In all of my almost-78 years, I’ve not heard an 18 year-old play this sonata no. 23 so perfectly, beautifully and with this much passion. Mr Malofeev is an extraordinary musician and person. Thank you for this unforgettable performance. 👏🙏💐

Competition or no competition, this young performer has nothing to prove. He is way ahead of the pack in interpretation and intensity of performance. If he never wins another competition, he will be winning audiences in his ability to communicate the essence of whatever he plays.

@Stefanos Anastasiadis Horowitz wasn't the only one! Neither, Evgeny Kissin, Lang Lang, or Wuja Wang ever entered one! I predict competitions may see an end in the near future. And IMHO it's way overdue! Dare we dream that politics in the classical concert world may lose their power? Maybe then the hundreds, dare I say thousands of great talents that are never known might have a chance?

I don't think I've ever heard a better Appassionata! The use of lower and inter voices keep even the slow movement exciting and interesting (no easy feat)...not to overlook young Alex's pyrotechnics in the last movement! BRAVO! And then, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev at their very best! Now I must go listen to Tony Siqi Yun and see if I can understand how Alex didn't win 1st place! But please don't call Tony a Chinese pianist! His talent is otherworldly and he will be one of the great pianists of his generation. Having studied this Prokofiev sonata in depth, I felt he occasionally lost control of this performance; although, I would agree that that sort of repertoire favours energy more than a precise but potentially dull rendition. Overall, the full set of pieces he brought to this piano competition terrifies me - I don’t know how he prepared it all, amazing!

AM plays in a different league than TY, far above and far beyond him. AM is a bomb into cultivated nice piano playing. His Beethoven and Prokofiev are the future, out of reach for 90% of the established adult concert pianists. It is evident why TY won the competition. I will make sure not to miss a single live concert/recital of AM nearby. He re-teaches us the richdom and depth of musical sensation.

Re the Appassionata, isn’t it fantastic that we are so blessed to hear a true young music genius of the 21st Century playing the music of THE music genius of the early 19th Century if not all time. How lucky we are to hear this young man play the pianoforte with such passion. I can’t imagine what Alexander will be like when he is 35, 50 and 70 years old. He is certainly the V. Horowitz of today. If only Mr. Horowitz could hear him play the Steinway, he would be so amazed what his fellow countryman is doing at such a young age. Bravo!
As to the Pletnev Suite from the Nutcracker, I do not believe I have ever heard the ending played so delicately and perfectly as Mr. Malofeev did. It was simply breathtaking.

You just asked Him, this god in which you claim you don’t believe, to bless this incredible, gifted, young pianist-! Did you hear your words? You contradict yourself. I suggest you do some soul searching. Listen, Juan. We are born with a need to know God our Creator. HE puts that desire in each of us. BUT, it is up to us individually to FIND Him! Understand, “ the fool has said in his heart there is no God.” (Psalmist David 14:1); “Faith, (large or small) comes by hearing, and hearing by the WORD of GOD.” Romans 10:17. Without that little bit of faith, it is not only impossible for you to please our Father God, but we must believe that He IS, and that He is REWARDER of those who seek Him diligently.” Hebrews 11:6. Do this: Find a Bible, ask God to show himself to you in His Word, for He promises to show Himself to you WHEN you SEEK Him, and you SEARCH for Him with your whole heart, mind and being.” Jeremiah 29: 11-13. “For God so loved the world💕, his created beings, that He GAVE His only begotten Son, that whoever would believe in Him, (God, through His Son Jesus and His substitutionary death on the cross in our place for our sin nature), would NOT perish(in their sin nature), BUT would have ( instead!), ETERNAL life. For God didn’t send His Son into the world to condemn it, but that the world through His Son would be saved (from righteous judgment).” Wow! John 3:16-17. …Hurry, time is short; our Creator God is calling for you☝️. You’re almost there. MEET Him-in the Book of John✝️. He’s waiting🤓. Your life will never be the same❣️🥳😇🌹…Eternal life with Him is on the other side❤️. What MORE could one want😊…??

Thank you so much for that information about the Prokofiev sonatas. Actually, I was curious as to why the composer would pen such music so I researched it. Seems there was even more to the history with the murder of his friend. I won't say more, it's just so tragic. One can hardly imagine. Never would I have listened to such music until I "discovered" Malofeev on youtube. Now I'm fascinated by Prokofiev's works. Again, thanks for the extra info. Be blessed.

Nobody doubts he is a miraculous technician, and already a great musician. I just worry about his posture. He sits like an old man. Like Gieseking in his 70's. I'm afraid he's going to ruin his back. I don't want the world to be robbed of another 70 or so years of his magic.

It's a little bit scary to watch but if you pay attention you can see his posture is constantly changing and he's sitting with an almost straight back almost as much as he is hunching, as long as it's not the same position for too long I think it's not a problem. With the awareness of RSI these days you can be pretty sure that his teachers will be making sure he looks after himself physically. Still, if he practices 11 hours a day like I heard, that seems pretty demanding.

22.32 19.7 19

It is not normal for a boy Alexander's age to frequently have dark rings around his eyes.

I too have posted constructive criticism which is always deleted. I believe a reason why he did not get past the 1st round in the Tchaikovsky Competition on June 17 is related to how Horowitz used to caution his students about practicing 10-12 hrs a day "when it is time to give a concert, you will sound like you are still practicing" Also instead of so many virtuoso show pieces, how about Rachmaninoff's Liebeslied or the exquisite Etude Tableaux in D minor opus 39 #8, bringing out all the inner voicings that escape most pianists. I hope Alexander will learn since his potential is tremendous.
