Danny is just your everyday 7 foot tall, jazz drumming, 180 iq having, sacred geometry loving, psychedelic doing, midwestern, fun loving, humorous guy. You know? Those guys.
The guy is a power drummer, and the fact that he plays this song during every concert for the fear inoculum album and does it the exact same way every night speaks volumes about how incredible he is as a drummer. Tool would never be the same band with a different drummer, singer basis and guitar player we struck gold when these people found each other and created this band !!!!
The absolute master of polymetric, unique time signatures. It never gets old watching drummers try to figure out his time signatures and giving up. The complete heir to Neil Peart and it's easy to see his influence. This song is a complete showcase for him, and deservedly so. What might be more amazing is the fact that Danny is 58 yrs. old when this was recorded. Tool is simply an experience. Danny is simply one of the best drummers alive today.
I mean, they're easy to figure out, it just takes actual time and attention to hear them. This song has its verses in 33/16. The chorus is in 4/4. The bridge section is a 3 over 4 polyrhythm between Danny and the rest of the band.
@KingOfLegends23 The poster mentioned Neil Peart as a drummer who Danny is influenced by. I merely mentioned a few more. I guess it has to be spelled out for you...
@KingOfLegends23 How is mentioning other drummers who influenced him _in addition_ to the one mentioned not adding something to the discussion? It quite literally is.
AND HE WAS 58 WHEN HE DID THIS! And can we talk about the polyrhythms? That other sound is the guitar, yes sir. The guy in back is Maynard, making it about the music, not him. A shocking thing for a lead singer. He was getting out of the way for the wall of sound that the band ushered in for feeding.

@@MusicShed Well, that magazine left freaking Joe Satriani OUT of the 100 greatest guitarrist of all time, so... You can't expect much from those guys.
It's an opinion list dude hahahah. It's hard to standardized a rating system to measure any construct. Danny is VERY good, we will leave it at that to be conservative.
A comment somewhere said he drank like two cases of water during a concert and never took a piss. He's probably eating 8 to 10k calories on a concert day. The Rock eats 10k a day to maintain his physique, so drummers are probably in that range during tours.
it is maynard, as we all know his favorite spot is in the dark behind everyone else...at 3:57 of the video, he's right there behind the right-back crash and china lurking and crouching like a tiger ready to pounce.
seeing Tool live is the closest thing to a religious experience I've had, excluding taking psychedelics. they are even better live than on record, and Danny absolutely nails it every time I've seen them.
Saw them at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton about a million years ago. Smoked a little before going in, but that's it. They played my fave, H, and during the crescendo I started tripping my face off, full on out of body experience when he screamed "I DON'T MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND!"
I've watched about 20 plus different reactions to this song. That was very entertaining! A nice mix of teaching, awe, funny comments and piano too! Well done!
Man if more music teachers were like this guy the world would be a much better sounding place. Instead they make everyone play the damn recorder for a year.
actually he was crossing to his other platform. On their recent tour he had two platforms, one on each side of Danny, and he would go back and forth at different points during the show. So you'd see him on one then disappear and reappear on the other side of the stage. It was a cool setup.
@3:45 "What time signature are they in?" IIRC at the moment you're asking it's 14/8 + 14/8 + 5/8. With occasional 14/8 + 14/8 + 6/8. The chorus is 4/4. There are a couple one-off 5/4 bars throughout the song, too.
Tool has 3 other members, so Danny is constantly playing between 2 and 4 time signatures to sync everybody up... He unifies the time signatures with his drums and makes the song work. Every member of the band is a genius and an equal contributor and has equal say in composition.
Well said which why they are great. Team work at its finest. Especially artistically speaking. No one memember is more important than the other in the band and its apparent if you see them live. Absolutely incredible
That "guy walkin' back there" is the lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, doing his usual "I'mma do the whole concert from the back of the stage" routine. Edit: Also, 33/16. Count 5+3+3+3+5+3+3+3+5
I get the same result but for me, it feels more natural to solve it polymetrically as 5/8 + 11/8 + 12/8 + 5/8 (it is especially the 12 - 13 transition that makes wobbly heads) for the verse. And yes - we both smile to each other at 33. And it makes sense that we solve it differently because the different band members have a tendency to put their accents at different places. So it can end up feeling even more rhythmically deep - even before they break out into polyrhythmic on top of the poly-metrics (as in the middle theme). The important thing is though - how smooth and groovy they play odd-number bonanza. It is there, making headbangers confused, but when we lean back and lets it wash over us it is so damned fluid and meaty. The sequences are not flashy - they feel integral to what at least I listen to. And in this case, I feel that almost the entire song is creating tension. Only a couple of times do they release the tension. (my personal theory, this is why FI-album got mixed reviews for being introvert or navel-gazing as first listening. They are building these long phases of tension - and they give a big F in people's desire for a quick tension-release. I enjoy the way they hold and builds these statics - insisting us to be there and listen. Excellent stuff).
Most tool songs have Justin and Adam doing their own things and Danny tying it all together with multiple different time signatures going. One with each hand and foot at times. That's why his nickname is the octopus.
