If you listen to the whole song, he hits on like 5 of the 7 Deadly Sins, and outright declares Hubris in the Devil stronger than a Man line... As you said, Justly Proud thus Sin of Pride. His desire for Esmerlda thus Sin of Lust. Mine and mine alone could argue either Greed or Envy... possibly both. Wrath.... Hmmmm, Burn down all of Paris I'd say fit's the bill. On a serious note though, Hellfire is utterly brilliant and I really think it's one of the best villain songs ever. It's really freaky because Frollo's not a conventional villain; he may very well be someone you know. The visuals fit the song perfectly and it's nearly a cheat to just be listening to it on your iPod without the animation. On an off-topic note, I saw this last night for the first time in so many years. I love how much attention they paid to the architecture, roads, etc because there is a huge focus on them in the book, more than the story itself. Way to pay homage, Disney.

They probably thought it was all good no one complained till after the theatre release ended and after it had got all main critical reviews and awards. When I watched this as a kid i didn't get it i thought he just wanted too be with her and she wanted to be with someone else and that disappointment drove him mad. I sometimes get that but when i look on it i find that i would have had sympathy for him if he had not killed the mother at the beginning.

I never noticed this until I was much older, but I think that the faceless soldier who’s obscured by the light was actually an angel sent to give Frollo one last chance to stop. But as expected Frollo turned his back on redemption and was left to drown in his own darkness…. Damnit Disney you used to be so deep….
In an interview with the VA, this is the general idea of just that: the light upon the soldier is a message from god. Just trying to give him one last out, but Frollo is to obsessed to notice.
Wobbegong, Disney in the 1990s Used to Not be afraid of going Deep and hard on the Drama and Dark Themes and Subject Matter 90% of the time. Disney Animation Today needs to go back to the Renaissance when they were serious of telling original stories and not being afraid of going hard on the drama. That was true Disney Magic, the 1990s was the true Cinema Magic that Disney used to be, but now it seems Disney wants to get rid of that stuff. In favor of live action remakes and cringe worthy sequel franchises, it seems Disney has forgotten why they were even a company in the first place since the golden age of Hollywood.

Just so everyone knows, when the red spirits said “Mea Culpa”, it means “My Fault” which means they wanted Frollo to confess his sins but he instead blames his fault on Esmeralda. Also when the guard opens the door, the light behind the guard was actually the light from Heaven, Frollo was given a last chance to be forgiven by God and to let Esmeralda go but his decision made him preventing his entry to Heaven by turning to the fire.
The one thing about Vollo that stands out strong is how his hypocrisy shines through his fake venture of faith. He uses his faith to smite others; and believes himself above others. A major aspect of the Christian faith is that none are free of sin; and those who think themselves pure or higher in faith than others are the worst kinds of sinners who wear Christ.
So much depth in this movie. God WAS listening. God WAS helping Frollo. As soon as he prayed to the Virgin Mary for help against temptation, Esmeralda was gone. She escaped, and so the temptation was physically not there anymore. It's almost as if God has said "Hey, maybe you are honest. Maybe this really ISN'T your fault, maybe the temptation IS too strong, so here, I removed it for you". All Frollo had to do was literally nothing, and he would've been just fine. But instead he chose to commit genocide and set an entire city ablaze looking for the very thing he sought protection against, and thus died, burnt by the flames that he himself created. As others have said, he rejected his last chance of redemption. I miss when Disney cartoons packed so much meaning behind them. Now an entire movie could be summed up by "Everyone thinks I'm bad but I did this good thing so now everyone thinks I'm ok."
Right?!?! Also the guard covered in light personifying God giving Frollo one last chance is just 👨🍳💋. I miss when villains were EVIL as heck! We need more realistic villains like Mother Gothel and Frollo, because their evil doings can be, and ARE seen in ordinary citizens, which make them infinitely scarier, because they're not malevolent, powerful wizards, they're humans manipulating, lying, and excusing horrid behavior to get what they want.
I mean even this one was pretty nuts by Disney's standards of the time. But yeah, I see what you're getting at (it's because the 3D animators don't have as good of a deal as the - unionised - 2D animators, so all the teams working on new films are forced to make stuff as milquetoast and palatable as possible)

@@camara1194yes! the guard who opens the door to tell Frollo that Esmeralda has escaped is basically god or an angel coming, bathed in glowing white light, to give Frollo exactly what he is praying for - freedom from this temptation. But Frollo makes clear he never actually wanted to be free when he turns the guard away, he just wanted to pray because it’s what makes him feel superior. God sends one final chance at redemption and Frollo calls him an idiot and turns him away.
2:33 The soldier is covered in Light. He represents Frollo's last chance to redeem himself by God. Once he tells him to go away, he embraces Hell's fire and darkness.

