- In this video, Bryan from the Hair Band Basement and I tackle Hair Metal in the year 1988... and this crap was EVERYWHERE. Join us as we discuss some of the unknowns and some of the heaviest hitters of the genre... come along for the ride!
This channel is a lot of fun. Glad I found it.
Hey, Brother, I'm glad you found it, too. Thanks for watching and supporting what I do, man, I really appreciate it.
L.A. Guns debut has a ballad Cry No More/One Way Ticket. Another great show guys. Cheers from Australia
Australia is in the house! And you are absolutely right! Completely blanked that one. Hey, man, thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel... I really appreciate it.
Totally correct. In the U.S. it was only One Way Ticket. DEFINITELY a ballad, and a great one at that, IMO. L.A. Guns’ self titled debut is one of the best first albums ever … up there with Out of the Cellar for best debuts. Also, The Missing Piece was two albums BEFORE Black Diamonds. Love ya, Hair Metal Guru … but go back to your L.A. Guns.
I had a few of those cassette singles. Poison had a song..... living for the minute..... on one
Glad to hear Kix gets love. I saw Kix and Britny Fox open for Ratt. Philly, Pa. Great show.
Shit, I'd give Rick Allen's right arm to have gone to that show. Wow.
@@HairMetalGuru419 That is hilarious AF!
I was 11 years old. I had floor tickets. I actually really love Ratt - Reach For The Sky. Ratt was really good but a little muddy in the mix if I remember correctly. Kix and Fox were incredible.
I remember Britny having such a crystal clear crisp sound. I was really into their album and loved their set. Britny was from Philly and they were in their hometown so the audience was really behind them. Massive response.
I had heard of Kix but hadn’t listened to them and they blew me away. The sounded like a very seasoned arena rock band. Audience was rocking.
Ratt was so-so which sucked because it was the only time I ever saw the band. The mix was just bleh. However, they did put their all into it. They didn’t seem to be dialing it in.
I had Blow My Fuse on my list but had to let Guru have it or he gets all pissy eyes. Kidding sir.
@@HairBandBasement Pissy eyes lol. I am singing this to the sounds of Starry Eyes off of Too Fast For Love.
@@TheMultiStanKpopFan great, now that’s stuck in my head. I will never listen to that song and not think “pissy eyes.”
A new benefit to getting up at 5AM. A new Guru video.
Early bird gets the worm! ;-)
When you mention all the Top 40 hits these bands had, don't forget that this is was on pop radio. The kind of stations that now play Taylor Swift, etc. were playing Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Whitesnake, Poison, Bon Jovi, GnR, etc. all day long.
Yeah, sure, the big hits were on pop radio, absolutely, because pop radio is dedicated to whatever is popular. Hell, Metallica was played on pop radio when the black album blew up.
Yeah, I miss those days…
No you're right. This was still when rock bands could cross over into pop. Nowadays that doesnt happen. It ended in the 2010s.
Great episode as always...great picks from both you and Brian...you guys pretty much covered everything I'd put in my top 10 of 88 except for 1 album...I love Ratt's Reach For The Sky! I know the album isn't widely looked at as one of Ratt's best, but I'm a big fan of it!🤘 Great job guys. Can't wait till the next episode! Take care and Rock On🤘
I almost put Reach For the Sky on my list. It was my 1st Ratt album so it hold a special place for me.
Invasion was my 1st one but I like Reach For The Sky better and I know that's an unpopular opinion, buy hey everybody likes what they like...take care Brian.
Jay, thanks Brother! Yeah, Bryan really fucked up by not including Reach for the Sky--I'm putting him in the penalty box next episode. ;-) I love Ratt, but that's the one album that just didn't grip me. Got some solid shit, but some filler as well. Hey, man, thank you for being a member and supporting the channel, it truly means a lot!
@@HairBandBasement Yeah, you really fucked up not including that one. What the hell were you thinking?
@@HairMetalGuru419Ok Mr. “Oh, I Can’t Have Horns In Metal.” Whatever elitist fancypants.
