Right.. I don't like the exterior styling of current gen but that is subjective and it is important that they still need to be successful so it stays alive.
@@taelee347 yep I don't like how the new one looks, but what really matters is how it drives. Subarus have never been particularly good looking cars but I really liked the last generation's look (I have a 2018 WRX). The complaint about the cable shifter feel is legit though that's one thing about the newer WRX models that Subaru still needs to work on.
@@tweefruit It doesn't come with a manual, which is really weird because they deliberately cut out specific portions of space for the manual transmission in the Levorg. The manual fits in there, yet it's not an option.
I own a ‘22. Two years, 50k miles, 19 autocross events, two rally cross events, and two track days later, I’m unbelievably happy with this chassis. The kicker? I gave 27k brand new for a base. Can’t beat it.
@@v8_sami I haven’t had a problem, and I mean that quite literally, however, I have the split/dual screens. I will say, because I’ve got a ‘22, I don’t have wireless CarPlay. That’s probably my only gripe and I’m pretty sure they’ve solved that. When I purchased the vehicle I was test-driving GTI, civic si, Elantra n, Wrx, and brz/86. The way I saw it; si had my favorite interior all the way around (infotainment included), GTI had the worst (only because of their knucklehead infotainment) and the others were all in the same ballpark. I actually had the most fun with the brz, but I just couldn’t make the car work with my daily life (I can only own one car because of my apartment’s parking situation.) Short answer; I’ve had no issues 😆
@@uncalm right? Especially considering what was going on in the market in 2022. They couldn’t sell them in my region during that first model year ( my assumption was the plastic 😆) so I got kind of lucky. I see them around town all the time now , so my timing was perfecto lol
I sold Subaru's for a while. I was "The Subaru Guy" at my dealership. I owned a 2018 WRX for a time. I really liked the car, but I wanted the STI every time I drove it. You guys were the ONLY channel that pointed out the exact deficiencies of that vehicle, such as the constant timing pull, gear-shifter feel issues and others. I haven't driven the new one, so I'm extremely happy to see your guys' praise of the new platform. Good for Subaru. I hope they let STI actually do something in the future.
The timing pull is real, even on my '21 WRX. If it's too hot, car pulls timing and it feels like a nissan sentra. If it's too cold car cuts boost and it feels like a nissan sentra. The only time it doesn't feel like a nissan sentra is that perfect outside temp of 50-70F.
@@TheGreatestRhea Just get a toon bro, it'll be fine bro. It doesn't pull timing to give the motor a fighting chance of staying alive, it does that for funsies. A toon will fix that. What? Your motor went bang 2000 miles later? No way. Must've been a bad motor, can't have been the toon.
I daily a 2022 wrx limited. At 56yo, having owned a wide variety of cars, I can enthusiastically say this is my favorite car to date. Such an engaging daily drivers car. I already have 50k miles on it and it has been rock solid. I hope the TR is still available in a couple of years, I’ll definitely be upgrading to it. Great honest and accurate review!
I did a double take when I was going south on RT 47. Passed you both when you were sitting on the corner of Conely waiting to turn. As always, great video!
I love my ‘22 WRX. I got it under MSRP, it’s a blast to drive, the AWD is invincible , it is incredibly easy to live with, and it really has no big faults. I could not be happier
Everytime I drive past a VB I expect to see someone in my age group (20s). But instead, I see a lot more moms and grandmas drive around in this gen. It's pretty hilarious as it's completely unexpected.
I currently own an 03 Evo. This channel does a great job of discussing the features of this new WRX. We definitely need more cars like this. I would also purchase one myself to add to my collection.
I love my VB, I've never been happier with a fun/quick/practical daily, but I wouldn't have paid $40k for it. This year's pricing just reinforces how much of an insane deal the BRZ is.
Jeez. I remember not too long ago they were discounting them so much because people were still upset by the its appearance. I could have had one for $28k (not including taxes and fees) and now they’re approaching $40k? Crazy.
I ordered my Premium in 2022, it was 32.5k plus about a grand in accessories and then 2-3 grand in PA taxes/fees. Under 40k out the door is a good deal, over 40k just isn't worth it for a daily driven performance car IMO, and I'm not interested in tracking an AWD street car unless it was an old beater that I was going to build into a rallycross car. I beat the piss out of my VB and I haven't experienced overheating or brake fade on a twisty backroad.
I have a 22 premium and I’ve never loved a daily more than this car. It’s a pleasure to drive everyday. I didn’t like how it looked on TH-cam, but then I saw it in person and fell for it.
Definitely agree it looks better in the wild. The wheel arches have weirdly grown on me. I've yet to see them painted looking right. Somehow screws up the proportions in solid body color...