Though he made platitudes at the end of this song, his conception of God had nothing to do with mercy; only hatred and retribution. It is the nature of the Hypocrite: as God made us in His image, they make their own God in theirs. One who shares their pettiness and arrogance. It is the true reason for the Third Commandment. For what higher blasphemy could be committed, then to do the Devil's work while waving Christ's banner? Frolo, in the moments of his death, would not ask for mercy. Not sincerely, at least. He was long past conceiving of such a thing, even towards him.
I saw a post where Disney described the villain from Wish as "one of the most formidable foes in Disney history". I immediately thought of what a slap to the face that was to this. Don't make a claim like that until you truly surpass Judge Claude Frollo.

(Matthew 26:41) Sin and the Devil are incredibly strong enemies against man, but only as strong as God allows them to be. When the Holy Spirit is allowed in, you are purged of those things which do not bring forth fruit for God, and as you walk in the Spirit, the Devil will be more hard pressed to bring you down.
His prayer was even answered, just not in the way he truly wanted so he rejected the messenger calling him an 'idiot'. Considering angels are literally messengers of God... Frollo really just blamed God for his failings, was forgiven for it, and spat in his face.
And when you get older, and you see Paris ablaze, you think there ever was a body count in this? People killed, burned alive, even at the part where citizens either got killed by guards or melted alive in scolding liquid metal (Least I assume that’s what it is.)? That Rated G is starting to seem like it wasn’t meant to be.
Fun Fact- Frollo is actually more evil in the movie than in the book. Usually Disney tones down the villains based on book villains. Nope. Not this time. They made him worse. _Which is why I love this movie._
Making Frollo more evil is actually a bit of a cop-out. In the original novelette by Victor Hugo, Frollo IS the priest of Notre Dame. Leaving that detail in would have upset many a Catholic around the world.
But then as someone who chose to be a "servant of God" didn't he choose to be celibate? So it's not really involuntary. He knew what he was signing up for.

This movie has SO many layers! I miss the old disney where it wasn't just fun and goofing around and not only for children. I miss the real stories with deep themes that reached out to both children and grown ups. I miss the beautiful drawings. I miss these difficult two sided characters. I miss the old disney.

A level that featured a religious man who had lost his way in pride and lust, and him coming to terms with it by burning down a whole city just to have a chance to have sex. Which is sort of a good thing, Disney would lose a lot of money if it was all super dark all the time. But I'm sure no one would argue against a few more of these gems.

Apparently in the DVD commentary they note that the animators were worried the studio would push back for it being to dark. But to their surprise both the CEO and head of Disney animation loved it immediately.
I did hear from Mason idk's vid that the one thing they did do to make it a bit more kid friendly is to make absolute certain that Esmeralda in the fire could not in anyway seem to be nude.

Two things: 1) This movie has the most underrated soundtrack of all time. 2) Frollo has always been one of the scariest Disney villains to me, because he's the most realistic. These kinds of people exist in the real world - maybe not exactly like Frollo is in this movie, but there are people in the world who will go to whatever ends they think justify their means, and they will do it all in the name of religion.

When this came out I watched it all the time, but I never caught all of these disturbing themes. I knew he was an evil man, but I didn't know what his motivations were. I think the Captain was replying sarcastically. Either that, or he just humoured his boss, deciding that he wouldn’t pursue the topic any further than he already had.
When I was younger, I avoided Hunchback like the plague, and I suppose it's just as well I did, because this would've scared me shitless. But in the original book, Frollo is a very kind and caring archdeacon who took care of Quasimodo out of genuine pity, but his lustful desires for Esmerelda caused him to spiral down into evil insanity. Also, his death in the book is much less creepy than in the movie. We know what happens in the movie, but in the book Quasimodo simply pushes him off the cathedral to his death. Disney changed Frollo to a Judge to make it simpler and to avoid religious controversy. Just putting that out there

