Subaru Outback Wilderness Off-road trail test note: It's more capable than ever but the camera doesn't really show you, in reality, how steep and high that hill was! Sill the Outback has improved a lot even when you try to push it to the limit! Note that not all drivers have the same skills. At 9:05 you can see that the driver of that Outback was in the wrong X-mode mode ( more wheel slip and momentum ). It still made it to the top.

I own a Wilderness, and honestly have been incredibly impressed by it's capability and climbing ability. There's nothing that the CVT seems to slip on or fight. Subaru did some real work on listening to fans of their vehicles to create a brand that enthusiasts WANT.

Credit to Subaru for finally giving one of their vehicles actual off-road chops. The Wilderness is more capable than I was expecting.
Hopefully this trim will filter down to the value oriented part of their line-up quickly. For almost $40k US I would still go with a 4Runner.

@@Tailwind1 see Jay's comment above. He hit it right on. The 4Runner could be compared to a Jeep if that's your thing, but an Outback is designed to comfortably ALSO drive on the road. That's definitely NOT a priority for a 4Runner. Subie's also value safety. Curiously, horsepower/tq, breakover and departure angle on the XT Outback is DARN similar to a Honda Ridgeline, but that is not the same kind of comparison either. Apples/oranges, my dude.

Was torn between this model and the TRD Pro 4Runner. Ended up giving the Wilderness a shot and placed my order. Aside from the added niceties Subaru includes like rear heated seats and Eyesight, the 4Runner desperately needs a refresh to remain competitive. There’s no reason a $50k top trim vehicle should not come included with blind spot monitoring, better cameras, and a more contemporary interior (less hard plastic). At altitude, the engine/transmission struggle to keep up.

This car is impressive and definitely a step in the right direction in muddying the waters of whether you should buy a car capable of off roading or a 4x4 truck that's also good on the bitumen. But I feel this is still an evolution rather than revolution, there is still considerable overhang front and rear which is not ideal. Imagine if Subaru designed a purpose built cross over from scatch?