It’s weird how looking at it on your phone or computer screen compared to in person really makes you go from hating the way it looks to actually liking it.
You guys put out the best reviews, and the fact that you talk to the engineers shows them that you guys really care and speak for the entirety of consumer and enthusiasts alike. Props gentlemen
They did listen...to the buying customers. The buying customers clearly stated, through their purchasing, they aren't too interested in purchasing a hatch.
@@mofayerit is the buying demographic. The hatch sold poorly here in North America which is why they discontinued it. They even get the levorg which is a wagon version of the wrx in other parts of the world. Americans just don’t buy hatchback like that.
Yes. I loved owning a WRX in the past and would buy one again, but I now have dogs/family I need to haul around so I ended up going with the Outback Wilderness (which has the FA24 as well) instead. People's priorities change and unfortunately the number of people who can both afford a brand-new WRX and whose family situation allows for a fun sedan over a more boring/practical hauler-type vehicle is not as large as Subaru would like it to be. I can only afford 1 vehicle, and that vehicle has to be top-of-class in the winter and has to be able to haul people/cargo. Those are non-negotiable. If it's fun on top, it's a slam dunk. If they had offered the WRX as a 6MT wagon or the Outback as a 6MT I 100% would have bought one.
The WRX is probably the best entry level performance vehicle on the market. It might be the only one in its category. Very little at the low 30s has this performance. I appreciate that this still exists.
@@hhaste I already have a sedan. No complaints either way, but I’d like my second vehicle to be more utility but maintain the fun. A great car no matter the configuration
Thank you guys for this video, it follows the quality standard you set. I work in a national park where it's mostly gravel roads or snow roads during winter, and our parking lots are filled with these new WRXs. I think they simply listened to their customers.
Ive had a TMIC, Intake, Charge Pipe, Catback and a custom e-tune on my 2022 wrx immediately after I bought it in 2022, I make about 350/350 and have had 0 problems, the car is solid and is an amazing daily.
HAHA he does like to nitpick and throw a lot of shade at so many cars. It's as if if he is comparing them all to a perfect version of something in his mind that just isn't real. You have to look at these cars for what they are. They are very well developed AWD flat 4 rally inspired easy to drive fast vehicles that have quirks, but, the positives outweigh the niggling little annoying bits by far.
Great review, as always, gentlemen! As a '23 owner it's very imperfect, but there's many things to love. As you mentioned you can can have safe fun on the streets, it's value is undeniable, the visibility is great, and if you like the basics (e.g., like an analog gauge cluster) then it's also 1-of-a-kind. For people looking at them, some things to consider: the ride is very firm, the audio is not great, and you will need to budget for winter tires. Holding onto it until I get shoved back in the SUV penalty box
Many suv are not penalty boxes if you know what to look for. I went from name WRXs to acura RDX A-spec. I get so many more compliments in the RDX than I ever did on all years of owning WRX, it has every feature under the sun practically, oh and it's just as fast as a wrx too. Sure, no manual, but that's ok
I am people with kids, and I bought one this year. They did exactly what I needed: a practical car with some dynamic potential. I used to admire the WRX 20 years ago, when I was a teenager, and now I can buy one and still take my family to a picnic. This car is amazing, I am enjoying every bit of it. Reviews say that this engine is very under-stressed, which makes me want to discover its true potential. Anyways I am not planning to sell this one ever. This one here is my toy for years now.
Same here. This is my family friendly manual trans so everything fun car. It really doesn’t have ANY competition. Thank you Subaru for making this car.
I'm still running my WRX 2015. The more I age with it, the more I like it. I guess I have come to realise the WRX represents a childhood dream and that's a big part of the appel, at least to me.
Same here, plus all the small mods (stage 1 max) makes it even more personal :) Got a TLX typeS couple years back with a plan to sell the WRx... could not make it :)
Had a '22 base VB for a year that got totaled by a tree. Genuinely an amazing car for the money, even after upgrading to a GR Corolla, I still look back fondly on that car.
I traded my 22 WRX in on a GR Circuit Edition back in November. Got it for MSRP and from the sounds of it the crazy markups are mostly gone. My VB had an intake/Felix tune on it (~300whp) and felt comparable to how the GR feels stock. The handling and brakes are way better in the GR. The VB has a lot more back seat and trunk space plus makes easy power with minimal mods. The GR is way more fun, but the WRX totally wins in the value and modding departments.
@@theodorenguyen2064 if you ever want to put people in the backseat you need the VB. Corollas might as well be coupes with how cramped the backseat is.
It's only a car worth considering the way you got it. Once you get in to the low to mid $30's it's GTI or Elantra N. Upper $30's it's GRC. $40's it's a fuck no.
