A 7 year old me spent an entire summer scouring the yard for change, every single day. I was convinced that I would find money on the ground. And I did! Every few days, there would be at least a quarter. After it rained, there was LOTS. My grandparents were leaving money for me to find, but O didn't know that. Filled up an entire three liter bottle of Adirondack orange soda with my findings and a week before school was due to start, gave it to a horrified bank teller who turned it into about 50 bucks. So off we went to the K-Mart, where of everything on the shelf, this was the first brand new video game I ever bought with my own money. Yes - I beat it the next day, and it took me a couple weeks to figure out you could also do a Donald playthrough. I didn't care. It blew me away then, and blows me away now.
My older brother and I stayed up all night playing coop. It's a good memory. My brother was in high school. So he didn't play games with his little brother me as much as we used to.
My favorite game on the platform! Got it as an xmas gift in 1992, and it's been someone of a tradition to replay it on xmas... Check out the JP version, it has some changes in level design and additional enemy sprites.
When I was child, I saw this Sega Mega Drive game's covers and I begged my mom to get this game. She said: "Ok, we will see if we can get this game for the Sega Mega Drive". During a visiting to an electronics store which has a sector for game consoles too, my mom bought that game cartridge and after arriving home I happily tried out the game. I really like the most of level music and the simpe, but good mechanics for both Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck's magic cape. It's great this game is also available on Sega Mega Drive Mini, I will sure play again on the good mini retro game console. 🙂
The SEGA's in-house trilogy for Disney on the Genesis was amazing (Castle, Quackshot and World). Still suprised Disney hasn't released a collection like they did for Aladdin/Lion King/Jungle Book.
Wow, seeing this game for the first time the graphics do look pretty great, even for today. I would imagine seeing this in the 90's on a big screen would be pretty exciting.
Seeing the cover on the video reminded me of it on big posters all over the stores when I was a kid. It was really cool to imagine playing like the cover art with both characters in one game!
I hope that games like World of Illusion, makes a comeback one day with a sequel. Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio and Golden Axe get another sequel the chances might be high, that Sega announces another partnership with Disney, to revive those IP´s.
I always felt that the Disney games on the Genesis were stellar. Even though I was a teenager in my Genesis days, I always enjoyed the Disney games. This one was no different. It's one of the best.
In general the Disney of that console generation were amazing, you hardly could find bad Disney games during that time, perhaps some of the games based on the Disney TV shows like Darwing Duck for Turbografx.

The coop is so so soooo good. Honestly, more games should have taken notice and tried to copy this. Such a fun experience and it added a bunch of replay value to the game.
This game is supreme nostalgic magic to me. It was me and a friends most played co-op game with the wonderful colors, inventive levels and varied events depending on whether you played solo or together, so it felt like there was always something new to find. I think this is my absolute favorite Disney game because of that, AND because it feels like Donald is given so much character here. That you have to pull him through gaps, his animations and movements, different paths- it feels like this game really does both mascots characters justice, it's just got that little extra magic that makes you feel part of an adventure that's not JUST a game, but a carefully planned out experience, it feels like it's Mickey and Donald having this adventure even if they're in places they've never been portrayed in before. Man I love it so much. Every new song the video played gave me flashbacks, until I could hum them all as the levels came into view. Easy as it gets, true, but I think that lack of difficulty meant that a kid not even 8 years old could beat it and that fosters memories that lasts you through life. Still think Donald had the best "Alakazam", he was putting his whole beak into that line!
I was already 20 when this game was released, and I absolutely loved it, even though it’s painfully easy. Soothing music, lovely use of color palettes… it just oozes joy. Any time you find yourself getting bitter and cynical about this life, pop this game on and watch that cynicism melt away. Except the irritating bubble/jump noise in the underwater section… that really gets on my tits.
This was one of the last megadrive games I ever bought.. I had played a bit in demon stations a few time, and it kinda felt like I was too old for it... I was 9😂. But I still found the artstyle, music and just ease of play very soothing so when I got the chance to get a game I went for it.. I also loved the boxart.. I played the game to death after that.. It really needs a re-release
I used to play this game with my little brother in coop and we had fun teasing each other. When one of us jumped or run, the other attacked him so he couldn't move haha
Good review! I love this game! The alternate paths and co-op definitely add some replay value. It is short and easy, but it definitely hits where it counts in terms of pure fun! Honestly, it is a crime that we never got a brand new entry into the "Illusion" series on the Sega CD or Saturn! It would have been amazing given the 2D magic the Saturn was capable of! I think the closest we got was a Mickey Mania port to the Sega CD with a new soundtrack.
