In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Shin Megami Tensei. Megami Tensei, known as Shin Megami Tensei in the west, is a Japanese franchise primarily developed by Atlus, and currently owned by Sega. The series was initially based on Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani, but has become its own entity in the years since. Most of the early titles have not been localized in the west due to religious influences which can be controversial in western video games. Games under the SMT label have sold over 13 million units.

Interesting tidbit about Dante appearing in SMT3, it was part of a trade between Atlus and Capcom. Atlus got to put Dante in their game, and the Devil Trigger designs for the up-coming Devil May Cry 3 was done by the character designer for SMT games. This is why the DTs in DMC3 are so radically different from the rest of the series.

Dude I fuckin love nocturne. I just beat it for the first time in about July.
Literally my only complaint is random battles. I never liked them. At least once you get a demon with the right abilities you can control how often you fight enemies, but when you first start out it's really annoying.
Aside from that, it's a FANTASTIC game. Great story, lots of demons.
Although I do find it annoying that in NG+, the optional bonus outfit is used for about five minutes before you go back to being half-naked.
Seriously, why did they bother? Got my hopes up for nothing.

Yeah agreed, I only recently got into the series by playing Shin Megami Tensei IV and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but I love both games, they're very unique! The sad thing is that Persona's taken over and SMT's been left behind.

Really love how the MegaTen series draws inspiration from so many cultural norms... From all known religious sources to even be influenced by modern pop culture references and politics... MegaTen franchise is like a melting pot of worldly ideals..
Few corrections. The Famicom Megami Tensei is not an adaptation of the first Digital Devil Story novel, but rather a sequel to the first two novels (Megami Tensei/Goddess Reincarnation and Mazu no Senshi/Warrior of the Demon City). In the first novel, the primary antagonist is Loki, while in the second, it's Set. Both appear as resurrections in the Famicom game, with Lucifer acting as the main antagonist in it. Incidentally, Lucifer is the main antagonist in the third DDS novel, Tensei no Shuuen/Demise of the Reincarnation (think the second novel as where the story splits between the games and the novel). I think the Telenet version is also supposed to be a sequel.
Second correction is more of a choice of translation. Metempsychosis is kind of an obscure translation, and the generally-accepted translation is Reincarnation.
Third correction is Izanami over Izunami, but that was probably a typo.
Still, kinda impressed that someone bothered doing some research into SMT over Persona.

It's almost like how carbuncle summarise it.In smt,we basically just decide how the world gonna continue after the world ending tragedy happened and sometimes in the series,it's pretty much "every route isn't fully right" type of story
The first Did You Know Gaming where I did know literally everything that was discussed, including several more things that weren't, but felt like they should have been. Also, this was less of a Shin Megami Tensei DYKG, and felt more like Megami Tensei as a whole with how many of the spin-offs were discussed.

Given Shin Megami Tensei's wide focus on all mythologies, I really, really like the idea of a story starting in Japan and spanning the globe coming to a final conclusion in Israel. It just works so well with the set up they have and that's something they wanted to do in the first game! Have they ever revisited this idea in anyway or is the series pretty much always some weird version of Japan?
In 5 it's explained that the entire world is undergoing similar processes to determine their national identity and the cultural zeitgeist in the world to come after, you just happen to live in Japan
In Strange Journey the cast is very international but you're mostly going through a space hole dungeon instead of Earth as the setting

There are other cities in Japan that they could rip locations from for a change (and maybe they have, idk, I've played like four games in the series and there's like 200 or something).

Q: Why do people hate the persona series?
A: Technically they don't, they hate the persona series after 2.