***** I loved this movie. It never gave me nightmares and the scennes with the fire and shadows freaked me out in the best way. I've seen the movie again recently and I only remebered those scennes. Incredible, I loved the fire scennes but I cried in Snow White every single time xD I guess we react in diferent ways.
I agree, Frollo is much more complex in the novel and thus a lot more chilling. When I first read it as a lovelorn teenager, I related so profoundly to Frollo that it made me feel physically sick. :C
Something disney did that was really smart though was having God technically smite him at the end, which took out the remaining controversy and added a lot more depth to frollo's death.
The “Devil so much stronger than a man” part really sums up this song. He’s falling into evil more and more, but he blames it on the devil or someone else rather than himself, saying he’s not strong enough to fight his own actions.
_Technically,_ God did make the devil stronger than man. One of the main points of Christianity that many don't understand is that you *really cannot* fight temptation on your own. So Frollo is correct in that it isn't his fault that he can't fight his burning desires. But God already knows that, and offered to fight on our behalf. We don't have to fight a losing battle if we let someone more powerful that the devil fight sin for us. *Frollo isnt at fault for being tempted. He's at fault for taking matters into his own hands instead of praying for a change of heart.* Sin unfortunately makes us rationalise evil using very real truths. It's sick and twisted, but the only antidote is asking God for a change of heart. The more of the Bible you understand, the more of a masterpiece this song becomes.

On the Quran it's said that on the day of judgement the devil will be there, and say something like: "Don't blame me, I spoke and you chose to listen." Does it say something similar on the Bible? God gave him an oportunity, to learn to be a better person and take actions into it instead of praying with no will to change for the better. Hellfire really is something else. Dark, evil, sinful, twisted and just... perfect. In my opinion, Hellfire contains the real spirit of Victor Hugo's Frollo.

My favorite disney villain. The most terrifying thing about him is that he uses his faith to justify his actions. He asks for mercy... he uses his religion to justify all of the evil that he does. I mean... how many times in history has this very theme played out. Hunchback has so many deep themes that I didn't really appreciate until I was older. The music in this movie brings me to tears every time I watch!
Fun Fact: The Latin chanting is a Catholic prayer for Penitence and Confession. Playing on the scene as Frollo justifies his deeds even as the chanting grows. It's "I confess to Almighty God and to you my Brothers and Sisters that I have sinned Through my Fault, Through my Faults..." If you can see the Subtitles of the Song you'd see just how much the scene hammered his Hypocrasy. How he uses his Faith to Justify his acts as his same faith is literally telling him to Stop this
The best part is the guard is supposed to be a message from God- that He removed the temptation as Frollo asked, and yet still Frollo still pursues it because he never honestly wanted to be free from it in the first place

At 1:50 it seems as though the light is shaped as a coffin lid, or the light one would see if looking down at one. If it was intentional, it looks like he spiritually dug his own grave long ago and is now realizing it. Neat little tidbit.

Back when villains WERE villains. Frollo and Mother Gothel will always be my favorites, cause they were actually evil and their traits, qualities, and ways of evil can be seen in every day humans.
I was raised in a catholic family. Church every Sunday, that sort of thing. Folo's le motif incorporates a lot of Latin lyrics that a lifetime of church-going had made me familiar with. So when I heard them during Hellfire, even if my 8-year-old mind didn't know what they meant, the intent was clear; Frollo is a perversion of organized religion and a prime example of what happens when a "divinely sanctioned" authority goes to your head...

I think if they made him a priest, that would cloud the message you mentioned, because then it would become a bashing of Catholicism in most people's minds, taking away from the core message of self righteousness and focus on the evil of religion. Don't get me wrong, self righteousness can come with the territory of religious authority, but point is that christianity isn't to blame for Frollos behavior, it's he himself. The same character could be portrayed ass Jewish but still be a self righteous bastard.
I like how it starts off pleasant and reverent like Frollo thinks he is, but gradually becomes more bombastic, dark, hellish and sinister- what he really is deep down as the song goes on.

