Korean Air flight 801 crashed down on Nimitz Hill in Guam in the early morning hours of August 6th, 1997. Out of the 254 people on board, only 15 survived. Today I walked to the memorial near the crash site.

Never Forget!!! I had the unfortunate detail/duty as a Navy DOD Police Officer at Big Navy to guard the refrigerated trucks full of bodies that emitted the stench of burnt flesh emitting from the refrigerators along with witnessing the aftermath of the actual crash site. What a horrific and sad time for which I will never forget and May God Bless them all that perished." Amen!!!

My dad was actually called in as part of the crew to go when the plane crashed and to go in and check for survivors and help pull bodies out. The most devastating thing (to him) that he told me he saw was in one seat was the charred remains of a mother holding her baby in her arms as if trying to protect it. I remember that day cause my dad left to work real early, and I remember he came home really late to take a shower and change before heading back out. He didn't actually tell me about what he saw until I was in highschool as I was still in Elementary school at the time.

I recently found and have watched some of your hiking videos of Guam. I lived up on Nimitz Hill in 1962 when i was seven years old. We were hit by Typhoon Karen in Nov. of 62 it's amazing how much the Island has changed. I made trips to Cocos Island, Spanish steps and Talafofo falls. I had heard that a Japanese soldier had been found sometime after we left the Island. Keep the videos coming I enjoy them.

1997 was a rough year for Guam... Apart from the Korean Air Flight 801 crash, we had a devastating Typhoon hit that same year in December. "Typhoon Paka"

I was in Seattle attending college at Seattle U when the Korean Air plane went down. I called my mom to go outside our home in Barrigada Hts to see the smoke billowing over the mountains. Many of those that perished on the flight were honeymooners flying in to spend their vacation.

Love your channel. Thanks for posting this video about KE 801. How long of a walk is it to the memorial from somewhere that I can park? Visiting Guam soon and would like to go pay my respects. Thanks again!

I left guam the next day or two. I remember waking hearing the radio dj talking about it thinking it was a joke but when I stepped out the house I could see the helicopters. I lived by ordot dental clinic. One of the survivors was a little girl. Maybe 7 yrs old or so. There's a reenactment of the flight with info from the black box here on TH-cam

I came back to Guam on my second tour, just after the crash, many of the people that workered for me were told to help with the bodies and clean up, they were scared and never the same, it looked like a bad war zone I was told by one 😔.

What you called decorations looked to be food offerings in Buddhist tradition.

It's possible as Guam is a huge tourist attraction for majority of Asian, but Guam itself, our people are mainly Catholic.