A: Many reasons, the social simulation aspect of it makes it seem like waifu simulator, the stories arent as complex, they arent as hard, and the characters seem like cut outs. Now this wasnt really much a problem with Persona 3 since it had more elements from SMT (think of it like Resident evil 4) but Problem comes in with Persona 4 (think of it like resident evil 5...6).
Q: Why do people dislike Persona 4?
A: Again many reasons. Flat characters, waifu simulator, the social link (an aspect of the social simulation part of the game) wasnt as engaging as Persona 3, easier, and the biggest reasons are

Q: Is persona 4 a bad game?
A: No its actually quite fun. The gameplay is good and slightly challenging for your everyday gamer. The problem lies with the whole "it feels like an anime turned game" meaning flat characters, boring settings, unrealistic dialogue.
#Anime as a whole isnt a bad thing, its only bad when it seems more like you are creating a story that can only exist as an anime rather than a story that become an anime. Good stories can be told but if the stories requires tropes and cliches presented in anime it becomes boring.

The obvious starting point for people who don't know shit about JRPGs is Persona 3 FES.
I wouldn't say Persona 3 FES is a good starting point, considering the dungeon crawling aspect of the game is monotonous as all heck to slog through.
Persona 5, being similar to the mainline SMT games, is a pretty good place to start. Then you can go to SMT 3 and so on.
Polkadi After playing P5 it will be very hard to return to the older games because they will seem outdated game play vise. P5 is best experienced if you already familiar with the series so you will get all those little references to the older games.
And avoid PS2 P4 at all cost, play Golden.

it is RIDICULOUSLY convoluted, bro. I have never played any of the games but within the last year I started getting interested and I went to try and research it and FFS so many spin off titles and reboots and series within series! It was like being thrown into the deep end of a pool !

I loved the Demi-Kid games, a great deal funner then Pokemon was and a great story, not to mention two completely different stories for each one. Played both and had a wicked team.
It's hilarious that a spin-off game that is objectively really well designed and executed in its mechanics can be so hated by part of a its expected fanbase...
Why does that seem to be a trend with this fanbase? (Persona games and TMS seem to be really well liked by the people who beat them.)
'Cus they are objectively worse (not bad) than main games (and there are much better spin off's out there) + Persona 4 is overhyped and overrated, many times it's being called "Best JRPG ever" (it's hilarious, really) + Every "Persona is better 'cus it has life sim/date sim element's (which is basicaly VN, and have little impact on gameplay)" = of course hatred is born
Devil survivor also has tons of VN stuff and it's better than both persona and mainline

Another fun fact Shin Megami Tensei : Nocturne or Lucifer's Call is the only one to have ever been tanslate in other language than Japanese and English.
i notice Americans love to think that reincarnation philosophy comes from Buddhism...when Buddha himself Gautam Siddarth his actual name was born and raised as a Hindu. thus his teachings of reincarnation the cycle of life and death and rebirth comes from his Hindu upbringing. Shin Megami Tensei NINE is mainline, just like Strange Journey and If..., it's just not numbered. Furthermore, while this is more of a clarification-- it is pretty dissimilar to games like Final Fantasy XII or "singleplayer MMOS". It uses an auto-attack battle system, yes, but it has random encounters, and there is no in-battle movement involved. You basically just watch it play out and step in for healing and the like.
I came for the Megaten trivia and I stayed for Gaijin Goombah. Really love your videos, dude.

@@Kagetora- Actually just Megaten. The SMT part of the titles of Persona 3 and 4 was a marketing scheme made by Atlus West.
It took them a long time to do a damn SMT video after the Persona video. It has to be Gaijin Goomba. I don't hate the guy it just that his personality is meh. It feels like there is no "popular" TH-camr here beside him to do a SMT video. I just take what I can get I suppose.

Maybe some people enjoy the Persona spinoffs more then the "real" SMT games. Maybe some people would better enjoy a more focused plot and simpler gameplay then having to deal with the other games insane RNG and status buff/debuff juggling and just have, you know, fun?
Some of those "real" SMT games are never coming outside of Japan (closest we'll ever get is Soul Hackers getting a re-release on the 3DS), and would be extremely hard for anyone to play legally these days (unless, of course, you advocate downloading illegal ROMs/ISOs and using fan translations).
What classifies as a "real" SMT game to you?
