Yesterday, on Christmas Eve, I took an impromptu hike around Asan Beach Park. I went looking for a cave that had alluded me in the past. I found the cave, but unfortunately, it was blocked off. Afterward, I ascended the steep trail to the summit of the hill for a fantastic view of Fish Eye Marine Park.

I made that crawl to the back side of Asan Hill many times in 1969 when I lived in Asan Navy Hospital Annex. Great place to snorkel there.

I thought I’d share this story with your audience. My mother, an indigenous Chamorro woman was born in March 1944, just four months before the island was liberated by the Americans of whom deserted the island and left it defenseless. Mom was born in a cave somewhere in Agaña - Hagatña out of fear by my grandmother that the Japanese forces would kill her by bayonet as word got around that fair complexion babies were to be exterminated. As mom and her family have the mestizo mix from the Flores and Torres side of the family. Why this all matters? Its a story not many Americans have to share and it’s what makes Guam unique.

Sounds like you are very grateful for the Americans who liberated the island from the Japanese who at the time would have slaughtered every single Chamorro.

Merry Christmas and Thank You for sharing! Born and raised on Guam from the beautiful village of Malesso and have never explored that part of Asan so it was nice to watch your video.
When you get a chance if you haven’t already, go down south to Malesso and check out the Pries Pool or Famacun Pale(Chamoru Spell Check) as we call it in Chamoru. Also Tinta and Fa’ha the 2 massacre sites in the village from the war. You’ll enjoy the trek and hikes.
And yes, that was a Coconut Crab or as we call it, Ayuyu!
    Happy Holidays 🤙🏾🇬🇺🤙🏾🇬🇺🎄🎄

I don't know if they're blocked off, but there's another cave at the back side water line facing Piti bomb holes. It's just a walk up from the exit/entry of the cave you were observing. Also the wider trail behind the public restroom is much safer. Takes you up then splits to trails that will take you to the area where I believe they landed the small aircraft, and also a trail that goes down to the monument near the beach. Pretty good all around walks.

You could have easily taken the wide path up (from the West side of the park), then taken the stairs (with railing) down the west side of the hill and the Pill Box and beach. You definitely have a knack for difficult treks! LOL And yes... that was a small coconut crab, and they are still taken and eaten on Guam. Currently, there are measures in place to protect the crabs and they must be a certain size. It is illegal to catch any crab carrying eggs.

@@tayloredstory8241 you can eat em its not againts the law. However, there are locations on island where you arent able to harvest them like on Naval Base.