I bought a WRX new in 15. Always wanted one. Sold it in less than a year. Main reason, the timing pull/engine tuning was absolutely terrible. Second reason, the cable linkage for the shifter just sucked. It’s been 10 years, crazy to hear that the shifter still sucks. Maybe Toyota needs to lend them an engine/trans combo. Otherwise I loved the rest of the car. Great review guys!
Subaru's USP is being able to make their own engines (boxers) and trans. (both manual and CVT) to cut costs unfortunately! Even the Aisin gearbox from the STi adds cost compared to Subaru's (inferior) in-house manual. Would a Subaru WRX with a Toyota 8AR-FTS 2.0L inline-four turbo engine still be a Subaru?
I have a '21, still blows my mind they went with cable driven instead of direct. Replacing the bushings, shift plate, adding shift stops helps a ton. I also 3D printed some nylon components to tighten up the surrounding components of the shifter. It's not a miracle but it makes it FAR more enjoyable to drive.
The only thing I didn’t like about my ‘22 Wrx is the infotainment. Crashed and blipped wayyy more then what it should have. They did a software update a few months ago and it fixed everything. Love my car
Im gonna tell you what I was told when I was only mildly interested in a VB, go for a test drive. Subaru dealerships in my experience are a lot better to deal with than Hyundai and toyota. If they dont have a TR, test out a limited and justvimagine that car but with better brakes and seats. It took me 5 minutes of driving a premium to realize I HAD to have one as soon as possible. Originally wanted Grey, but ended up getting a WR Blue 23 premium for around 34.5k, and I never impulse buy anything. It's just that good. No issues except a cracked windshield, but that wasn't the car's fault. It's such a usable performance car, with all the modern amenities you want as an enthusiast, and none of the techy garbage you don't. Feels like one of the very few "oldschool" fun car's you can still buy new, but with Android auto/Apple carplay. The TR trim can only be better than a premium, since the price differential is a lot smaller than if I were to try to upgrade everything on mine to something comparable. TR is a steal. But if you don't want to spend over 40k on a wrx, a limited, or premium with upgraded audio (stock stereo blows, I have it) is still a hell of a good bargain.
@@MS-mr4zm yo buddy, do some research before going all keyboard warrior. The AWE Touring exhaust is very mild mannered. I didn't get their Track edition because I knew it would be crazy loud.
the base is truly the best bang for buck car; only aroound 30k new, AWD, 6 speed, turbo with an engine that is proving to be reliable and super mod friendly.
I feel like if Subaru of America really listened to their customers, the TR spec would have the sti style wing like the Aussie version. Also, the short throw shifter and shift knob from the sti catalog should be standard on this model.
I love my VB WRX. Its not especially exciting on dry pavement but on snow and ice its the best vehicle I've ever driven. Makes me laugh out loud every time. The cladding is ugly but i like that i can slam it into snow drifts and huck it down gravek roads without fear of ruining the paintjob. Mines a '23. Wish i had the big brakes and recaros but happy to not have to turn off all the stupid active driver aids every time i get in. I dont like cars thst steer or brake without me telling them to.
Seattle GT owner checking in. No kids but 3 pets 😅. Picked it up 2nd hand with 6k miles for 35k 6 months ago, and love the slow car fast experience - just wish we understood more of the SPT power/torq limit / anxiety in the aftermarket
Shout out to Subaru for listening to your customers, now just bring back an STI version of this very same TR trim level and offer it with body color matched panels, an STI Wing, drive modes, and over 300HP for 45k and we'll all rush to Subaru to buy them.
I can't help but smile when I hear your positive comments about TR as well as the WRX lineup overall. Holy hell, you're even getting me to feel nostalgic about Chicagoland "scenery" as you're driving along. Sadly, in much of Europe (where I am most of the time) Subarus are a rarity, but I'll find away to get yet another one. Also, I'm surprised how much I've warmed to the VB styling - especially as its represented with your test TR.
I'm a Toyota guy through and through but this in the base model is extremely appealing. Value and performance is basically unmatched. The only thing close is the Civic SI and its front wheel drive only and always marked up. Don't like the 1.5 wish they would have stuck to the 2 liter in the SI
yep, that was my logic for buying my 2023 base WRX. So much more car than the Civic Si. All the things you want and nothing you don't like the adaptive driving stuff. Plus I'm hearing the VB engine is getting over 10% extra torque and power from ECU tune alone - you could see during the pull they did that the max turbo pressure was only 13psi. You can EASILY boost that to 16psi with a tune. When my warranty is done I'll be getting the tune.
@@jleano609When I had my VB I did a Perrin intake and OTS 91 tune from Felix Performance. It was supposed to be around 300whp and still very reliable. It felt comparable to the GR Circuit that I now have.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned often is Subaru will let you configure AND ORDER a car online. Huge advantage over Toyota and I almost went with a BRZ vs a GR86 because of it, but was lucky enough to have a configuration I liked come up locally for the GR.
