    The invention of the plane was one of the great technological achievements of the 20th century. When the Wright brothers first took to the sky in 1903, they may have dreamed that they were inventing the future of travel, but they couldn’t possibly have known how popular their creation would become. Now, planes are everywhere. We mean ‘everywhere’ quite literally, because sometimes they end up in places they really shouldn’t.

    There was never an intention to restore that P-40, it was supposed to go to the RAF Museum in an (as found) condition, even giving up a Spitfire for it. A change in Egyptian leadership caused the plane to remain in Egypt, along with a horrific restoration.

It is thought that he was knocked unconscious when the plane hit the water or was trapped and drowned. His seat harness was unbuckled when he was found. Many years ago there was an English Electric Lightning sitting on waste ground adjacent to the A1 North/South road in England, over the years it got covered in graffiti and bits were taken, I thought it was an awful end for an iconic English fighter/interceptor, but most intriguing was how did it get there? If anyone knows, perhaps you would share that information with us. Thanks for a very informative video.

    • @crazybrit-nasafan

      The site was owned by a haulage firm and the owner bought the Lightning F2 and stored it there at Balderton. I had opportunity to look around the aircraft many years ago and even before the vandalism etc it was not in a good way. The wings and tail fin had been cut through to move the airframe and re-attached using steel plates and bolts. Bi-metal corrosion had set in somewhat. Some of the panels had been removed and stolen already. I last heard most of the airframe was scrapped but the cockpit section had been saved for restoration. How true that is I am not sure though.

      Most of wartime wrecks are found with no pilots body still inside as a lot of crashes were survived and pilots abandoned them, to most likely be later captured. And if the pilot or any of the crew had been killed in attacks or crashes, this was most likely to happen somewhere over enemy land, which would lead to soldiers being sent out to investigate the wreckage for survivors and removing dead crew's bodies from the aircraft.

      +rc ph That Bf-109 is a new lake recovery in Russia. I think they plan to keep that one. The Russians are doing some very good restorations now but I don't think that they have the expertise to return it to the air unless they farm some of the work out. I am thinking it will be a nice static rebuild.

    One of the p38 lightning's was under 238 feet of snow and ice...how the hell does it crash land on a smooth surface and get buried with that much ice without damge?Amazing....makes me wonder about global warming though...how could it build up that deep?

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wireless one Those P-38s and two B-17s went down in a corner of Greenland that gets about six to seven feet of snow every year, so they were buried under frozen precip. A B-17 was found first and it was smashed to bits by moving ice. The P-38 fared better and another recovery group is trying to get more of them.

    I read about the crashed P-40 when it was discovered by a survey team employed by an American. His Arab crew got to the plane before he did and they immediately started to tear it apart for souvenirs and things they could sell like its machineguns. He stopped them but they had done more damage to it in that little amount of unsupervised time than the desert had done in decades of weathering.
