    00:42 - Technique
    03:59 - Sweep Exercise
    05:30 - Gm7 Arp shape
    06:50 - teh shred
    07:09 - Gm7 with Legato
    08:13 - m13
    09:28 - final thoughts
Also please forgive the weird video and green screen glitches as I continue to improve and iron out what my video setup will be. I had to record this twice and still am not happy with the final product but wanted to get a lesson up asap!

I’m not nitpicking, I just want to save frustration for later viewers. This video has helped me IMMENSELY with this technique, but I had to rewatch the videos many many times because I just wasn’t getting it. On the 3-string sweep you start with, the tabs you provide are not the same as what you’re playing, and what you’re playing is definitely way easier to do. Your tabs went “12-11-10-13-11-12” (on the respective strings, but I can’t write tabs in a comment) but in reality you played “12-11-10-13-11-10” then repeat. That 10th fret on the g string was a GAME CHANGER when I finally realized it. So much easier to play and pick up speed when you don’t have to double pick the same note.

Is this THE BEST sweep-picking-technique lesson on TH-cam/anywhere-really? - Absolutely! This dude is gifted in many ways, not just musically, one of them is his teaching ability - how he reveals the assumedly complex/impossible to be simple & approachable - and well possible with the right practice & teacher. Great stuff as always Jake!

30 years and still my Achilles' heel. I never had the patience to practice them properly. As a young player in the Bay Area in the late 80's, I was bored to death by metal/thrash bands with Skolnick clones shredding three-string arpeggios in every solo. I do wish I had spent more time on them but not that much. That's why I never got my Shred Club membership card.
Great lesson and thank you for the video. All the best from the Bay Area.

nonosh I started when I was 13, and I’m 20 now... I’m really feeling the pull of adult life telling me to put my gear in my closet and put my gear money toward a new car. It’s terrifying and sad, but it’s encouraging that it’s not forever. I mean, i still play rn, but not as much, and I know when I have a family and a career it’ll be even less and less.
What was your “hobby hiatus” like?

Hahaha dont even worry man, put thatmoney towards the things that you NEED in life!
If your homeless, starving, and barely surviving you won't need a guitar anyways!
Put thatmoney towards a car, get yourself right and in a few months you can get some gear!
You'll be good, just keep pushing, always.
I had a guitar hiatus recently for a couple years and have finally gotten sober, collected myself, and come back a better person than I've ever been.
Decided to pick the guitar up again and dude....I have come back with a vengeance!!!
I was pretty damn good before but I am surpassing limits I had previously placed on myself. Telling myself I couldn't do certain things.
Anyways, you may have more important things to do right now in the moment but be patient and when you have the money and time to come back....hit it fucking hard dude, you'll be proud of yourself.
(Remember, you don't have to stop, just stop spending all your money on new gear! Haha)

9:53 I STILL haven't heard anyone better than Gambale. If anyone thinks they have a link to someone sweeping more cleanly, more controlled and more complex lines, please... let me know. Nice lesson on learning how to sweep pick.

    Newcomer here, diggin' it!!
For those like myself that dread exercises, and for those who've JUST developed callouses...... would ya rather do some exercises or go back to blisters and pain? :)
I KNOW picking technique is my probably top priority...... this was well-presented and valuable, especially for someone who's neglected learning anything for the bad-habit-strapped right hand for decades........ I'm under the impression Eric Johnson introduced this technique (?)........ every time I hear his "Ah Via Musicom" CD I think of his video/article and the angled pick...... not yet sure I get the importance of that angle?