I'm happy the 2023 didn't tank the WRX and I'm also glad Subaru is listening to it's customers. Personally, I still find it unattractive, but I'm nevertheless happy it's available. However, my experience owning one for just six months wasn't ideal due to the lack of steering feel and a light clutch, which made driving feel uninspired, more akin to a typical grocery-getter. Additionally, the plastic cladding and unappealing rear end led me to sell the car. As a longtime Subaru enthusiast, I'm hopeful that Subaru continues to refine their vehicles, and if they make the right improvements, I might consider giving them another shot.
It's tough. I've owned a 2019 series gray WRX, 2019 FK8 Type R, and now a 2023 GRC. The seating position/seats are better in Type R/WRX. The space you get in WRX/Type R area also much better. Having said that, I like the much smaller size and look of the GRC. The engine/transmission like they said is much better in the GRC - it has a soul...charisma. The GRC is a *stiff* daily driver and while the cabin is a little bare and isn't my favorite, the infotainment is significantly better, and I love that it doesn't lag like the Subaru's does. For me to consider a WRX again, they would have to put out a an STI "like" version with a bespoke 6 speed/engine that makes at least 325-350 hp that has better exterior styling, but they're done with that. It would cost too much.
In terms of tuning, the engine/transmission is better in the WRX. Tuners are having serious issues tuning the GRC with engine overheating issues. There are also, engine code issues popping up with the GRC. Tuners like Engine Logics are making the wrx a 10 second car for less than 4.5k.
The VA and VB both didn’t have the best looks. I have owned both and absolutely love the improvements they made with the VB. For sub 30k on a base model it was a great deal and still makes me smile after 20k miles.
I have an '06 WRX TR.....its got 220k miles on it and still runs great, tuned by me starting at about 6800 miles.....at 182k miles I went to 3.90FD and I lifted it 2 1/2" and put 27" AT's on it and take it off road to jobs in the oil fields in New Mexico and Texas and way out forest service roads wherever I go. Its now its getting 4.11FD and it has zero rust on it so it should last as long as I want to drive it. Oh yeah....im 62yo and I love to drive 3 pedal vehicles :)
This WRX TR is a GREAT vehicle for the money.... but just needs a few touches from the aftermarket world. I would do light weight black 19" wheels, a ground effects kit and windows tinted 20-35%. And for some better performance I would do air intake system, 100% re-circulation bypass valve, full turbo-back exhaust system with COBB pro tune. Thats all this vehicle needs!
I have the 2016 model, love it. Live on a farm, and drive it like a maniac on dirt roads. It's been airborne going 170kmh on dirt roads 9 times now. No issues...strong...just wish out of the box it was faster...I also drive only manual😊 Wish the would do a dirt road version with smaller wheels, the plastic does not look great but helps with stone chips
I haven't been a fan of Subaru for quite a very long time now. But I appreciate that they're keeping the MT and WRX alive. Like Jack, my views on opinion on the VB WRX has changed over the years as well. I wouldn't personally ever buy one, but I won't heckle anyone wanting to buy one either. The local Subaru dealers around me are not only selling these for MSRP, but a lot of them are discounted as well. A discounted VB WRX is excellent value for the money.
I’m surprised to hear that it’s been successful, even without an STI for enthusiasts. Good for the WRX, but you gotta wonder if Subaru “listened” and made the TR or if it was the plan all along. I also wonder if they will “listen” and make an STI in a couple years just to keep generating hype and sales around the car. Glad to see the WRX is still thriving.
As a proud owner of a current gen WRX (and also the previous gen) couldn’t agree more with you impressions. This car is such a rarity in terms of driver engagement at a reasonable price point in today’s market. Also had the great experience to teach both my children to drive a stick. They love it as much as I do.
I think for 42K it's in the GRC range, tough competition! The real value, like you guys said, is the base model - it's really an unbelievable value. I LOVE my 22 BRZ Limited, and it's my DD and only car but if I lived somewhere with snow I'd probably grab one!
I was in the market for a new car and as a first time manual buyer. Ideally I wanted a hatchback as the overall practicality of it makes sense to me. Additionally, I live in a region where it snows so AWD would be nice. I was looking at the GR chassis WRX/Sti years but those were so hard to find and just the money people wanted I wasn't sure I could justify it. That's before then having to worry about it blowing up due to previous owner(s) negligence. I saw a GR Corolla which didn't look bad in person. However, it just didn't hit the same for me as that old GR chassis even if its a better car overall. Then if I could find a GR Corolla at MSRP, the price was still a bit more than I wanted to spend. Had this WRX been an evolution of the previous hatchback and it came without the cladding I would've been one of the first ones in line. But I just can't get past the looks of it. Even when you paint match it, the exterior still looks off. I think Subaru missed an opportunity here especially as I keep seeing others also wishing it had been a hatchback. So, contrary to what I just stated and really wanted, I ended up getting the BRZ and I could not be happier with that decision.
