I understand that you don’t like surveil but this is exactly what I’ve wanted in a Dimir deck since I started playing. A deck that actually likes and utilizes one of those Dimir esque mechanics. Feels very on theme
great content. I bought this precon and I've been playing with it for maybe a month now, with some tweaks here and there, but I do feel like you said in the end, it's not good to lean entirely on that surveil mechanic; it slows the deck to death, and whenever there's a removal on the table, I feel frustrated to have to grind up all over again. The equipment-based approach makes waaay more sense. Thank you so much 🤙
I thought you might've mentioned Sword of Truth and Justice. +2/+2 and then it gets an additional 2 counters when it connects. Pro-blue and pro-white is nice to get through blockers and dodge path to exile and swords to plowshares.
Great video, i bought a bunch of these cards to upgrade my deck! Is there a Cut List somewhere that im missing? if not, i'd love to see one. I'm having a pretty hard time figuring out the last few cards to cut, but still have some amazing cards i wanna fit in. (If im using equipment and draw/discard, should i basically cut almost all forms of surveil?
I disagree with Cut Your Losses and Keening Stone. Both overfill your graveyard which leaves you vulnerable to graveyard hate. On his own, Mirko can't take advantage of 40+ cards in your graveyard. Most of the other cards suggested look like decent choices. Blade of the Bloodchief looks promising.
I am so excited for my Mirko deck. Looks like a ton of fun! My one worry is that there seems to be a ton of graveyard hate in EDH now. Any suggestions for protection from that? Like, seems like every deck with black has Bojuka Bog
we have some instants that counter abilities, like Stifle, Tale's End, but to have that at hand in the exact moment someone plays a Bojuka... Yeah, it's a gamble
Surprised not to see hexavus?! 0/0 that comes out with 6 +1/+1 counters. The first ability is to transfer +1/+1 counters. The second ability is to remove (none specific) counter from another creature and add a +1/+1 cpunter to itself. It's simply a +1/+1 machine to feed mirko but using finality counters as fuel?? Btw if it was killed does it get rezed as a 0/0 or a 6/6?? I lean either way it versatile, but absolutely broken if it counts as a 0/0
Hexavus doesn't buff Mirko, it takes away counters (including finality ones) but it only gives +1/+1 to itself; what it gives to other creatures it's a flying counter (if it couldn't fly, now it can), but Mirko already has flying. And Hexavus is a 0/0 monster, it only gets the 6 +1/+1 counters when it ETB, so... yeah it counts as a 0/0 if you want to reanimate it from GY
I agree that the surveil mechanic shouldn't be the way you fuel your graveyard in this deck, but disagree on what the alternative should be. I don't like self mill cards, or the Entomb creatures. They are all inherent card disadvantage, even the Entomb creatures are sort of card disadvantage if you don't have a payoff for irrelevant bodies (like some sort of sac outlet or anthem or whatever). I prefer discard outlets combined with draw effects, looters especially, and in particular Jace, Vyrn's Prodigy, Magus of the Bazaar and Enclave Cryptologist (zero power). And then if you fill up your deck with even more zero power creatures (like clones for example), you just draw and discard those. You don't even need to worry about pumping Mirko's power.
Agree and I feel like zero-power creatures is the smoothest way to build and play mirko in a nutshell. I'm just not a huge fan of not having a clear game plan as with Doppelgangers you mostly copy your opponents creatures and then figure things out on the fly. Any suggestions to make the deck maybe a little more straightforward? Only thing I can see right now is goign kinda voltron but that's... well, risky.
@@ericmittmann8827 Well, my playgroup is relatively low power level, so I don't have to worry about building in a combo wincon, I can just win by outvaluing my opponents and find a combat wincon through clones or my bigger creatures. If you're looking for a wincon, the shell naturally fits self-mill combos like Thoracle/Consultation but you also get access to Mirror-Mad Phantasm since the deck wants to run clones naturally. Toss in Agatha's Soul Cauldron and Maximize Altitude for easier combo turns. If you don't want to combo off, then you're stuck playing a value game like me. My value plan is to set up an ETB loop by removing finality counters (nesting grounds, Fain, Power Conduit, Sword of Hearth, Soul Diviner, Hexavus) and using a sac outlet (Hell's Caretaker, Phyrexian Tower, High Market, Tarrian's Journal, Fain). From there you should be able to out grind your opponents. My best target for the loop is Agent of Treachery, but there's lots of other good ETB creatures in Dimir, or you can just clone your opponents' ETB creatures.
@@ericmittmann8827 My playgroup is relatively low power level, rarely infinite combos, so my wincon is just out-valuing my opponents until I can swing for lethal with whatever I've cloned or whatever beefy creatures I've got that can get in. My value plan is removing finality counters and looping ETBs. The big one is Agent of Treachery, but Dimir has plenty of good ETB creatures if you can't find AoT or it gets exiled. If your playgroup is more competitive, the shell lends itself well to self-mill combos (Thoracle/Consultation) but you also get access to Mirror-Mad Phantasm as the list naturally wants to run clones anyways. Toss in Agatha's Soul Cauldron and Maximize Altitude for easier combo turns.
@@ericmittmann8827 unless you want to go self-mill combos your options are limited. I went with recurring ETBs via removing finality counters or clones. Agent of Treachery or Gray Merchant of Asphodel a few times will usually lock up a game.
Removing the finality counter with Goldberry (18:12) or any other effects does not stop the reanimated creature from being exiled if it were to die. The counter is just a reminder that it needs to be exiled, but that effect stays present on the object even if the counter is removed. Blink/Bounce effects work as the reanimated creature becomes a new object, so no longer has the Finality effect associated with it.
@@werschweinchen5293 yeah I got that wrong, I assumed that it worked the same as the corpse counters on Isareth the Awakener, and didn't realise that finality counters have extra rules associated with them. Reading the card doesn't always explain the card these days....
This is a great guide, but you talk entirely Way too fast to be explaining things in a semi detailed manner. It's great that you're reading the card abilities and what not to us, but I definitely couldn't have this video play in the background
You should make one of these for all the precons!
I second this.
Mirko with Power Conduit is a must! Changing the finality counters into even more +1/+1s for her every turn is nutty
Hexavus will do the same for just 1 uncolored, doesn't even require tapping the creature.
but Hexavus does it for himself, not for the commander (would still include it in the deck though)
I understand that you don’t like surveil but this is exactly what I’ve wanted in a Dimir deck since I started playing. A deck that actually likes and utilizes one of those Dimir esque mechanics. Feels very on theme
nesting grounds says remove a counter you control. the permanent u target can be any not just your own
Makes it a must have
Hex parasite is a must include, kills planes walkers and removes your finality counters.
The question is what cards just I cut from the precon?

In my opinion I like to play it more as clones, it's more fun XD
yeah, you get the best creature on the board and don't have to pump Mirko at all.
I love the clones with Mirko. My list runs 10 clones and 12 other creatures with zero power.
I thought you might've mentioned Sword of Truth and Justice. +2/+2 and then it gets an additional 2 counters when it connects. Pro-blue and pro-white is nice to get through blockers and dodge path to exile and swords to plowshares.

There aren’t many creatures that can come back from Exile (e.g., Adventure cards), but the ones who can are usually pretty good. 😊

Agent of treachery is great too.
If I surveil 4, does Mirko get 4 counters?
No, it's still just 1 surveil trigger, so just 1 counter.
