      You should tell them to build proper recovery points into their Wilderness models instead of relying on the I-bolts. As more people listen to the marketing hype and push these things to the edge more will get stuck. Subaru needs to give them a safe and convenient way to get out.

    I have to say I have a 23 OB Wilderness and this channel is the main reason i got one, I done all my homework for a while when i was looking but my main selling thought were because of Ryan. such fantastic car reviews and testing over the years with huge amounts of knowledge and unlike others he actually takes the vehicles off-road and pushes them.
    The 23 model has had the new interface upgrade from the new OB line and its a better layout with things like seat warmer and Hvac on the main screen without having to go through many menus. Ive not had a chance to take mine into the mountains yet but i cant wait to see what this can do. And Ryan if you are ever up north of the border near Vancouver come say hello id love to take you out in mine :)

      I feel that Subaru should sponsor this channel. Ryan does a great job demonstrating how capable the Subaru actually is, as opposed to another pretty popular review channel whom Subaru has black listed.
      I'm glad to see that Subaru is building some capable vehicles, seemed a few years they were quite lacking. Kind of reminds me of the old 80's 4WD Subarus again in their capability....great work Subaru.

    • @jwuhome
      @jwuhome ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm torn between the wildernesses and other BOF SUVs. At the end of the day, do I need all the extreme off-road capabilities for driving mostly what Ryan has been doing in his videos, which Subarus are more than capable doing.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jwuhome I've had 2 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 1st gen 96 and a 98, both of them were unibody. You don't need a body on frame SUV to go offroad, contrary to what all the TH-cam armchair quarterbacks pretend....Just look at all the regular XJ Jeep Cherokees that are heavily modified for offroad use, yes those are unibody as well. Wranglers, 4Runners, all those body on frame SUV's are just way over-hyped, and honestly ain't that great at doing anything in a practical sense...they're heavy, they're cumbersome, and they're not very well power to weight balanced. The only Wrangler that is pretty proportional would be a base model 2 door, which really is the only one that belongs on the narrow and tight offroad trails, the 4 door higher end models are too cumbersome for actual trail use due to their size and added weight, it really effects their breakover angles mostly....both my Grand Cherokees saw quite a few mud holes, backroads, ATV/UTV trails, etc. and never had any problems with either of them aside from the regular oil/filter changes, a battery and serpentine belt, as well as several sets of tires over the years. I was quite surprised with them considering they had what everyone has claimed to be the worst transmissions the 42RE...then again I had them serviced every 45,000 miles, and had auxiliary external transmission coolers on both,. The newer Grand Cherokees are quite capable as well. I haven't gotten to try out a new(er) Subaru, but given what Ryan has done in his videos they'd be more than capable with the right set of tires for your usage.

    The change of the final drive ratio makes a substantial difference. Mid and low range punch is more aggressive and responsive especially considering CVT's tend to struggle with initial take-off and acceleration.

    I'm really glad you ran this test with a completely stock vehicle and tires. I'm sure the enthusiasts will have lots of suggestions, but for us everyday drivers, the stock performance is what we want to know about. I always ran winter tires on my three previous Forester's, but since the OBW Yokohama tires have the three peak symbol, I've just left them on. My impression - with standard air pressure in the tires - is that the Geolanders are adequate, but noticeably more slippery when trying to stop at an icy intersection. Sometimes stopping distance is more important than forward traction!

    Hi Ryan, I’m a retired tire company executive with most of my experience in off-road tires such as Mickey Thompson, Cooper and Mastercraft. At around 14:15 you mention an increased potential for puncturing an aired down tire due to higher risk to sidewall exposure. This is incorrect. We conducted many controlled tests on several brands and these showed that because at lower pressures, the additional sidewall flexibility allowed the sidewall to deflect around rocks and stakes more readily thus reducing the risk of staking a sidewall. Our tests showed that the risk of sidewall damage in Offroad conditions with a tire at 18psi vs 35psi was up to 25 times LESS chance of staking either sidewall or even through the tread. Of course this also is aided by the lower speeds one usually drives in Offroad situations. Thanks for your excellent videos. John

    I could be wrong but I was under the impression you want to air down when traversing rough/rocky and sandy terrain for better grip and comfort. However, when on snow and ice, you would want a thinner tire to cut through the snow and ice to reach solid ground. Hence the reason rally drivers choose thin tires in snow. Again, I could be wrong so if so please let me know.

    Those "tow hooks" are not rated or recommended for recovery for yourself or anyone else. They will fly right out if you are doing any recovery. Owners manual also states it can cause your airbags to fail if left on in the front (like some people like to do so they look edgy and sporty).
    The "skid plate" is ap abysmal in this car. They tout it in every single video on the car but I took it off road, dented mine to hell and realized its just a thin piece of basically aluminum foil on top of plastic. Upgraded it ASAP to something much stiffer that actually covers engine and transmission. Also got the LP Adventure rock sliders and it really completes the look. Also got the WARN hidden winch bumper since I got super stuck in the middle of nowhere and it took me 4hrs before anyone came around (luckily a Jeep with a winch) and got me unstuck. Learned my lessons and upgraded accordingly, now I just get myself out of situations with the 24 OBW

ADF makes a wonderful skidplate system for the vehicle. Sure you lose MPG in the end, but the car is near unflappable. It just keeps chugging along with some little effort. Beautiful drive-system in this car for sure. Solid video testing detault off-the-showroom-floor tires.