The bug eye was my favorite model. I worked at a dealership in 02-03 and always loved taking them off the lot after they were delivered and taking them on a little test drive👍
Bought a 2023 WRX about 3 months ago and have fallen completely in love with it. First car I've ever owned where I can't stop driving it and will go the longest way possible to my destinations just to have more seat time. Hoping to get my hands on a TR soon mostly because I want to see if the Brembo's make a significant difference. Without question the VB is the best bang for your buck right now on the market.
I’ve been looking to replace my VA WRX with another AWD manual 4/5-door but they either don’t exist or are significantly more money. And, while I’m not saying it should necessarily be a consideration in videos like these, the aftermarket for Subaru is insane. For around $2k (tune, intake, intercooler), these are faster than its upmarket competitors.
@Almighty_cornholio Idk about this one but 6MT from old STI's was capable of surviving in 600+ WHP builds. @edit: just checked and it looks like it's "weak" 6MT which is old 5MT with added 6th gear. Yeah, it blows up at 400WHP.
@@gameboyterrorysta6307 Seems like they might of beefed. There's one of youtubers pushing well over 400 with the stock trans. I know some other people have swapped STI trans, in fact the VB actually has pre-drilled holes to mount it. Either remnants of the canceled STI, or Subaru knew people where gonna do that.
Great review! As a current 2016 WRX owner-- I think the new base model is worth the money and the TR is at a much better price than I initially heard. At 41k it seems reasonable, and I'm not the hater I once I was... but for me the lack of power just compared to modern alternatives, even if they cost more, just punches me in the gut. Hearing this is really targeted to families was eye-opening (though probably should have been obvious) and sort of signals to my childless ass that I'm probably not ever going to be in their target market again. Time to stop waiting for the next STI and time start looking for what's next.
Jack:" For a while, the WRX was the most purchased family car in the Subaru lineup, people with kids bought the WRX more than any other Subaru." Thats because old white guys and lesbians in New England bought all the other ones. :)
Bought a 23 base 6 months ago. Love it! Love it! Love it! Powerful, AWD, 6 speed manual, 27mpg, seat 4 ppl comfortably, good looking front end and tail lights, and all that for only $30k!!! The only complaint I have are the black fender cladding and the big rear black bumper. If Subaru made them body colored, they can sell a lot more. Btw, TR for $43k and those cladding, it’s a tough sell!
My GF has the 22WRX limited 6MT, I never minded the looks, but at first seemed too high tech and plasticky, but it did grow on me. Keeps the fun of my 05 Legacy GT & former 10 WRX, but has all you'd expect from a modern car. When the LGT dies, I'll probably source a 2023 WRX base without any of the eyesight stuff. Not happy that's standard now on the manuals. I find it more dangerous than helpful for me....Glad to see you guys give this a good review. The VB WRX doesn't deserve the hate and it looks better in person. It seems like an incredibly solid car all around...I would've liked to see the TR with bare bones interior and comforts and over the top performance, or a STI like Japan got, but whatever. Feel lucky any cars like this still exist.
It's funny how Subaru is proud of selling 80% sell rate of manual cars but ignore the fact they use a shitty CVT for the auto variant. If it was a real automatic or a DCT, I think the sell rate would be that high for the manual.
I absolutely love my 2022 WRX premium 6MT. My dad loved it so much he bought a 2023 limited 6MT. They are amazing cars for the money. We both live in rural area with a lot of dirt roads and snow in winter. TR looks nice for more paved road driving.
Meh. They've got enough buyers that aren't dying on the hill of "no CVT". The Subaru CVT operates just fine. We have no qualms about it in our 2023 Outback, the vehicle functions extremely well in all situations. It is surely more reliable than their previous geared automatics, too.
@@TwoDollarGararge That thinking will only work for so long. I've had four subarus. The last of which was a 14 forester with a CVT. Which I only bought because none of the dealers in my region had one with a manual. I hated driving it so much. I sold it at 25k miles. And I haven't bought a new subaru since.
I owned a VA WRX since 2014. Just bought a GR Corolla after spinning bearings TWO times. In the end I loved my WRX, but couldnt depend on it to be there when I needed it. That said, paying 40k for a WRX when you used to get sooo much more in the past (STI) feels like gaslighting. Hold Subaru to higher standards.
