  • This is video number three of no bullshit reptile keeping, breeding, and everything in between. In this video, I use a few snakes as examples on how to handle aggressive/defensive Snakes. I'm planning to do a follow up with some larger snakes in the near future, but want to keep these videos limited and focused on specific questions people have asked. Wow thank you bro! This gave me the courage to pick up my aggressive boa. You made me feel more confident and less scared of a bite. And i been able to pick her up and shes a lot more calm now than before when i would just pick her up with a long broom stick lol

      Hahaha, I feel your pain man. My new Jungle Python is such an aggressive and anxious guy. He's 4 years old, 1.8M long and holy crap I've never felt or owned a snake with the strength that this guy has .. first ever snake I've owned that actually makes me anxious. But hopefully this video will help me out too. 😁

      I felt both of y'all I recently got a 4ft guyana red tail boa and the first days I left him alone trying to get comfortable now I'm trying to hold him more which of course he bit me a few times and tries to run away we have a love hate relationship. which also he is my first adult snake the other ones were small and easier

    "Handle like you're not gonna get bit." Heard that from Kevin McCurley, but I don't know if it's his quote. Demonstrated well here.
    Just finished handling 6 afrocks (one at a time) from 2-6 feet in length. I handle them every night except in the days around feeding time. Occasional bite from a yearling, sure, but 90% of the time they seem more focused on getting away than anything else.
    Confident, gentle and consistent handling will bring any snake down with enough work, I swear.

      @@JasonsExoticReptiles That was the best advice for me, it really works. I was scared to pick up my boa, because i was like how am i gonna stop her from striking when shes on me? Tried picking her up without hesitation and spinning when she was getting nervous and shes cool! Thanks!

    i would say i am more scared to get bit, not even just that i feel as thought my energy is very shaken and nervous around them which most likely makes them nervous and pissed i don’t blame them. i think i just need to adjust my vibe and i’ll be fine it’d just really hard for me. thank you for the great video though!

    Tried these tips with my new boa today. It worked amazingly well! It definitely kept her from striking and after a bit stopped trying. I did get snagged while putting her back but the little wench had anchored on my finger and I was afraid I'd jerk her halfway across the room! Second handling session was even better! Amazing how a 4 minute tutorial can make a world of difference for me and my snake! Thank you so much!

    Hey mate, this was super helpful man, really appreciate it. For about 5 nears now I've owned Snakes, they're my favourite animal/reptile. My collection consisted of a Stimsons for the first 2 years, then a spotted python for the last 3 years who was a little snappy, and now 2 9 month old Bredli's. But 4 days ago I went and picked up a new snake, a 4 year old 1.8M Jungle Python. As I said before I've never ever had a fear of snakes what so ever up until I got this Jungle. He's super cage defensive, aggressive and anxious. I hope your methods will help me and this Jungle break the tension that the two of us currently have. It's just the fact that the strength that he has is unbelievable. It's like I've met my maker within my love for reptiles lol. Hopefully I can break him in eventually though. Thanks for the vid man, keep it up. 👍

    Great video! I've NVR had a problem or hesitated when handling my noodles til i took in a rescue recently. She was a 13inch blood python, literally someone put her in a sock tied up& left in a box on the doorstep of a local pet store i frequent. Could NOT believe it. So i offered to take him home & he was soo skinny broke my heart 💔 but I learned quickly that EVERY time i went in to handle/tame her i ALWAYS got bit! After 1-2wks of this i noticed not only with her but ALL my snakes i had this sudden anxiety just approaching the tank! Hated it! Luckily she's doing a lil better but randomly i STILL get bit or atleast struck at. Smh! Dont really specialize in Blood Pythons so if you have any to help her know i mean no harm & am nothing like her previous owners! Thanks

    i have gotten very luck so far.. While owning and handling snakes...
    From the very first day i got them, I have glass tap trained them.... Well, Not so much as "trained"... but they have self-learnt....
    If i tap on the glass before i open it, They know its handling time, or i need to put my hands in to change water, clean poop etc...
    if i DONT tap on the glass before opening it... they know its feed time....
    My ball pythons and my Boa Constrictor have learnt this very well, in quite a short time....
    My boa would shred my arm, if i opened up the glass and just reached in...
    But the second i tap on the glass, She stops what she is doing.. head goes down, and she doesnt move an inch!
    I can put my hands and arms right over the top of her, to reach the water bowl etc... and she wont even so much as move her head in my direction....
    But if i open the glass without tapping.. She is instantly up at the glass, waiting for food :D
    My new baby Retic, is getting the exact same treatment too..
    So luckily, ive never had to deal with defensive-ness etc.... My snakes have learnt the glass tapping very quickly... and dont panic or show any aggression when i tap.. they know its handling time.. and just lay there and let me grab them out...

    This is my 4mo old female anery khal boa. She was a sweetie when I first got her in June but now every single time I go in to get her she hisses, strikes, puffs up, etc. I don't feed her in cage. Once she is out, she is a mixed bag; sometimes still hissing and striking, sometimes calming down. I take her back to her viv on a hook after feeding and she is okay, but even if these techniques enable getting her out, will she ever be a snake like my banana ball who I can have around my neck or who puts his head in my lap and hangs out all day? Do they calm down after this baby/adolescent stage at all?

