Create Luminous Layers: Large Abstract Demonstration part Two

This is part two of a demonstration on a large abstract painting in oil and cold wax. I'll show you how veering away from my original intention for the painting gets me in trouble, how I dance between chaos, structure, breaking things up when it looks rigid, or forced and how I add luminosity to surfaces that have lost their luster along the way. Hi Andrea, I really appreciate your video. Also love your work. Thank you 😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm glad you're here
I read that gamblin cold wax is 100% lean. Is it not mixable with acrylics?
@@jaelamaduin7471 no it’s not
how do you clean
wow this is such a great idea!I always have some leftover paint at the end of the day!
Go for it!
I'm so excited to find this video! I just bought a whole set and am primarily an acrylic painter but wanting to add more interest etc...to my top layers. I also love your acrylics and cold wax videos too!
@@TracyMiller-r3u so glad you found me 🤗

I love your explanation of your process and the balance of intuited, and logical which is how we work at our skill level. Thank you Andrea so helpful as I love the CWO with your style.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting 🥰
Love how you convey your enthusiasm as an artist. I am such a newbie and finding experimentation hard. Tricky balance learning how to work with materials via tutorials and letting go to follow my own process.
Thank you and keep experimenting but also don’t hesitate to take classes. It’ll really help you find your process faster and avoid wasting paint 🫶🏻
I’m curious if you mean the same thing or something different between translucent and luminosity. You used both terms…I think synonymously. Do you see them as the same thing?
It’s more or less the same thing
Love You
Brilliant Andrea! Thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this video. Much love and peace from London UK ❤
You’re welcome 👍😁
Fairly new to using wax with oils and now that I know I can use wax with acrylic, I want try it. I too have been binge watching. Love your videos and your teaching style.
Oh thanks so much Candace ! Have fun with it
You lil Basquiat 🤗. Love them freeshapes I’m playing with watercolor
Love this!!❤
Have you tried taking an electric sander to old paint?
@@mariakalogerasarch2170 not yet but I’ll be trying that
@@artistspace It’s be a shame to scrap those big beautiful wood substrates : )
@@mariakalogerasarch2170 totally agree and they’re not cheap
@@artistspace Exactly! I look forward to seeing your new piece progress. Onward! : )
My normal way of attacking too much texture on old acrylic work is to get out the oribital sander! Alternatively use a single layer or two (if nec) of nothing but cold wax to smooth it out if it's not TOO high relief. Marble dust/calcium carbonate mixed with wax also works. Latter two more for oil and cold wax works. Just thoughts.
Th trouble is this is old oil paint. Not sure the sander will work. But yep I know those other tricks 😁👌
So great how you're delving into the nuances of colour mixing Andrea!
Im excited about this course !
Hermoso
I love the process, I love the way you verbally explain your artistic thought process! You help break down the why? I also love the mark making, so cool. I’ll bindige watch you today thank you! Ps you remind me of Pamela Caughy that’s a huge compliment!!!
Hi and thank you for watching and commenting 🫶🏻
Thank you! Recently discovered your channel and am enjoying your content. May i ask how long it takes before you can work over the areas where you used the citrisolve?
@@Sunshine2Moons it dries very fast. Wait an hour or less and you should be good
@@artistspace thank you!
Lovely pretty, soft painting Andrea. I am about to start a 48”x48” cold wax and oil on board for my daughter in laws stairwell. I have never done a board this big and am a little nervous. I have no room to work on it upright like you do. I’ll have to work on it on a large table. But I suppose I can lift it up and prop it against a wall to look at it every now and then. I anticipate it will be physically challenging. By the way, you always look so elegant and coordinated in your soft pastel clothes.
@@jenfleming9412 good luck !
@@jenfleming9412 I’d definitely encourage you to work small before working big !
@@artistspace o I have been! Been sneaking up on it .
