  • This video is of turning, boring and machining a steel hollow bar into a bail arm part for a CAT 657 Scraper tractor. This shows turning down the outer diameter, machining and boring bar ends for weld prep using our TM-26120G centre lathe.

    Watching these older videos I think "Why isn't he using the..." and then I remember that wasn't a thing yet and it amazes me even more, how far you have both come in only a few short years. Well done and many more years to come.

    Viewing these older videos shows how much Karen's videography and editing has improved. The viewing angles, zooming, slow motion, time lapse, sound etc. have become much more sophisticated and professional IMO. There is nothing wrong with these but her current videos are far superior to the "standard" videos on TH-cam. Kurtis's skills are always impressive and not being a machinist, I can't find room for improvement. His work is always top quality and professional. Together, your skills produce a wonderful, educational and entertaining video product I enjoy watching over and over. Thanks!

    I mentioned this once before. Seems your older vids are the ones that have music.
    These are so much more enjoyable with just your narration or the machine sounds.

It's millwrighting so your videos share a lot to do with it, machining is always fun and seeing the metal turn into a functional part is probably the coolest about it.     Great content I love to watch the chips fly. I am a 34 year tool maker and it is great to see how other country's do turning. I work with a lot of carbide and hardened steel as well as brass and soft steel. I make dies for cold heading. The company I work for started Torx Products in Rochester Indiana. Keep up the good work.

    I use to work for a company and did machining on a daily basis with tolerances of +-.0002”. We used diamond grinding wheels. 600 grit and 320 grit. I find it calming to watch you machine as young as you are. You must of started young. Thank you for putting these videos on TH-cam. Thank you Jeff K

    Nice job, videos are great. You'll have to take that tailstock chuck apart for 'maintenance' and show us how its mounted to the MT arbour.

    I’m guessing that bore radius was cut freehand? Surprising how good you can get em with practice, though haven’t been on a center lathe in 14 years so mine would not be to good 😂 lol

    So do you need to polish the external surface of the ram? Is the final cut smooth enough for the seals integrity? Seems that it should be ground to a final diameter.

    So do you do on site instalation? I notice all your stuff gets strapped onto a pallet and shipped or you take it. I was just wondering what happens after that . Do you just deliver the parts and someone else assembles them or do you assemble and someone else installs

    how is the chuck fixed with the live center? I have to turn some big tubes/pipes externally and was lookig how to work with the live center

      Hey mate, Yeah have made tailstock chucks for each of our lathes. Yes more rigid, quick setup on some jobs, also have an independent 4 jaw tailstock chuck for those odd shaped jobs.

    Kurtis, will this be site welded into the other component parts of the bail arm or is there a part 2 on the way? How do you get the critical dimensions of these parts?

      Hey Mark, the customer sends us a drawing with the required specs and they fit it in their workshop in a pre-made jig for bail arms as they are a high turnover component on scraper fleets. Sorry no part 2 this time, maybe one day! 😎👍

    steel is now a crazy price in Au, Alu abt the same as in 1990 ,6000 tonne, where do you buy 4140 and bisalloy and Valoric hollow bar without being screwed over and where do you buy tooling, inserts etc, would appreciate guidence here from anybody

      Hey mate yeah you're not wrong just got an email from a supplier that steel prices are increasing 5% soon. We get alot of our material from hydraulic steels Australia. Also use Vulcan Plate. We have high volume so do get looked after with pricing. Get in touch with Arthur at Livetools in NSW for all your machining tooling! 😎👍

    You never show how you calculate your final measurements for the bevel for welding prep. It has to be exact since you have an end product measurement . I’m quite certain you don’t guesstimate it.
    Also wondering why you haven’t built an easy rest for when you are using the the special portable line boring equipment? You said you put your hand on it to reduce the vibration. Am I missing something?

    FFS why do boring bars ALWAYS have to be made so you can barely get centre height on a manual machine? Seriously I've never used one that you didn't have to pack to the top of the tool post!