The TR is just too much money. It goes against what the original TR was meant to be. It should be a stripped down, very basic model that is Tuner Ready. Meaning ready to be customized by the owner. Subaru is asking STI money for a regular WRX. Swapping seats, wheels and brakes is not worth an extra $10k. As mentioned in the video the wrx IS NOT A TRACK CAR. So this is all poser junk. With the wrx the premium trim is the way to go. Everything you need, nothing you dont. Do your basic intake, exhaust and tune and it is a great car for far less money that this TR. I dont know who this car is for.
@@Washedup007 little bit simplified. It's $9k, and you get the seats (Recaros have always been very expensive), the crazy brakes, the revised suspension, the nicer wheels (19's vs base 17's) and the tires, adaptive headlights, spoiler, little stuff like heated mirrors with signals in them, power drivers seat, heated front seats, better rear seats, push button start, a Harman Kardon audio system, etc. It's not just seats and brakes between those trims.
You guys can never break up! Love to hear your commentary as you drive. Not a fan of Subaru, but appreciate their willingness to keep a manual transmission. If this were the 90s, these things would sell out in 10 minutes. Not a bad car, but certainly a very fugly one. What's appealing is that you have a manufacturer building something without overcomplicating things. Nice review.
The biggest issue with the VB (and the VA as well if we are honest) is that is is no longer a WRX. It's a Legacy GT. And at that role it is a really great car!
I have two kids I bought a 23 WRX Limited they fit fine in the rear and I have tons of trunk space for groceries or my gear or a stroller or bags of mulch. I’m 6’2” 190lbs I came from an 08 Legacy GT and I love this car. The bass heavy exhaust the smooth power delivery and I like that it’s not a common vehicle like a OB or Fozzy
My friends are big Subaru fans and I have sold them at a dealership I used to work at and I would say it’s one of the best car manufacturers out there yet I only by German and my gti manual is just as fun to drive good video 😂👍
Almost a decade ago, Subaru released next-gen renderings of it's WRX. It was Awesome. It was Lust-worthy. It also never happened. Instead, Suby defaults to the "safe", boring design we see in this video. Just like they always do.
Picking one of these up in the summer. Needed a fun/practical daily that i could still fit the wife and kiddos in while still getting through the snow in the winter.
My next car will B one of these just cuz it’s a stick which R disappearing.always liked the looks ..this car along with my Dodge Challenger nice combo.. and no kids ..!!
Bought a 2023 WRX premium for 32k over the GR Corolla which would have cost over 48k including after dealership mark up. Im enjoying the WRX and modifying it, the biggest downside of thiw car is the infotainment console. Thanks for sharing! Love the videos as always
The GR Corolla also has a trash interior and absolutely NO hatch space. I saw it at the AutoShow and couldn’t believe how shitty it was compared to the Subi.
@@ranran2218 Same question. Four doors, manual transmission, all-wheel-drive, now toss in 19 inch wheels, six piston Brembo front brakes, and Recaro front seats. $42k. The competitors?
I own a 22 vb TS in Australia. It's basically a GT. Fantastic car. As much as I push , got more to give. I got a black one to mask the plastic. It works.
The VB generation is totally underrated, especially in this environment for cars, AWD, manual transmission, 271 HP, and without crazy dealer markups, I got my 2023 premium at 3k under list. Thankful Subaru still has this.
I have a 22 premium..I beat the absolute piss out of it with no issues. The trans is clunky the suspension is stiff. Drives like a 1999 Subaru. Couldn’t be happier
This car is $42,500 plus mark up at my local dealer. I'm sorry its overpriced for what it is. Next door was a VW dealer selling a Golf R with a manual for $45k and seemed leaps and bounds like a $45k vehcile. The WRX feels like a $30K car being sold for $42k+. Pass.
TR is the same price as the GR Corolla Premium which has front and rear limited slip diffs, 300hp, better shifter feel, and a hatch, but I'd deal with a Subaru dealer over a Toyota dealer any day... Good choice to have to make!
The WRX is now all grown up. Who would have thought... A really fabulous value and a solid car. Period. What more does anyone really need? As the owner of my 219,000 mile Outback, I always pull for Subaru in the road tests. Finally here we have a test that shows the true value of Subaru. I would buy this one in a heartbeat, if I needed a new car. My Outback has been so reliable, and capable in almost any conditions, especially when plowing snow with the front bumper.
I applaud your review of this TR version WRX with an engineering emphasis-as usual you folks have done a fine analysis of the driving characteristics, particularly in reference to ride quality with the revised suspension which I have not seen mentioned elsewhere. I have enjoyed my 20 VA base purchased new and have gotten used to the cladding issues of the VB and am thinking of getting this version in the near future. I want the Recaros, Brembos, suspension and steering upgrades with the fog lights, heated wiper blades and other premium version stuff missing on mine. The reason I got a base originally is because I absolutely did not want a sunroof. I use it for commuting and a bit of sporting driving and since the car is tunable with more displacement and lower boost as stock, there is room for minor tweaking while preserving reliability. I would like it better at 38K but will see how flexible Subaru will be on price. Thanks, as always for another great review.