Great episode as always! Got my Glitter Litter CD last week :) I know ive mentioned it before but a video focusing on the whole bubbleglam sub genre would be awesome. It may never have gained mainstream attention but bands like Glamour Punks, Tryx, Queeny Blast Pop, The Mistakes,Champange Suicide, Heart Throb Mob, Revlon Red, The Peppermint Creeps, Bubblegum Mafia and Sugar Shock (featuring Andreas of Glitter Litter) among many more are a unique and often overlooked part of hair metal and glam history.
Holy shit… we got some love for Living Color. That was a surprise. My older brother got tickets to see The Rolling Stones and Living Color opened. The old white guys who are stones fans had no idea what they were watching. 😂
I love their debut. Such a damn good album!
Krokus-Heart Attack from this year is criminally underrated. Check it out if you haven’t already
Shit, you're absolutely right... I frickin' love that album.
AC/DC is like eating comfort food when you don't feel well. A firm, steady and comforting presence. Sad what's going on health wise with them. They are knocking on 80 and no one lives forever but its hard to see your heroes get old and pass on.
You're exactly right about AC/DC... unfortunately Father Time is undefeated. Luckily their still around.
I still love "Heatseeker". You can hear them turning up the energy and intensity on that album.
Bobby Rock has been playing drums with Lita Ford lately...live shows.
Yep, that's right. Hey, thanks for watching man.
Although I do like the first 4 Ozzy albums "No More tears" & "No Rest for The Wicked" are still my favorites. Zakk was so hungry when he joined. Just watched on YT "ozzy osbourne live moscow 1989" he KILLED it. Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" is probably my best concept album of all times.
It sounds like we are of the same age. You said you turned 16 in Oct 1988. I was born on Oct 28th '72.
Love this channel. Keep it coming @hairmetalguru
I appreciate it, Brother, seriously.
Was wondering when Operation Mindcrime was released then literally Brian announced it ! Absolutely awesome album from possibly my all time favourite band. Yes , you have to listen to it from start to finish Mr Guru and you won’t regret it.
Cheers for another cracking episode
Its illegal in 4 states to listen to individual songs from the album out of context.
@@HairBandBasement 😂
The big song from Girl School was their collaboration with Motorhead "Please Don't Touch" on the St. Valentines Massacre EP. Great stuff!
YES, I LOVE that song. They also did a kickass cover of "Leader of the Gang." Thanks for watching, man.
Awesome-another HearMetalGuru episode!
Hey, man, I appreciate you supporting the channel!
Smashed Gladys is amazing, for some reason I always thought is was a male singer for years , another great show
Yeah, there was a point in my life where I wasn't sure it was a girl either... kickass album though. Thanks for always supporting the channel, man, I really do appreciate it!
Dumb names these bands had. Sounds like Garbage Pail Kid characters.
Love this channel…rock on Guru 🤘
No one ever talks about Smashed Gladys! Bravo! 👏
Appreciate the props, Brother!
I agree. Smashed Gladys -social intercourse.no filler. Every song was great. Sally Cato. R.i.p.
i feel like im in the minority...as i liked slammin gladys better! that video for on your knees had jani in it as a limo driver.
Bought the album at a used store in, like, 1995 just based on the cover and album title... and was blown away. Dive in the Dark, Eye of the Storm, and... well... the entire album, really. Just kick ass. Should have been a big album.
@@patrickreeves4650 That's right... what an epic cameo.
This was a fun one guys! Hope Enuff Z Nuff made the 89 one
Hey, thanks, Brother, I appreciate it! Published 89 a few days ago... find out here! haha th-cam.com/video/X6G5B-798k8/w-d-xo.html
God this was such a great year in my life the music was so awesome going to Rock clubs every weekend the girls looked so good the bands rocked I couldn't imagine being you g these days no rock bars no good music jesus you can't even talk to people everyone is zombified on there phones sorry kids you have no idea what you missed
Amen, Brother. Amen.
Another excellent video with HBB! 1988 has so many classics. Honorable mentions for me would be House of Lords- S/T, Brighton Rock- Take a Deep Breath, Circus of Power - S/T, China- S/T, Ratt- Reach for the Sky, Jetboy - Feel the Shake, Killer Dwarfs- Big Deal, Zodiac Mindwarp - Tattooed Beat Messiah, Europe - Out of this World, Yngwie- Odyssey, and King Kobra III. In the vein of Operation Mindcrime, I also love Crimson Glory- Transcendence, Fates Warning - No Exit, King's X - Out of the Silent Planet, King Diamond - Them, and Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (though I can live without hearing Can I Play With Madness ever again).