Everyone always says something like, “Frollo is just having the best reaction to a boner!” 😂😂😂 But, it’s so much more than that. Yes, she does arouse him, but it’s not “just a boner.” The thing about Frollo is that he ardently hates gypsies and he thinks they are full of sin. This is wrath. He also considers himself above everyone else and claims he has the moral high ground. This is pride. But when is wrath and pride combine with his lust for Esmeralda, he spirals out of control (as if he wasn’t already). It is simply too much for him to handle. Also, he knows damn well that what he is doing is wrong, but he doesn’t care, for he is too full of himself to care.
It's actually a very important part of the film. The main point of the scene is that while he had a prejudice against gypsies, he developed romantic feelings for one, resulting in him going mad. A part of the film's purpose is to discourage prejudice. Here Frollo feels like something is wrong with him because he finds that he has feelings for a person that he deems to be inferior, and that really screwed him up psychologically.
I think that he does care. Frollo is tortured by sin, conscience, his past, whatever you want to call it, as embodied by the hooded red figures. He feels dedicated to his religion and his god, but he doesn't understand how that omnipotent and omnipresent god could put him in his (self-contrived, sexist and selfish) anguished position. Esmeralda is obviously the object here, to be either possessed by him or destroyed, but as you say his is aware of the 'wrongness' of this desire.
I think he definitely cares. He has never thought he has lived a life of sin. And to fall in love with and desire a woman that he thinks is full of just that makes him start to fear himself. He's confused and praying to Maria to help him, but all the sin inside his head tells him no (It's your fault). So he does care. A lot. He desperately wants to be seen as holy by the eyes of Notre Dame and not sinful at all, and he'll do anything to get it. Even if it means burning down all of Paris to do so.

religion faith and sin are a much more deeper and abstract topic to write songs for. family trauma in art is to me best represented through art pieces than words, u cannot compare two songs when they are about completely different things. disney hasn’t been going for evil evil villains as of lately, they’ve been going for a more relatable route through common family conflicts and concepts. that doesn’t mean it’s bad, if anything it means they’re telling the story wrong. but since we haven’t seen the movie we really can’t determine that yet
for all we know that song is a pre villain reveal song, to make him appear good. which could mean a villain song, an actual one could be in the movie just not shown to prevent spoilers. this song is not fair to compare any of their others works too since hellfire can easily be considered by many one of disneys most well written songs ever
great example of a good upbeat song sung by a villain is tangled’s “mother knows best” vs it’s reprise, ur really able to tell from the songs how gothels intent and mannerisms have changed
Almost like the characters are different with different goals... King Magnifico only cared about the people adoring him. You know, like a lot of politicians do. he didn't actually care about their wellbeing or concerns or anything. He only cared about his image and getting praise.
Hellfire really stuck with me as a kid, the instrumentals sounded so amazing it kept playing in my head over and over again until I found the movie again as a teen
"It's not my fault! If in God's plan... He made the Devil so much stronger than a man!" These lines are simply the best. I can't get tired of listening to them. The whole song is a masterpiece, but this... Oh God, have mercy.
Best Disney movie of all time. The villain was so great because he was too human... and I can understand why Frollo never saw evil within himself, and that's what makes a person like him so terrifying.
I like the comparisons/contrasts between Quasimodo and Frollo's "imaginary friends" as both deal with how they deal with internal conflicts. Quasimodo's comical gargoyles are supportive of his welfare constantly in their own ways, have distinct looks/personalities/desires outside of what they represent for their given roles and may or may not be real depending on the belief that Quasimodo made them up to make up for his lack of actual companionship before Esmeralda. Their music number is more of a light-hearted, jazzy beat that contrasts with the rest of the movie and make a lot of references of media ahead of the time period. Frollo's on the other hand, are all uniformed red beings of foreboding dark ambiguity with no visual differences in their forms, don't interact with him aside from trying to make him humble, vanish just as quickly as they appeared and are clearly a representation of his growing insanity. Basically, a manifested jury to justify his hypocritical beliefs. They only appear in the darkest song piece with a monotonous Latin chanting with imagery closer to the time period.

Dread Baron Eh, Gaston was a nice twist on the normal hero of stories, but there's just something about having a character's motivation be sexual frustration IN A KID'S MOVIE that is just amazing.
He's such a good villain because he's being the exact opposite of what he's supposed to be. His entire trade (if you call it that) is to serve the God and the people, but first and foremost God. He is supposed to try and help as many people get to heaven as possible, and to guide them all along the way. But he turns around and becomes the exact opposite. Instead of serving the people and God, he serves himself and literally states that he's willing to burn down all of paris. The symbolism is quite amazing, as he falls from a priest of God (not that he was ever a good one but whatevs) to a self serving coward. He even blames God, saying that it's not his fault because God made the devil so strong. This movie adds brilliance regardless of who is watching, but I do also like it's last little piece that kind of solidifies that this is not an anti-Catholic movie, when essentially God casts Frollo into the fire when Frollo says that "He shall smite the wicked and cast them into the fires of hell", falls over, grabs the statue on the church, which snarls at him. That's the part that I find takes away any anti Catholic controversy that might have existed otherwise within this movie.
Mines the horned king from "The Black Cauldron" I mean good god, his design was just freaking awesome, and his plans something straight out of a sci-fy movie!

