It tells a new story with the characters, introducing the Outer Sailor Guardians, plays with new tones and new themes, putting the characters in new trials, shows growth with the characters, raises the stakes, and feels necessary. This is still my favorite Sailor Moon season.
This opening is iconic. It is flawlessly animated and evolves beautifully throughout the season. The crisp DALI version is the cherry on top. I never fast forwarded this.

You see I want you to imagine a show where Greco-Roman gods and goddesses that have intertwined into Japanese and various other mythologies and have been reincarnated into Japanese school students who wear sailor school uniform (ironically called as soldiers since sailor school uniforms were inspired by a naval officer uniforms) that can fit into a modern society without anyone realizing it and can transform and access their powers, all the while people are not able to recognize them even though they are not wearing any masks and can see their faces up close, because they can put others under their divine spell. This show has reference to astrology, astronomy, romance, action, creative concepts, Greco-Roman mythology, Japanese mythology, and other mythologies.

My one gripe with this op (and it's very minor) is that Mars is put first in the Sailor montage instead of Mercury who came first. It's the little things that keep me up at night!

As an animator, I would say it's an animation-related choice to break up that scene so it flows better instead of everyone just flying in a straight line. I would be interested in your source for this.

She appears first in the presentation, before Mercury, she appears first in the rising flight, after Naptune and Uranus who were upper on the Greek statues scene but before Mercury again. Then, in the spiral attacking scene, she is first again. It's interesting because Mercury is, traditionally, the second Sailor who appeared and the first chosen out of the big four with Mars character being always after Mercury but developing over the seasons and taking the place of Mercury in the narrative...just my opinion....but...what do you think?
