There's always been a wondering about the true nature of the warframes. With Alad V and Valkyr, it all but confirmed that the frames were alive in some form at least. How can a machine be tortured to insanity?

@@kielajellopecjo2153kinda, sorta. It's a bit hazy on what the game's narrative towards cloning but it seems, for the most part, a perfectly reconstructed duplicate is the same as the original.
Despite umbra technically dying in the start of the mission, a new version with all the same memories and specifications was built.... So basically the same?
In much the same way I suppose are other Warframes. They are all duplicates of an original infested design. But, unlike umbra, they eventually had their madness settled by a tenno, and those designs were remade as passive frames for tenno use.
Though each frame certainly had their "umbra" moment I'm sure.
That being said ... I'm curious how Warframe 1999 will recontextualize things. Many thoughts Excalibur umbra was the first one, but now it seems more likely he was not. And making that dax solider into umbra was a way to basically torture him, to never give him a tenno, to live lifetimes of the same painful memory playing on loop.

@@rocovailo2862 if I’ve got my facts straight, there were two “generations” of frames during the orokin era. First(?) generation was like the frames we see in the leverian; sane and autonomous with no Tenno involved. The other was rabid and insane, and couldn’t be used until the Tenno transference process. The frames we use in the modern day are home-grown infested tissue replicas of the first and second gen warframes - no mind whatsoever.
Still unsure on how our Umbra retains his mind when we rebuild him but others like limbo don’t. Maybe it’s being stitched together by helminth versus reformed via a blueprint? Not sure on that front.

Ballas's lines has some of the best writing in the narrative quests IMO. "Even I makes mistakes like you" is one of the best double entendre's to be written in to his character. Saying on the surface level that he can make mistakes just like umbra, and hiding his line that he "makes mistakes" like umbra is such a crazy way of introducing his character as an intelligent narcissist, manipulator, antagonist, and antithesis to the tenno as a character. His design is amazing IMO because he represents man in its most depraved, desperate, and broken form hiding behind a perfect golden image of his own hubris.

The Warfames... All of them.... Ballas has done much in his time, some of it callus, much of it cruel, all of it to serve his own ends. He's resourceful, innovative, and ambitious. He hid his betrayal to his race, survived the fall of the empire, existed an age into the Tenno reawakening, and when his life finally left him at the hands of his own mockery of a Frame he created from his own vindictive sense of cruelty, his glory is stolen from him by the broken shadow of a love long dead. And now, his secrets are all laid before the Orokin's greatest failure, the Sentients. We've moved our stones. It is the Sentient's turn now, with Ballas fully in their corner. Except for this game of Komi, the outcome is the fate of the Sol system.

Congratulations, you're in the endgame of the story- it's essentially like when Witch Queen released but for Warframe. And it's free. If you care to read, I'll go on to nerdsplain some stuff about the Paracesis, Umbra as a warframe and some more lore
Notably about the Paracesis, it's a special case for leveling; every forma you apply gives it another two maximum levels, with the limit to levels, staring capacity and mastery gained being 40. It's the same thing for "nemesis" weapons, obtained from kuva liches and sisters of parvos, and necramechs.
Notably, as well, Excalibur Umbra is the closest almost anyone outside of China will get to owning Excalibur Prime. When Warframe was new, DE were in dire monetary straits and sold Excalibur, Skana and Lato prime in a special real money-only supporter package, and that hasn't been available since, like, 2014. China, though, has "Excalibur Umbra Prime", which has no distinct differences to what we have. For all intents and purposes, Umbra is just a better Excalibur. His radial blind is altered to be more effective against Sentients and when you're in operator mode, Umbra will wander and fight independently. It's actually pretty neat. He also comes with the Skiajati (even i have no idea how to pronounce it) nikana, which has a special effect that turns you invisible for a few seconds after hitting a finisher attack. Lastly, by completing The Sacrifice, you unlocked the Umbral mods. They're like Prime mods, being mods with higher capacity cost and resource requirements to upgrade, as well as having higher values- but for every mod of the Umbral set equipped, the stats increase. It includes health and armor as well as ability strength for Warframes, and for melee, you get melee damage and crit chance.
Lore wise, since you asked, Ballas is an Orokin- a human, but heavily augmented with whatever vain fashion is "in" at the time. In fact, there aren't even any aliens in Warframe. It's either humans evolved, animals mutated or things created by humans at some point. The only truly "alien" things are anything born from The Void, including the Man in the Wall ("Wally") and enemies you'll meet in the Whispers in the Walls quest. And... Sentinels i guess? The lore tab for them says something along the lines of "yeah we don't know wtf these are but we found em somewhere". So that's neat.

