The Yixiang DIY Battery Box on the testbench. Does it tick all the boxes?

  • This was too good to say no to! The Yixiang DIY battery box seems to have all the features we ever wanted from such a case. It has the 200A JK inverter BMS with 4.3" display and communication, a DC breaker, double terminals, side handles, can be equipped with rollers and is stackable with up to 5 boxes!
    Also, the inside seems to be well designed and does not leave any further desires: middle frame for strong compression plate, closed backwall to support the cells, front panel and BMS can be removed without unplugging any cables.
    Overall, this seems to be THE perfect battery case.
    Update:
    - In regard to the issues with the rollers and broken cardboard box, Yixiang will improve the packaging for customers who order the rollers as well.
    - Apparently the circuit breaker has a 275A trip current for BOTH breakers in parallel. I cannot verify that and still think the voltage is too low as well.
    - Yixiang recommends stacking only 2 boxes if the rollers are being used (4 is possible though)
    - Yixiang will ensure all connections are tightened and checked

    Andy i wouldn't worry about the voltage specs. The primary use is switch, not circuit breaker, because the BMS takes care of any overcurrent. As a professional industrial automation guy i would prefer a more sophisticated overcurrent protection, but this configuration works as well.
    50mm² is good for 200A continous current, if the leads are 1,5m long and it's ok for 275A trip current. It could be thicker, but all in all nothing wrong with that.
    And yes, the box really seems to be of outstanding quality, not only regarding the design, but also the manufacturing. All screws accessible, beefy metal sheets, middle rail, nice busbars etc. That's really impressive.

    Hi mate. You have done so much and so many reviews, saving us from blowing ourselves many times and finding lots of things we wouldn’t.
    I know it’s a huge ask but is there any chance that, when you have no build or test going on, that you do a “last two years” summary video. It’s like “I got a XYZ BMS and after 10 months of to and fro it’s a good but not great product and I would/wouldn’t recommend it”. You have so many thibgs that you would have no issue filling a video or two with info.

Wouldnt like to see these in appartment blocks where a penthouse dweller decides to use his roof space for solar. In OZ surely regs wouldnt allow it, but in other countries - would present a risk to other appartment dwellers. I read that putting gear in an attic void space is no longer allowed

First the 3 inch LCD was cracked and unusable second no matter what I did I couldn’t get any voltage to the external terminals. Building it was the easy part setting it up to work impossible. At 9:05, I wonder Andy if they Are they using the dual pole breaker contacts in parallel to double the Interrupting current capacity of from 7,500 amps to 15,000 amps to meet the potential short-circuit inrush current potential of the battery which may be at least 10,000amps? My thought as to the 550A overload trip current possibly being too high for the design might not be major issue, as it is in sires with the BMS that provides some level of overload protection, and the breaker is serving mostly as short-circuit protection device, and as you suggest serves more as an 'On-Off' switch.
    As for the sizing of the conductors going from the BMS to the breaker and out to the terminals being undersized for 550A continuous current, again you have the BMS to limit current and the breaker appears to be function as short-circuit protection, and limiting the size of the conductors to the intended max current of the BMS, may help in reducing potential short-circuit current giving the breaker a better chance to interrupt a short circuit without damage or failure to the breaker itself or the BMS.
    As for the the breaker line-load connections, and the circuit being bi-directional, from what I recall about Circuit Breaker design, current direction may have more to do with meeting short-circuit current interruption rating and the design of the contacts being able to meet spec in one direction more so in the other, and in the case of charging you also have the BMS and the undersized conductors that might may limit maximum possible short-circuit charging current to less than the breaker's designed ICU.

    • @david0alinda
      @david0alinda 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The way they used this breaker is NOT ok. You cannot "stack" Ics values as it will be a lottery as to where the bulk of your current goes when in parallel. Even a tiny amount of resistance difference between the poles makes a huge difference in current carried. Next to that, with DC-breakers, the directionality has to do with arc suppression. It says on the label "mount vertical" which is because of the suppression chamber being in the correct orientation. As this one is mounted, only when charging, or with a short INSIDE the battery in a multiple battery system, will the arc be quenched in a correct way. When the short is outside of the battery; better not to have any body parts in close proximity. This also answers the question af another poster here about being able to mount this box on it's rear.
      By the way, kudo's for the CN manufacturer for labeling this breaker with relevant information. Many leave lots do be desired.
      In short: opening DC-currents is a very tricky business, and this one has gotten it wrong. The only way to use this box safely is to have a correct T-class or NH fuse in close proximity to the connection.

  • @universeisundernoobligatio3283
    @universeisundernoobligatio3283 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The dual breaker is actually 2 110 amp breakers in parallel.
    Ideally you only need a breaker that is 120% of your max inverter current.
    Also if you are using multiple battery boxes each battery box breaker can be a much lower current rating.

  • @olafschermann1592
    @olafschermann1592 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    On small DC breakers you have only one direction where the arcs are distinguished (Funken lösch Kammer). DC should break plus and minus pole. (1x 275A breaks both poles). Charging is only 50A, discharging can go to 10kA when the inverter would have a short circuit.

I noticed when you were loading the cells on the right side of the box that you were putting them in the box with the most positive terminal to the outside of the box. The BMS positive busbar looks like it was designed to connect to the front cell inside terminal on the right side. Also, if each breaker pole is rated for 275 A couldn't you just use one pole of the breaker to reduce the over current rating of the breaker by removing the paralleling bus bar on the battery side of the breaker to split the poles?

    Some DC circuit breakers use a magnet to deviate and extinguish the electric arc that forms when breaking the circuit under load. This works only if the current is flowing in a certain direction. It is interesting. Being an Aussie, I find the reverse to be icky. Our circuit breakers are reversed, as yours. Up is on.
      When things were simpler, the power switch would have a dimple in the top, which had a bright red colouring (on white switches, or a white dot for dark coloured switches). Perhaps this was a deciding factor? Purely a visual safety indicator, which only works when viewed from above?
      The real humm-dinger is that we have switches on all of our "power points" (outlets) and in the US/Canada, that is unusual.
      These days, there are plenty of options without these visual indicators. It's just "muscle memory" to know which position is on or off.
      Perhaps it's a logical decision after all? Power comes from the top of the wall (the roof) down to the switch. The device which plugs in is further "down", so an up switch stops the power at the outlet, while a down position allows the power further "down".