So many good albums. I almost put Maiden on my list.
Matt, thank you Brother! Yeah, there are so many stellar albums from that year. Killed me to leave off Circus of Power, Killer Dwarfs and Jetboy... amongst others. And, damn, I always overlook Brighton Rock, great fuckin' band. Hey, man, thanks for supporting the channel and being a member! Truly, I appreciate it.
Great list. Not much to add so I'll share some random-but related-thoughts.
I saw Girlschool in 1983, opening for Quiet Riot. Very good live act. They were actually "mentored" by Lemmy from Motorhead.
My band opened for Slammin' Gladys in 1992. They were cool guys.
Hang on to that Mississippi Nights flyer. That was THE club to play back in the day (it's gone unfortunately). Just a partial list of bands I saw there between 1989 and 1993---
Sleeze Beez
Britny Fox
Great White
Enuff ZNuff
Faster Pussycat
Tora Tora
Bang Tango
Danger Danger
Lillian Axe
That's all the hair bands I could remember off the top of my head, I'm sure there were more. I even played there myself a couple times. Mississippi Nights wasn't strictly a rock club because I saw quite a number of new wave type bands there too.
Best album of 1988 was Wingers debut. Band blew everyone else away . Finally mentioned Smashed Gladys!! Great band. Ozzy No Rest is my second fave ozzy, and always loved Girlschool. Nice Kiss shirt Guru!!
Thanks, Brother! Yeah, Winger was so talented and so underrated for their musical abilities. It was about time Smashed Gladys got on an episode, I love that album. Hey, man, thank you SO MUCH for supporting the channel and being a member, I really do appreciate it.
"Even more chick-ish!"... This is the quality content we're here for!
What magazines are under your pillow Guru????
Any magazines under my pillow I stole from my uncle... ;-) Thanks for watching, my man!
My favorite Ozzy album is "Diary of A Madman" but "No Rest for the Wicked" is really good too. Zack's guitar tone is so heavy. One of the later Bon Jovi albums that's really good is "The Circle".
I remember buying The Circle... maybe need to revisit that one. Thanks, Brother, for always supporting the channel!
@@HairMetalGuru419 The Circle grew on me after a couple of listens. It's a solid album. That last song 'Learn To Love' is a really beautiful ballad.
'First, naked Kip; now, my ass!' 😂
Watching and chuckling along to the show in Portugal.
Keep it up, boys! (I'm referring to the show) ;)
We definitely plan to "keep it up." And, unlike Bryan's, mine will STAY up. ;-) jk. Hey, Portugal is in the house! Thanks for watching, Brother.
@@HairMetalGuru419 🤣Always a pleasure, never a chore!
@@HairMetalGuru419Yeah, the way you eat fistfuls of Viagra, it should stay up to the point you need to call a doctor.
So stoked for this.
Check out Hagfish.
The album: Rocks your lame ass
It’s an incredible fun punk album that has some glam metal hooks. I could see CC being in their band lol
I also made a playlist on my TH-cam page with the Ambush songs I suggested that you may like so you can find the tracks easy. One song is missing but I can’t find it uploaded on TH-cam.
Hey, I checked out Hagfish! Good shit, I love that kind of punk... thanks for the recommendation. Now I need to check out Ambush--I'll go to your page and see if I can find the playlist. Thanks a lot for the recommendations and for always supporting the channel, man, I really appreciate it.
Smashed Gladys is fucking awesome! Ozzy’s The Ultimate Sin is my favorite! CT
Sorry for so many comments but your channel has got me on a roll.LOST BOY'S. How come they were on a major label and nobody talks about them. We need to do a deep dive because I already in one song can hear the cult Cinderella and Bang Tango
If a band was ever featured in METAL EDGE magazine between 1986-1992, it could be discussed in a conversation concerning hair metal. Might be hair metal adjacent but still should be considered when these glory years are discussed.
You're absolutely right. So many bands fit under the general hair metal term... and what the hell, it's all rock'n'roll.