Ballas's kind, the Orokin, were the original masters of the Tenno. They're the bodyless slavers you heard of in The War Within. Instead of dying, they'd just use Kuva to transmit themselves into a new young slave body, breaking its mind and replacing it. That's what the grineer queen tried to do to YOU in The War Within. They were immortal, parasitic emperors.

    • @Skelethin

Orokin refers to this universes versions of humans. This is why Hunhow calls Alad V an Orokin in the Natah quest. the Orokin empire refers the higher ruling class of humans like Ballas, most distinguishable with the elongated arm and golden inlays (body modding was seen as the popular fashion trend for high class individuals.)

Orokin is used in two different ways in warframe, its simultaneously used for the word Human but is more commonly used to refer to those of high standing in the Orokin Empire. @@TabbyVeeNO Orokin is NOT used interchangeably with human but in reference solely to the Orokin social class, the elite rulers of the Orokin empire and an evolution of humanity to immortal intelligent beings.
Alas V and the grineer queens are both referred to as Orokin because their minds are and they both originated from ‘Orokin’ bodies like Ballas, living on through weaker grineer and corpus bodies through the process of continuity after their originals were destroyed.
The ONLY true Orokin we see in warframe in the flesh (original body) is Executor Ballas (also the highest ranking Orokin we currently know of), with other frequently referenced ones being Executor Tuvul, Albrecht Entrati and the glassmaker.
Humans in warframe from the common people right the way up to Orokin Archimedeans like Suda, Margulis and Yonta are NOT OROKIN, only human members of the Orokin empire. Few things
Dax are a class of soldier made to protect the Orokin. They are not allowed to raise a hand against Orokin, they're physically unable. Thus why Umbra couldn't kill Ballas alone cause he used to be a Dax and thus why Teshin couldnt hurt the Queens.
Sentients were created by the Orokin to terraform the Tau system and make it habitable for the Orokin, but the Sentients realized that the Orokin would bring ruin to the Tau system just as they had the Sol System. So the Sentients turned on them. They could manipulate machinery and electronics perfectly and nothing would prevent them from doing so, so the Orokin had to make biological weapons and machines. Things made of flesh and blood. This is why they made the Infestation, and used it to make Warframes: People turned into living weapons. But with their minds in tact they too turned against the Orokin. Thats why the Orokin needed the Tenno to control them. Eventually, the Tenno betrayed the Orokin too. The Tower in Cetus is also actually made of flesh too and the people of Cetus think it has its own consciousness as well.
Sentients adapt to damage the more you throw it at them and gain increasing resistance against it. You can use Void damage (your amp) to reset their resistance since Void is poison to them.

Congratulations on finally getting Umbra, my personal favorite Frame and who I main. His stats are above base Excalibur's, equal to that of the now long impossible to obtain Prime version. On top of that, he has a passive Sentience that lets him continue to fight too while you're in Operator mode. However, there is unfortunately a bug in the coding that DE just refuse to fix, which causes any buffs applied to him to cancel once you use Transference, which makes a lot of meta builds impossible for Umbra. Thankfully i doubt you'll be using any meta builds considering how much goes into them, so the only true downside to Umbra for you is not being that great for stealth. But if you're trying to be stealthy, you'd be better off getting a stealth Frame like Ivara anyway to use specifically for stealth missions. So realistically you get nothing but upsides here.

I hope the story isn't confusing you. Balas is an Orokin, the ruling class of the Orokin Empire, an Orokin Executor at that (Executors are among if not the highest ranking citizens of the Empire). The Orokin made the sentients to colonize the Tau system but rebelled against them instead. The sentients are formidable as they are very adaptive and can control other mechanical technologies the Orokin have (As they are almost the same technology). The Orokin then used the infested as a weapon instead which are more organic. One of those are made by Ballas, the Warframes, which are engineered infested humans (who volunteered or not).
The first warfarmes are the infested humans having their original minds but later rebelled to the Orokin as well. With that the Orokin discovered that they can use the Tenno to control the Warframes through transference (this is a secret). Balas betrayed the Orokin empire because of his resentement due to what happened to Margulis, her lover. He rebelled by telling Hunhow (leader of the sentients of that time) the secret of the Tenno.
Balas is a complicated tragic character/ villain, as he is instrumental to the downfall of the Orokin Empire, which not benevolent and are low key evil as a whole, but had very sad motivations.

