Ep 02 The Lake District Chug V The Wrynose pass

  • My Royal Enfield Himalayan lovingly named "Chug" takes on the Wrynose pass in the Lake district of England. We encounter 25% gradients and switchbacks, the engine pulls strongly in the low gears, the scenery is next level.

    Another excellent film, I live in Lancashire and I have been all over the Lake District, but I have forgot how beautiful it is. I think I have taken my access to it for granted over the last ten years or so. Thank you for a timely reminder, i needed one. I look forward to the next episode, thank you for sharing, regards, Chris.

    It's a bleak grimness beauty Sandy lol. I don't really know how else to describe it. My minds eye wonders back to "Hard Times", I can picture how Dickens would view the poor shepherd tendering the lamb on those nasty wind swept hills in the sleet and driving hail. Tough life and as true today as it was during Victorian times. Regardless of machinery, you still have to get out there all weathers with the dog and stock. Lovely.

    I did both passes yesterday, 14/9/2020 having clocked up 750miles in 2 1/2 days, but going the other way. One hell of a workout on my FJR1300 and for my mate on his ST1300. One naked sport bike was laying by the roadside with the handle bars snapped off. Awesome place, which no video can do justice to. Only spoiled by people who think their VW campers are 10' wide and the odd GS rider, decked out in the usual beige uniform complete with fuel bottles, trying (and failing) to prove how great they are. Lovely video to watch.

    Years ago i had an Austin Allegro est 1.3 l ( dont laugh) and we did the Kirkstone Passe and Winlatter pass and bless the old Allegro it was clapped out but she made it up both. however coming back over and down the Kirksone pas she suffered from very severe brake fade quite scary at the time i remember having to stop to let the brakes cool Haha

    Lovely adventure Sandy, I’ve done both of those passes twice, once in a Citroen CX Prestige (a very large car) and again in a VW Polo ( a rather small car) . As good as your footage is it can only convey a fraction of the terror which can be induced when trying to navigate a large saloon over those humped roads. There were times in the Citroen when it was impossible to tell which direction the road was going to take as the long bonnet was pointing skywards and that was all that could be seen ahead. To make matters worse I did it in mid Winter with snow all over the place, talk about hair raising (not a problem in your case). Sorry about that, couldn’t resist. Somewhere on TH-cam there was an approx. 30 minute video taken by a guy who drove a Citroen C6 (another big car) over these passes, if it’s still up it’s worth a look as his commentary is most entertaining. You can definitely feel his relief upon reaching his destination.

    Don't worry about the engine noise. I use an old Armstrong MT500 as my stealth camping bike, they sound like a box of spanners with some nails thrown in.

  • @campfire52
    @campfire52 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those engine noises are always unnerving for me, even when they are perfectly normal. It just takes getting used to though because they are just part of the "character" of an engine. Obviously, Chug is doing a fine job so absolutely nothing to worry about. What is important is that you are having a great time out there and that is all that is important. Those narrow passages will definitely put all of your biking skills to the test though. I will bet you are quite relieved at the end of each day to just get off the bike and relax. Then it is time to reflect on all of the beautiful sights that you have seen that day. Another outstanding video my friend, thanks again. See you on the next one.

    The Old School building in Little Langdale at 02:35 used to be owned by St Aidans Secondary School in Carlisle and usef as a holiday dorm throughout the year. It was an amazing place to stay even as a kid. I'm going back to 1976 though and i doubt it is still owned by my old school any longer.
    One memory was being in bed by 2200 and the teachers being in the pub by 2210 😂. I would recommend a stay at The Britannia Inn, Elterwater.

    Hi Sandy, yep the engine does sound like a bag of nails, yours sounds quieter than mine though!. Air cooled engine with no coolant jacket around the barrel and piston to suppress the noise is what causes the problem or should I say characteristic. Nowt to worry about, just the standard general mechanical noise. Great video, look forward to the continuation.👍
