anymore. Ash actually thinks with his head in battle, works with his Pokemon to become stronger, and hell, in the Hoenn and Sinnoh arcs, HE acts as the mentor to May and Dawn respectively.
      Y'all be shitting on Ash having only watched (and continue to watch) the first Kanto arc and think that's all there is to Ash, but lmao that kid's gone through some real character growth in 20 years.

      Dude, Pokemon anime has its own logic, they even tell you that in one episode when Ash and the others go to a school.
      Misty says this to a kid "Maybe you are good in the simulator, but this is the real life, now fight me" in the next scene her Stamie beats this kid's Weepimbell with water gun, then this girl Giselle appears and fight Misty with a Graveller then Misty lose that match and in the next scene Pikachu fights with a Cubone and wins with a thundershock.
      At this point the series told you three times "The games logic dosent apply here" come on, pay more attetion.

      I wouldn't even consider that episode canon to be honest. As of sun and moon Brock is not a gym leader anymore or even in the Kanto region. Also what's with the season 1 outfits when they've both gone through multiple wardrobe changes across the series since then?

    Also Brock kind of ended the fight before the sprinklers went on by telling his Onyx to stop the attack since it was pointless to even continue, Ash kind of exploited this act of kindness by attacking after his opponent, who is the Gym Leader, ended the fight. How that behavior is worth a badge is anyone's guess. Though Ash barely wins any badge the honest way during the Kanto arc anyway. Really if the different Gym Leaders were to sit down and talk about it they would end up thinking Ash and Team Rocket are trying to scam badges out of them.

    • @ObsoleteMule
      @ObsoleteMule 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dionysus24779 Hmm good point, recently I went back and watched the Kanto season and saw that episode and I thought, "Ash, you cheating scumbag, Brock halted the battle to save your Pikachu then you go and exploit the fact water somehow weakens Rock type Pokemon", he then forfeits when it is within the parameters of fair fight and gets rewarded the badge anyway for it, made no sense. A more realistic approach would've been Brock tells Ash that because he walked away when Onyx was vulnerable it counts as a forfeit. When Ash learns what is effective on rock types then he could use that against Onyx and maybe win the battle, but in a fair and square fashion, but oh no, we only have a 20 minute slot for this episode, let's half arse it and give him the badge anyway for walking away from the fight.
      Could you imagine Brock just going behind Ash's back one day while travelling and go to a meeting with the other Kanto gym leaders disgruntled because they were exploited during their challenges/battles and slander him off as a cheating prick then Ash finds out and they get into a massive row over it? That would be an interesting concept and one I would have loved to see personally.

    Not gonna lie, I rewatched big parts over and over over the years and while nostalgia comes crashing down every single time when I do and makes me love the anime, this is the one thing that always bothered me about the first season as I grew older. Ash is an extremely immature brat the whole way through (and in a way still is in later seasons, trying to force his ideals onto his less empathetic rivals), gets by on pure luck and the power of friendship, gets most of his Kanto badges out of pity or because of out-of-battle accomplishments (with some admittedly epic exceptions like Lt. Surge or Blaine) and then, the culmination of stupidity, *does not train a single day in the two months before the Indigo League starts, even though is buddies even call him out on it. As a kid I was pretty upset at Ash losing after dozens of reruns, but in hindsight, it made total sense. Ash as a Pokemon Trainer at that point had only learned one thing: caring about his Pokemon (something like the Brock fight doesn't ever happen again iirc). It isn't until later seasons that Ash actually actively trains his Pokemon and devises up actual strategies that earn him the title of an actual trainer (or make his victories believable for that matter).
    In a sense, I think it was *good* that Ash lost that time. He deserved it. Admittedly, he probably should have lost in the very first round, what with his completely un-trained Krabby ssuddenly evolving, but okay, I can see that they wanted us to see *some* cool fights.

      The Pokemon games have always had some darker undertones.

      It's just ash walking around making random pokemon friends and rarely catching them and trashing team rocket in EVERY episode.
      U call that a plot?
      Digimon had an ACTUAL plot... you can't compare.
      When i was a kid , i was watching both of them and had fun with both of them.
      However when digimon episode was finished i had this urge... i wanted to watch the next one asap! i wanted to know what would happen next u know?
      That's what "plot" does.
      I didn't had this feeling with pokemon, even though i somehow enjoyed it...but as i grew up i came to understand and form my own personal opinion that if a series/ anime doesn't provide you with this feeling it's not worth watching.

    When it comes to the original Pokémon show there were a lot of things that were going on,
    For example in the original Japanese Version the reason Brock’s siblings are trying to stop Ash from winning has nothing to do with the sprinkler systems creating an unfair advantage. It was because if Ash had actually won the fight Brock would’ve been fired as a gym leader, because apparently if you lose three times you were disqualified as one, not three times in a row, three times period.
    There was also apparently an episode later on in the English dub between arcs where Brock went back home and found his mother had returned as well. And because she used water types she took over the gym and started re-decorating it ended in one of the older siblings having to defeat his mom in a Pokémon battle using rock types against her water type and won, it was supposed to be some message about turning a weakness into a strength and improvising. (Or was it about compromising? I don’t know)

    Remember that time in the anime when Poison was *actual* poison and the pokémon could literaly die if not cured? Or when Burn was *actually* a burn? Now Poison is just an electric shock, and Burn is just a sudden combustion.
