Toto......... needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't see that, but since Jan is out of there... it might happen
@@GrantsRockWarehaus Foreigner got in now maybe more 1970's Rock and Roll bands will get in i Got about 150 that i like to see get in Classic Rock Rules
Excellent show! I am with Todd, These Chains is a fantastic track, Steve Lukather’s solos throughout the song are amazing, especially the end solo is breathtaking, don’t want it to fade out…!
For me:
1.Toto IV
2. Toto
3. Isolation
4.Hydra
5. Turn Back
6. Minefields
7. The Seventh One
8. Fahrenheit
9. Toto XIV
10. Kingdom of Desire
11. Through The Looking Glass
12. XXX
13.Falling in Between
14. Old is New
15 .Tambu
16. Dune
I agree with Tim Durling! "Isolation" and "Kingdom of Desire" are my favorites as well.
1- Hydra
2- Toto
3- Isolation
4- IV
5- Turn Back
6- Kingdom of Desire
7- Tambu
8- Seventh One
9- Mindfields
10- Falling in Between
11- Fahreinheit
.....
Fahrenheit at number eleven? Dang! haha
@@GrantsRockWarehaus I used to love Fahrenheit. Great songwriting and Mixing ! But it might be most dated Toto album ever made, not a fan of the production.
Still, better than most of the albums released in 86 👍
It's been a total blast tonight so heres my favorite Toto albums kingdom of desire, the debut, 4, the seventh one and isolation honorable mentions to Hydra, mindfields and Fahrenheit love this band so much this will probably change tomorrow so for today this my ranking
Being a huge Toto fan, and a keyboardist for 35 years (I’m 40, BTW), I love everything they’ve ever done, with the exception of a few little things. The 4 Tunes on Past To Present are horrible, but I think if they’d have kept Joe, they would’ve been something else, but since he lost his voice on the 7th One tour due to substance issues, that wasn’t an option. So, here’s my ranking, with some added commentary:
16: Dune OST - This was more of a David Paich project, with a couple of full-band instrumentals, one of which (“Desert Theme”, which blew me away on the 40 Tours live album) is top-shelf Toto for me.
15: Through The Looking Glass - Recorded to celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary, the band wanted to choose cover tunes that inspired them, presumably as kids. “While My Guitar” was Luke’s tribute to his friend, the late George Harrison, who had just passed away. I’d agree that “Bodhisattva” and “Burn Down The Mission” are the standouts here.
14: Old Is New - Love this one, and it would’ve ranked higher if it weren’t for the last track. Toto and EDM simply do not mix.
13: Mindfields - This is a long one, as mentioned. You can definitely hear where some fat could’ve been trimmed. There are some great tunes on here, my favorite probably being the bonus track, “Spanish Steps”, which came standard on the US release, which also had a shuffled track listing compared to the rest of the world.
12: Toto XIV - Very strong album, song-wise. My issue is with the mastering. It’s just too compressed, especially on the vinyl release, which I happen to own.
11: Toto XX - A great collection of unreleased tracks, and a few live tunes, one of which would later get an official release on the Live In Montreux album, “On The Run.). That had an earlier appearance as “E-Minor Shuffle” on the James Newton Howard And Friends album, which featured Steve and Jeff Porcaro, and David Paich. Those other live tracks probably didn’t need to be included. BTW, “In A Word” was the B-side to “I’ll Be Over You.”
10: Falling In Between - I’m a bit surprised that nobody mentioned Ian Anderson’s cameo on “Hooked.”
9: Kingdom Of Desiree - The last album with the great Jeff Porcaro, who sadly passed away before the album was even released.
8: Turn Back - Their “arena rock” album, hence the distorted drums, which is my only real problem here.
7: Isolation - Replacing two band members, plus having to follow up the juggernaut that was Toto IV. There is a demo of “Lion” floating around the interwebs with Bobby on vocals. While Fergie sounded great here, some interviews say that he struggled quite a bit with nervousness, especially in the studio.