Sega Saturn and dreamcast illusion game would've been epic. I wish sega continued genesis collection to the sega cd with world of the illusion. But add cd soundtracks and more game features.
I've so many memories of this game. It was bought as the one game I had to sit and play with my sister. One of the few times we could sit together and not argue. A wonderful game.

My brother and I used to rent this game and it didn’t come with the instruction manual so we would get stuck on the first stage at the see-saw section because we didn’t realize you could drop a rope to raise the other character 😂. So, many years later, I decided to play this game with my 5 year old daughter and I discovered how to drop the rope for the lower character and I got to see the added coop levels for the very first time! (Thanks internet…) So much nostalgia for this great game! The music, the visuals, the gameplay, and the level design are all excellent.
Great memories! Discovering that Mickey and Donald took different paths was a revelation. Someone mentioned stunning your team mate in co-op, and my late sister and I used to do this to each other - haha. Also, it was hilarious to hear Donald say 'f*ck' when he took a hit. Thanks SLX for the vid!

World of Illusion showed that Disney could recover from the disaster that was Fantasia and make a true sequel to Castle of Illussion on the Genesis/Mega Drive. It had so much variety in terms of gameplay with unexpected level designs depending on which character was chosen. The music to World of Illusion is also great and showed that the Genesis could produce captivating and whimsical orchestral-like music when done the right way.
In both the 8 and 16 bit eras there sure were a lot of good Disney games. what’s amazing to me is that in those days licensed games tended to suck but Disney based games seemed to be the exception regardless of the developer. Sega, Capcom, and even Virgin all made great Disney games for the NES, Genesis, and SNES. I’m thinking of games like Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers, Mickey Mousecapade, The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse, Quackshot, Castle of Illusion, Both versions of Aladdin by Virgin and Capcom. Those were all great!
I owned it back then in the 90s, it's a nice little game indeed, and different levels depending on the character you choose was a good addidion. I played it a few days ago on an emulator and finished it first try, it's easier than I remember!
Still own my copy I bought as a Kid. I had lent it to a friend back in the 90s and forgot about it. Recently his parents came and gave it back to me. They had found it in the attic while moving.
This one I've never played. Until I was introduced to the world of emulators. It's pretty neat. I like how each character has different paths (levels).
i would dare say its easily one of the best creations the genesis ever made. ATLEAST top 10 on the genesis but i would go even lower myself and say top 5. Thank you for covering this amazing gem! :)
It's kinda wild how back in the 16 bit days Disney had such a close partnership with Sega when the Genesis was generally marketed and perceived as the console of choice for more mature gamers and Nintendo is seen as being the Disney of the gaming industry.
Me and my friend Gomez played the shit out of it all the time loved the coop, probably the coop games on genesis made it most fun, I mean you had several games that allowed you to play with friends like TJ&E or this. Anyway it was his copy I never bought a copy until my late 20s.
Never played world of illusion on the mega drive, but recently picked up land of illusion on the gamegear, great game. Disney was on top of there game in the 80,s and 90’s every game was a classi.
Greatest Genesis Game of All Time I still play this, Its hilarious watching my kids fail to beat a level, then I will beat the game in under a half hour LOL I was Royally Peeved the PS3 ReMake wasn't as good, or had a Remake of the original with new graphics just for "Mario All-Stars" like remake to be Included
Great game that I never owned, but rented so many times. Since it had pretty cool co-op, I'd usually let my little sister tag along for the playthrough
I would knock Mickey Mouse as a protagonist, but what is Mario if not Mickey in human form? Tell me Charles Martinet excitedly shouting "Ya! Wa! Wahoo!" while jumping isn't something that the likes of a Mickey or Goofy would have done if they were in the same position.
There is a sequel sort of thing for the Switch called Island of Illusion. Sadly it is not as good as World of Illusion and uses the art style of the Mickey cartoons from the last few years.
I have a soft spot for this game. I remember my younger brother and I playing it together when I was 9 or 10. I can't remember if we beat it, but we probably didn't.