I think Hellfire is unique, it's a perfect villain song. But i sadly don't think that they'll make another song like this. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was the darkest Disney movie, and it was a lot controversial. But anyway, The Princess and the Frog has "Friends on the Other Side" that is a great villain song.
Their older films are mostly all better wuth more universally relevant and applicable themes than those found in recent Disney movies. Other good ones are Beauty and the Beast, the Princess and the Frog, Lion King, Snow White, etc. The villain here is more compelling than usual because he represents something found in real life but taken to an extreme for emphasis and thematic purposes
At the beginning when he is praying, he is looking up. After the "guard" tells him the gypsy is gone and Frollo tells the "guard" to get out, he is then looking down and praying to the "Hellfire". You can watch this 100 times and pickup new things each time. Its amazing. I so miss classic disney.

Tony Jay's performance in Hunchback is one of the greatest voice portrayals in the history of American animation. In fact, it may be the greatest. Frollo's evil is so much more real and palpable than that of any other Disney megalomaniac. He is torn, mentally and emotionally, but remains motivated by hate and the terror of his own sexuality. jkay's portrayal of these conflicts has a subtlety that VA performances often lack.
The song starts in a major key, then he starts talking about how twisted everyone else is, and that’s when it slips into a minor key. This scene is so amazingly crafted.
I think there's a lot of Hunchback in Prince of Egypt although there were less constraints on Dreamworks and so they could go all out with the darker elements (but Jeffrey Katzenberg definitely had to have been taking notes watching HoND because the similarities are just way too strong for it to be a coincidence)

Its not really lust though, its the fact that lust is considered a sin that makes him resent her to an unhealthy level. Blaming her for having a "sinful" body and blaming her for causing him to sin. It wouldn't be a big deal that he finds her attractive if the idea of him even thinking about that wasn't considered a sinful act. But it is a sin so he goes into a crazy shame spiral where he decides he needs to kill her so she can't tempt him.
There's nothing inherently bad about lust, is how people react to it. Both outside people judging others and shaming them and how these same people deal with their own desires.
That is not the message of this song. It's about how repressing your needs and wants while feeling superior to everyone else and then resenting those people for making you hate yourself.
@@lisilein2 There’s another layer to it as well. The chanting by the priests in the beginning is part of the Catholic Latin Mass. They are essentially saying, “our faults are our own, we are sinful, and we take responsibility for ourselves.” Whereas Frollo considers himself inherently righteous and blames his thoughts and actions on the devil and Esmeralda.

@@ninvusoogoar6098 I kinda have a feeling those productions were rushed. Especially with writing. I have heard on film circles the filmmakers for those productions were angry for tight schedules. At the end of the day, Disney only cares about churning out as much content as possible.

On a serious note though, Hellfire is utterly brilliant and I really think it's one of the best villain songs ever. It's really freaky because Frollo's not a conventional villain; he may very well be someone you know. The visuals fit the song perfectly and it's nearly a cheat to just be listening to it on your iPod without the animation.
On an off-topic note, I saw this last night for the first time in so many years. I love how much attention they paid to the architecture, roads, etc because there is a huge focus on them in the book, more than the story itself. Way to pay homage, Disney.

They probably thought it was all good no one complained till after the theatre release ended and after it had got all main critical reviews and awards. When I watched this as a kid i didn't get it i thought he just wanted too be with her and she wanted to be with someone else and that disappointment drove him mad. I sometimes get that but when i look on it i find that i would have had sympathy for him if he had not killed the mother at the beginning.

He’s a pharisee who has a high position in society who tells others that he is more righteous than they are. Im a Protestant, and so i dont believe in asking people in heaven to pray for me, because only Jesus is our High Priest in heaven according to the Book of Hebrews. He receives the prayers and its always in his name.

I never noticed this until I was much older, but I think that the faceless soldier who’s obscured by the light was actually an angel sent to give Frollo one last chance to stop. But as expected Frollo turned his back on redemption and was left to drown in his own darkness….

