In a film that literally starts with the guy that sings this song literally murdering a woman in cold blood on-screen. I was not allowed to watch this as a child and when I watched it as a teenager and saw Quasimodo's mother with her broken neck in the stairs of the church I was like "WhAT???"

Back in the day, I took my young son to see this Disney movie in the theater and sat cringing the whole time. I did not feel like most of the themes and content were appropriate for children. (I did not know the storyline well yet at the time that we went.) We bought most of the Disney movies on VHS, but not that one.

@@bernicemaurice The content, debatable, depending on the child's age. But the themes of fighting racism and injustice, not falling victim to prejudice, etc are absolutely things that children should learn. And in my opinion, also that just because someone is an authority figure doesn't mean they're necessarily in the right, and that you can do evil even if you think it's justified. While Geoff did make his voice low, he absolutely can't bring himself to act the lines. I'm sorry, but there is nearly no emotion in them after the "what?!". Like, he just says "nevermind", he doesn't bring the emotion into it that is supposed to be there. This is the same reason I much prefer Christopher Lee's reading of The Raven. Geoff is a phenomenal singer, not a partiocularly good actor, not with his voice. Physically, yes, he kills it, but he can't act when a character is the opposite of him personality-wise - and Frollo is about as far from Geoff as you can get.

I'd say Frollo has got to be one of Disney's more realistic and scariest villains purely because there are people like him in real life. You're not going to find many evil queens that go around giving poisoned apples to women. You're not going to find a lot of brother-killing lions wandering around. But a "religious man" who is willing to twist his religious beliefs to be "whatever suits me for the moment" while also believing himself to be beyond reproach no matter his behavior? You'll, sadly, find a lot of those around. Maybe they aren't outright burning women at the stake anymore, but there are way too many that would return to that in a heartbeat if they could.
Frollo is scary because he could be a real guy right next to you and you'd never know it until he decides to target you.

Very talented vocals. I think what really makes this song in the original is the juxtaposition of the priests singing the Mass (specifically, the Confiteor, meaning "I Confess"), and Frollo's twisted rationalization for his desires. It contrasts the priests' confession of their sins with Frollo blaming his sins on Esmerelda. The first part, sung by the priests immediately before the beginning of this version, goes:
Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti (I confess to God almighty)
Beatae Mariae semper Virgini (To blessed Mary ever Virgin)
Beato Michaeli archangelo (To the blessed archangel Michael)
Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis (To the holy apostles, to all the saints)
The two contrasting parts build until you get:
    Frollo: It’s not my fault
Priests: Mea culpa (Through my fault)
    Frollo: I’m not to blame
Priests: Mea culpa (Through my fault)
Frollo: It is the gypsy girl; The witch who sent this flame
Priests: Mea maxima culpa (Through my most grievous fault)
    Frollo: It’s not my fault
Priests: Mea culpa (Through my fault)
    Frollo: If in God’s plan
Priests: Mea culpa (Through my fault)
Frollo: He made the devil so much stronger than a man
Priests: Mea maxima culpa (Through my most grievous fault)
Forgive me for geeking out; I just love the use of Latin to tell a deep story that probably gets overlooked.
Thanks for working with a great song from a movie that doesn't get near the credit it deserves!

This is magnificent. I love how you kept in the Mea Maxima Culpa. (for those who don't speak Latin, that means "Through my most grievous fault," and is said during the Mass as a form of repentance, highlighting Frollo's guilt in the eyes of God.) Also, the fact that the guard's appearance was kept a mystery hidden by a sihlouette fits with his depiction in the film (a depiction I suspect to be Frollo's guardian angel giving him one last chance to leave Esmeralda) Also, the fire in your eyes? Man, that really does sell just how much Frollo sold his soul by the end of the song!

I love the way VoicePlay's newer stuff shows off each individual voice. The contrast between them is one of the things that makes them so special, and it's great to see them use it to the fullest advantage.
Layne's arrangements are 🔥🔥🔥and this is no exception, and his drums are just awe-inspiring display of controlled chaos. (Also: "Burn it!")
Eli is simply epic. When his voice gets that metallic edge to it, it elevates the whole piece.
Cesar's voice has an angelic quality, but his acting darkens it to a terrifying, petulant child, convinced of his own innocence.
Geoff starts off as a proud mortal man and ends up spitting pure molten lava like some kind of preternaturally beautiful fallen angel.
    J. None is the perfect complement to the rest of the group: his voice is rich, earthy, and powerful, somehow more *human* than the others in a way that feels just right.
    SO. DAMN. GOOD.

He has his own channel too where he clones himself and sings harmony in 5 octaves. Check him out, Geoff Castelucci ❤

This cover is epic! The arrangement is a masterpiece, LAYNE! The beatboxing here blows my mind and the singing😮! You managed to work it from the depths of hell to the heavenly hights. You are such crazy talented singers ELI, CESAR! I always enjoy seeing J with you and I particularly love GEOFF here on the lead.
The fact that you are such likable guys make this song enjoyable.

That's a very disturbing and epic song! Nice to have Geoff with more of a lead role in a VoicePlay song than we usually get! Well done, gentlemen!

    Oh. My. GODS.
This captures the essence of Disney’s most dangerous villain ever! Geoff’s range is incredible, the harmonies, the costumes, the lighting, EVERYTHING!!!

I LOVE when Layne sings! His voice is beautiful, and I also think the fact that he doesn't sing as often makes me really appreciate the times he does. I also always enjoy when J.None joins you for a song.

This is the first song I heard from them and the guy in the middle who switched to that voice I just died inside

Beautiful, gritty tenor voice. I love his stage presence too, so spicy!