I didn't expect to see a Super Game/Super Game Power page in one of your videos, but here we are. :) I'm not entirely sure which of the two it is, because Super Game Power was a merge of the SEGA focused Super Game with the Nintendo focused Game Power. All three had the same people behind them. I had a lot of SGP editions back in the day. Anyway, thanks for the memories.
I found Castle for 42 bucks and World for I think 28 bucks, both with box and manual. It was at least 6 years ago. Those are my pride and joy, but I had to leave them behind along with my entire Genesis collection when I moved to a different country... I really hope I can get them back soon...
A great game. I was so pleased both Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion were included on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Mini. I've not actually completed World of Illusion as Donald, but having watched this video I think it's time I correct this wrong of mine!
One of the best Sega/Mega Drive games. Played this solo with each character and co-op with a sibling. Each experience is different with different levels and abilities adding to the replay, and it's a ton of fun. The 90's were Disney at their best.
I'm amazed how you didn't think much of the graphics! It's heaps ahead of Castle of Illusion (which was, and still is, a bit too dark and gloomy for my taste). Animations more fluid and more close to the cartoons we would watch on TV.
The Sega Genesis is still a Great console to this day!
It's my 2nd favorite console of all time behind the Dreamcast
It is, and still there are games coming out!
More like great emulation fodder... Nobody would want to buy a real one except hardcore fans with money to spare.

Never played world of illusion on the mega drive, but recently picked up land of illusion on the gamegear, great game. Disney was on top of there game in the 80,s and 90’s every game was a classi.
Greatest Genesis Game of All Time
I still play this, Its hilarious watching my kids fail to beat a level, then I will beat the game in under a half hour LOL
I was Royally Peeved the PS3 ReMake wasn't as good, or had a Remake of the original with new graphics just for "Mario All-Stars" like remake to be Included
Amazing video. And good timing. A couple of days ago I completed this on my Mini Megadrive for the first time since I was about 15. Fantastic game.
Id've paid good money for a remake of this one. Too bad we never got it.
I miss those Sega Disney games
The christmas level felt creepy, but in a good way. Hard to explain.
World of Illusion is brilliant. 😀👍🎮
Magical Quest on Snes is probably my favorite Mickey game, but World of Illusion is very enjoyable.
Great game. I liked this one more than Castle myself.
Just started playing Dune 2 on Sega again. It’s pretty good. I hear it was the original RTS game most RTS games are based off of now.
Yes, it stablished the basis the orther RTS followed.
This is one of my favorite Genesis games. Had so much fun playing with my nephew back then.
idk when the outro changed, but i like it.
This game runs circles around Castle and Quackshot in every aspect. I don't understand how you could find they are on the same level graphical wise.
Saturn Disney games could have looked like Dragon's Lair cartoon quality games
Amazing pixel art as well. I'm glad ps1 released hercules game. After that Sony chose 3D games over 2.5D/2D for Disney games.
World of Illusion > Castle of Illusion
I found Castle for 42 bucks and World for I think 28 bucks, both with box and manual. It was at least 6 years ago. Those are my pride and joy, but I had to leave them behind along with my entire Genesis collection when I moved to a different country... I really hope I can get them back soon...
Used to play this with a friend a lot back in the day. A lot of fun
Nope. I was already old and in the navy. Didnt even know about em. But yeah every time i see the games im impressed.
great game, even greater with a friend.
Played the master system version of Castle of Illusion to death. My heart was pounding so hard the first time I got to the final stage.
A great game. I was so pleased both Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion were included on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Mini.
I've not actually completed World of Illusion as Donald, but having watched this video I think it's time I correct this wrong of mine!
When Donald takes damage and says "quack" the sound compression really does sound like he's saying something else beginning with the letter "F" :D
I had this game, me and my family played this one a lot. Still great today.
I definitely want to see this game, and Castle of Illusion (as a collection) re-released on all modern systems, including Nintendo Switch.
One of the best Sega/Mega Drive games. Played this solo with each character and co-op with a sibling. Each experience is different with different levels and abilities adding to the replay, and it's a ton of fun. The 90's were Disney at their best.
A childhood gem.
I can still listen to this game's wonderful music. Some great and ultra memorable levels too!
I'm amazed how you didn't think much of the graphics! It's heaps ahead of Castle of Illusion (which was, and still is, a bit too dark and gloomy for my taste).
Animations more fluid and more close to the cartoons we would watch on TV.
world of Illusion is hands down one of my favorite Genesis games of all time.
