I remember Use Your Illusion I & II both getting five star reviews in Metal Hammer. Baffling, but proof that the hype was working. Both albums are selfindulgent, undisciplined, no quality control, scraping the barrel exercises of unhinged egomania. And yet it paid off commercially. The GnR brand was built on sleazy hard rock so solid and genuine that the image was still strong enough to carry those two turds from 1991 to the top of the charts for years hence. They used absolutely EVERYTHING they had, mimicking The Beatles´ wildly overrated White Album from 23 years prior when the Fab Four scrapped quality control in favour of selling more albums, quantity over quality, GnR style from 23 years later.
Now back to the future: Aerosmith copied the Guns´n Roses Use Your Illusion formula of releasing ballads with expensive videos for rotation on MTV, while still pretending to be a rock band. It carried them for the rest of the decade, until the oublic grew tired of the routine. Then they became a nostalgia act, just like Guns´n Roses have been over the last decade.

I was a big fan of Def Leppard at the time and remember the upcoming Adrenalize release. I bought every CD single that was released for that album; as well as the album itself. The album was rather meh and feels like Hysteria 2.0. There were some good tracks. Lets get rocked was catchy in a Pour Some Sugar on Me way. White Lightning was Gods of War 2.0 and a good tribute song. Tear it Down was a great closing track. With that said, most of the b-sides on their singles were much better; and most ended up on Retroactive.

Actually Big Game was one of my favorite albums, But as for Big Game they were seriously pressured by the label to get it written and get it out fast. Mike said he always regretted giving into the pressure to do that. But most songs I thought were good. Cry for Freedom is a great song, and White Lion was always very political in their writing. Living on the Edge, Don't say its over, If my mind was evil.. Mane Attraction was the album that they wanted to make but they got zero support from the label by then. Mane Attraction was musically the best they ever did. Vito left because of the business side of it. He hated it. Adrenalize was good but lets be real I don't think DL ever could have followed up Pyro and Hysteria with something even better. But it was good. However, my favorite DL post Hysteria was Retro Active. 5150 is my favorite VH album. I saw the VH 3 tour and it was great. Gary was amazing live. I think the problem w/ 3 was Eddie was going through a lot of problems at that time. And VH didn't really know what they wanted to be at that time. As for Crue you gotta remember everytime Crue put out an album the scene had changed from the previous album. They came out kinda "shock rock" then by the time they were working on Theater the whole glam thing was really becoming big and Nikki the main song writer was really into his heroin at the time, so song writing wasn't the best, but I really love Micks guitar playing on the entire Theater album. Girls I thought was a good sleazy album which by then bands like the LA Guns/GNR, Faster Pussycat etc was really lighting up the Strip, it just always seemed Nikki was good at trying to be a little head of the curve on what was about to become big out of Hollywood.

The Illusions project didn't need to be a double album. If they had just cut the fat and put all the best material from both albums into one, they would have had a masterpiece. As it is, for me at least, Illusions 1&2 are just bloated, uneven, and pretentious. Dont get me wrong - theres some great stuff on both. But theres also just sooo much filler too. There is some good stuff on VHIII. "Year to the Day" is amazing. "From Afar" is great. I have a recording on VHS of VH playing live in Australia with Gary on vocals. I think it aired on VH1. You have to give Gary credit. He is the one that got VH playing live the old deep Roth tracks that they never hardly played, such as "Hear About it Later" and "Romeo Delight". Gary is a big fan of the Roth era of VH. During this Australian live show they played "Mean Street" and "Unchained" along with many of the new tunes. The live version of "Year to the Day" will melt your face off with Eddie's amazing blues solo. The only Sammy song they did was "Why Can't this Be Love" and during that they took turns singing the verses with even Eddie singing one verse.

I called the death of GNR the day I heard that Izzy left. Not because I don't love Slash and Duff, and liked somewhat liked Axl... loved on AFD... but yeah, there was no one two write the songs once Izzy left. At least not an album's worth. Have you listened to Izzy's solo stuff. Really really good. Not hair metal. Nothing will blow you away. But it's really solid.... especially 117° ! Thanks for the reviews... er... list... countdown? Whatever this was, it was fun... I agreed with almost all of it. Thing is... I have one thought about stuff now at 49... but my 13 to 18 year old self has a bit of a different opinion. For example, got into Motley with GGG... then went back to the rest of the catalog. So love Too Fast and Shout... not so much Theatre. I don’t think motley’s girls album is as bad as you guys think but when we all are these huge fans of those first two albums how can you seriously do any better than that. As far as the girls album goes I myself think that Wildside, girls, dancing on glass is cool. If you know what dancing on glass mean you should understand it. Your all I need could have changed the game on how all ballads go if mtv wouldn’t have banned it. All in the name of was their opening song on that tour and always have liked that one to except the opening line that Vince sings but the song is cool and fun. I know we all like what we like so I get it and I have to say my favorite motley albums are their first two. They freaking rule. So if I could make two amazing records in my life I would be in heaven. With all that said I also am a big fan of the Motley Corabi album in ‘94 and I enjoy saints of Los Angeles a lot. Would I like for the CRÜE to get back to there early sound hell yes but we all get older and change so I’m greatful for those first two albums so much because most bands back then was lucky to have gotten a record deal let alone record two fantastic albums. With an exception of a few songs from some of the grunge bands I thought then and still do think it was the most boring rock and roll of any decade. Come on guys Nirvana were the kings of the shoe gazers. I never bought into the lame and lazy way they would look, talk, act or played. Please someone explain to me how is it that Alice In Chains is a grudge band and released their debut album in August of 1990 and with a big hit man in the box and was all over the radio and mtv yet nirvana doesn’t breakout until late ‘91 and the are crowned as breaking the grunge thing. As a music fan that has never added up. Alice In Chains is the band that broke that different sound and look and feel. Nirvana is so overrated it’s sickening. A lot of people love Def Leppard's Hysteria, but honestly for me that album was a big let down. Pyromania was my introduction to the band and then I went back and got High n Dry and On Through the Night which I still love. Then there was like a 5 year pause due to all the issues with the band and there was a lot of excitement waiting for Hysteria to come out. I first heard "Women" on the radio and really liked that one so I bought the cassette expecting the rest of the album to be similar. The tracks I like include "Rocket", "Gods of War", "Women", and I can even tolerate "Animal" but I was really disappointed with the rest. To be fair, many of the other tracks such as "Pour Some Sugar on Me" sound better live with the raw guitars. I bought the VHS live video that came out around that time "Live-In the Round In Your Face" and those tracks were at least tolerable.
On a side note: does anyone remember having trouble with the clear plastic cassettes back in the day? Cassettes were usually manufactured with the solid white plastic casing but after awhile some companies started making the clear ones with the paper inserts that had the track listings. I had a lot of trouble with those. They would jam in my tape players. I started taking the screws out and removing the inserts and then putting them back together and then they would play better. I remember having Black n Blue's Nasty Nasty cassette that wasn't even very old and jammed up in my stereo until I did that remedy.