In an interview with the VA, this is the general idea of just that: the light upon the soldier is a message from god. Just trying to give him one last out, but Frollo is to obsessed to notice.
Wobbegong, Disney in the 1990s Used to Not be afraid of going Deep and hard on the Drama and Dark Themes and Subject Matter 90% of the time. Disney Animation Today needs to go back to the Renaissance when they were serious of telling original stories and not being afraid of going hard on the drama. That was true Disney Magic, the 1990s was the true Cinema Magic that Disney used to be, but now it seems Disney wants to get rid of that stuff. In favor of live action remakes and cringe worthy sequel franchises, it seems Disney has forgotten why they were even a company in the first place since the golden age of Hollywood.
Yeah, his prayer was answered, but he's so deep in his sins that he doesn't realize it. God gave him exactly what he prayed for. All he had to do was give up the search and that would have been the end of it. But at this point, he wants things done *his* way.

Just so everyone knows, when the red spirits said “Mea Culpa”, it means “My Fault” which means they wanted Frollo to confess his sins but he instead blames his fault on Esmeralda. The one thing about Vollo that stands out strong is how his hypocrisy shines through his fake venture of faith. He uses his faith to smite others; and believes himself above others. A major aspect of the Christian faith is that none are free of sin; and those who think themselves pure or higher in faith than others are the worst kinds of sinners who wear Christ.

So much depth in this movie. God WAS listening. God WAS helping Frollo. As soon as he prayed to the Virgin Mary for help against temptation, Esmeralda was gone. She escaped, and so the temptation was physically not there anymore. It's almost as if God has said "Hey, maybe you are honest. Maybe this really ISN'T your fault, maybe the temptation IS too strong, so here, I removed it for you".
All Frollo had to do was literally nothing, and he would've been just fine. But instead he chose to commit genocide and set an entire city ablaze looking for the very thing he sought protection against, and thus died, burnt by the flames that he himself created. As others have said, he rejected his last chance of redemption.
I miss when Disney cartoons packed so much meaning behind them. Now an entire movie could be summed up by "Everyone thinks I'm bad but I did this good thing so now everyone thinks I'm ok."

But Frollo makes clear he never actually wanted to be free when he turns the guard away, he just wanted to pray because it’s what makes him feel superior. God sends one final chance at redemption and Frollo calls him an idiot and turns him away.

Making Frollo more evil is actually a bit of a cop-out. In the original novelette by Victor Hugo, Frollo IS the priest of Notre Dame. Leaving that detail in would have upset many a Catholic around the world.
What makes him such a good villain is that he is realistic and people like him exist, especially the depictions of lust.

This movie has SO many layers! I miss the old disney where it wasn't just fun and goofing around and not only for children. I miss the real stories with deep themes that reached out to both children and grown ups. I miss the beautiful drawings. I miss these difficult two sided characters. I miss the old disney.

1) This movie has the most underrated soundtrack of all time.
2) Frollo has always been one of the scariest Disney villains to me, because he's the most realistic. These kinds of people exist in the real world - maybe not exactly like Frollo is in this movie, but there are people in the world who will go to whatever ends they think justify their means, and they will do it all in the name of religion.
They definitely lack such majestic cheekbones as Frollo, and probably aren’t as eloquent broadway singers either

@@SunnyLovetts No religion is free from extremists, it seems to be a fact of humanity that no matter what belief system we follow, if there are enough of us following it, there will be those who take it too far and become obsessive or use it as an excuse for their actions, their desires, who manipulate it as a means to an end.
The fact that they offset the dark, perverse lyrics of the song with the beautiful chanting is absolutely brilliant. When this came out I watched it all the time, but I never caught all of these disturbing themes. I knew he was an evil man, but I didn't know what his motivations were.

I think the Captain was replying sarcastically. Either that, or he just humoured his boss, deciding that he wouldn’t pursue the topic any further than he already had.
When I was younger, I avoided Hunchback like the plague, and I suppose it's just as well I did, because this would've scared me shitless. But in the original book, Frollo is a very kind and caring archdeacon who took care of Quasimodo out of genuine pity, but his lustful desires for Esmerelda caused him to spiral down into evil insanity. Also, his death in the book is much less creepy than in the movie. We know what happens in the movie, but in the book Quasimodo simply pushes him off the cathedral to his death. Disney changed Frollo to a Judge to make it simpler and to avoid religious controversy.