You guys said, the GR Corolla has the better engine. I disagree and many tuners agree with me that the engine on the wrx less problematic in terms of tuning and has a much higher ceiling. There's a whole GR community that is complaining of the overheating issues with the 1.6 toyota 3 cylinder engine from tuning. The 2.4 boxer can handle more, more reliable, and is hands down one of Subarus best engines to date. For less than 4.5k, tuners like Engine Logics, is getting the WRX to 10 seconds on the 1/4 with not much money. The interior on the wrx is much better too, plus there's more room and less plastics than the GR.

27k brand new? That's a screaming good deal. Well done man.
I actually had the most fun with the brz, but I just couldn’t make the car work with my daily life (I can only own one car because of my apartment’s parking situation.)

What's the constant timing pull, bro ?
@@cyrilmatthew2995 It's when the engine and turbo get heat-soaked and the ECU pulls ignition timing and power to protect the expensive bits.

Properly done, the EVO is 10x the car the Subaru will ever be.....sorry, but true....
I agree. I dreamed of owning either of these back in the day, but couldn't afford them a the time. Too bad neither is available anymore.
Crazy.
This is pretty much loaded top trim. It can be had for less
The WRX is not $40k, just the TR is. You can pretty much get the exact same car for $30k. Same tranny, same engine, same interior.
Noted a few discounts at my local dealer but on the lower trim level.

I wish subaru would listen to us all & bring the hatch back.
They did listen...to the buying customers. The buying customers clearly stated, through their purchasing, they aren't too interested in purchasing a hatch.
Considering just how good looking the Impreza and hatch is, it almost feels like Subaru has something against the very specific WRX demographic.
It never sold well. That’s why it’s not available.

This is the most positive I've heard Mark speak about a new car in a long time. Coming from any other journalist it would be a glowing review!

@@theodorenguyen2064 Heard the GRC has overheating diff issues
I traded my 22 WRX in on a GR Circuit Edition back in November. Got it for MSRP and from the sounds of it the crazy markups are mostly gone. My VB had an intake/Felix tune on it (~300whp) and felt comparable to how the GR feels stock. The handling and brakes are way better in the GR.
Eh not Toyota. Honda is the only one that really knows how to make shifting feel good.

Dont think, do. Ive had mine since april 2022. Zero Issues.

If the WRX TR is going for 42k then the STI would prob be 55-60k
It's a unique entry for sure. WRX is literally the only option for a lot of buyers.
yep, that was my logic for buying my 2023 base WRX.
Went from a 10thbgen SI to a 23 WRX premium. The seats and gearbox aren't quite as good, but everything else blows the civic out of the water
wait until you own one for a while.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned often is Subaru will let you configure AND ORDER a car online. Huge advantage over Toyota and I almost went with a BRZ vs a GR86 because of it, but was lucky enough to have a configuration I liked come up locally for the GR.
That is why I went BRZ, if you don't want me to be able to buy your car I'm not gonna. Toyota probably gets a cut anyway lol.
What did you replace it with?
No issues...strong...just wish out of the box it was faster...I also drive only manual😊
Wish the would do a dirt road version with smaller wheels, the plastic does not look great but helps with stone chips
An AWD sedan with a manual and this much power is a thing of beauty. This blue color is also great
I haven't been a fan of Subaru for quite a very long time now.
A brz where it snows eh? How did it perform in the snow?
I'm seriously considering one of these. Had a bugeye for a long time that I loved
The bug eye was my favorite model. I worked at a dealership in 02-03 and always loved taking them off the lot after they were delivered and taking them on a little test drive👍
Bugeyes are the BEST.
Yeah but she's rusted out. Not really safe to drive anymore
@@senseicorey9979sadly a common problem on the GD chassis, I had to let go a hawkeye wagon for the same reason
Its a great value. And you can get the mid trim limited for the best value. With the TR now theres an easy brake upgrade too
I got my VB in December of ‘22 for under $32k in the Premium trim. Absolutely love it. I have not had a love for car like this since my ‘88 LX 5.0.
Poor Mark lost the coin flip and had to get the 90s Logitech webcam for all his in car closeups. 😥
😂
Ha, the 2024 Logitech webcam! I swear they're still the same.
Underrated comment
Heck yeah I think a stock turbo can push easy 400whp but at that point the stock trans is gonna blow itself up
@Almighty_cornholio Idk about this one but 6MT from old STI's was capable of surviving in 600+ WHP builds.
Jack:" For a while, the WRX was the most purchased family car in the Subaru lineup, people with kids bought the WRX more than any other Subaru."
