  • Due to the numerous requests for another video with large constrictors, Kevin McCurley of New England Reptile Distributors helps explain the approach to handling a large pied reticulated python. I did this on the fly as always so I apologize in advance for the shaky video.

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@traceygauntlett2679 yes, if I were to handle myself and it wrapped me around my arms and or face it would be very difficult to get the snake off. It couldn't eat me, but it could certainly kill me. The key is to first know how to manage an animal this size and secondly always have someone available to help. I could easily get this snake off of kevin or the other way around. We could get it off ourselves depending on how it wrapped, but if it were to wrap around our my body pinning my arms down and I were by myself. I'd be in some trouble.

    I'm trying to research and learn as much as possible. This was an awesome and very informative video. I started keeping ball pythons, then onto red tail boas and next week I am getting a Burmese Python. It's been 10 years in the making because I wanted to learn all I could about snakes before going to a larger breed. I was afraid of snakes when I held my first Ball Python, but within a week i had fell in love and became addicted. After that I purchased that same Ball Python and learned from experienced handlers like yourself, weather in person or online, how to best do things positively and correctly. Your video is very educational for sure. Thanks for posting. Here's to changing the negative to positive for all snakes. There's no bad snakes, but there are uneducated owners.

    You give great advice. I've had large snakes for years and it takes experience to know the snakes mind set based on its body language. Lots of handling and good feedings certainly minimize chance of getting bit. But there are some days when I know my snakes are simply not in the mood to be handled.

    • @-natasha-3712

    All of my snakes are getting better with the whole "is it food time, or is it handling time?" response...
    I tap on the glass before i open it, To indicate Handling time...
    And if i just open the glass without tapping first, they know its feeding time...
    My ball pythons and my Boa, have learnt it extremely well.....
    If i dont tap on the glass, before i reach in to my Boa's tank, She will shred my arm instantly... Thinking its feed time...
    But the second i tap on the glass, She instantly stops, Head goes down on to the bedding substrate, and she doesnt move an inch, Happily lets my hands and arms go over the top of her, to change her water bowl, Clean poop etc..... She wont even look in the direction of my arms and hands....
    Same goes with my Ball pythons.. if i dont tap the glass before i open it... They instantly come to the glass, waiting for food....
    The second i tap the glass, They just sit patiently, Waiting for me to do what ive got to do... Or to pick them up....
    Once ive tapped on the glass, they give absolutely no resistance, or attempt to flee, when i grab them... they just know its handling time, So just lay there and let me pick them up....
    -- Ive just upgraded my collection, And got a Albino retic.... So from day 1.... Glass tapping training, Will be used too... So hopefully, He learns that quickly...

      Hygiene, space, and safety. These are pretty large cages that Kevin has up there but they are easy to disinfect which is necessary when you have multiple snakes moving through enclosures. They also allow the employees who might not have the most experience to shift the snake to clean without having to risk getting bit.