Another great video from my favorite Channel I'm in my alter ego mode today..the grunge guru... 1988 was the year of mudhoney Tad and Melvin's.😊 The real nasty grunge that did not get populated...but that's another story.. I came here to do one thing.... mention JOHNNY CRASH SLAVE RAIDER and LOST BOYS
Shit, I easily could've included Slave Raider... and I love Johnny Crash. Need to revisit that Lost Boys album, though. Hey, man, thanks for the kind words and supporting what I do! Maybe you should start a Grunge Guru channel? haha
Your channel is influencing mine. West Coast Grindhouse party add Southern grind house party.. hairball salami tsunami
@@HairMetalGuru419Guru is you are my hero. Lol.. if you need any help or if you want to work on a hair metal project I'm up for it
@@HairMetalGuru419 I uploaded a Lost Boys video for you
It's time to create a new Weird Al yankovic.. play heavy metal version..FRAUDIT 🤪RIOT MAMA WE'RE ALL LAZY NOW
1988 Zodiac Mindward & the Love Reaction release "Tattooed Beat Messiah".
This album pre-dates G&R by a full year.
Appetite for Destruction came out in July of '87.
Fucking Stage Dolls, man. The ENTIRE catalogue is worthy. They're still at it too. Love Cries changed my life.
I think I have 4 of their CDs, but I know I'm missing some shit... need to catch up. Thanks for watching, Brother.
the get a life album is phenomenal. every track is fantastic.
@@patrickreeves4650 I think I have that one. There's a phenomenal ballad on it.
@@HairMetalGuru419 in my opinion, the best ballad they did was on stripped, called 'love don't bother me". but there are a few ballads on get a life. 1) is someone like you and 2) is naked in the rain. both are great.
Lets go!!!!!!!
You've been here for a long time man, and I will always appreciate it.
@HairMetalGuru419 your welcome brother
Mindcrime YES! I’m a comic book writer/artist/publisher. I’ve reached out to Geoff’s agent to do it as a comic book.
Speaking of Bon Jovi, he’s been accused of including fake autographs in his special edition new release.
I completely agree W/ both you’re #1s🤘
Bryan, Lilian Axe (Poetic Justice) was the band that I discovered from not sending my Columbia House card back in time😂
I always thought that Beau Hill dude from all those Ratt records , polished up Poison Open Up too much . The roughness , Cheap Trick swagger Poison had on debut was the best part . Bulletboys debut was solid , LA Guns became a favorite, I was like 11 and would have been immersed in Guns n Roses , Appetite and around Christmas 88 , Lies hit . I dig thiis channel , I need this stuff . I have yet to hear yall talk about a record I had , The London Choirboys.. it was a blatant Faces rip off , but later in my teens , I would really get into Faces .
Hey, Brother, thanks so much for the kind words and always supporting what we do, seriously. Yeah, I can agree on Poison--I love the raw, almost punk swagger on the debut title track, Look What the Cat Dragged In. I wanted more of that. I know we did mention the Choirboys on the 1990 episode--they weren't a featured band, but we talked a bit about them and the similarities to the Black Crowes. I love "A Bit of What You Fancy," they could definitely have a prime time spot in an episode at some point. Thanks again, man.
I had A Bit if What You Fancy in my 1990 list. It replaced Shake You Money Maker because I think they deserve more exposure than The Black Crowes.
Poison had John purdell & Duane Barron on Open up , not Hill.
Oh hell , it actually credits Tom Werman from Motley fame on google . Either way , it always sound flat . The Open Up Live record had that edge on the Say Ah Tracks ..
Regarding Kip Winger - This guy was nominated for a Grammy for his classical composition
I always tell people for a comparison that Smashed Gladys is like a female fronted L.A. Guns
Kip either won a award or was nominated for one for his classical or opera music a while back. I always liked Winger
i believe he was nominated for a grammy, but did not win.
Yall should do a segment on the producers that ruled the genre . The Mutts and Beau Hill and Ted Templetons , Tom Werman . I never knew Hill did Warrants debut ..