Thats because old white guys and lesbians in New England bought all the other ones.
Im thinking of buying a 23 base model as well. Any tips you have for negotiating?
I have an 06 wrx TR. So crazy they brought it back
My GF has the 22WRX limited 6MT, I never minded the looks, but at first seemed too high tech and plasticky, but it did grow on me.
Strange, but Engineering Explained said how superior it is to the other auto's, even their manual, but prefers the later.
I absolutely love my 2022 WRX premium 6MT. My dad loved it so much he bought a 2023 limited 6MT. They are amazing cars for the money. We both live in rural area with a lot of dirt roads and snow in winter. TR looks nice for more paved road driving.
Subaru doesn't seem to understand that people aren't against automatics, they hate CVT's.
truth. I'll take Mazda's 6spd auto over Subaru's iCVT all day, every day. Right after a (honda) manual.
Subaru has one thing that none of these companies have a very loyal dedicated buying base Subaru. People will buy a Subaru, no matter what.
@@JLJ7802 qlot of subaru people Don't really care how it drives. They just like buying them and they just continue doing so.
5:22 this slide honestly makes me proud of Subaru. good work Japan and America. thank you
This new version has grown on me. I like it. I want another one.
I got the 2024 GR Corolla Core + Performance Pack for $38.5K. The TR trim seems overpriced to me at $42K.
I would agree especially since it doesn't come with a bespoke engine like the GR. The TR seems to me to be a $38k car.
At 30k the WRX is a heavy hitter but when it starts creeping in Type R territory price wise it’s ignorable
That's exactly why I wish it had the STi's 6 speed at this price point. That would have made it justifiable.
@@Washedup007 The FA24 is still a great engine, though. Only a downpipe and dyno tune and it's at ~350WHP.
@@hhaste this is true. It would have been nice if Subaru gave the engine some kind of power bump themselves.
I love the 2015 Honda Civic rear end! Type R owner, but this generation WRX has grown on me. We're begging for the Hatch!
Yeah 10k more then a base for better seats and brakes in a mass produced car feels like a bit of price gouge to me.
I’d probably buy if they had a hatchback.
get a gla 45 and go faster with out changing gears all the time
If the were gonna go the crossover route I would have preferred they just put the VB drivetrain in the Crosstrek or Outback .
@@elnogo9196yawn
I love that the touch screen is integrated *into* the dash, not plonked into a tray on top or glued to the front of it.
Nice review fellas. TY.
My friends are big Subaru fans and
I have sold them at a dealership I used to work at and I would say it’s one of the best car manufacturers out there yet I only by German and my gti manual is just as fun to drive good video 😂👍
Jesus with that price might as well bring back the STI 😅
I leased a 23 BASE model and I love it! For the $260 a month I’m paying for it, there’s nothing that can compete
Almost a decade ago, Subaru released next-gen renderings of it's WRX. It was Awesome. It was Lust-worthy. It also never happened. Instead, Suby defaults to the "safe", boring design we see in this video. Just like they always do.
I've driven Subarus for almost 20 years now, they always find a way to disappoint.😂
RIP subaru. This video felt like a shill that I normally wouldn't associate with a SavageGeese video & I have been here 5+ years.
I traded my MY15 WRX in for a CX-9 due to kids. I miss my WRX lol. These cars tune so well and very reliable.
Picking one of these up in the summer. Needed a fun/practical daily that i could still fit the wife and kiddos in while still getting through the snow in the winter.
You won’t be disappointed. I wanted the same things and have loved my base model VB since I got in in 2022.
any fwd sedan with snow tires can do snow
Wait for the 25 redesign.
My next car will B one of these just cuz it’s a stick which R disappearing.always liked the looks ..this car along with my Dodge Challenger nice combo.. and no kids ..!!
I approve of this message. Subaru is on the rise.
As good as it may seem the the price doesn't justify buying it when you compare what the competition offers at that price point.
If you live where it snows, there's no comparison
What competition? Four-door, all-wheel-drive, manual transmission. Mid to low 30s. Who are the competitors?
@@senseicorey9979 I do. My 2019 wrx was 27k. Can't justify spending 42k for a TR that does the same thing my 2019 wrx does.
@@williamgechtman9287 I'm talking about the TR trim. You know the video title that says wrx TR.
It works.
.003% of owners Track their cars. 😂
The VB generation is totally underrated, especially in this environment for cars, AWD, manual transmission, 271 HP, and without crazy dealer markups, I got my 2023 premium at 3k under list. Thankful Subaru still has this.
It has the rating it deserves.
6k RPM redline.. Subaru has given us a diesel powerband and not strengthened the internals. Hard pass
That back bumper is just SO HIDEOUS!