6: Hydra - Love this one, but I agree, the lyrics on “All Us Boys” are atrocious.
Now, to the top 5, which really could change order at any time.
5: Tambu - This is the album I use to tune in a live PA system before a show. It just sounds perfect! The background/co-lead vocalists were touring with them at the time. I quite like them here.
4: Toto - The debut. Their way of saying “This is who we are as a band.”
3: Toto IV - Their do-or-die album. The record label were ready to drop them if they didn’t come up with a hit. Oh, they did it here! Six Grammy wins, BTW.
2: Fahrenheit - As you can tell from the top 2, I’m a huge Joseph Williams fan. Love this album. The real highlight for me is the Steve Porcaro penned “Lea.” Those vocal layers at the end, with a Don Henley cameo. Need I say more?
1. The Seventh One - Features my favorite Toto song of all-time, “Mushanga.” Featuring some very cool musical twists and turns, and an absolutely brilliant Jeff Porcaro groove, this could probably be Africa Part II.
damn good ranking! Just goes to show you how strong a catalog Toto has. Love it!
Enjoyed your in depth run down! 👍Good to see `Tambu` high up the list. I think that album has some very strong ballads on it.
My faves are (in no order)
Isolation
Kingdom of Desire
Toto 1
Fahrenheit
Hydra
Turn Back
The Seventh One
Toto IV
Nice!
@@GrantsRockWarehaus I know there are more albums, just I haven’t listened to them and therefore can’t rate them. Throughly enjoying your channel and also enjoying the Contrarians ✌️
This was fantastic! You guys were so positive and constructively critical, not necessarily bashing. Really enjoyed this…my top 5 in no particular order…Falling in Between, XIV, Toto (debut), Isolation, Turn Back
Thanks for the kind words!
Yes! Well done guys
It was quite a task...
My favourite band since I heard Hold The Line as an 18 year old. Lucky enough to see them 3 times in Australia. Top 3 for me: 1. Toto 2. Toto IV 3. The Seventh One, bottom of my list is Mindfields- too long!
Good ranking!
My ranking of Toto vocalists 1.Joseph/2.David/3.Bobby/4.Fergie.... Isolation + 4 were both almost perfect albums.
Great show and discussion ! Thank you Grant, Tim and Todd. Chez
So thrilled that Todd picked The Seventh One (my all time fav) My fav song is still These Chains!!!!!!!!
❤ This video 🥰 One of the best 🤩 I always like TOTO 🤗 I have seen them 3 times Live 😇
So good
Great show, good job, Grant!
Speaking of Frontiers…Generation Radio is one of my favorite albums of the last 2 years!
I haven't heard that. What would you rate it out of 10
Fun video!
Toto have an excellent catalogue, Very little that's not at the very least, decent. My ranking:

2.Turn Back - 5/5
3. IV - 5/5
4. XIV - 5/5
5. Fahrenheit - 5/5
6. Debut - 5/5
7. Hydra - 5/5

13. Dune - 3/5
14. Mindfields - 3/5
15. Kingdom Of Desire - 2.5/5
16. Through The Looking Glass - 2.5/5
Fantastic review gents, a diverse selection of opinions but a great catalogue to look at.
Thank you kindly!
Great show gents! I could talk Toto all day, but will try to avoid that here, so I'll just say my top 5 is Isolation, The Seventh One, Toto, Toto XIV and (cheat warning) Hydra, Kingdom of Desire and Falling In Between tied for 5th! IV and Fahrenheit are a ways down my list, not because they aren't also great albums (they are) but they're the softer/slicker side of Toto that A) isn't my favourite flavour of theirs and B) is what way too many people think is all they do, which probably bothers me more than it should!
Great picks... it just goes to show one how strong the catalog is! Thanks for the comment!
I’m a huge Toto fan…if you do more videos like this, I’ll subscribe
What do you want to see? I need details man... I need details! haha
@@GrantsRockWarehaus Have you done other similar bands? Foreigner, Journey, Survivor, Boston, etc?