And if you ever wonder why Ballas is blue, that was Orokin fashion for aristocrats and high society, most Orokin look like normal humans

    PLEASE:
Before you start the New War Quest (if you haven't done that yet):
Level up your Necramech to at LEAST level 10, to unlock all of the abilities.
The quest takes about 2-5 hours. Grab any drinks you need.
Make sure you use the bathroom first.
SLOWLY comprehend new mechanics, or else you might hit a wall.
Take in literally EVERYTHING. The maps, the funky mechanics, and any important tricks.
The Paracesis is a big, heavy sword, "designed" to ravage sentients, in case that wasn't obvious. Try to craft and use it as so. (YES, better options exist, but.... it's free and looks cool)

And you are soooo lucky to play these quests one after the other, back in the days we had to wait years in between quests. Now you just need The New War, which completes the cinematic trilogy of this arc, and then you can start the new one with The whispers in the wall (amazing stuff) that dropped last year, and this year we should get the next one. At this speed you should get on par with the story before that drops 😊

  • @Arniox
    @Arniox 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Fuck yes. Now... Now you're getting to the good part.
To explain a little bit of what you just saw:
    - orokin are the original powerful humans. They live forever by constantly moving from body to body. Orokin have blue skin and a long right arm simply to show their power. But there are also many normal, mortal humans that live in a lower cast to the orokin. The dax is just one group of militant humans that are personal soldiers for the orokin.
    - ballas became disinterested in the orokin after his original lover, Margulis, died.
    - he then fell in love again with Natah. Natah pretended to be Margulis. And she later also pretended to be the Lotus. They are all 1 in the same at this point.
    - he then betrayed the orokin during the old war and started sending those messages to Hunhow.
    - A dax soldier found out about this and tried to report it. But before he even could try, ballas caught him and infected him with the gray strain (the actual name of the infected virus). This then caused him to mutate into a "living warframe" called umbras.
    - Ballas was the original orokin who came up with the warframes to help fight in the old war against the sentients.
    - The tenno are survivors of the zariman 10 zero and gained void powers and transference because of it which you learn about more later.
    - the orokin rescued the tenno from the ship when it came back from the void, and only the children survived.
    - so ballas had crested the warframes for the tenno to use. But none of them were living. Until he created umbra, where he forced a living person, the dax to be mutated by the gray strain to become a warframe. But of course he still had memories and still hated ballas.
    - so in this quest, you helped the umbra, the person inside, overcome his guilt and pain, and kill ballas.
    - but along came Natah (who had pretended to be the lotus because she ligit did love you and did want to be a mother) and who also pretended to be margulis to trick Ballas.
    - natah then resurrected ballas, but horribly mutated and now half sentient. To ruin his "glorious orokin self". The reason his eye was glowing was because the sentients where watching. So he walks around the room slowly building a sword for you to kill the sentients with.
    And there you go

This story however add more substance to the warframes lore though because they were referred as infested puppets dangling in tenno's hands when in reality its more of a sinergy/deep undertanding between the tenno and the warrior these frames were based on, a conversation that takes place through void transference energy, that is great storytelling. this quest made me cry.. the music the story telling the build up to the moment thy tell you a warframe is not just a pice of armor.. it was a purson with a life feelings.. it loved cared for others and then.. all was taken away from them. I like to quote it as follows.. "To become a warframe is to lose one self. To only serve in name of the Orokin empire" Then thy turned on ther formar creators and where put to grave. The missing key to make it all work out for the orokin? Understanding.. humanity.. emotions. The orokin did not have or rather.. did not care for them thy see only one thing a bio weapon ment and bred for war. But at what cost.. In the end the only frame that walks around and fights by your side is Umbra why is this? Well it is simple and sad if you think about it. All frames where humans with emotions turned into a warframe all traces of human life burned away leaving a husk to control to be commanded. Umbra is still there even if it is a little. (For the sake of argument yea yea we craft frames so how would memmory be brought over from materials?) bro its warframe.. SPACENINJAS?! i dont know how.