I agree, Frollo is much more complex in the novel and thus a lot more chilling. When I first read it as a lovelorn teenager, I related so profoundly to Frollo that it made me feel physically sick. :C
Something disney did that was really smart though was having God technically smite him at the end, which took out the remaining controversy and added a lot more depth to frollo's death.
The “Devil so much stronger than a man” part really sums up this song. He’s falling into evil more and more, but he blames it on the devil or someone else rather than himself, saying he’s not strong enough to fight his own actions.
Finally some one who gets what those lines mean.
_Technically,_ God did make the devil stronger than man. One of the main points of Christianity that many don't understand is that you *really cannot* fight temptation on your own.
So Frollo is correct in that it isn't his fault that he can't fight his burning desires. But God already knows that, and offered to fight on our behalf. We don't have to fight a losing battle if we let someone more powerful that the devil fight sin for us.
*Frollo isnt at fault for being tempted. He's at fault for taking matters into his own hands instead of praying for a change of heart.*
Sin unfortunately makes us rationalise evil using very real truths. It's sick and twisted, but the only antidote is asking God for a change of heart.

Frollo isn't in fault for his temptations, but he chose to sin. God gave him an oportunity, to learn to be a better person and take actions into it instead of praying with no will to change for the better.

My favorite disney villain. The most terrifying thing about him is that he uses his faith to justify his actions. He asks for mercy... he uses his religion to justify all of the evil that he does. I mean... how many times in history has this very theme played out. Hunchback has so many deep themes that I didn't really appreciate until I was older. The music in this movie brings me to tears every time I watch!

The best part is the guard is supposed to be a message from God- that He removed the temptation as Frollo asked, and yet still Frollo still pursues it because he never honestly wanted to be free from it in the first place
It's scenes like this that make me think that Disney should do an animated Les Miserables movie.

So when I heard them during Hellfire, even if my 8-year-old mind didn't know what they meant, the intent was clear; Frollo is a perversion of organized religion and a prime example of what happens when a "divinely sanctioned" authority goes to your head...

But, it’s so much more than that. Yes, she does arouse him, but it’s not “just a boner.”
The thing about Frollo is that he ardently hates gypsies and he thinks they are full of sin. This is wrath. He also considers himself above everyone else and claims he has the moral high ground. This is pride. But when is wrath and pride combine with his lust for Esmeralda, he spirals out of control (as if he wasn’t already). It is simply too much for him to handle. Also, he knows damn well that what he is doing is wrong, but he doesn’t care, for he is too full of himself to care.
It's actually a very important part of the film. The main point of the scene is that while he had a prejudice against gypsies, he developed romantic feelings for one, resulting in him going mad. A part of the film's purpose is to discourage prejudice. Here Frollo feels like something is wrong with him because he finds that he has feelings for a person that he deems to be inferior, and that really screwed him up psychologically.

I think that he does care. Frollo is tortured by sin, conscience, his past, whatever you want to call it, as embodied by the hooded red figures. He feels dedicated to his religion and his god, but he doesn't understand how that omnipotent and omnipresent god could put him in his (self-contrived, sexist and selfish) anguished position. Esmeralda is obviously the object here, to be either possessed by him or destroyed, but as you say his is aware of the 'wrongness' of this desire.

I think he definitely cares. He has never thought he has lived a life of sin. And to fall in love with and desire a woman that he thinks is full of just that makes him start to fear himself. He's confused and praying to Maria to help him, but all the sin inside his head tells him no (It's your fault). So he does care. A lot. He desperately wants to be seen as holy by the eyes of Notre Dame and not sinful at all, and he'll do anything to get it. Even if it means burning down all of Paris to do so.

religion faith and sin are a much more deeper and abstract topic to write songs for. family trauma in art is to me best represented through art pieces than words, u cannot compare two songs when they are about completely different things. disney hasn’t been going for evil evil villains as of lately, they’ve been going for a more relatable route through common family conflicts and concepts. that doesn’t mean it’s bad, if anything it means they’re telling the story wrong. but since we haven’t seen the movie we really can’t determine that yet
for all we know that song is a pre villain reveal song, to make him appear good. which could mean a villain song, an actual one could be in the movie just not shown to prevent spoilers. this song is not fair to compare any of their others works too since hellfire can easily be considered by many one of disneys most well written songs ever

