There is a railroad tunnel near Afton and Waynesboro, VA where I live; it is the original Claudius Crozet tunnel. The workmen hand drilled into the rock and set charges to blast the rock so it could be carted out. Recently open to the public at no cost (yet) and is for hiking/bicycles only. A newer tunnel replaced it many years ago.

amazing to me the man-power used in the past and what was accomplished. I hope to check it out in-person!
