    I used to do a couple of covers of Pink Floyd and they are one of my favorite bands. One "pro tip" if you want to sound like Gilmour. Listen to when he isn't playing. There are a lot of rests in his playing - he doesn't necessarily string all notes together constantly which I think is partially a blues influence. The other tip is "percussiveness". He'll rake into a bend for example. Like a couple of muted strings into a full step bend. Add that to what is in this video and you'll sound a lot like Gilmour.

    • @stevejames6860
      @stevejames6860 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I often tell my students that great guitar playing is often about what you don't play as much as what you do play and David Gilmour imo is the best at that!

    • @goldenultra
      @goldenultra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Another brick in the wall part 2 solo has the rake with bend. Hard to get that tone on my metal hsh Floyd Rose, my acoustic gets closer to that tone. Probably need another guitar leaning towards a tele, though obviously I have to hide it from the wife or I will get a different tone that I do not want to hear.

    • @goldenultra

      @@stevejames6860 I think this is true with Philosophy too obviously an aphorism is saying something, but the emptiness of meaning is balancing the meaning.
      Blues is constant playing, but it is about feeling, but I think Gilmour riffs are more like philosophical aphorisms.

    Dude, this video helped me a lot. I realized that you are not *really* talking about how to "sound like Dave Gilmour" but rather how to put a couple of boundaries together for improvisation in this style. I have only been playing for 2 months and this single video unlocked an entire new realm of understanding for me. I committed the E minor scale to memory and started messing around and got exactly the sound I am looking for. Super fun! Thanks so much!

    Dude I beg of thee, Please please please do a part 2 of these Gilmore licks! This is the tastiest shit I've found on the net yet! Holy smoke, I just cranked up the delay and it was Pink Floyd floating out of my amp . Everyone I've played it for was blown away. The backing track is awesome and long (which is good) but it don't take long to run out of Gilmore licks. I can improvise till the end and it still sounds good but, if we had a few more Gilmore licks, I think all the stars would align and we could finally achieve world peace!! All kidding aside, your a great teacher, I've subscribed and I just became a Patron! Thanks Dude, keep um coming....I think your lessons are going to take me to the promise land.

    Rewired my strat last night...strung up some Super Slinky 9's ...only had 8's, 9's, and 11's...I think the 9's were right. Combo'd with Hardwire DL-8 Delay/Looper and an Orange Crush 35RT. Amazing tone. I've been chasing that Gilmour sound all day and this lesson was just what I needed. Great video, new subscriber here. I've had guitars since I was 19, never took it seriously, just fumbled around the fret board like the guy at a party making people's ears bleed. At 46 I decided to play an hour a day and focus on certain areas and actually COMPLETE lessons. In thirty days I am amazed that I can actually play some basic leads, can use scales, my ear is improving, and I found out my pinky finger actually works!. It's all been through watching videos from people like yourself, so I have the utmost gratitude and appreciation. I'm going to look through all the different things you're offering online. Thanks, man!

    Gotta say man, i love your jam track series. Ive been playing forever, pretty technically sound, but always considered improvising my weakest area. Throwing on your jam tracks and just going apl over the neck in pentatonic, or whatever else you have listed, is like the funnest thing, brings me back to when i started, when i first realized i could play along to kirk hammett solos!

    Excellent! My biggest problem with trying to play lead is that I can't string-bend to save my life - I'm lucky if I can bend a note up a semitone. I have a Fender Telecaster so I can't blame the guitar.

    • @SignalsMusicStudio
      @SignalsMusicStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you're not playing 9 gauge strings, try switching to them and setting up your guitar with them. They're substantially easier to bend. Bends in the middle of the guitar (near the 12th fret) are easier, so try working up your strength there on the 2nd and 3rd strings. Also try using your fingers together as a block, and have them all push together as a unit to get the string to bend. It's tough stuff, no doubt, but over time it starts becoming natural.

      Also just practice it over and over. play your target note, and then bend up to it again and again. Really listen to get the right pitch rather than busting it as quick as you can. Eventually you’ll just be able to throw it on.

    Hey man, totally loving your videos! I have been following pretty much all of them. In the Maj7 arp. video you commented about that section on Under a Glass Moon from Petrucci/DT, and I would like to say that if you can do any type of breakdown/lesson/anything on some more Petrucci/DT material I would be immensely grateful! I'm sure others here would appreciate it too. I think Most Petrucci solos have something good to take for you guitar playing in general because it is very often conceived with a technical approach of hitting the right notes of the right chord in the right rhythm, if that makes sense. But anyways, thanks a bunch already!

I don't play the rock and classic rock genre as much as I used to, because I sort of switched over to more acoustic, playing stuff by Stephen Bennett, Muriel Anderson, etc..........although they are masters and I can't write nor play as good as they do, not by a longshot. They are truly gifted, but I do play some of their compositions. I still love playing classic rock on the side though.

    You hit the nail on the head by pointing out the fact that you have to play to a Link Floyd track ,,, it's the perfect setting for a guitarist to just let go and play freely !!!! TY Brother ! Great advise,,, 😁👍🎸

    When I was first learning guitar as a teenager, I learned most of these exact moves, so it was really funny hearing someone else list them all in a row like this

    Fantastic points all. DG is clearly identified as with strats, but he played many guitars on recordings. I think even comfortably numb solo is on his Les Paul

    Great video! Gilmour's guitar style is VERY distinctive. He's played on many other peoples records and its easy (and pleasing) to spot. I could listed to this all day!

    I have been listening to Pink Floyd since 1979 and seen them in 3 live concerts, if you get a chance to jam with David Gilmour I am sure you will get his approval. You have many talents, I hope you do something great with that. Very good video even for me who can't play guitar, well done.

    When I started learning guitar in about 1978, I'd already been listening to lots of Pink Floyd. So I just did what I heard on the records. It was years later that I learnt that those techniques actually had a name - it just seemed to me that that was what you did on guitar. I've still only got a vague idea about scales and what key I'm in. I just look for a note that makes you go 'wow'.

    Young man I want to thank you very much I'm probably more than twice your age been playing dozens of guitars over 40 years through Marshalls, Univox, Ampegs, Homemade Scott Stereo tube amplifier into the most powerful speaker an Electro- Voice.. My first guitar was a 1964 Fender Mustang I bought in '77, which I stupidly sold... A Cream Les Paul Custom, with black pickguard, knobs, and switch plate, which I ALSO sold, to buy a Kramer?- (circa Eddie Van Halen, '79).. We do MANY stupid things in our lives.. My First Heroes were Jimmy Page- Zeppelin, Tony Iommi- Sabbath, and Mr. Floyd himself, the Great Dave Gilmour... But ONE thing I did that was NOT stupid, was watch your video, for "5 Dave Gilmour tricks"!... I've HEARD, and Known those moves of his, Many times.. I just never put them all TOGETHER like that, I guess... Thank you, brother, and ROCK ON!... Mike

    I can't read music. I sing pretty good but not fantastic. I tried learning to play guitar but never got the "feel" of it. I love music and something led me to your channel. I have watched a few of your videos and they way you effortlessly explain what you are doing is amazing. I had no idea all of the different ways you can change the sound of a guitar. Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. Oh, and yes, I subscribed. :)

    i used to think gilmour was the greatest guitarist but someone pointed out theres people who play more complicated than david does his style is slow much easier to learn than dragonforce through the fire and flames it kinda makes sense that hes not the greatest when i think about it, i still love his sound i want to play like that. you sound very good! i can barely tell the difference.
