It interests me greatly that he performs the piece (the Prokoviev) here quite differently from his approach to the same piece in other videos available to us here on youtube. This allows him to the extraordinary richness of the piece itself, as well as his own virtuosity.

The piano is so bad, that, had Alexander played something more lyrical with long legato phrases , we would all have been squirming in our seats as every sustained note would have emphasised the tinny, hurdy-gurdy sound emanating from the piano. He made the very best of a bad job, though the chess-players were not the most appreciative of audiences. I think that, had he played some carefully chosen Chopin or Liszt, he would have covered all the bases and everybody might have had a smile on their faces - instead of stoney stares!!

The combination here of an out-of-tune piano and a hideous interpretation (he should keep his distance from this damned sonata - - he doesn't "get" it!) makes for an abysmal listening experience. I've performed the 1913 (original) more extensive version of this work, and believe me, his conception is so far off the mark, I'm not sure the composer would've recognized it. His mannerisms are, even this early in his career, becoming established: the arms snatching away from the keyboard; rising from the bench with arms thrust backward as the final chord is still sounding; the hunched-over posture. Viewers are going to kill me, not only for what I've just said, but I'm adding one more thing: I know this is being petty, but, I mean, how much longer do we have to expect to see him in those black shirts and black pants he's been wearing for every public appearance since he was ten?