Good show 😎💯👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Outstanding video!! Only saw them once on the XIV tour with Yes and they were great.
That’s Steve Porcaro on the Hydra cover, according to an Inside MusiCast interview with him.
I respect your opinions, but Through the Lookin Glass makes sense to me. Because the members of this group began as session musicians, it’s like they were looking back to their beginnings, which was playing on other people’s songs.
Just to comment on Steve as sole vocalist, I do think he's an excellent singer. The difference between the two records where he takes the lion's share of lead vocals is, I love all the songs on Tambu but only a few on Kingdom Of Desire, which always feels more about the riffage than the melodies, for me.
Maybe that's the issue... good point!
Toto......................... Rules
I agree with the top 3 of Tim
love it!
I bought the first Toto album as a kid and a very long ongoing joke with my girl is Geogie porgie pudding pie, kiss the girls and made them cry 😭 from 25 years ago and it just being mentioned brought a huge laugh 🤣 to both of us , Good catch. Toto 4 i just purchased again for a 7th time on record , never had the cassette or the CD
They're playing Burn from XIV on headlining shows this year
Oh wow Todd! 😮`Turn Back` is my no.1 and `Hydra` my no.2.
We all hear things differently, but look at you for putting Turn Back at #1. Love it!
Even though it ranked low, I like Turn Back! I'd probably give it an 85 out of 100.
@@ToddEvans1964 Hi Todd, 85 is a good score! 😄 I got into `Turn Back`, `Hydra` and `Isolation` when I worked with a guy and we had to drive around a lot together in his car and he had those albums on cassette playing on a regular basis. It was then that I realised there was more to Toto than `Hold The Line` and `Toto IV`. Thanks for your reply really good to hear from you! Best wishes.
Good show guys 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Yes sir , great channel 👍@@GrantsRockWarehaus
1 Turn Back,2 Hydra,3 Toto,4 Isolation,5 IV,6 Fahrenheit....
Turn Back #1... Todd Evans, where are you?
Ohhhh. I must disagree with the comment about past to present. Byron, albeit, odd for the bands personality, was a very good singer. As a singer myself, I regard Out of Love as one of Totos best ballads ever. Shelf your expectations and listen to it on its own. Spectacular. Do you hear what I'm saying Is also a very good track.
TO-TO MANY ALBUMS!!
There is that... lol
Really curious as to if anyone knows why The Seventh One seems to have been mastered at a much lower level than all the other albums? All my copies no matter the format are noticeably quieter and now even when streaming that album, I have to turn it up. Really odd. Always wondered why.
Do you have the Toto box set?
@@GrantsRockWarehaus Actually, not yet. I literally put it in my Amazon Cart while watching this video, so now i just need to explain to my wife why i need yet another collection of music from Toto. :) I assume these are all remastered and maybe the volume issue is gone?
@@GrantsRockWarehaus and if you find the time, would love your thoughts on my cover of These Chains. :)
th-cam.com/video/9I1G4xMMAeY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4_A9kz4JGQf2pVqU
Do you like Toto more than you like Grand Funk Railroad?
Good question, but here's my answer. I would listen to "We're an American Band" or "Shinin' On" more than anything else in the Toto catalog
Toto Hydra Is a 1979 Album
yep
Tim should do voice over work.
Tim does work in radio
Isolation,4,7th were my favorites...I like many of the Williams,Paich,Kimbel songs but not Lukather, the more he's featured, the less interest I had.
Me too!
Just a little warning. If you get that big box that Grant is showing beware that Mindfiräelds is screwed up. It's very badly mastered.
Everything else sounds great!
Lukather commented that they forgot to add the final reverbs back into the remastered version. Subtle, but enough for me to grab an original copy from 1999.
That's good to know - the original CD sounds great.
You guys are better than I am, I could never sit through an entire Toto album. All great musicians, but boooooring music.
I have to admit, some of these albums for me weren't all that easy to digest... just sayin'
