Hardknott Pass, Lake District on Honda Goldwing - 27th May 2023

- Hardknott Pass in Lake District is the steepest road in England with bends having gradient of 33%. The road is narrow and single track. The steep incline, the hairpin bends and the unpredictable surface makes it one of the most challenging roads to tackle. Riding a heavy motorbike like Honda Goldwing with a pillion rider was extremely difficult, but we made it without any mishaps. It was one of our most memorable and breathtaking motorbike rides.
Took a bit of practise but got over Wrynose and HardKnott without dismounting on a bicycle. This took me back so thanks for that.
I drove up it fifty years ago in an old Maxi with a slipping clutch; put it in first gear at the bottom and did not dare to try to change gear until the top. To add to my woes the state of the surface shook the fuel pipe loose and by the bottom all I knew was that i had lost about four gallons, but did not know why. AA Land Rover had to come out from Ravenglass to sort me out.
The bike, the rider and the passenger handled that superbly. Well done to all 3.
Thank you
Rode both passes a few times each time 2 up and with a trailer behind. It makes for interesting riding.
its a bastard of a road, I did it solo on a vfr in the dry, defo wouldn't want to do it 2up or with luggage or both lol, fair play, its nice you can do the lake district and skip hardknott quite easily and you dont miss alot really, it is satisfying doing it though, I found going down way scarier than going up
Respect to both of you.
Thank you
It is after all merely a Roman road. Clearly not the the old Gotthard Pass. Never the less, it is a most Spectacular place. Wrynose also.
I wanted to show a friend this rides difficulty and found your posting. Perfect! You've made the best visual representation I've seen, lovely day it was too.
I've used it dozens of times as a short cut to and from work. It can be gnarly in bad weather on two wheels or four.
Your riding skill is most excellent. Having a clear run is critical - you MUST not stop, which ever direction you tackle it, even more so coming up the other way. Ace ride to you both !
Thank you
Another worthy winner of the Golden Gonads Award!
Thank you
Very well handled and as others have said this shows clearly how steep some of the sections are. I am not a biker but have driven Hardknott and Wrynose on many occasions. The uphill stretch past the stone bridges catches out many who don't realise they need to change down before the bend because they won't have chance on the way out. The switchback on your downhill section looks even worse in a car as it seems that the road simply vanishes. Impressive riding and great shots of the scenery. Thanks for posting this up.
Thank you
Thank you
Well done riding two up on such a heavy bike.
Am impressed and jealous 👍🏻
Thanks! 👍
Fantastic riding on such a heavy bike! Great skill from you and your passenger, you both coped so well with a challenging mountain pass.
Great video thank you!
Thank you very much for the lovely comments ❤
Everyone else says their camera doesn't do justice to the steepness of the road, yours does, pleasant video.
Thank you
A very tidy ride indeed- nice one.
Thank you
Lovely
Thank you
A bit more successful then my attempt at Hardknott hahaha. Cracking!
😂
Very Impressive Awesome
Thank you
Bloody good bit of riding there my friend, you made it look easy when nothing could be further from the truth.
Thank you 👍, my wife was not aware of what was coming or else she might have abandoned me to do it on my own 😂
@@BijuShebin My wife was terrified of going over there in the car let alone on our 'wing.🤣
Been there, done that in camper and vfr800, its a hoot😅
That’s one of a very few videos that gives you an indication of how steep the pass is. Well done.
Thank you
Well done. Did it on a k1600 myself solo. Dont think i get the attraction myself. Too narrow, crappy condition, too slow, too much stopping for opposite direction....Cannot imagine 2up with luggage. Are you desparate to do it again?
Thank you ….We are still exploring different countries, going to Croatia, Slovenia etc this year. Not sure whether we will do this road again on motorbike😆
@@BijuShebin im going to croatia back end of july, down to dubrovic, then ferry to italy and back up through france.
Good riding. Does it help having the low seat or odes it make a difference?
I have not ridden any other bike. Hence unable to comment. I have an airhawk seat cushion -which help with butt pain…
Mallu GW riders, cool. Just came across your video ❤.
I have a 2019 Tour DCT and was looking for some interesting routes
Thanks for the comment. Where are you based? We are in Cambridge

What mode did u do this in Tour? Or Sport ? Or manual ? Cheers nice vid
Tour mode with suspension at two up, as I had my wife as pillion rider
it looks like a dtc wing cos that makes a difference
It is indeed
Inverse camera made it confusing
I've just returned from the French alps nearing the border with Spain where there are PROPER ROADS. This poor excuse is not a challenging mountain pass it is a sheep track , that's why it is dangerous. barren ugly and boring. I was looking to make a quick run in the uk for a long weekend but the choices depressed me.,and don't get me started on the weather The uk is not a biking country , people own bikes(usually far too powerful for their capabilities) but they are useless here. The drivers are not bike friendly or not bike aware. Remember wherever you are in the uk you're not too far from a ferry to take you to europe.
I will agree with your comment. Just returned from a 14 day trip covering Alps, Dolomites, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium, and France. It was a truly amazing experience-wonderful roads, friendly drivers, fantastic views. Wait for our videos shortly…..

We must have just missed each other as I did it same day on my Kawasaki GTR 1400....
Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, it was a very nice day to ride 👍
