    1 head of green cabbage
    2 pound ground beef
1 pounds ground pork (or sausage meat--I used turkey sausage)
1 1/2 cups "instant" rice (I used Minute Rice--but you can use regular rice)
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    1/4 tsp onion powder
    1/4 tsp paprika
1/2 teaspoons salt (I used 1/4 tsp and that didn't seem to be enough)
1 large onion, ground with onion juice
2 (15 oz) cans tomato sauce
Remove the core of the cabbage with a paring knife. Place the cabbage core side down in a microwave safe dish. Add 1 cup of water and microwave on high power for 12 minutes. Rinse the cabbage with cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove the leaves that come off easily without breaking. You can cut away more of the core if needed to loosen the leaves. Set aside 3 or 4 of the tough dark green outer leaves for later. To remove the remaining useable size leaves, place the cabbage back in the microwave and cook on High for 5 minutes. Repeat the cooling process.
Mix together all of the filling. Roll in the cabbage leaves. Line extra cabbage in the crockpot. Place rolled up cabbage rolls into crockpot and pour tomato sauce over the stuffed rolls. Turn onto low for 4-5 hours. Enjoy!

I turn my cabbage leaf over and shave the vain thin with a sharp paring knife and it makes the whole leaf roll easy with no V cut out.

We took your recipe and fired it up to the next level of godly deliciousness. This screamed for a spicy red meat sauce with fresh garlic, chopped bell pepper, celery, onion and more seasonings. We poured on a lot of sauce and crocked this bad boy for the entire day! Plain tomato sauce alone simply was not going to do your recipe justice. :)

Thanks for sharing!! Quick tip for getting the core from the cabbage easier. Slam the core down on the counter top. Ten simply cut around the core, and it comes right out. :)

i thank you. ? enjoy cabbage rolls but as a single senior, the slow cooker is my best friend in the kitchen. your cooking it in slow cooker is great for me to try. will freeze left overs if any.

When I make mine I make it in the oven but will certainly try it in the crock pot. I boil my cabbage then use the water from the cabbage and tomato soup mixed to pour over my cabbage rolls. I don't cook my rice and the broth is necessary to cook the rice. I also use sauerkraut on the bottom and in between layers. Love this and was also taught by Croation ladies.

Oh - you will love it! I cooked my cabbage rolls for 1 hour in the pressure cooker. They were the best I've ever made (or, in fact, tasted!) and they were so tender you could just cut them with a fork. No stringy cabbage. :)

The Croation ladies @ the church I went to as a kid, taught us to use sour head cabbage. They also taught me to take thd cabbage leaf, turn it over and take off the top part of the thick vein - making it even with the leaf. This way there is no bare spot in the leaf & it's easy to roll. Thanks for showing it in the slow cooker, I've often considered trying it!

That's a smart way to roll them since your cabbage was small. I'm a widow and live alone now, I'm always looking for recipes using smaller amounts and eating a large cabbage doesn't work. They look delicious!

You said you used more tomato sauce than was necessary, but I prefer my cabbage rolls swimming in it. So I'm going to try this recipe and use way more tomato sauce. However, I would suggest putting a small amount of the sauce on the bottom of the crock pot BEFORE you lay the cabbage leaves, then you don't have to worry about "getting it underneath" that layer. I love your suggestion of putting the extra leaves on the bottom. No cabbage waste! This looks delicious.

i forgot to say yesterday that when you were trying to roll your cabbage leaves, when you put your hamburger mixture on with the measuring cu p you left it in the shape of the measuring cup,, you must flatten the meat out a bit or roll into a tube cylinder shape it will roll way easier for you,, keeping it in a thick clump and then rolling the meat was too much clumped up harder to roll it up that way,,just a tip for ya for next time,, :)

Well done !!!! I love the slow cooker idea.. I just bought one, so I'm going to giv'er a go. I like to use pearl rice, available as calrose, and/or sushi rice, Monarch Pearl rice used to be sold, but went away. I find the medium grain rice is a little 'sticker' than long grain, and helps with binding, and mouth feel too.
    Cheers.

Funny - I just bought a head of cabbage yesterday with the intention of making cabbage rolls today! No time for the crock pot, though - I think I'll try them in my pressure cooker. Cooks stuff in one-third the time. I also use uncooked rice in mine - saves a step and there is always plenty of juice to cook the rice along with the rest of the dish! Great minds think alike?

Duh... Took me this long to realize that I didn't finish what I had to say.
Shredded onion => whack it into quarters, toss it in the Ninja, and give it a couple of 15 second rounds. Done, and with no missing knuckles. I was doing hushpuppies yesterday, wanted chunkless onion in them, and tried it. Threw in some parsley too, and it pulverized it all, perfect for adding to the batter.

Me and the older women in the family use cream of mushroom to add more flavor and to make it creamy and kinda like a sauce when it's done. Plus when you take it out of the oven or crook pot the cream of mushroom has this little crust on top! Yum! :)

A hint.. you don't need to cut out the main rib section. Just trim down the thickest part by scraping it down. Leave your leaf intact. It's much easier to roll! Also, roll the cabbage just enough to cover the filling then tuck the sides in.. then finish rolling. The sides get locked in that way. It'll end up looking like a burrito.

Awesome recipe... Yummy! Just a tip...saw Chef John on Foodwishes make cabbage rolls and instead of butting out that hard piece on each piece of cabbage he just used his knife to shave it down. That way you are left with the whole leaf making it easier to keep everything in and roll them up.

It makes sense to me if the leaves are too small to put less meat inside. In fact the cabbage rolls look better when they are smaller, otherwise they become cabbage burritos. Imagine we make this in Romania with grape leaves, too. They are so small and cute! You eat 10 at once.😄

Great video, but, don't be surprised why your rent or water bill goes up instead of just putting the cabbage head in a pot of cold water. Leaving the water running like that, you need to live in the western U.S. where you have think about your water usage!

    • @CookingAndCrafting
      @CookingAndCrafting  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

lol More people worry about me and the amount of water that runs when I do things than anything else. We have fresh water from the mountains and we pay quite a bit for it...actually, the water is fairly cheap, however, the sewage bill we pay is horrendous. Hawaii will never run out of water. It rains every day. Unless they continue to build at the pace they continue to. But that won't be my worry. I'll be dead and gone by then. Thanks for your worry. It is not necessary. I'm sorry you apparently live where water is precious.
