  • IN THIS VIDEO: I'll answer a question I get asked a lot: Can you use oil and cold wax over an acrylic painting ?(Yes !) and can you use oil and cold wax on canvas? I'll show you how I'm using oil and cold wax to enhance one of my floral abstracts to add texture, body, richness of color. Please forgive the sound on this one. The day I decided to turn on the camera in the studio, was the day I forgot my mike at home.

    I believe originally that "oil over acrylic" was pretty much given the OK for oil over very thinly applied acrylic type wash as sort of an under drawing & not intended as oil over heavy acrylic as directly related to permanence of adhesion. Acrylic being basically plastic. As an example try painting a thick oil paint impasto on a plastic container lid and allow it to dry completely & notice how it can easily be peeled off in one piece. I imagine the painting of oils over heavier acrylic is OK for painting for "today" but, not for enjoyment by future generations w/ regard to having any sort of archival quality. It would be a painting conservation nightmare. As a long time conservationist I personally would hate to attempt to conserve one. But, it is honestly not my job or my desire to tell artists how to create their respective art. Just mentioning that it's always best to try to adhere to time tested/approved archival technique.
    That having been said, I do like you work and only have educated questions about permanence.

      I wonder if different acrylic mediums over a heavier acrylic "plastic layer" would help with adhesion. Consider matte medium or something with tooth vs regular paint, then lay a thin alkyd or linseed oil wipe to offer an oil-friendly surface. This might be an area for companies like Golden or others to create a product. Interesting challenge as we explore mixed media.

    Andrea - this is the first I've encountered you and your work. I LOVE the video - your spontaneity and your engagement with the camera made me feel like we were having a one-on-one conversation, that you were sharing your process as if I was watching you in your studio. Hearing your thought process come to life kept me wanting more. Aside from that the piece is beautiful and I look forward to seeing more of you and your work!

      Thank you so much for that detailed comment. It really helps to know how these videos land, and what you described was kind of what I was hoping for. And glad you liked that painting :)

    This video was really useful after watching a few other cold wax medium videos focussed only around using oil sticks and paints. You have answered one question I had in relation to using CWM over acrylics. It's good to know it works as long as you use oils and/or other suitable markers over the top. I love this floral piece and the way you approach your painting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    Total newbie here. My understanding of this process is that, on top of an acrylic work, you put oil paint mixed with cold wax. I enjoyed the video but may have to watch again, or watch some of your others, to clear my confusion. Thanks for your guidance.

    • @artistspace
      @artistspace  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You got it right. You can add oil and cold wax on top of acrylic but not the reverse

    Hey Andrea. New subscriber here. Your work is really cool looking. Love it! Question…. Have you ever used water soluble oil paints under the cold wax? And do you use Dorlands? Thanks. I also love soft pastels. Maybe use those with water or alcohol for an under painting. Or crush up old skinny soft pastels to use as a pigment all crushed up in some clear wax…oh the possibilities. Lol. 👍🙏🏻🎨🖌👩🏻‍🎨🤗

    • @artistspace
      @artistspace  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve only used water soluble oil paints a few times with CWM and it worked fine. Yes the possibilities are really endless. Have fun painting!

    Thanks for the video. As I understand it cold wax over gloss acrylic is a little sketchy in terms being archival. Less so but still true with matte acrylic. Highly archival with acrylic gesso, and with very very thin washes of acrylic. I’d imagine if one combines the use of a rigid panel with gloss acrylic that is sanded that is pretty archival.
    Something I’m trying to wrap my head around is if cold wax is somewhat okay on top of matte acrylic, can I collage a matte acrylic skin within layers of cold wax.
    All of my comment is just from a non-conservators research, so I may be wrong.

    • @artistspace
      @artistspace  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hiya, yes definitely more archival if you sand the acrylic down before adding the oils and cold wax 👌

    • @artistspace
      @artistspace  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And you definitely can’t add any acrylic paint or medium once you’ve applied your cold wax. Trust me I tried once and it was a bubbly disgusting mess. Not salvageable either

    Acrylic primer 1st ..will it work over the wax canvas coating. Then one does acrylic with xold wax or oil over acrylic but if using oil wax may not work ovef the acrylic wax ..or akso may not work with acrylic without tge acrylic water basdd cold wax. So bit confusinh.

      Do not use acrylic over Gamblin cold wax no. Acrylic can be the base under painting only

    what about taking Gamsol with Cold wax medium and add Galkyd Lite (10-20 %) and maybe a pale cobalt blue or terre verte color and brush/wipe it on as a glaze to give an overall sheen. the Galkyd Lite to add a little gloss and richness back into the wax.

    • @artistspace

      Hi Sarah ! I use a little glazing medium but often just use water, especially when I know I’ll be deepening the color at the end with oil or oil and cold wax
