Alas, Essaouira has changed so much since the 70s. It’s now inundated, to put it mildly, with tourism. Most the little Berber shops and kiosks are now latte cafés and trinket shops. I used to camp off the beach which is now a five star hotel. The young , as this vlogger is, is oblivious to when traveling wasn’t visiting globalized tourist venues. The ramparts, by the way, was where Orson Welles filmed scenes from“Othello”. The sea off the ramp as is where my deceased friend Chris, an American novelist, and I sailed in his self made sailboat, drinking a few Stork beers. One of the deserted islands was once penal colony. And there is indeed a castle in the sand, between Diabet and Ess. It was a sultan’s palace now half submerged at low tide and listing. Apparently, the song, Castles Made of Sand was written before he arrived but it is fitting and perhaps prophetic.
I came to Essa which is its popular name among locals and fans in spring of 2016 and ... stayed for three months. Essaouira is an incredible and magical place. I walked with a group to Diabat. One can walk along the beach almost the whole way. Back then there was still a lot of great LIVE music and I was there twice during the Gnawa festival, 2016 and 2018. It becomes a different story once one becomes one with a place. Travel happily!
So beautiful The fresh fish The sea urchins are amazingly delicious This place looks like Monopoli southern Italy in the Puglia region. It’s so interesting how much Arabic influence southern Italy has in its architecture. Marocco looks dreamy I want to go ❤
That horse took me be surprise waking down that dusty path! The catalogue of places in Morocco is going to be extended a little further over the next weeks. Tangier next, a real highlight for me!
@@ChrisKermis I ve been to Agadir a number of times even had a hire car last time I was there in 2022 - Made the mistake of not going to Essaouira ....Will definitely go next time Im in Morocco
Thank you Chris! Am pla nning my trip to Morocco and you have become one of my main guides as to where to go. Think I better add Essaoira to the itinerary....

great review , thanks to the one you did about Agadir , I went loved it back to Tenerife to plan next holiday to Essaouira hehe but how much was the lobster lunch ?
Glad you liked it! I preferred Essaouira for its smaller town vibe, it’s really different to Agadir! I don’t remember exactly how much the lobster cost, but I think it was somewhere around 40 Euros. A lot cheaper than having something like that at home and it was genuinely really good! I made a food video of Essaouira on my other channel Nosebaggin if you want to see more from there
Just found your channel (subbed), watched all Morocco vids, They've been really useful in planning for 8 day trip to Morocco next week.. Nice one Chris, thanks for sharing. atb

@@ChrisKermis I am there right now. They already starting painting my face on walls and worshipping the places where I ate Nutella-crepes, tajines, couscous and seefood. And don't forget to buy tonburino-chocolate with Dates and walnuts. Content-creatures will love it!
Really impossible to say, it depends what you personally are looking for - I love both! Essaouira is more relaxed, walkable and a great seaside vibe. Tangier is a bigger city, vibrant and with interesting history. Both have great food in their own ways and I made videos of the food in both on my other channel. You'll have an amazing time whichever you choose!
I think the bill came to around 60 Euros or so for the lobster, sides and a small additional course, shared between 2 people. Cheap by European standards but of course more expensive than what I would normally eat in Morocco. Please don’t make assumptions that price is no limitation to me, that was a one off treat.

Can you use usd $ most places or is it essential to exchange to the Moroccan 🇲🇦 currency ?

Essaouira-city is Amazigh ⵣ and one of the oldest city in Morocco ،By the way, the influence of the Jews is very large in this city

60 Euros is a lot. I´ve visited Essaoura multiple times and I wouldn´t pay more than 40 euros for that. Though it looked delish. @@ChrisKermis