    On the question of humans:
Ballas and the rest of the Orokin are augmented humans, they have engineered themselves to what they think of as aesthetic perfection. Gold and ivory, the colors of the divine.
These "golden" men and women are the top tier of Orokin society. Quasi immortal rulers whose tech and science are beyond mere mortals and rely on a elite force of loyal super soldiers to enforce their rule.
The Orokin purposefully keep the tech level of normal humans as low as possible, to curtail any form of uprising. Hence any functioning Orokin tech is of immense value in Warframe's current age.
The "silver" Corpus are composed of regular humans would provided a "middle management" caste of the Orokin Empire that would tend to clerical work and more intellectual duties, and were tolerated as long their internal machinations would not surpass their station.
The "bronze" Grineer were a workforce of clones, doing most jobs that require hard labour. They were breed infertile and of low intellect. The original templates are lost, so the Grineer have to rely on cloning of clones at an industrial scale, which is why all of them are afflicted degenerative gene defects.
Many humans of low-born status would also perform back-braking labour, with little to no advancement opportunities (like Parvos Granum's people before he founded the Corpus).
Gold, silver and bronze are the colors of "Plato's Republic". Needless to say, the Orokin in their moral degeneracy are a far cry from Plato's ideal of a philosopher king.

No. Not quite. All warframes are essentially lab grown infested flesh and bone hardened into armor and imbued with specific abilities meant to channel void energy. Ballas did not like that we could use the frames while they couldn't. So he went to the original orokin warriors and selected their most decorated and respected. He infected him and allowed it to twist and mold him through his will into a better version of the most feared warframe, Excalibur. Then imbued what was left of him with only the memory of killing his son with his own hands and sending him through the void to hunt and kill hunhow, margulis, and the tenno.
It really is a shame that de had not done more with the umbra platform in terms of other frames. Each of these frames could easily be a small content drop in between bigger updates adding new frames, new versions of powers, new versions of weapons, and depth and story. Doesnt have to be every frame. Rhino, frost, mag, volt, and mesa I think would be sick.

    • @monkaeyes3417
      @monkaeyes3417 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@justinreid7459 I disagree on the second paragraph. I think a lot of motivation for the Umbra frame to be Excalibur is due to most players wanting to get Excalibur Prime and being unable to. DE can't give players Excalibur Prime without breaking the contract made with players who are founder supporters. Also, just adding a new Umbra frame every now and then? is that not just the same thing as primes at that point?

    • @justinreid7459

Sure they would strength wise be strong like primes. But the bigger part would be each umbras story and history. Remember to be an umbra, it's not an inanimate thing anymore. It has a living breathing being inside of it making it unique. I believe it to be untapped story potential. And the ability to have the frame work with you on missions as the operator or voidrig, etc is such a fun game play mechanic that could be explored

Hey Kiddo, it's just getting started, but first. Congratulations on finally learning the truth of the Warframes and what they really are, former humans twisted and broken and made into unkillable, unstoppable war machines.
This game is great and the lore is incredibly well written.
Here's some more Spoiler free lore tidbits:
Ballas when first seen is 100% Orokin. Orokin are basically human minds (their consciousness) inside artificial bodies, hence the blue skin, that have a lot of the same biological functions but none of the weaknesses of being human. When Ballas is shown at the end he is now partially Sentient (biological machine).
Excalibur Umbra was a Dax, like Teshin Dax, he was a forcibly loyal soldier of the Orokin and when he found out Ballas was doing something shady he got caught and was then infected with the virus that turned him into Umbra.
When you "craft" a Warframe in the Foundry you are actually feeding the ingredients and bio data to that infested glowing red part of your ship called the Helminth and THAT is what is actually creating the Warframe, exactly like it did for the Orokin.
The Old War literally started because after the Sentients created the perfect world they had the most obvious realization ever:
"hey, didn't the humans destroy their own planet?"
    "Yea"
"So if we bring them here aren't they just gonna destroy this one too?"
"Ohhhh, you're right! DEATH TO HUMANS!"

Easily one of the best upgrade-styled quests in the game, if not the best. I still think the overall narrative could be tweaked so you get a better grasp of what's happening as you play instead of needing a 9-hour video on the game's lore but you'll get it in the end.