    The reason you were able to get traction is because the snow thawed then refroze, probably several times. This is known as a frozen granular. It's different from a hard pack as you can actually dig yourself into frozen granular. If you are light enough and have wide enough tires you can get up on top of the snow, like you did. With too much wheel spin and weight, you fall through and can become high centered.
    Basically think of it as sand. You want to float on top, not dig in.

    I love mine. As good as it is, I did test it to it's limits the other day. My driveway had 30" of fresh snow, she was doing well until I got to the end of the driveway and needed to stop to turn onto the highway. It was then that I realized that this beautiful machine, in all it's glory had met it's match and was high centered. 30" of snow packed down to the underbelly of my poor Subaru. After wasting time trying everything and even being forced to give up on all my recovery devices, I dug her out and we drove on. The only thing that could have helped me in that situation would be if I had an additional 6-8" of lift and some huge mud tires, which would be very unpractical for the 140 mile round trip into town on the highway. lol

If you're consistently driving in 2 feet or more of snow, you're FAR better off with big ol knobby tires that can paddle the snow out my man. On my Gen 3 4Runner with 3" lift, I have Pro Comp Xtreme MT2 (mud tires) and it eats 3 feet of snow all day long. Like I said, I just have to get out of my driveway and the tires I have on the Subaru are more than good enough once out. When high centered, it doesn't matter what tires you have. It's like your car is being lifted off the ground and the tires have no contact to the ground. You're welcome for the education, son. =) I'm going to go snowplow my driveway now. =)

    I've had various iterations of Subaru's going back to the late 70s and I hail from the wilderness of Northern California where it was required to have 4x4 just to make it up your hill to your house. I swear by Subaru's and their AWD.

    Great video, and outstanding result. Still, I feel Subaru is resting on their laurels a bit. They should include some sort of locker for the "Wilderness" models (especially the Outback), aka the Bronco Sport. The technology must be readily available from the WRX. I have an Impreza, and am very happy with it. However, after having 20+ inches of snow in the last 2 storms here in Minneapolis, I would love to have the additional clearance of an Outback or Crosstrek. Streets get plowed, but we have huge mounds and windrows of snow at the intersections which can easily damage the underbody when you have to blast through them.

    Ah hah! I don't want to say I was worried, but it did bring back a memory of a similar adventure where myself and a cousin were unprepared (left the recovery gear at home) and found ourselves in a precarious situation. What you were doing(obviously)was driving on top of it. Which spells disaster when you sink down. You fortunately had such a light car that I am guessing backing out was not difficult to do. But once you are high centered, it is game over.(until the shovels come out and recovery aids) I don't think the 4Runner would have gone as far because of the weight. I don't like driving on top of those conditions, because you don't know when they are going to give way and drop you down onto your skid plates. (been there done that and it sucks!) All that being said, your plastic bits getting torn off is another reason I opt for a vehicle with skid plates. (too bad the 5th gen. 4R still has a lot of plastic bits to get hung up on)

    LOVE your videos. My favorite automotive videos on TH-cam. Was trying to decide between Onyx XT or Wilderness. Test drove both a few times. The Wilderness seemed peppier to me, seemed very close in handling . I liked the darker interior with the dark trim. I also liked the increased ride height and Geyser Blue was nice too. I also liked the Wilderness grill and bumpers . Onyx was a nice Outback but I just prefered the features of the Wilderness especially after watching your video’s.

    I ran those Geolandar's on my wife's 2014 Forester a few year back. I cannot imagine ANY tire having better grip in the snow than they did. Like I was driving on flypaper. Very deep "fresh" snow. They didn't last all that long though. (mileage) 2014 2.5. with 6 speed manual.

      They're excellent,very close to the standard (European) winter tire but not as good on ice and snow as "nordic" extreme winter tire (Viking contact,X-ice,FR zero,HakkapellitaR10,DM-V2 which are poor in wet and dangerous in dry). BTW steel chains are made for deep snow,everybody should have a set in their cars in winter)

    Suggestion to Subie: an easy way to deactivate the assisted tail gate. I was fighting the car the other day to fit my 14' 2x4s in the car. I know this is a first world problem, but Subie could steal a trick from GM's Trailblazer and just offer an "off" button that's easily accessible for the assisted rear gate. That would make things to much easier when you want to carry longer items around.

My experience on roads like this with a Xterra is similar; I could go until I high centered (snow got too deep and I had to shovel to get out). The car did very well, supplemented heavily by a good driver! Most folks would never have made it that far. Well done!