Hi! How do you prevent the paints from smudging after? For example if you were to sell and ship do you protect it with something? Thank you!
You wait for them to dry and that’s about it
Would you talk about color, and how you choose your particular color combinations. Is it deliberate or intuitive, or a mixture of both. It seems that we work in a very similar way, but your colors are way more vibrant. I know you use very bright and sometimes neon colors, but the beauty of your work is that none of your paintings end up garish or to bright. they read as rich and calmly energized.
Thanks Arline. I’m using a combination of intuition and color theory knowledge to make decisions ☺️
Choosing color is a very vast subject. I have a whole new online course called the skilled colorist coming out next week where I talk through pretty much everything I know and use
@@artistspace Thank you. Color has been so frustrating for me. I could definitely use some inspiration.
7:36 pinks layers
Radiant White. Why?
Because it’s a very bright white
Where did you get the jumpsuit? I love it.
I found the jumpsuit! I have it but 3 sizes too small. Maybe I'll lose weight.
Get after that blue thing! Love it - how fun!
Is it possible to show your palette? So we can see you mixing wax and the paint? Mixing colors.... etc
Watch some of my other videos to see that ☺️
From beginning to end so well explained Andrea - and so inspiring to watch the bold transformational process of the original painting - wow! thank you.
You are so welcome!
Please mute the music. On some phones/laptops it is louder than the narration. I do not understand (and I am happy to be taught) why people put music onto and above and with a spoken narration. When we read to our children at bedtime we don't put music on. When we're reading out Harry Potter, when we have dinner with friends or have them around do we not allow them to speak unless there's music on? in normal conversation you don't have music as well. It certainly is not common when it's a teaching dynamic. Adding music creates competition of sound. If we go to a concert do we want to turn to the audience and say please talk while we are playing this lovely piece of music?
Thank you for your feedback. Please understand this is a free learning resource for you
thanks, Andrea!
Oh, so enjoyed watching you working. Love your colour choices too. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful process!
hi Andrea, I am new too your channel. I really appreciate the "realness" of your teachings. I like, that you explain your own process, so one gets to understand, why you are doing, what you are doing. It is so helpful, as I am a self-taught artist. Thank you much for sharing your experience so openly. It's a great inspiration and encouragement for me. ( by the way I live in the South of France - in the Ariege ) merci - et bonne soirée!
Wonderful feedback Merci ☺️
Dear Andrea, what is the best way to seal a mixed media canvas where I have applied wax in some places? ❤ And could I do a resin too??? 🫶
Unfortunately I don’t know anything about that
Paper seems like a strange material to paint on. How do you display this artwork, or do you?
I either mount it to a board or frame it in a floating frame
thank you for this inspiring video. It encouraged me, as I find myself in similar situations - and then have a habit of loosing confidence and giving up on the painting.
I’m so glad you’re encouraged. Don’t give up on the painting. It’s part of the process!
I like the way this artist takes risks and is not attached to the work until it is completed
If I use Winsor orange, sap green and dioxaziine purple as secondary colors will it be right?
The quintessential beauty comes through when you add the Andrea touch
Thank you !!!
I love watching you work Andrea, the colours are beautiful :)
I’m so glad ! I thought I had edited so much more on this very long video and only realized lots of edits weren’t saved till it uploaded!! Happy you enjoyed it 🥰
I love how you work and tell us what you’re thinking and why
Glad to hear it !
Hello, can you apply more layers of oil paint over cold wax, even later on?
You just add them ☺️you can use any medium with them
That is a beautiful painting. I loved it before you put the transparent coat down, but then, I loved it even more at end of first day.
Hi Jen, very glad you think so ☺️
Thank you for your wonderful video's!❤
You are so welcome!
So good to watch you work and think things through. The painting on the left looks like an abstract landscape if you turned it around. Love your colour schemes Andrea.
Glad it’s helpful ! Yep that one on the left became an abstract landscape
I love how bold you are with color