🤘🤘
We need to team up on a project concerning the industrial hair metal thing.. starting in 1999 there was hair metal musicians teaming up with other hair metal musicians to cover yet more hair metal songs.. and we recording their own songs.. are you doing weird remixes with skinny puppy and kmfdm.. St Clair records is responsible.. but it gets a lot darker and deeper.. because I started finding these CDs at truck stops along the way to a vacation to Florida.. and then all the sudden they start popping up on deadline and Cleopatra records and then the hair metal box set Hollywood rocks.. which I have and you would absolutely have an orgasm over
I'll stand up for In Heat by Black N' Blue
No idea how Black N’ Blue wasn’t big.
Dirty looks' cool from the wire is the best '88 hard rock/metal album period. For me anyway 🤘🏻 RIP Henrik
It's your arch nemesis the grunge Guru here to remind everyone when they sit down to dinner to eat their meat and potatoes of Warrant RATT and dirty looks.. don't forget tha grunge veggies..Skin Yard L7 and my sister's machine.. wear a flannel bib over the top of that Kix shirt
Grunge veggies... haha. I like the song "Pretend We're Dead" by L7. People are gonna shit when I wear a flannel shirt at some point. ;-)
@@HairMetalGuru419 L7 were in the movie, Serial Mom and they had songs in Natural Born Killers and Pet Sematary 2.
Check out Warlock. Another female fronted band that is very good.
Warlock with Doro Pesch! I'm not an expert on their stuff, though I know "All We Are" and I think I actually have a couple CDs of there's as well as a couple Doro solo albums (Force Majeure and something else). Need to go revisit their stuff again. Thanks for the recommendation, man, and for watching!
I rule the ruins is an amazing song.
All we are and east meets west on the Triumph and agony album are also pretty good stuff!
You would love The melvins and tad
Seen Girlschool a couple of times recently and they still cut it live, defo not the original lineup as the original guitarist has passed away and I think a different bassist now. Also saw winger at Download ( maybe 18 or 19, not sure of the year ) and they were excellent, the bassist from Dillinger Escape Plan did a guest appearance for a song
Kix is my favorite band, and while I of course love Blow My Fuse, Hotwire is my favorite. Brian Forsyth is still in Rhino Bucket as far as I know
Nice pick I remember The Stage Dolls and they're from Trondheim Norway.
Norway! Shit, I knew it was something like that. Hey, thanks for watching, man.
@HairMetalGuru419 One of my favorite albums from 1988 is Odyssey by Yngwie Malmsteen
If you listen to hair metal more than likely you got ozzy and ACDC in your collection
Absolutely correct.
Thank you! Also “hair metal” bands opened for Ozzy, AC/DC and Kiss.
MELVINS "Honey Bucket" I will upload it soon today
Check out the Motörhead/Girlschool split. They had been around for a while before take a bite.
They were opening for everyone back in the early 80’s, Hit and Run was their big album.
Shit, that's right, and I know the song "Please Don't Touch," and it fuckin' rules. Thanks for the reminder!
Surprised you haven't mentioned Spread Eagle on your channel. Or have you?
Ya know, I haven't, and you're absolutely right. I do like Spread Eagle, but for some reason I just haven't found a place to put them in yet... hope to fix that soon! Thanks for watching, I do appreciate it.
Almost had their debut on my 1990 list.
Prophet cycle of the moon from 1988! Fun fact the early incarnation featured Ted Poley from Danger Danger so really check out the band and that album and keep these videos coming
I'm going to check it out as soon as I get home for the day. Thanks always looking for a new hair band to jam. The height of civilization for sure
@@winstonslone2797 No problem I love finding new bands from the era to listen to myself and just when you think you know them all you find out about another one

Kings X - Out of the Silent Planet

Nirvana PJ Soundgarden AIC.. they were good sleazy garage bands before play fell victim to the same play that killed hair metal.. 10 years for the good guys 2 year run for the flannel
Ok not PJ they were ridiculous.. to is Mother Love Bone before that
Yeah, hair metal/80s hard rock had a helluva run compared to most genres.
It is absolutely mind boggling when I see a remix of great white doing a Van Halen song but it's remixed by kmfdm.. or one of those industrial bands.. and then somebody throws a Dweezil Zappa guitar solo on it
LA GUNS HAVE A CD CALLED GREATEST HITS /BLACK BEAUTIES AND IT'S LOADED WITH REMIXES