    Is it safe to say that it's in the handlers best interest to avoid being bitten for several reasons? I can't help but wonder if the endorphins you release as a result of being bitten could be misinterpreted by the snake thusly adding more stress to an already tense situation for the snake.

    What do you feed snakes when they go off rats and mice? I was going to try hamsters but I kinda feel bad cos I used to have them as pets. I was thinking of trapping some grey squirrels (sounds crazy I know, but they are a designated 'pest' where we live), but then got kinda spooked by the parasites they may have. As for pet store food, guinea pigs are too big for ball pythons, but I'm guessing rabbit cubs could work?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles

      Kolor Slayer yeah they are idiots. Please don't go slapping a snake on the head. The snake is only defensive because they are scared. Then you slap it on the head which would be the equivalent of getting punched hard in the face from something 10x the size of you.

I do plan to make another video on General handling techniques make the snake feel most comfortable.

    Most of it seems to be nerves from a snake.
    Especially if they have no where to retreat too.
    I have one that’s a consistent investigator and tongue flicker. Really hates being in his or her viv and being touched. Out of the viv, fine. Getting it out is a game in itself.
    Had the first open mouth hiss today.
    Also, the first session where they got touched and didn’t react.
    Must be scary being small. Everything is a perspective predator.

    Hey Jason, trying to figure if my problem is a phase or an issue. I have a 6 month old burm that is fine to pick up and hold. If my wife holds and I walk by she strikes. The other day I sat by my wife and she struck at her. She a few times even did it at nothing while I was holding her in the room alone. When she was a hatchling the breeder sent her too soon (like two weeks old at shipping) and she wouldn’t eat. I ended up finally assist feeding her a few months before she finally took on and was great. Never defensive and very sweet. The only issue between the nice attitude with random striking is while checking on her one day I was closing her rack and she shot out catching her head in the close. It wasn’t really hard but she shot back in scared. Just wondering if you had any idea on how to correct the problem. She never strikes or bites in the tub or the handler.

      You're over thinking it. Shes just a small snake and striking at heat that she sees around. Sounds like she is still young and nervous. Burms will grow out of it

    Do you use the hook to take out your boas?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles

      I might use it to tap them or to move the head out of the way, but never to pick them up.

  • @liiich6175
    @liiich6175 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    what do you do if the snake if so big i feel like holding it with a hook could hurt it?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mickey Majkic the hook should only be used to maniputle the snake. It should never be used to support the snake. On larger snakes. You can injure them badly so it's best to only use it to move the head out of the way or change their direction.

    • @liiich6175

      Jason's Exotic Reptiles yeah I gave up on the hook since the snakes calmed down enough.

    Do you own anaconda’s? I have a yellow anaconda and she is a sweetheart. She always me to disturb her peace with reckless abandonment and still doesn’t strike. But anaconda’s have that 90 degree bite that most snakes don’t have and there is no hissing or puffing from them when they’re upset and they strike or can bite unexpectedly. So basically how would you pick up an anaconda?

    What about holding it at a point where it’ll limit its strike range in case it does strike?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only place that could be is behind the head which will defeat the purpose of socializing them.

    • @radinsyah1574
      @radinsyah1574 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason's Exotic Reptiles oic. Thanks for the info. I thought there’s a spot where, like with king cobras, the handler can hold them while limiting their strike range. Like how a hook would do on the ground.

    Hello, how often should i handle my 5 year old ( rescued ) Boa Imperator a week to make him calmer? I adopted him, he's here 2 months, but still nervous. He bit me once, but i made the mistake to b too close to a rat ( 2 meters away) and he just shed, so was hungry i guess. - I want to build a good relation with him, but i don't know how often to handle him. - Thank u!

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming you didn't just feed. Every other day for about 5-10 minutes. You need to feel it out. If the snake looks nervous keep it shorter, if he looks comfortable, make it longer.

      @@JasonsExoticReptiles Thank u, but i have a problem, since he has bitten me, i feel scared.. ( my first snake bite) I guess i have to learn not to b afraid. Not easy. I do touch him every now & then, just caress him. But like this it ain't no fun. I did not wanted a display animal. I guess i made a mistake to buy a 5 year old Boa, with bad past. ( he has scares all over) So he does not trust people. He was not handled much. What do u say on this? What should i do? Keep him a while more? And try it out? Yeah, i guess so. Thx!

      @JasonsExoticReptiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bassouljah same approach then but put on a sweatshirt and some gardening gloves. The teeth wint be able to penetrate through. This way you can handle and get to know him with confidence. The more scared you are the more scared he will be. Just the way we move and everything is going to freak them out when we are scared.

      @@JasonsExoticReptiles Good Tips! Cause, i actually would like to give him a chance to have a good home, cause he's been mistreated .. But to never handle him, that's not nice. So i'll protect myself, and i hope that he will calm down, in the beginning i hold him several times with no problem, so maybe he just was having a bad day and the rat so close, just out of shed.. and so on. I have a baby female boa now, could i house him with her? What age she has to b then? Thank u!

    Question: can you do this with bite proof gloves or is it better bare handed?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can just make sure you done apply too much pressure. And most thin gloves will be sufficient. Dont go overboard with the gloves especially for smaller snakes