I like the comparisons/contrasts between Quasimodo and Frollo's "imaginary friends" as both deal with how they deal with internal conflicts. Quasimodo's comical gargoyles are supportive of his welfare constantly in their own ways, have distinct looks/personalities/desires outside of what they represent for their given roles and may or may not be real depending on the belief that Quasimodo made them up to make up for his lack of actual companionship before Esmeralda. Their music number is more of a light-hearted, jazzy beat that contrasts with the rest of the movie and make a lot of references of media ahead of the time period.
Frollo's on the other hand, are all uniformed red beings of foreboding dark ambiguity with no visual differences in their forms, don't interact with him aside from trying to make him humble, vanish just as quickly as they appeared and are clearly a representation of his growing insanity. Basically, a manifested jury to justify his hypocritical beliefs. They only appear in the darkest song piece with a monotonous Latin chanting with imagery closer to the time period.

Dread Baron Eh, Gaston was a nice twist on the normal hero of stories, but there's just something about having a character's motivation be sexual frustration IN A KID'S MOVIE that is just amazing.

He's such a good villain because he's being the exact opposite of what he's supposed to be. His entire trade (if you call it that) is to serve the God and the people, but first and foremost God. He is supposed to try and help as many people get to heaven as possible, and to guide them all along the way. But he turns around and becomes the exact opposite. Instead of serving the people and God, he serves himself and literally states that he's willing to burn down all of paris. The symbolism is quite amazing, as he falls from a priest of God (not that he was ever a good one but whatevs) to a self serving coward. He even blames God, saying that it's not his fault because God made the devil so strong. This movie adds brilliance regardless of who is watching, but I do also like it's last little piece that kind of solidifies that this is not an anti-Catholic movie, when essentially God casts Frollo into the fire when Frollo says that "He shall smite the wicked and cast them into the fires of hell", falls over, grabs the statue on the church, which snarls at him. That's the part that I find takes away any anti Catholic controversy that might have existed otherwise within this movie.
Mines the horned king from "The Black Cauldron" I mean good god, his design was just freaking awesome, and his plans something straight out of a sci-fy movie!

Other good ones are Beauty and the Beast, the Princess and the Frog, Lion King, Snow White, etc. The villain here is more compelling than usual because he represents something found in real life but taken to an extreme for emphasis and thematic purposes
At the beginning when he is praying, he is looking up. After the "guard" tells him the gypsy is gone and Frollo tells the "guard" to get out, he is then looking down and praying to the "Hellfire".
You can watch this 100 times and pickup new things each time. Its amazing. I so miss classic disney.

Tony Jay's performance in Hunchback is one of the greatest voice portrayals in the history of American animation. In fact, it may be the greatest. Frollo's evil is so much more real and palpable than that of any other Disney megalomaniac. He is torn, mentally and emotionally, but remains motivated by hate and the terror of his own sexuality. jkay's portrayal of these conflicts has a subtlety that VA performances often lack.
The song starts in a major key, then he starts talking about how twisted everyone else is, and that’s when it slips into a minor key. This scene is so amazingly crafted.
This, the Plagues of Egypt, and Friends on the Other Side are the three best animated villain songs out there.
I think there's a lot of Hunchback in Prince of Egypt although there were less constraints on Dreamworks and so they could go all out with the darker elements (but Jeffrey Katzenberg definitely had to have been taking notes watching HoND because the similarities are just way too strong for it to be a coincidence)

I like this song. Although it is, of course, fictional, it depicts how lust can ultimately lead a person into serious sin.

It wouldn't be a big deal that he finds her attractive if the idea of him even thinking about that wasn't considered a sinful act.
But it is a sin so he goes into a crazy shame spiral where he decides he needs to kill her so she can't tempt him.
There's nothing inherently bad about lust, is how people react to it. Both outside people judging others and shaming them and how these same people deal with their own desires.
That is not the message of this song. It's about how repressing your needs and wants while feeling superior to everyone else and then resenting those people for making you hate yourself.
@@lisilein2 There’s another layer to it as well. The chanting by the priests in the beginning is part of the Catholic Latin Mass. They are essentially saying, “our faults are our own, we are sinful, and we take responsibility for ourselves.” Whereas Frollo considers himself inherently righteous and blames his thoughts and actions on the devil and Esmeralda.
