Honestly this was one of the most educational and real episodes of the show. I loved seeing the process of building a pedal, including all the mistakes. I can imagine how tough it must be to do it quickly, especially in front of cameras and people. Huge respect to both of them!

I'm amazed at how friendly everyone is seems to be in the pedal world. No egos or anything, only passion. We've got maybe 70% of the best pedal manufacturers on the market in this video, and they're just messing around together with funny challenges, as friends, which I find soooo crazy

What a coincidence. Just about 15 minutes ago i finished my little fuzz in a tin can🎉😂
Its a two knob fuzz face, volume and bias, no fuzz pot. I used 2 Valvo AC128s I got in a cheap lot a few weeks back.
Didnt have the nerve to crank it and annoy the neighbors yet but what ive heard until now sounds massive

I just finished building of my first guitar pedal here in Serbia (with a little help from my father who's making electric guitars, tube amps and pedals since 2009).
My personal choice was to make Dallas range master treble booster clone, with all NOS parts. So I did it, all the capacitors and resistors are from 60's with all good measurments.
When it comes to a transistor things become interesting. My father tried to make his first pedal back in 1988 when he has 16 and for this purpose he found very old glass OC47 germanium transistor as one of the parts. However, he could not make pade works, so he put wooden PCB plate (similar as Robert's one) with some parts and this OC47 transistor very badly soldered in the tool bag with all the things in it. So one month ago when I was collecting my parts I found a few AC 128s and AF350s germanium transistors, but I wanted OC44 or something similar (you cant buy or found that in Serbia so often). I asked my father about that, so he told me "I used to have one OC47 and that is the only one I ever saw, but I think it's probabbly broken". Whe tried to find it for a few days and eventualy we did, and gues what it was still working great.
So, in the end of this very long coment (maybe boring) I finished pedal and it sounds absolutely amazing. I know OC47 is not the original transistor, but when I heard the story about how it survived for 35 years I had to choose this one. The sound is same as this old 60s treble boosters, and I love germanium sound.
So, few days ago, I decided to do a germanium fuzz pedal, and I found and saw this video today, It was so much helpful and inspiring. Thank you JHS, greetings from Serbia.

Pre-Covid I said I was never going to make a pedal. Covid hits the TPS-Josh-Macari episode hits my computer. That ToneBender 1.5 was the sound I was looking for. I am on version 21 still trying to reach that sound. Currently using a shunt regulator to bias, OC140/950 (~80) Q1, OC140/950 Mullard Q2 (~120), emitter follower output with defeatable tone control.
Toshiba makes some of the best transistors. Some of their JFETS are legendary.

Suggestion...if you do this again, give them 2 hours with a 15 min break after 1 hour that way it’s not so stressful. I mean I was stressed just watching this and props to the trophy builder that was pretty cool.

I learned early on a valuable lesson that has served me well ever since: don't assemble any further than necessary to test. I cringed as soon as Heather started screwing on that back cover. This also brought back childhood memories of begging my dad for scraps of wood to build circuits on. I had the components and understood enough of the circuits but had no idea how things were meant to be built so I tried all sorts of solutions. The veneer was awesome here and I only wished we saw the custom cap. Great job to both with the only loss going to time limits. More of these PLEASE!!!

This takes me back to the days when as a kid I would watch my dad make a circuit board from scratch for is circuit. He’d have this panels with gold in them and pit tape on it. Then dipped it in some acid of some sort and in a few minutes this Fiberglas board had his virus onit when her removed the take. All the other plating was fine except for where he put this pin stripping tape. It was very cool then he start adding the components and soldering them up. It was amazing to watch him. I was a kid at the time and I watched but eventually into Law Enforcement. Later I did go back to school for electronics and only got an Associates Degree. I wish I had done more so I could jump into the pedal bldg. Great show everybody and we all won, there were no losers…!

My gateway to fuzz was David Gilmour. Those amazing lead tones on the classic PF records we all love. I read that he used a Big Muff with his famous Strat and wanted to give it a try. I ended up with an @EarthquakerDevices Hoof and never looked back. As the panelists mention here, fuzz is organic - buy or borrow one and try it with as many guitars and amps as you can, always experimenting with volume, tone, and pickup selection.

The advice about trying effects broadly is great. I didn't like fuzz for the longest time until I found one that you can crank to the point that it becomes (effectively) a bit crusher/signal decay; the catalinbread blood donor being the best of that type. I went from never thinking I would own one to now having three different fuzzes.