I also wondered how much energy Danny must use during a set. When I saw them live earlier this year, Pneuma was I think fifth out of ten songs. The guy is an athlete of the highest calibre. Mentally and physically on another level. Also a little tidbit for you. The drum pad skins were designed by Ironhead Studios. The team that design and make all the Marvel Avengers masks and outfits.
People never talk about his precision during live performance. They are touring and playing through their songs. He makes it look thoroughly easy. So hard for people to understand the level of musicianship of these guys. Including Maynard of course.
@10:08 - 'Who's that guy walking back there?' That's the singer, Maynard. He sings from a platform on either side of the drum kit rather than front/center stage. He will sometimes swap sides in a breakdown like this. Great reaction!!
He’s like 60, shredded, giant and phenomenal. That rolling stone tanking must’ve been way before this album. There’s no way he doesn’t jump to the top 3. One of the best pieces of musical advice I ever got came from a one-on-one master class with Daron Hagen back when I was in music school. He said: "Totally inspired composing and performing is the best. It's what we all want all the time. But of course it doesn't work like that; inspiration comes and goes. So our job -- the real 'job' of being a musician -- is to get SO GOOD at our craft that no one can tell the difference between inspiration and technique."
That guy you saw walkin in the back was Maynard the lead vocalist. He goes back and forth from these elevated darkened platforms on either side of Carey. I got to see them last February the day before everything shut down, it was amazing.
People are saying 33/16, but it wouldn't make sense to have a 45-50 bpm tempo. It's much simpler if you say 33/8 @ 100 bpm. I think the easiest way to count it is to think of the first bass note as a pickup note, then count 7 twice (half time), then 5 double time. So 14 + 14 + 5 = 33.
Drummer guitar player here- you smashed the love for the kit and a great player well versed in technique- you are right. Thanks for your video. I enjoyed some good feel. No one respects drummers .
2 things I've read about DC that blow my mind - 1) he doesn't really think about time signatures, more he follows the "feel" of the song, and 2) he practices playing the "hand rhythms" with his feet and the "feet rhythms" with his hands, I guess minus all the fills though!
I've seen this performance before but it was fun to watch your reaction for sure. Seemed genuine and EXACTLY how I felt when I was watching and actually experiencing these incredible and technically bad-ass approches to each performers parts. It all comes together perfectly in this performance, simply amazing. Anyhow, earned my sub on this one @Music Shed. As a guitarist myself on my weekly livestreams I strive for perfection every time and understand how much personal effort it takes to get to new heights. Looking forward to more content.

You will be a TOOL fan for life now if this is your first experience!!!!! One of my most favorite bands since 1992!!!!!
Never get tired of people watching Danyy Carey and watching them realize how brilliant he is
David - What time signature are they in?
TOOL Army - Yes.
Is that what they say?
@@MusicShed Yes.
Amazing review video man! Love the insert you add in the video! Super informative!
"What Time Signature are They In: An Unauthorized Biography of Maynard Keenan"
What time signature are y'all in?
Maynard: fuck if I know, ask Danny!
@@normancounts2924 Danny: Speaks in alien, no one has the capability to comprehend.
Love from the Tool Army! Great reaction!
Those are 4 guys sent from an other galaxy to teach us what music can be...
I missed this react video the last six months and I think is the best!
Great analysis!!! Your keyboard sounded great too at the end!
You kidding??
He ruined it at the MONSTER FILL part.
Drummer guitar player here- you smashed the love for the kit and a great player well versed in technique- you are right. Thanks for your video. I enjoyed some good feel. No one respects drummers .
Apparently nasa has its best scientists trying to decipher the time signatures
He burnt no calories at all - the performance was god given.
"What's the time signature?"
"Tool."
I was at this show, and saw this live. Even so, I could (and do) watch this video again and again and again.
If you want the time signature, it's the rythm guitar! Danny plays lead!
You nailed it man I’ve watched at least 20 reactions to this and every time I say he is another world blessed by some drum god
Eurystheus: " Heracles, I have a thirteenth labor to complete if you wish to gain immortality: Play the drums live on this Tool song; Pneuma."
Danny Carey:
"Hold my beer."
Edit:
BTW, sub'd.
Great production, presentation.
Joining in at the end was icing on the cake.
The guy walking behind Carey was the singer, who travels from one side to the other and gets on platforms from back stage.
Favorite part was when you were like "I can't just feel this music anymore, I gots to play along some!"
When a cat gotsta play, a cat gotsta play!
Good job music shed this video is super high quality with good content subbed
"What time signature are they in?" Danny: "All of them"
Drum Kingdom...best description ever...and your duet killed it
I love watching peoples reaction to Danny! High hat in the middle followed by what time signature are they in? Lol
YOU: ‘What time signature are they in?’
Danny: ‘Most of ‘em.’
Wow, Technique will set you free !! So true!! I love how Daney Carey uses a more conventional Rock grip with his sticks ,but I would still love to learn the Jazz technique . I would also love some of those nice double kick pedals as well 8)
i loved your little keyboard jingles at the end, lol great video man
